Team Glazer Values Sacks: Simeon Rice Will Enter The Ring Of Honor

May 15th, 2025

Joe knew this news many months ago but didn’t get it with the ability to share, but Joe can get the word out today.

The next Buccaneers Ring of Honor member will be defensive end extraordinaire Simeon Rice, the Bucs have formally announced.

Rice is deserving. Just ask his ex-Bucs teammates and Jon Gruden. From 2001 through 2007, Rice was a terror on most days. In his first five Bucs seasons, he racked up 67 1/2 sacks in the regular season, and he was a monster in the postseason.

The Bucs defense was very special around him, but there’s no question Rice elevated those greats when he arrived as a free agent from the Cardinals.

Rice has been a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist, but it hasn’t happened often.

If he can reach finalist status, then he gets into “the room” for presentation by Ira Kaufman. Maybe Rice’s Ring of Honor induction gets him back on that path.

Rice is a character, so Joe is expecting a unique speech on induction day.

  1. BucVoyager Says:

Well deserved and he should be in the HOF. Rice was feared long before he was a Buc. Great addition to the team that won us a Super Bowl.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

    LOVE THIS!!!
In honor of this announcement, I YouTubed a career highlight video of Rice. He was a forced fumble machine! McNabb must have PTSD about that man. Rice was a terror. Still not sure why he’s not HOF.

  3. Krewe Since Birth Says:

Simeon had 122 sacks in 12 years in the league. He deserves Canton. I said what I said.

That said… Charles Hayley went to FIVE Super Bowls and 100+ sacks, and it took him years and years after his career ended to get in.

  4. WeakSecondary Says:

His sacks in the SB were timely and stopped potential game changing drives.

Changed the momentum of that game on his own.

Ring of Honor is extremely well deserved.

  5. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Cmon Irv if Freeney and Strahan are HOF’ers then Simeon is his numbers are just as good with way less games then Freeney

  6. White Tiger Says:

    Yes! “The Spaceman” EARNED IT!

Loved his nasty play on the field, he was a terror on it, he was a media darling off of it… and in the off-season he just WORKED!

Long overdue, he definitely needs to be in the HoF discussion as well!

  7. Baking with Grizz Says:

    Awesome!!!!
    He always brought the HAMMER!!!

  8. dbbuc711 Says:

Very deserving. Always was interesting. Hopefully this helps him get into the HOF. Still want to see Wilder get in to Ring of Honor.

  9. Aqualung Says:

    Farging awesome.

    Now HOF.

  10. buc4evr Says:

That’s great, too bad we don’t have a DE/OLB that has half his talent. Kind of depressing watching this defense.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

To enhance his chances, Simeon needs to circulate on the pregame shows. He was always entertaining, and some of those shows are so dry, he could easily show up 4 or 5 times on each and maybe might even get a job offer.

Sim, you go to self-promote, Brother!!!

  12. Durango 95 Says:

    FANTASTIC!

Great news, well deserved. Not only a great player but he is the walking definition of one cool cat. 🙂

Clear memories of reading Joel Buchsbaum’s draft guide and his profile as Rice was entering the league. Thinking Bucs need to draft this guy. Didn’t quite happen that way. But all’s well that ends well. Rock on.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    Cool.

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Outstanding and about time!
    Congratulations 97.

  15. Durango 95 Says:

Need to get James Wilder in the ROH, too. Can’t figure out why that has happened already. Maybe his play in the memory of Bucs fans has faded? I don’t know. Seems so odd to me.

  16. Richard Dickson Says:

Arguably the MVP of that Super Bowl.

And yes, get Wilder in already.

  17. Chris Dowdy Says:

Have they announced the date for his induction yet?

  18. Steven007 Says:

Was that the team hotel before a home game? We used to do that to watch the players arrive. Sapp arrived and literally ran through the doors to the front desk to avoid fans. Rice was gregarious. Dancing and mingling a bit. Gruden also came to our our couch and chatted with us for a bit. Even keyshawn who was on his phone threw us a peace sign. Good times.

  19. Steven007 Says:

    * was at the team hotel before a game…

  20. SB~LV Says:

    JAMES freak’n WILDER !!!!!!!

  21. DungyDance Says:

Love the pic – a legit sack of Favre. Take that, Strahan.

  22. Lokog Says:

    I miss that defense

  23. Pickgrin Says:

    Jason Taylor – 199 games started – 536 solo tackles (2.69 per game) –
    139.5 sacks (.701 sacks per game) – 6 seasons with 10+ sacks

    Simeon Rice – 161 Games started – 403 solo tackles (2.503 per game) –
    122 sacks (.757 sacks per game) – 8 seasons with 10+ sacks

Taylor was a FIRST BALLOT HOFer….

Rice can’t even get into the room to be considered for HOF….

Something is very wrong with this picture!

  24. Cobraboy Says:

No Rice in 2002, no SB. He was the terror that drove excellence on that D.

  25. Bucsfan Says:

Congrats Simeon as you certainly deserve it.

  26. Cobraboy Says:

Rice’s spacey personality rubbed the sports writers the wrong way.

HOF is political as much as it is about production.

I loved the genius weirdness of Simeon Rice…

And I also agree with SB_LV: James Wilder, please. The thing is, he was not around for the Glazers, so there isn’t the same intensity over him.

  27. D-Rome Says:

Congrats to him! He’s a borderline HoFer, but this is a wonderful honor for him.

  28. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Justice

  29. Mveal2006 Says:

    Overdue. Way overdue

  30. SenileSenior Says:

Rice was either a cool cat or a space cadet depending on your perspective. I favor the former. And yes, some self advocacy is probably in order for him to get in the official hall of fame discussion.
