Todd Bowles Lands On Top-5 Hot Seat List

June 9th, 2024

Those at One Buc Palace who keep score when it comes to lack of respect from big-name national analysts will be searching for their Sharpies and screenshots on this one.

In January, the Bucs were a few plays from landing in the NFC Championship game after falling just short against media darling head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions in their raucous crib.

Not only was that not good enough for Todd Bowles to be considered a top-10 NFL head coach, per astute BSPN analyst Mina Kimes (and Joe’s not being sarcastic; she’s a strong analyst), but Kimes recently spoke about how Bowles is a coach she considers to be entering a hot seat season.

While Kimes likes the Bucs’ prospects in 2024, she thinks Bowles potentially is one of the NFL’s five most endangered coaches.

“If stuff goes absolutely sideways,” to use Kimes’ words, then Bowles is in big trouble.

“The Bucs basically are running it back,” Kimes said on her ESPN show. “If they’re really bad — I don’t think they will be, so I want to be clear — but if that were to happen, he is a guy I could see them saying, ‘You know, this was a mistake.'”

So has Kimes lost her mind?

Joe absolutely agrees that Bowles would be in trouble if the Bucs somehow finished with a losing record and a third-place finish in the NFC South. That would represent a major step backward. And Kimes is right; the Bucs are basically running it back after limited action in free agency.

However, Joe can’t put Bowles on a top-5 hot seat list like Kimes did. That’s outrageous.

Robert Saleh, Mike McCarthy and Dennis Allen were Kimes’ clear top-3 coaches most in danger of being fired this season, and then she listed Bowles folllowed by Bears head man Matt Eberflus.

If any team goes “absolutely sideways” then the head coach in in danger of losing his job.

Nick Sirrianni of the eagles would be a much better choice than Todd Bowles

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Todd has been a head coach for six seasons. He has only two winning seasons out of six and a losing record with two teams. That is a rare feat. I absolutely agree with Mina. Todd needs at least 10 wins or his new career as a sports psychologist will ensue in March.

  3. WiseCrack Says:

Same deal as last year. Baker and Todd are tied at the hip. Only an unfortunate event will change this.

So, if Todd is on the Hot Seat, so is Baker.

Just saying, let’s keep it real Trask fans.

  4. Crickett Baker Says:

She doesn’t sound astute to me. She doesn’t even think the Bucs will be bad, but if they are, Bowles is in trouble (5th best trouble). This sounds just like hogwash.

  5. Derek Says:

Mina Kimes is an Espn DEI hire. Not to be taken seriously

  6. Dave Pear Says:

I wouldn’t mind it at all if Mina showed up at my door with a cooler of beer and a bottle of olive oil.

  7. MelvinJunior Says:

I think she’s spot on. There’s A LOT riding on this season for both Baker & Bowles. She is 💯 correct by saying that if things go completely “sideways” with THIS Team, then he’s gone. And, Ol’ Bake won’t be very far away from it since that’ll mean he had a horrible season. They’ll go as far as Bake & Bowels takes them. It’s all on them. If things work out horribly, then they’ll both be held accountable, & there will be a real good chance that we’ll be selecting a QB in next season’s draft (or at least the very next). It’s really simple.

  8. Bobby Says:

Barring a season ending injury to either Evans, Baker, Wirfs, David, Don’t see the Bucs having a losing season. The amazing thing is a network is actually talking some absurdity of the Bucs coach being on a hot seat after Bucs nearly making it to 3rd level of playoffs the following season of Brady’s retirement. Kimes is also the woman who laughed and scoffed at the Bucs during our Super Bowl season. Not a fan of her.

  9. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

She left out Stefanski and Canales. Volatile ownership is thin ice always. Tepper tantrums and Jimmy the crook are two of the worst ever

  10. Cobraboy Says:

I am no Todd Bowles cheerleader, but Top-5 hotseat?

It would take a complete meltdown for that to happen, and with this talent and solid leadership, I don’t see it happening.

  11. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So…have the Glazer Boys extended Bowles yet?

  12. Beeej Says:

Team (mostly the offense) got steadily better as the season wore on, zero reason to expect that trend will change

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly, a losing season would spell doom for for both Baker and Bowles. Nine wins gives him a 50/50 shot if we don’t win the division. If we win the NFCS he will probably be ok unless we win it with eight wins again. If we didn’t beat Philly he’d be gone already.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

I think we get 10-11 wins and the NFCS.

  15. A Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah a complete collapse for any team would be hard. I think the biggest threat to Bowles is if the Bucs have an excellent OC in Liam Coen It’s not a defensive league anymore and the offensive coach + QB combo are far more important to the success of the team than a defensive head coach.

  16. WilieG Says:

I want Bowles fired IF we have a losing season AND a couple of those losses are due to poor in-game decisions, you know, like not calling a timeout when there’s still a sliver of a chance in the NFC Championship game.

But, if the coaching is solid and we have a losing record due to lots of injuries to key players, I do not want him fired.

  17. KABucs Says:

I agree with Buckeye (ownership volatility matters) & WillieG (my judgment of Bowles precisely).
I think Bowles MAY qualify in top 10 hot seat spots and probably for sure in the 50% least secure coaching spots… but not top 5. I think the close loss to Detroit in divisional keeps him out ot there.

