Emeka Egbuka Showing In Underwear Football He Can Play All Receiver Positions

May 25th, 2025
Fun chess piece.

Emeka Egbuka

One reason the Bucs thought so highly of Emeka Egbuka is the front office believed he was versatile enough to be plugged into any receiver position and perform at a high level.

Bucs passing game coordinator Kefense Hynson believes Egbuka has shown that in his one month in a Tampa Bay uniform, albeit in underwear football practice.

“He already has,” Hynson said last week when asked if he thought Egbuka could demonstrate he’s a flexible receiver.

“He’s got position flexibility. I think people say ‘receivers,’ but there’s really three, really four spots — potentially five [positions] — to know how many [positions] you play with.

“[Egbuka has] got the mental capacity to learn all three, and not just learn it, but actually be good at it, which I think is the thing that people forget about the most.”

Hynson noted that there is a difference between knowing how to play and playing well. He believes a lot of players can learn, but good luck when getting on the field. Egbuka handles both.

“You know, I could learn how to box, but I probably wouldn’t be very good at it,” Hynson said. “So [Egbuka] can excel at all those [receiver] positions. He gives you flexibility.”

And that, Hynson added, is where the fun begins.

Offensive coaches could craft all sorts of passing plays and with Egbuka’s flexibility, defenses really couldn’t guess what he might do.

“Which means he’s an awesome chess piece, because you can put him on the field with other core skill guys, and now you can build a system,” Hynson said. With Egbuka, “you really get everything you want, because you got all those pieces [in one player].

“So, as a coach, putting together a system I think it’s really a fun challenge to figure out how you can manipulate … and put your best people on the field, relative to what you’re trying to do.”

If new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard really is as sharp as people say, this offense could become even more fun to watch.

It’s sort of giving Joe the vibe of the 2020-2021 Bucs offenses. That would be fantastic.

Well, being that Grizzard is a rookie at this there’s going to be a learning curve and mistakes. Hopefully he’s a quick learner and we’ll eventually see when he gets over that rookie wall and quickly gets this offense humming like Coen did.

  2. View from 132 Says:

Nice to hear but honestly, no pads and no hitting, can’t anyone play all three positions? Bucky Irving could be out there running a route tree… so what?

There’s no reason mayfield can’t be MVP this season

As long he’s not Kenny Bell II

I’m supposed to be the positive pollyanna here but I can see reasons.

#1 of course is INJURY. Baker plays blls to the wall and is fearless, ergo he frequently places his body in harms way.

#2 Injury. If Wirfs and another OL go down, if Bucky or RW both go down…
IF CG doesn’t recover and ME’s hammies act up.

And reason #3 it’s the freaking NFL. There are OTHER very talented QB’s on good teams that could beat him out even if Baker has a great season and the Bucs win the South again.

But I certainly wouldn’t be shocked if he does win it…just lots of variables including LUCK involved.

  6. Allen Lofton Says:

If the Bucs win the Super Bowl this season. It will be interesting if Baker and others win awards. At some point the Bucs will finally get recognition from writers and fans.

  7. HC Grover Says:

Good pick our top guys are just getting old like us all!

  8. Obvious Says:

Injuries go for Mahomes, Allen, and everyone else.

The roster is loaded for him to do even better than he did last year.

Of course he might not. But everything is set up for him to be able to go off for 50 plus TDs.

  9. KABucs Says:

I think due to the media’s Buc/Baker bias (there are 2 or 3 writers/analysts out there that are Bucs protagonists), we’d have to go deep into the play offs (ie. NFC championship) and Baker would need to have Peyton Manning 50 TD type numbers to win MVP. No other QBs like Allen, Burrow or Jackson can have similar numbers even if slightly lesser.
There are/were QBs with lesser stats than Baker that got more PB votes and are ranked as better QBs in those dumb QB ranking articles.

For me, I’ll take the guy that is universally loved by his players, blocks for Bucky way down field and stiff arms Bosa to get the pass off any day!

Grizz isn’t exactly a rookie playcaller 100%… He was responsible for 3rd downs last year and we were the best in the league.

There is a little bit of carry over from that 3rd-down experience…

  11. Aqualung Says:

    Love that draft pick. Genius.

  12. Aqualung Says:

People forget that the Bucs were good at running the ball in 20/21. They just chose not to run more, but the OL with Marpet and Jensen anchoring the middle was stout- and Lombardi Lenny and RoJo were an excellent one-two punch.

    LFG!

Man in past I would get soo hyped for the season with all the talk of offseason changes and players brought in and players getting developed going into another year just to be let down. Now I’m talking bout the lost decade obviously it hasn’t bin that way for 5 years now. Just a little PTSD but man with all the new toys I’m really looking forward to this season. LETS GOOOOOO

  15. Permanently Moderated Says:

Now, if we could only get the ‘20-21 vibe from the defense.

  16. heyjude Says:

Looking forward in seeing Buka play! Great pick.

  17. ballwasher61 Says:

Eric: 100% on Grizz not being a rookie play caller AND he will have others handling some aspects of the offensive play calling as Coen did last year.

EE did what coach said for 3 years at OSU, I believe this years O, barring injuries, will be fantastic. Also think the D bounces back to a solid top 10 D, maybe top 5 and lead the league in turnover margin.

  18. toopanca Says:

Egbuka is the Bucs #1 draft pick, so I hope that he is the offensive rookie of the year on a Bucs team with three WRs with 1,000+ receiving yards each and three RBs with 1,000 yards from scrimmage each.

While making fishes from wishes, I hope that the rest of the Bucs defense is so good that teams have to attack the ILB position where they run into Lavonte David having a career year with 150 tackles, 6 interceptions, 6 sacks and 6 forced fumbles.

Don’t wake me up until Monday morning. Uh, I’m retired – don’t wake me up Monday morning!

13-4! I remember my first beer.
