Bucs Leading The League In Offense? Devin Culp Doesn’t See Why Not.

April 22nd, 2025

Tight end Devin Culp.

Last year as a rookie, Bucs seventh-round pick tight end Devin Culp was mostly a healthy scratch on game days. Not a surprise.

How often do rookie seventh-round picks who are fourth on the depth chart get to active status, barring a bunch of injuries?

Culp showed he could go deep down the seam when he got into the Bucs’ final two games of the regular season with five catches for 88 yards.

In a win over the Stinking Panthers, Culp’s first game, he caught all four passes targeted his direction. One catch was good for 26 yards as he ended the day with 52 yards receiving and moved the chains twice.

Not a bad debut for a seventh-round pick.

Since he spent the year with the Bucs, he got to know new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, an assistant last season.

Asked yesterday in a media availability at One Buc Palace if the Bucs could lead the league in offense with all the weapons returning, Culp didn’t hesitate to suggest yes, the Bucs can.

“Yeah, I mean, I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t be the best offense in the league,” Culp said. “Last year, statistically-wise, we were top five in a lot of categories, and I think as we step into this next year together, there’s just going to be even more camaraderie, even more trust, and just even better chemistry and feel for how we want to play the game with one another.

“I think there’s no reason why we couldn’t be at the top.”

Joe doesn’t believe Grizzard’s offense is going to be a carbon copy of Liam Coen’s offense. So Joe thinks there will be a learning curve.

But let’s think about this for a second. Coen, in his only Bucs season, transformed the Bucs’ running game from dead-last two straight years to fourth in the league.

Also under Coen, the Bucs went from the No. 23 total offense to No. 3.

It’s a helluva lot easier to go from No. 3 to No. 1 than it is from No. 23 to No. 3.

  1. GoneGator Says:

Lets just hope we can be top 5 again!

Watched the interview….Culp seems very bright and committed.
Dude could develop into a real weapon.

He flashed last year. Wasn’t he our 7th round pick?

  2. OR Buc Says:

I’d be happy with Top 5. Satisfied with top 10. Defensive improvements coming = much better team! Go Bucs!!

  3. FilthyAnimal Says:

Of course it won’t be a carbon copy, but if they’re using the same terminology, and tat seems to be the plan, the learning curve won’t be great. They may have to learn some new concepts, blocking schemes, routes. That’s probably about the same as year to year changes with any offensive coordinator who prefers to innovate and evolve from. The transition to Grizz should not be a big deal.

  4. It’s brutal out here Says:

Culp is a hidden gem. If you read Joe’s work about how Culp and McMillan had to learn a whole new language and means of communicating coming out of Washington, Culp in particular should make a huge leap this coming season. 6’4” running a 4.47. At 237 hopefully he packed on another 10 lbs of good weight last season and this upcoming training camp. That plus a full year of productivity out of McMillan is almost like getting the benefit of two extra draft picks this year. And yet another reason we don’t need to force picks. If Licht & Co can nail this draft, Look out!

  5. Obvious One Says:

I’m torn concerning that shirt he’s wearing. It’s Definitely rubbing me the wrong way!
Perhaps if I were able to read the whole thing, I “might” be able to turn this frown upside down…..

Come on Culp! Make Better Choices!

  6. FilthyAnimal Says:

The shirt says “Saint” not “Saints”.

  7. garro Says:

If Culp continues to show out we could have a very nice problem to deal with.

Too many seriously good tight ends on the roster.
Otton Durham Culp and who knows maybe even …can I say this here? Kieft

    Go Bucs!

  8. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Yup, just think if the Bucs had realized just how good Bucky Irving was at week one instead of the last half of the season as they did indeed. Great players can make their respective coach look genius. Case in point, Tom Brady and belicheck.
If I’m baker mayfield I’m chomping at the bit for opening day to start yesterday for sure, knowing my contract year is coming up sooner than later because a really good runnng back takes loads off his QB.

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

His name reminds me of Curley Culp going nuts on an offense when I was a kid. Him, Jack Youngblood, and Coy Bacon made me want to be a pass rusher.

  10. Brian in St Pete Says:

I really like this kid. I was telling my buddy that he has both the ability to get open and the ability to high point the ball, neither of which are especially easy to teach or master. It’ll be fun to see what a full offseason can do for him.

  11. Buc Fan in Phoenix Says:

In all fairness does anyone expect him to say anything other then something positive about the offense? lol

  12. adam from ny Says:

in recent years, a hybrid type big receiver / tight end has popped up in the league a bit, to some success…

now we have that guy too…

he could become an offensive x-factor for us…we shall see…

he is definitely an interesting specimen

  13. SB~LV Says:

The guy is extremely fast for a TE

  14. First Last Says:

If you watch the snaps he took last year you will see that this guy runs like a bat out of hell. I mean he is open way before anyone else. The balls he caught were basically freebies because the defender wasn’t even close. Baker didn’t even throw with anticipation to him. One of the plays versus Carolina you see Baker staring down Mike Evans (sweating that 1,000 yards) and then he looks right and drills it to a wide open Culp lol.

  15. Beeej Says:

Culp and ME13 are nearly physically identical, seems like we could do some stuff there, would need to run more 12 though, which we did little of last year

  16. View from 132 Says:

This guy was a find. Bright future. As for offensive stats – who cares. League the league in winning the Super Bowl. That’s the only statistic.

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

Id love to see Grizz bring in some Miami concepts for big YAC plays and Dev would be a prime target.

  18. Aqualung Says:

Culp needs to be on the field a lot more. He’s definitely TE2 ahead of Durham, due to his speed and athleticism. Dude made contested catches and almost looked like what OJ Howard was supposed to look like . I’m really excited to see this kid ball out. Of course the head coach has to allow him to be on the field. Both he and Tucker need to be on the field a lot more.

Griz! Tell your boss what time it is.

  19. BucsBucsBucs!! Says:

I think the Bucs should explore using Debin CULT a bunch more. With his athleticism and speed, how about a goal line fullback ttype?
How about a Tatsom Hill type? There’s a lot of gadgets type plays that this young man can do. Corderelle Patterson Anyone?

  20. BucsBucsBucs!! Says:

    Devin

  21. BigBoiBuc Says:

Aqualung – u see any of Durhams catches? Moss’d a few guys. And Culp not the blocker. TE3 is the right spot. Quit letting all the shiny new toys distract you….

  22. Fan of the South Says:

Bucs passing in 2024 increased 11% over 2023.
Bucs rushing in 2024 increased 68% over 2023.

In addition to the O Line getting better it helped to have 6 games against the 4 worse rushing defenses and 6 games against the bottom of the barrel in passing defenses.

Panthers, Saints, and Falcons are all going to be better defensively in 2025. Saying that it will be easier for the Bucs to be better still this season is not going to be as easy as Joe may think.

  23. David Says:

They absolutely can. Would love to see what Culp can do but just not enough balls to go around
