News, Notes & Nuggets From Tuesday (OTA) Practice

May 27th, 2025

It’s a hot one at One Buc Palace for opening day of “OTA” practice. Still no pads or hitting, but players can line up for gentle 11-on-11 work.

*Todd Bowles barking signals to his defense in defense-only work. Bowles sounds like a professional quarterback.. The HC does a nice fake handoff.

*Smooth punt catching collectively from various receivers and returner hopefuls during drills. While that’s happening, Bucky Irving and Sterling Shepherd play catch.

*Not a lot of balls, if any, on the ground during drill time of practice.

*No Haason Reddick, Vita Vea, Lavonte David, Tristan Wirfs, Mike Evans or Chris Godwin.

*A handoff kicks off 11-on-11 session of practice. Again, no pads.

*Jamel Dean is out there with the first team. Dean successful in coverage — incomplete — on Jalen McMillan for the first throw of day.

*Bucky Irving runs off left tackle. Of course, it was smooth sailing. No real blocking allowed.

*Mayfield to McMillan complete left for 15 yards.

*Handoff right, Rachaad White from Kyle Trask.

*Trask to Rakim Jarrett deep down seam. Lays out for catch and then pops off the turf fast to make a move.

*Camp meat QB Connor Bazelak with a sharp sideline completion to Tez Johnson. No, Bazelak is not a threat to make the roster.

*Weird seeing

*7-on-7 arrives*

*Mayfield incomplete.

*Rachaad White in right flat complete.

*Interception! SirVocea Dennis picks Mayfield on a short pass. It appeared Emeka Egbuka was the target. Mayfield hung his head a bit after the pass and didn’t bark at a receiver.

*It’s a QB keeper for Kyle Trask.

*Rookie cornerback Roman Parodie out of Ohio State sprints off field and frantically tries to enter One Buc Palace. Seems like an Imodium A-D commercial. Parodie sprints out of building 5 minutes later.

*Dean with a pass breakup on left sideline. He gets some love from Antoine Winfield, Jr.

*Mayfield complete over middle to Egbuka, 10 yards. LB Nick Jackson claps his hands in frustration after tight coverage.

*11-on-11 returns with a laser complete to McMillan in tight double coverage. Dean was among them. McMillan would have taken a hit in a real game.

*Egubuka!! Strong sideline catch on 20 yard throw to left side from Mayfield. Very Godwin-like moment. Dean in coverage. Egbuka skies for the stud catch.

*Trask with a checkdown to Sean Tucker.

*Nice grab by Tez Johnson in third-team work.

*Mayfield returns with a short completion to Otton on right side.

*Mayfield incomplete (Joe’s got an obstructed view. Looks like the target was WR Kameron Johnson and Dean broke it up. Can’t be certain.

*Payne Durham with a catch on the left sideline after Mayfield rockets one in his gut after a long scramble.

*Sweet breakup by Zyon McCollum on a breakup over middle on a throw by Trask. Speed was evident.

*Defense is all fired up by what would have been a sack by Chris Braswell with a couple of plays remaining in practice.

    Thanks for this!

  2. Baker Bowl Says:

Any insight on Nash Hutmacher? Curious to see how his camp process is going

  3. Pewter Pirate Says:

Thanks for the insights Joe. With the slow off season, this is something to hang on to.
There is no slow offseason. Joe and most fans can talk Bucs all year long with ease and fluency, whether that be online, at a barbecue or at a bar. That’s what Joe does here. –Joe

  4. SlyPirate Says:

Sounds like Trask is playing way better than Mayfield. This is the year!

  5. Aqualung Says:

Nice update. Glad for no injuries.

  6. First Last Says:

Man, Trask is about to throw 50 tuddies this year…. Jk jk where is rod munch when you need him? Hopefully we see some throws to Tez with the first team. Kameron Johnson dropped the one pass last year that wouldve cemented him and I think the snaps are wasted this yesr

  7. StickinUp4Centers Says:

SVD is not going to let Parrish break his team record for INTs in underwear football.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Defense is all fired up by what would have been a sack by Chris Braswell with a couple of plays remaining in practice.’

Nice way to end the notes Joe. Convinced that Chris Braswell is in for a significantly better year.

BTW, did you happen to notice anything about the size of last year’s rookies? Kinda wondering if the coaching staff had any of them beef up in the off-season.

  9. Lt. Dan Says:

Haha – Imodium A-D. Only dudes of a certain age know what Imodium A-D is.

Love these snippets from practice Joe’s. Well done!

  10. heyjude Says:

Thank you so much for the detailed info! Buka and others are sounding really dynamic. Trask with surprises too. It is extremely hot and they are out there getting it done.

  11. BigBoiBuc Says:

Thanks for the report Joe(s). Is it Sept 7th yet???!!!

  12. Tenn Says:

Glad Parodie avoided a Code Brown incident. That would’ve been difficult to overcome.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Thanks Joe, great recap as always.

Glad to hear Dennis is out there playing, meaning he must be fully healthy. He’s going to be a huge part of this defense, if he can stay healthy.

  14. BucU Says:

“”Glad to hear Dennis is out there playing, meaning he must be fully healthy. He’s going to be a huge part of this defense, if he can stay healthy.””

Very important piece this season. We got killed in the middle of the field constantly after he went down. Need him ON the field to disrupt that.
Same thing with AW3. Imperative that he gets back to 2023 form if they want to make a legitimate run for a SB.

  15. GoneGator Says:

Thanks for the notes Joe 👍🏼

  16. JimBobBuc Says:

    Thanks Joe!

Are AW3 and Bryce Hall on the field?
Anthony Walker starting at ILB beside SVD?

    Michael Pratt playing or hurt?

  17. capnhowdy Says:

    @Joe
Correction; there used to be a slow off season until Joebucs came on the scene. Thanks for all you guys do!!

  18. SB~LV Says:

Finally an article without Watson being mentioned

  19. Fred McNeil Says:

Thanks for the notes Joe. I guess Paradise wanted to try on his pewter pants early.

  20. ballwasher61 Says:

Nash Hutmacher, SMH, LOL. German for “pudding in the middle”

  21. LANshark Says:

@Joe – Roman Parodie is from OHIO UNIVERSITY, NOT Ohio State.

    Just FYI

  22. garro Says:

You are the Man! Great stuff as usual Joe!

    Go Bucs!

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Thanks, Joes!
