Team Glazer Rants On “Overdue” Hall Of Fame Call For Simeon Rice

May 19th, 2025

Buccaneers co-owner Bryan Glazer came out throwing darts today in the direction of Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors at the news conference announcing Simeon Rice as the 2025 inductee into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.

Young fans, no, Simeon Rice is not a Thai food entree at a swanky south Tampa bistro, he was a ferocious pass rusher who played for the Bucs from the 2001 through 2006. He was cut at the start of training camp in 2007 after not recovering well from a shoulder injury.

Rice cranked out 67 1/2 sacks in his first five Bucs seasons. Enough said right there, but Rice also notched 7 postseason sacks for the Bucs in 5 games. Stud!

Glazer seemed irked that Rice has never progressed to the finalist stage of the Hall of Fame selection process. If the voters get you there, then you get presented to all panelists by a human (in Rice’s case, the pitch would come from Ira Kaufman) for a vote. Rice has never gotten past the semifinalist stage in his many years of eligibility.

“Notably, he’s the only retired player with 100 sacks over eight consecutive seasons who doesn’t own a gold jacket,” Glazer said. “It’s time to rectify that oversight.”

Glazer shared other statistical nuggets that put a Hall of Fame-caliber spotlight on Rice. And Rice himself was on WDAE radio today noting how he is one of only three players to average more than 10 sacks a season for his entire career. Rice played 12 years and amassed 122 regular-season sacks.

Compare his numbers to Freeney and Strahan just as good in less games

  2. Sapp 2 Fundamentally Sound Says:

3rd & long was like clockwork with Rice rushing through the left tackle.
Everyone knew what was coming and they still couldn’t stop it. Simeon Rice was so much fun to watch. I miss those days.
YES YES YES He deserves to be in the HOF!

  3. Tony Says:

Tryon will be in the Bucs ring of honor later on in the future, too!😃

  4. BA's Red Pen Says:

He should have been the Super Bowl MVP, if he had that on his resume he might already be in.

  5. Cobraboy Says:

    10 sacks a season for a career?

    Wow.

    Them’s some serious production numbers.

He made guys look like they were blocking him on roller skates…

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Every team has their guy that should be in the HOF.

  8. KABucs Says:

… and it wasn’t just the sacks, this guy was king of the strip sack fumble. He was long and fast and I don’t know how many times he batted the ball out of a QB’s hand right when the arm was cocked back ready to throw. Definitely double digits. That was his signature move and he recovered many of those fumbles himself.
Joe or DR… look that stat up please! LOL

Plus, the guy had personality. Picture a really big Tez Johnson.
Dude was an animal. He’d train in the offseason running up sand dunes. And he would be able to do that at almost full speed.

  9. TheBigSombreo Says:

    Yes!

Simeon Rice was a beast and completely underrated.

Wothout him… shall we say no 2002 Super Bowl?

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Rice is borderline for the HOF, which is why I think he got stuck in the process where he is. It’s close, very close, but ultimately I don’t think he’s going to get past the stage where he’s been at previously. With that said, he was the definition of an elite pass rusher, and was better against the run than people think. That 2002 Bucs defense is literally the best passing defense in the history of the NFL, and it’s not even particularly close – and you can easily make the case that the 02 Bucs are better than the 85 Bears. Also the stupid overhyped 00 Ravens, who puffed up their stats vs an expansion team and terrible offenses, is not in the conversation.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Jimmie Giles for tbe hof Says:

Warrick Dunn literally had more yards from scrimmage than Jerome Bettis – is 24th in rushing all time, and 20th in yards from scrimmage all time, and he’s a maybe to get into the Ring of Honor? Are you joking? He is literally at the top of the should be in the HOF discussion for former Bucs players – I’d put him ahead of even Rice.

Alstott was on a HOF path until Gruden ruined his chances since he’d rather see Michael Pittman run into the back of his offensive lineman on every play.

If Hardy had been able to stick around through the 2002 season, he’d be in, but just got to the Bucs a bit too late in his career. But there is no single player more responsible for the turn around of the Bucs than Nickerson – and he should have been a 1st ball Ring of Honor member, even ahead of the teams HOFers because of his role of being THE guy that turned things around, and I honestly don’t think a single member of those teams would disagree with that.

  12. ballwasher61 Says:

Rod I agree about Hardy, I couldn’t believe when he signed with us and instantly the defense got really nasty, his attitude was the spark of things to come and he should be in the ROH at LEAST and a shame he’s not there yet.
Some of Chris Berman’s best recaps of the day were of Alstott bouncing off people into the end zone or just flat bulldozing them, then Dunn running around making people miss, whoop, whoop, whoop, LOL, WD40 was great.

  13. Eric Says:

It’s a joke until he gets in. I don’t care if you like him or not!

  14. David Kilmer Says:

If you put on the tape there are times both regular season and post that Simeon simply took over the game!!!. Sure he had Sapp, Brooks and a great defense, non the less he at times took over the game!!!, plain and simple?. I remember saying at the time when the games were on and I am saying it now. When 1 player can totally take over a game at any point on many occasions, that is HOF, the HOF material. The Hall needs to make him a finalist and let Ira make the case!

  15. unbelievable Says:

He is one of only three players to average more than 10 sacks a season for his entire career

I mean… that kind of says it all right there, doesn’t it?

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Jimmie Giles for tbe hof Says: “Gerald Mccoy- still early”.

Nice list dude but Gerald McCoy will NEVER be in the HOF.

    I hope you were joking!

  17. Fred Says:

I sat through 26-0. I should be in the HOF too.

  18. KABucs Says:

Just watched the video of Simeon Rice at the podium talking about his induction into the Ring of Honor… he had to stop for a minute due to getting emotional… being in tears.
Love that guy! Glad he’s finally in.

  19. Simeon4HOF Says:

    The King of the strip-sack

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

Agreed on Hardy. Floyd Peters gets overlooked for his contribution too..

  21. Jayson Lite Says:

    Joe,

This is exactly why we love your way with words…… Tom McEwen-esque but with some added Big Guava sophistication.

“Young fans, no, Simeon Rice is not a Thai food entree at a swanky south Tampa bistro,”

  22. Cobraboy Says:

Hardy Nickerson changed the attitude of the defense…

  23. KABucs Says:

    Total tackles: 483
    Sacks: 122.0
    Forced fumbles: 28
    Fumble recoveries: 8
    Passes defended: 43
    Interceptions: 5

Those are some gaudy numbers for an edge rusher in 12 years
