Big Round 1 For Jamel Dean

April 24th, 2025

Jamel Dean

Starting cornerback Jamel Dean’s job security just improved a whole hell of a lot.

With quality cornerbacks on their draft board, Tampa Bay just grabbed a wide receiver in Round 1, presumably not to fix their ailing pass defense.

Joe wrote earlier today about the unknown impact on the draft of the Dean/Todd Bowles relationship.

Dean said last year that he’s closer to Bowles than any player on the team. Bowles has treated Dean like a son and publicly acknowledged their bond. Bowles also said three weeks ago that Dean has been surpassed at cornerback by Zyon McCollum and is now the Bucs’ “1b” corner. Bowles also said he wants competition in that unit.

Well, that competition isn’t coming in the form of a first-round pick.

It’s a reasonably good bet it comes in Round 2 tomorrow night. If Bowles really wants ballhawks this offseason, like he said with passion in February, the Bucs might not have another option to get one.

    Barely

  2. Bubby Says:

I’m not nearly as down on Jamel as this site. We literally have zero pass rush.

  3. buc4evr Says:

too funny, we pick a small wr and ignore the defense. Dean will probably play 4 games next year and take the rest of the season off. lol. sad.

No, go to draft the best defensive coordinator available! Oh…wait?!

  5. Chris Says:

I don’t want to hear any excuses from Bowles about his Defense, Will Johnson and Barron were sitting there and we took WR. And Bonds with players and coaches don’t account to production on the field. If Bowles Defense doesn’t have an identity by week 8 him and Dean can walk the plank with their son father bond .

    Now, go draft…

    4th round CB can start

  10. Rod Munch Says:

You don’t need to waste a 1st round pick on a corner who Bowles is going to have just stand around in zone.

  11. Alstott40 Says:

Another year of watching repeatedly watching Dean grab his hamstring after getting burned on a route.

  12. PSL Bob Says:

I’ve been pleading to take a D player. Our D can’t get opponents off the field on 3rd and 4th downs. How is a WR going to help fix that?

  13. JReel Buc Says:

Bowles wouldn’t know what to do with a talented CB who can lockdown in Man to Man

and Sivorcea Denis, Bucs has a choice, LVD replacement or ME replacement

    Shavon Revel

  16. Joe in Michigan Says:

There is more to a draft than one pick. That said, it seems as if the Bucs have already forgotten what happened LAST YEAR with the CB sh!tshow. If they get a good CB in this draft, all is good.

What’s amazing is that Bowles had Dean and Davis as aggressive man-to-man corners and rode them to a SB win – then went completely away from that dominating defense to run this God awful super-soft zone trash. In this defense, good corners are completely wasted. Lots of idiots have no idea what they’re watching and think the Bucs got bad corner play – the play is fine – the issue is the scheme that has them just stand around and wait for something to happen. You don’t need a top pick to play this trash defense.

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Licht probably still has ptsd from the Hargreaves pick a few years ago.

  19. TheScourge Says:

I’m starting to believe Todd Bowles has absolutely no influence in the draft room. As bad as that defense was at the end of the season to not draft that side of the ball is criminal. They had their choice of defensive players and Licht drafted wide receiver 4. Hubris.

  20. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Why or why! Dean is the worst.

  21. Allen Lofton Says:

Todd Bowwes said it all, it’s a scoring league. They can out run you and make it difficult to double team receivers.
They fooled everyone. I love it

  22. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

5th round cb can start Didn’t say he’ll be good!

Zyon McCollum was a 5th round pick.

He sucked as a rookie, like most rookie corners suck.

The Bucs have 2 starting corners, and a starting nickel. Plus the safeties, so far, are sliding and the Bucs might get a very good in the 2nd or 3rd, and same with ILB.

The Bucs need corner depth – and that’s where a 5th rounder can help you, in the future.

    4 wr set

    Evans
    Godwin
    McMillan
    Egbuka

  25. FilthyAnimal Says:

I wouldn’t get too comfortable. We could still draft a starting caliber CB in round 2, and I expect we will.

  26. firethecannons Says:

we need to spend 2 picks on corners and bench Jamel Dean

  27. Saskbucs Says:

    Eagles… man.

Let’s go up if we have to in round 2 for EZ or Green. I’d like to see that. Then take DBs in 3-4. ILB or DT in 5

  28. Les Says:

The bucs again pass on corner .never addressed it , get burned every season because of it ! Dean ? Play 10 feet off all game ? Wtf ? Edge rusher ? Do the bucs Have amnesia from last year ? That defence was pitiful
    Pass d . Was awful . Needed a corner bad !

See, this is the clueless idiot I’m talking about. This dope thinks Dean is the one choosing to play 10 yards off the ball, and the coaches are yelling at him to get up and be aggressive, and he just refuses to do it, and the coaches are helpless to make him comply, I guess.

Wow, what a dumb low IQ take.

Here, I’ll help you out… Dean is being told to play off the ball, it’s by design. Just like it’s by design when the players are standing around flat footed waiting for something to happen. That’s not the players being lazy or just refusing to do their job, that is what Todd Bowles thinks a zone defense looks like in 2024 – and Bowles literally played more zone defense than anyone in the NFL last year.

Dean was drafted as a man-to-man corner, as was Davis. When Davis last offseason called out Bowles for his trash zone defense, Bowles ran him out of town. Bowles is telling these guys where to line up, and what to do, if they refused to do what he asked, they’d be benched. If you don’t realize that, you’re just not a very intelligent individual.

  30. California Buc Says:

We needed a S, CB, Edge, ILB, DL, and all backup center.

    Instead we drafted a WR.

    WOW!

You always want your first round pick to come in and start.

  31. Joe_bucs_40 Says:

@buc4evr He’s not small he’s damn near 6’1″ and 210 lbs. He’s a technician when it comes to running routes and he makes plays. So glad your the GM, I bet you’d have reached for someone we can get in round 2 haha.

  32. Simeon4HOF Says:

We are in perfect range in Rd 2 to take one of the best CBs that fit our D. Thomas or Porter will take care of things there.
3rd is the better spot for ILB.
Simeon Rice got our Defense 2morrow night, let’s Be Eazy. And we got EE.
Barron is small. Johnson is injury prone. Winfield the real deal.
CB 2morrow night Bucs fans. A good Corner

I am with you on this. I’m waiting to see how the rest of the draft plays out but was disappointed with our 1st round pick to say the least.

  34. ThatAintRight! Says:

For his price it’s not bad for a #1CB. If he doesn’t play it doesn’t matter though. Regardless he is healthy and very tradable right now. So I would look into that in the morning. Try and also trade white to an AFC team or to a rebuilding team for a high 2nd rounder. That would be cool. Looking to get more defensive help (2) guys minimum rd 2.

    ILB Demetrius Knight
    CB Trey Amos.

    That’s cool with me.

  35. #1bucsfan Says:

Zyon was a 5th rd pick Joe so competition can come from any rounds this weekend. One thing I’m not concerned about is this staff developing DBs the proof is in the pudding but that takes time. Not sure we have that luxury to wait for one to develop we need help this season. Maybe hall and is that guy to sub for Dean when he misses a game.
