NFL Network: Liam Coen “Coach Of The Week”
December 18th, 2024Better get used to it, Bucs fans. In a couple of weeks, you’ll be reading how teams are asking the Bucs for permission to interview offensive coordinator Liam Coen for a head coaching job.
Joe has been on Coen’s bandwagon for months. Joe understands how much owners want offensive head coaches.
Offense sells.
Some teams have a ton of money sunk into the offensive side of the ball. Good offensive-minded coaches almost always can get the most out of quarterbacks.
Always remember and never forget: It’s always about the quarterback. Even when it’s not.
With Baker Mayfield having success with Coen early and the Bucs offense rolling since the early weeks of the season, “this Joe” predicted Coen would be a head coach somewhere next year, either in the NFL or college.
So closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager, co-host of “Good Morning Football,” seen weekdays on NFL Network, took to his show to knight Coen as his “Coach of the Week.” Coen did the unthinkable, apparently, he crafted a gameplan that hung 40 points on a defense that was averaging 15 points a game.
“Liam Coen: Get to know his name well,” Schrager trumpeted to NFL fans. “It’s going to be popping up in a lot of head coaching conversations over the next several weeks.”
The only way for this not to happen? Team Glazer can take a step forward and make a major move for their organization.

Promise him anything and pay him a lot. Don’t think we can get lucky a third time.
December 18th, 2024 at 9:13 am
Agreed this team is so much better in the later part of the season, it would be awful for them to have to start from scratch yet again.
December 18th, 2024 at 9:17 am
I’m all for not letting him get away, but let’s be honest here people. We all want to get the lead dog job. You don’t hinder someone from a promotion, it’s a part of one’s career.

It’s a bit premature for all this gripping. I get the concern and surely teams will try to poach Coen who has clearly earned his shot.
So nobody, at least no sentient human being can deny Coen’s HC value is already off the charts and headed up. So EVERYBODY including Coen and his agent know his value. The Bucs know his value! Defensive C…er Head Coach Todd Bowles knows his value.
So how does Coen maximize his value? First he has to ask himself, what are the odds that this team cannot only repeat it’s offensive success next season but can actually improve with the year’s experience for all. IF Coen believes in himself and feels he has the players (Mayfield at QB) great young OL “the asskickers” to repeat his performance, staying is what actually makes the best sense! That means it’s up to the Bucs and perhaps even Bowles to help craft a deal that maximizes the benefit for BOTH sides.
As to “promised succession” that gets down to Todd’s desire to continue coaching and Coen’s patience to wait his turn. Maybe 2-3 year max for Todd?
December 18th, 2024 at 9:39 am
Maybe he’ll pull a Ben Johnson? I feel like guys nowadays won’t go just anywhere. You can’t tell me he looks at the Bears organization and how dysfunctional it is and thinks that’s a great spot for his career. TEAM GLAZER NEEDS TO OPEN THE VAULT FOR HIM!
December 18th, 2024 at 9:51 am
We wouldn’t even be talking about Todd for next year and beyond if it weren’t for Liam’s success as OC.
December 18th, 2024 at 9:56 am
What sucks–for us fans–is that being a great coordinator isn’t an indication that someone is a great head coach. The head coach is the CEO of the coaches and players. He sets the culture, he is the main motivator. A lot of the time, he doesn’t get too much into the Xs and Os. (see Arians, Bruce)
NFL history is littered with amazing coordinators that couldn’t hack it as head coaches. Coen may or may not be head coach material, but whether he is or isn’t, we’re going to lose him, and that sucks.
December 18th, 2024 at 9:57 am
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the job Liam Coen has done for us. But whatever happened to coaches being coordinators for more than five minutes before getting a shot at the big chair?
Didn’t people learn that lesson already with Raheem?
December 18th, 2024 at 10:00 am
Pay the Man, but if he leaves make sure his playbook stays behind… haha.
Being a HC in Tampa is probably one of the least pressure HC jobs in the NFL. Big Media kills both coaches and players in Big Sports Markets. I would hang around if they promised me the HC within 2 years, I think Bowles will cash out about that time or after a SB Win.
I don’t think Baker has had the same OC year after year yet. Crazy if you think about it.
December 18th, 2024 at 10:14 am
Schrager did a great timeline on Coen. Thank you for the video. Good for Coen!
Wasn’t surprising the teams he was mentioning where Coen could possibly go to. Any of those three will be calling. I am sure he would look at their players too. Our players are doing well. My naivety keeps thinking Coen would want to stay here at least another season.
December 18th, 2024 at 10:24 am
Lock him up!
December 18th, 2024 at 10:33 am
It’s called human nature. We all want to climb the ladder at work. We all want to succeed. If an owner thinks he’s qualified to work for him and the guy offers Coen a job/significant promotion at a chance to work at the highest level of your profession, who are we do say, “No?”
Just because a guy has limited experience as a coordinator doesn’t mean he’s not qualified. Sure, the Bucs may have jumped the gun with Raheem Morris (though he did have a 10-win season, his two immediate successors had more experience yet never had 10 wins in a season). Then you flip the coin and you have Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh.

