Remember And Honor Memorial Day

May 26th, 2025

Joe has never been comfortable with the greeting, “Happy Memorial Day.”

It’s not meant to be a happy day.

Joe adores summer. Women wear less and the cold beer tastes colder. Most important, the weather is nice and warm. It’s all good.

It also helps that the summer is traditionally bookmarked by three-day weekends, with America’s birthday right smack dab in the middle.

If you are like Joe, at some point today you will grill raw meat and crack open several beers. If you are fortunate, then you are watching glorious bikinis from a boat in the Gulf or at the beach. If so, saluto!

But please take a moment to remember the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice to allow us to guzzle beer, ingest mass quantities of meat and throw (digital) rocks at each other when discussing our beloved Bucs. A U.S. flag, small or large, on your property or apartment deck is a great touch, too.

Remember that heroes didn’t come home.

Yes, our day at the beach is brought to you by those who hit the beach and never left it, whether it was at Normandy, Iwo Jima, Anzio or so many, many more.

Remember they were black and white and man and women. They were homosexual and bisexual and they were strong and weak. They were us and we’re all one. In memory of the best of us may we all be together. For this day. We owe them that. We do. Thanks Joe and Happy Memorial Day.

Yeah, saying “Happy Memorial Day” is weird. I don’t mind if someone says it but I’ll say meaningful or respectful instead of happy. As fifth generation military I don’t think people need to be in mourning but I do wish people thought of how our freedom comes at a cost and spare at least a thought or a few moments of the fallen as they plan their day. Whether that’s at the movies, at a party, having a beer, enjoying a bbq or sale. Enjoy the day but at least respect the fallen for a moment or have a meaningful day. Just me and my family’s view on this day. Thanks Joes for putting a post on your great page about this day. I appreciate it as a vet and a Bucs fan.

I wish the USA required all to have some kind of service to the nation. We would be a much better country than we are now if they did. Let us not forget those who paid the ultimate price for our Flag.

  16. CocoaBchBuc Says:

Spot on Joe. Thank you for reminding everyone why we have this Holiday.

  17. D-Rok Says:

As a vet, THANK YOU for this article, Joe! I fly my flag year-round, and its presence takes on a deeper meaning this day.

Amen to the Heroes who died defending our freedoms and liberties we enjoy in this great country.

A perfectly said, Joes. Thank you.

I am named after my dad’s brother, who was a B-17 bomber pilot who flew missions over Germany in WW2. He was shot down and killed on his 45th and last mission, but not before he made sure his crew bailed out safely. A real hero.

    Dang.

Those guys went through mental hell. Not sure if you’ve even seen a B-17 up close but those things were just a tube of sheet metal. Not sure it would stop a .22 shot from a rifle. Any decent-sized caliber, no way. A brick of cheese might have put up a better shield.

When Joe saw a B-17 in a museum and got to touch it, couldn’t believe guys few something like that in combat. Still can’t. Just cannot imagine what those guys went through dozens of times. Makes our “problems” look like friggin’ jokes.

(Not sure you guys remember Mark Cook who used to cover the Bucs? His uncle was shot and killed in Germany two days before the surrender. Two friggin’ lousy days.)

  20. White Tiger Says:

Amen to these words Joe. This is a somber day of remembrance, my Dad was a US Marine and taught me what today is. We are to remember the heroism of our fallen heroes. They have the last, full, measure. God bless their families, and my family thanks them for their service and the lives they laid down for their countrymen.

  21. GoneGator Says:

Thank you to all that served. 🙏🏼 🇺🇸

  22. Joe Says:

Thanks for the kind words guys.

  23. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yup, I can’t even imagine the mindset of people who have the guts to serve in our military. They are the true American Heroes! It is a very somber day and should be treated as such. People that say “Happy Memorial Day,” have clearly forgotten what this day is about.

  24. Half_Sac Says:

I wonder how long until our government tries to take away this holiday because we have too many days off

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

    God Bless our Vets.
Thank you for making this the land of the Free
