Top CBS NFL Scribe Believes In Bucs

June 17th, 2024

Winning.

You can’t go a week, maybe not three days, and someone at CBS is ragging about Baker Mayfield and how he will drag the Bucs back to the dregs of the NFC South just like during the Lost Decade.

Oh, and Kirk Cousins is Tom Brady reincarnated.

Well, the lead NFL columnist at CBS has a contrasting view. Prickly Pete Prisco last week attended a Bucs minicamp practice. Prisco lives in the Sunshine State and it is not unusual for him to pop into One Buc Palace.

In other words, Prisco is no stranger to the roster and other Bucs types. Good for him to put in the extra effort.

As a result of hanging out at One Buc Palace, Prisco concluded the Bucs will four-peat as NFC South champs. And one reason is Mayfield.

This ought to make Prisco popular with his fellow NFL scribes at CBS.

If you think about it, the Bucs have the most stable quarterback position in the NFC South. There is zero drama or doubt who the Bucs will start.

* Joe has regularly pointed out Kirk Cousins’ issues, the biggest being his recovery from his blown Achilles — at 36 years old. If Cousins is dragging arse after four games, all of Atlanta not otherwise distracted by the Bulldogs is going to be in an uproar screaming for Michael Penix.

* Derek Carr is anything but stable in New Orleans. He was a big disappointment last year. If he starts the season struggling, all of a sudden you’re going to hear Shedeur Sanders chatter coming out of the Big Easy (and maybe Deion Sanders chatter, too).

* Even if Dave Canales plugs the hole in the sinking ship that is Bryce Young, does anyone believe he will be playing at Mayfield’s level this fall?

So yeah, hard as it is to believe, the Bucs have the most secure quarterback in the division. No lie!

So Joe can easily see why Prisco is not of the same mind as many of his colleagues. He thinks the Bucs will win because of Mayfield, not the other way around.

I firmly believe once upon a time, Joe accidentally spelled PLACE as PALACE and just decided to act like it was on purpose!!!

This made my day! CBS is out of purgatory thanks to Pete Prisco. Yes, forget Canales, Carr, and Cousins. The 3 C’s. We have the whole team and Baker. Love the cannons will be fired video. Awesome!

  4. D Cone Says:

Joe can only hope Carr starts slow because down the stretch he was easily playing the best at QB in the NFC South.

Joe might also want to have Jalen McMillen chime in on whether the Falcons would have a shot against the Bucs Week 5 if they decide to roll with Penix.

Mayfield might be the most stable based on a good year but he is still the 3rd best QB in the NFC South no matter who you call outside the 813 Area Code.

  5. SlyPirate Says:

Awesome Video!!! Killer track. That snag from Otton was sick.

    Regarding QBs:
NO – Carr. Team doesn’t believe in him. No passion or leadership.
ATL – Cousins. Drafting Pennix killed that locker room.
CAR – Young. When has a Bama QB thrived in the NFL? Tua, kind of. Then you go back 900 years to Bart Starr and Joe Namath.

    Kenny Stabler. But yeah, generations.

  7. Beeej Says:

Carr went 4-3, Mayfield went 5-2 last 7 weeks, other stats look similar?

  8. Boss Says:

Bake is improving. He hit Izen in stride

  9. Trask To The Future Says:

Mayfield still hasnā€™t proven he can be consistent.

All those games last season where he struggled to throw for 100 yards in the first half. He had so many stalled drives an unproductive plays.

Itā€™s so weird how so many fans donā€™t remember all those terrible performances. He racked up a lot of yardage late in games when we were down 2 scores.

And yes, Trask could be a bust. This has nothing to do with Trask. Anyone that actually watched the full season last year knows Mayfield was mediocre in most games.

  10. JD Still Says:

The only thing Mayfield has actually proven in his career is that he has been consistent in his inconsistency. This year We will see if he holds true to past form, or if he is one of the very few who have been able to break such an established pattern of play, but , if he doesnā€™t , we still have Kyle Trask who is known for having others gifted the position in high school, college ,and now the pros but being prepared when the opportunity presents itself and rising to the occasion.

  11. Crickett Baker Says:

Penix looked very good. I was watching highlights of our new rookies and at least two of them were playing for Penix’s team.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

I think Bake is an accurate QB with a fairly strong arm and is smart reading defenses. If the O line can give him another second for the plays to develop, think this offense can be special this season. I just hope all the experts stay on the falconā€™s bandwagon.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

18th in QBR, 20th in scoring, last in yards and scoring among QBs that started all 17 games?

It certainly would be a strech, considering the Panthers don’t have an Evans or Godwin to bail out Young, but is it possible?