If Coen has half a head full of brain cells, he’ll park it here for another season. Bowles has already said retirement is on the horizon for him. The instability at OC is nuts. Sure, these players are the cream of the crop at their sport, but let’s get real. Having a new OC year end, year out is a headache. The players have to constantly adjust. You see that going down in Kansas City? Buffalo? Detroit? Minnesota? How about DC? It’s not fair to the team and its fans.
December 18th, 2024 at 10:42 am
If he’s smart, he will stay where he is. The life expectancy of a head coach in the NFL is slightly less than a 2nd Lt in Viet Nam.
Not everybody is cut out for that job. Anybody remember Monte Kiffin? He knew what he was best at, and stayed with it, long term.
December 18th, 2024 at 10:43 am
Would like to see Coen take over after Bowles contract is up. Move Bowles to an adviser role like BA so that Coen can use his defensive connections around the league to find good defensive coaches.
Not that Canales has been a bust, but I think there were more expectations from him for his first year. That might work against Coen in some ways
December 18th, 2024 at 10:47 am
St.PeteBucsFan, excellent point! Think what Coen’s value as a HC might be if he’s able to stick a SB ring on his finger. Have him sign just a one-year contract and back a dump truck filled with cash onto his front yard. Hopefully, if not this year, then next, the Bucs will be sporting a Vince Lombardi trophy and Coen’s value will be through the roof.
December 18th, 2024 at 11:05 am
Liam has basically saved Bowles job because the majority of the season this defense has been horrible and that is Bowles baby. We need to do whatever it takes to keep Liam and if that means getting rid of Bowles then it is what it is. Either that or Glazer boys need to write a blank check to Coen and keep him.
December 18th, 2024 at 11:10 am
Come on guys. Your printing SB tickets for next year, figuring that if things are the same next year (Bowels and Coen repeating) we are surely in.
Keeping Coen is my priority, also. But we are a long way from SB talk for next year.
December 18th, 2024 at 11:11 am
you’re print tickets
December 18th, 2024 at 11:19 am
I think of Monte Kiffen turning down many HC requests to stay a coordinator here. I think Liam should stay with the Bucs for awhile since he is having so much success here. That success is nothing to sneeze at and jumping somewhere else, in a different job, doesn’t guarantee it.
December 18th, 2024 at 12:29 pm
“ We wouldn’t even be talking about Todd for next year and beyond if it weren’t for Liam’s success as OC.”
Do you not realize part of being a good head coach is hiring the right peoplto your staff?
And Todd Bowles had done that for OC. TWICE!
Maybe frame it as if it wasnt for Todd Bowles, Liam Coen wouldnt be even here
December 18th, 2024 at 1:02 pm
We can hate on Todd Bowles all we want but the truth is that he has done a good job, upgrading his coaching staff.
Canalysis help Baker in a moment of change.
This O Line is the best I’ve seen in a while with the capabilities of the Book Ends.
Who KNEW Goedeke would be THIS GOOD?
The run game is no fluke and Bowles stuck to his guns on the desire to run the ball.
It has paid off SO FAR and Bowles is a proud daddy.
Let’s keep this going and see how far they ascend.
Will the defense get better when Winfield and Whitehead return or will they stick with Merriweather.?
He has kinda earned a starting job the last few weeks!!
December 18th, 2024 at 1:13 pm
Geez…How many Liam will be a head coach next year articles can the Joe’s print?
December 18th, 2024 at 1:46 pm
I bet Liam may already gave an idea of which team he is going to HC of next year.
Hey Joes, one thing I bet you guys are waiting till the offseason to write about. But when Liam leaves and the Bucs head into the 3rd consecutive offseason searching for there 3rd consecutive different offensive coordinator. If every offseason we lose another OC to another team. At some point this going to hamper the development for upcoming offensive players right?? Continuity is pro teams best friend year an year out correct? Baker went through 5 different offensive coordinators in Cleveland right. That didn’t turn out well for him. And it’s got make it difficult for young drafted players to have lean a new offense every offseason and then have it to where it takes most of the season for our offensive players to get the new offense to a level of comfort and proficiency right? It’s possible that if Liam leaves it “could” hamper the development of Jalen, Bucky, Sean Tucker, Cade Otton, offensive lineman and other guys next season right?
December 18th, 2024 at 2:27 pm
Even worse if he commits to another team before the season ends. It doesn’t seem to end well when that happens. Hopefully he stays. Go BUCS
December 18th, 2024 at 3:05 pm
Liam Coen is an offensive genius. Would be terrible if the Bucs let him walk out the door. They need to keep him at all costs.
Tampa has the 3rd ranked offense in the NFL.
Tampa has the 27th ranked defense in the NFL.
