Deion Sanders Welcome But Not Expected At Bucs Practice

May 10th, 2025

A Tampa Bay Buccaneers photo of Shilo Sanders.

So at Day 1 of Bucs rookie minicamp yesterday, one big-name rookie quietly went about his day and seemingly passed on having a news conference despite many media in attendance hoping he would talk.

Joe’s referring to safety Shilo Sanders out of the University of Colorado.

Sanders, 25, played six years of college ball at three schools, and got extraordinary exposure as the son of Deion Sanders and popular guy on social media and YouTube. The Bucs signed him as an undrafted free agent.

Many expected Shilo Sanders to be an attention-seeking presence among the rookies. Heck, the young man made a well-edited YouTube video of his relocation to Tampa. But his only noise yesterday came on the field. And Joe noted how professional Sanders approached his work. Well done.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht was not bracing for a common Sanders circus, so he told The JP Peterson Show.

“We’re not expecting Deion. Deion’s got his own thing going on,” Licht said. “You know, maybe at some point he’ll come and see his son at practice like any father would want to do. I have my own sons out here. No, [Shilo is] gonna be just like anybody else and he’s battling to make the team and there’s no guarantees.”

Joe expects Sanders to make it past this weekend’s hurdle and stick with the team at least through spring practices that wrap up in June.

And Joe also hopes Deion Sanders shows up for a practice (minus his camera crew) and gets all the Bucs cornerbacks together to short chat about the intense competition that is forthcoming.

    Please STAY AWAY!
The chemistry in the building is perfect!

  2. BigBoiBuc Says:

And the circus starts. Bring in the clowns.

  3. Greg Says:

Hardly. He’s an UDFA. One hint of a headache not warranted by talent and he is on the next bus out of town.

  4. Allen Lofton Says:

Dion Sanders entire life has been about Showmanship. Todd Bowles needs to show leadership and keep training camp exactly that, training camp with no side shows.

  5. David Says:

Yes, Deion has been about showmanship, but he has always been an extremely hard worker and one of the greatest cornerbacks in history. If he showed up without the circus for one day, it would be great. I would definitely give him 20 minutes with the DB room. You don’t think the DB’s would love that and motivate from that?

  6. Scott Says:

The I’ve got no problem with the Sanders family. Shilo has some good competition at safety though.

  7. Ancient Says:

David…is absolutely right. Short memories out here on just how good of a cornerback Deion was and a hard worker. If he wanted to step out here and support his son, and make a thing of it, and step into the DB room to speak to those young men (and our subpar to date) defensive staff and indoctrinate everyone in there on his career and best lessons… they’d be lucky to have him and listen carefully.

  8. View from 132 Says:

28 should be a retired number for the Bucs to honor how many runs up the middle Warrick Dunn had to endure in offensives that lacked creativity.

Please no more Dion sightings I am way beyond tired of Daddy Dion!
Have been for about twenty years…

    Go Bucs!

  10. Chip offllll the bucs Says:

I wish Shilo the very best, like ny other player. If he proves worthy I’ll welcome his signing, as for Dion, he’s one of the greatest. But that was then and this is now. LFG BUCS!!!

  11. Todd Says:

Deion is in the Top 5 best athletes in the last 100 years.

  12. MadMax Says:

Just do your best Shilo and the process happens…..stand out, you’re in….and Dad knows to just back off a bit and stay backed off….he’s not the one putting a helmet on now, and yes we all know he has experience…just give your son some room and let him do him, its that simple. And if it works, awesome! If it doesnt, thats fine too.

Im pulling for him….we desperately need safety help.

  13. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Neon Deion is no dope. I do NOT expect a flying circus if he does come to Tampa. If I signed a UDFA who has a father that was one of the best DBs in history I would not mind at all if he looked in to see how his son is doing and check out the Bucs in the process. But, that’s it.

  14. Coconut Doughnut Says:

I’m rooting for Shilo, he seems like a good young man and he is very likable, that being said ball out young man!

    Neon Deion is no dope.

    Mmmmm, that’s debatable.

  17. Todd Says:

I believe your moniker is spot on.

  18. Scubog Says:

I suspect Deion may have been a bit taken back when his # 1 son, Shedeur wasn’t drafted in the top 5, but instead the 5th round. Perhaps in part because of the anticipated sideshow. Shilo now has a chance to make his own way without his father, and even his brother, stealing the show. Who knows, maybe Shilo will have the better NFL career. I remember once a reporter asked Walter Payton’s brother (can’t remember his name) what it was like to be the brother of a super star. To which the brother (still can’t remember his name) replied, “I don’t know, maybe you should ask Walter.”

  19. Diesel Says:

Y’all don’t have to like the man but y’all need to chill with this slander of Prime. His whole career he’s been nothing but exceptionally professional on the field and gracious off of it. He’ll respect the process, and the organization will give him whatever access they feel comfortable with. Remember he’s a father first, and he’s here to check in on his son if and when he shows up. Shilo’s here to earn a spot. If him doing so makes our 53 or PS better, we should all be for it. If not, then so be it. But let’s keep our feelings on football. Leave all that other nonsense elsewhere

  20. Navfree17 Says:

Hell ya Diesel! Plus, the BUCS need exposure. Just like when TB12 was here. It’s the main reason LVD is not an automatic lock into the HOF. At the end of the day it’s a business.

    Slander? That’s funny.

Also, who continues to call themselves “Prime” after their playing career? Duuush nozzles.

Did you see the shots from the inside of Shedeur’s draft room? All the dollar signs on the wall, etc… families that do that, there’s no slander. The criticism writes itself.

    Yeah, not that kind.,

Just like when TB12 was here.

    Yeah, not that kind either.

    Celebrity athletes. Pass 🤮

  23. Aqualung Says:

What would really be great is if Deion paid a visit to One Buc and had a long, private chat with the head coach about his defensive coordinator’s horrid pass defense schemes and how to fix them.

  24. Larrd Says:

Deion is probably a pretty inspiring figure to most nfl players. He’d be great on a visit.

  25. infomeplease Says:

I wish the kid the best. If he makes the team it’s because he worked hard and showed more potential than the next man.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

Good call Shilo – keep your head down and your profile low while you work to earn a place on this team. Respect will only be earned on the field in this league – so no need to talk until such time as there are obvious positive results on the field to talk about…..

  27. GoneGator Says:

If Dion wants to visit his boys practice then by all means let him…. Tampa is Todd’s house, I think Dion knows the drill and will behave.

We DON’T need Dion trying to coach anybody, or advise anyone about anything. That would be Stoopid.

As far as Shilo is concerned… Does anyone really think he’s a lesser talent than the guys listed below?
Jordan Whitehead, Mike Edwards, Kaevon Merriweather, Tavierre Thomas, Ryan Neal, Marcus Banks, Rashad Wisdom.

Ty Lord for stopping me from taking off on that filfthy ign%rant r@cist mf in the comments