Those already counting Young as a bust based on last season need to watch some tape. The poor kid literally had no one to throw the ball to. Over and over again on ALL22, his WR’s can’t get open. If they get some decent WR play, and some better play calling, he could take quite the leap.

Anywho, Baker was LAST in QBR in 2022, and Canales, with Evans and Godwin, got Baker to 18th, in a career year. Could Young make that same leap? It will be difficult, but not impossible.

But, I have no doubt the Panthers will be better.

  14. unbelievable Says:

I agree 100% that Baker needs to be more consistent. That was obvious last year. Playcalling was also a part of that. There were certain games were the playcalling, especially in the 1st quarter / 1st half was just so puzzling. No rhythm or flow. We will have our hiccups with a new OC this year, but I do think they will be able to figure it out faster now the so many of the guys out there have played a season with each other.

I’m also really excited to see how guys like Diaby, Kancey, Palmer and Otton progress with another season under their belts. Hoping they all take HUGE strides.

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

Joe, this is your best column in a while. Very intriguing. Atlanta is going to find out that when you have two QBs you have none. I never liked Carr. I was elated when we signed Baker over him as I waited for a pizza. I conversed with another Bucs fan, also waiting for his pie and he was ecstatic too. Bryce Young? His team has no draft picks. Go BUCS!!!

  16. Saskbucs Says:

D Cone! Hahaha come on man! I admit I donā€™t watch the Saints unless itā€™s against the Bucs or they are only game in primetime but Carr is nothing. What has that guy done? I would say heā€™s as inconsistent as Mayfield and you can put Cousins in that boat as well.

Until any of those other NFC South QBs have more playoff wins than Baker, he is #1 in the division.

  17. Fred McNeil Says:

    GO BUCS!!!

  18. Fred McNeil Says:

Saskbucs, Carr is just good enough to get you fired.

  19. Gipper Says:

Not going to get anywhere with the shamamateurs on this blog who routinely run down Baker. I believe most of them are dealing with huge inferiority complexes from being repeatedly cut from high school athletic teams. Most found a modicum of success marching in the school band. Nothing wrong with that. Somebody has to do it. Chief among the band kids, I believe. is RodMunch.

I usually donā€™t debate but beings you asked. Neither Carr or Mayfield have a Ring so I suppose next would be Pro Bowls. Carr 4 Pro Bowl appearances, won precision passing with a high score of 31. No MVP was awarded that year but Carr certainly could have won it. 4 Pro Bowls when 3 seasons were on a losing team means he was playing very well. Mayfield has a couple playoff wins where teams imploded. Played well in one loss and gave the game away in the other.

If a QB makes the Pro Bowl this season from the NFC South Carr has to be the favorite with 4 in 10, then Cousins 4 in 12 and followed by Mayfield with 1 in 6.

Would not count out Bryce Young with Canales because Geno Smith and Mayfield made Pro Bowls after one season working with him.

  23. PowerOfPewter Says:

Priscilla has at least watched the Bucs, unlike most of the national blowhards. Canales leaving was a blessing in disguiseā€¦ Coen is head and shoulders better. Mayfield will have a good year, thanks to better play-calling, better OLine, and an improved running game. The NFC South title still has to go through the Bucs.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

Trashk to the Stupid notes that nobody remembers the things he refers to, and there is a reason.

It didnā€™t happen as the Trashk fondler would like to remember it.

Trashk Glennon has peaked and is already on the downside of his career.

  25. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Mayfield is the least of the Bucs problems.
Thereā€™s a reason he dons a great big C on his jersey.
He earned the old fashioned way.

  26. Leopold Stotch Says:

Wish I wouldn’t have watched that. I’m hyped and want it to be football season NOW!

  27. BAā€™s Red Pen Says:

Good one Dave. ā€œTrashk to the Stupid,ā€ is hilarious. Iā€™d watch my back thoughā€¦ā€¦ The occult of Trask is watching you now šŸ‘€

  31. Mark Alstott Says:

Lots of comments here about Baker and his inconsistencies, stalled drives, and lack of yds/tds in the first half of games. Interesting that there is no mention to the amount of drops that killed drives, why is that? The playoff game against the Iggles is a prime example. 10 dropped passes in that game, most occurring in the first half. Evans, Otton, and Godwin all dropped tds, as well as passes that would have continued drives. Is Baker perfect, no absolutely not. Is it correct to place all the blame squarely on his shoulders? No, absolutely not! Dropped passes, penalties, and bad play calling/formations all contribute to this. I think with a beefed up o-line, better play out of the defensive backfield, and the semblance of a running game will go a long way in how this team plays this season. How about letting them get the pads on and playing something meanful besides underware football.