  18. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Sideways horrible season and every coach’s job is on the line league wide – minus Andy Reid.

  19. Citrus County Says:

Overall I believe the Bucs have (after a half century) found themselves in a solid position as an organization.

There is a debate to be had over which is better :
…an offensive minded head coach or a defensive minded head coach.
That debate likely ends in a stalemate. With Todd Bowles being well liked by his players and running a top notch defense, more than likely we will continue winning at some degree.

As I see it, we could be setting ourselves up for an endless turnover of OCs looking to move up. Timing will be crucial, but one of the future (if not current) OCs will need to succeed Bowles for the merry-go-round to stop.

That is a delicate position for the Glazers to be in and will require a lot of thought.

With the NFL clearly being focused on offense, I am of the opinion that we have better chances of keeping coaching stability with a lesser rate of coaching turnover on the defense side of the ball.

Maybe we could become a defense coach hatchery.

Mina must be a really tough sell

The Glazer’s aren’t going to take Bowles record at the Jets when making any determination as to his future (or lack thereof). You’re including his record in NY is absolutely irrelevant.

His win-loss record isn’t wonderful here in Tampa as HC but he was promoted too late in his first season to choose his OC and we know how that turned out.
Also, the Bucs have been in the process of digging themselves out of salary cap hell. To get into the 2nd round of the playoffs last season given how much dead salary cap space the Bucs had to contend with should be something seen as positive for Bowles when evaluating his future, and I am sure the Glazer’s do see it that way.

I’m not trying to make excuses for Bowles. But those are real issues making it more difficult for the team the past couple seasons.

  24. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

^^^^ The Glazer’s aren’t going to take Bowles record at the Jets INTO CONSIDERATION…

  25. Greg Says:

If ANY COACH enters a season with a team demonstrably better than the year previous and the “team goes sideways”, which presumably means a 6 win season or similar, then hot seat. It’s a “what are you doing for me right now league”

  26. Boss Says:

    He should be unemployed

  27. heyjude Says:

I wasn’t even close to thinking about Bowles being in the hot seat this coming season. The top three named are probably right, but what about Pederson, Canales, Sirianni, …

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Let’s see:

Bowles had a losing season with the best QB in history.
Bowles had a rigged QB competition to get his chosen QB in the starting role.
Bowles has failed to build a pass rush.
Bowles went 9-8 in a season where the Bucs had one of the easiest schedules.
Bowles made the playoffs only because the bucs division was so bad.
Bowles chosen QB managed to win one game in the playoffs, but cost the Bucs the game in the second game (and it wasn’t the defense like some people claim).

    So, yeah…hot seat.

Canales is not in the hot seat…most coaches end up with at least 2 years, even if they are bad.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the Bucs have a quality season, it is because of Licht and Cohen.

  33. ppthom Says:

My goodness, it was Baker’s non-playing decision to accept $4 mil to QB the Bucs last year. $4 mil!!! Who else might have done that?? (Rhetorical BS)He definitely wanted to prove himself and was rewarded with a still-less-than-average $100M contract with an out after 1 year. This is not Baker comparing himself to othe QBs but keeping the band together, hopefully for better results. Mayfield impressed me with his walk the talk and his football ability. May he not go south in the NFC South.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Baker had no better options, more than likely. He was happy to be given ANY chance.

  35. Brandonbucc Says:

    Female… enough said.

  36. heyjude Says:

@Buccaneer Bonzai. You never know when the owner is David Tepper.

  37. BucsFan Says:

    I like Mina , but I disagree.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is 18-19 with the Bucs. The loss total exceeds the win total. That being the case, Todd is a losing head coach. One shining accomplishment was to give Brady the only losing season he ever experienced in his life. That took extra effort.

The facts aren’t what some want to face.

A 10-7 in the regular season and a playoff loss gives him a winning record….by one game. If he evolves, everything could work out. We shall see.

  39. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Bowles is not my favorite but he’s not even close to being as bad as some of the other clowns we’ve had in here. I don’t think the Glazers have any desire to replace him and pay yet another dude to not coach the Bucs.

  40. stpetebucfan Says:

Bonzai have you lost your mind?

“Bowles had a losing season with the best QB in history.”

A QB who played the worst season of his career!!! It was sooo bad they made fun of it at his roast. It was sooo bad he missed the training camp, showed his true allegiance going to Kraft’s birthday party DURING THE SEASON, so bad that his mind was thinking of the Raiders or the Dolphins in the off season. Tom Brady is the GOAT, but he absolutely played like a scared, distracted, loser his final season with the Bucs and it rubbed off on the entire team!!!

“Bowles went 9-8 in a season where the Bucs had one of the easiest schedules.”

It’s the freaking NFL there are no easy schedules. Only opinions! Bowles had some poor losses, Houston after Baker’s amazing comeback, and some excellent wins like beating the Packers at Lambeau shortly before the Pack beat the ‘Boys in Dallas to wipe them out of the playoffs!!!

“Bowles had a rigged QB competition to get his chosen QB in the starting role.”

That’s borderline MORONIC!!! WHY would Bowles rig the battle for starter. Whose best interest would that be? Not his!!! He selected the QB that gave him the best chance to win!!! Geez Bonzai do you also believe in Jewish Space Lasers starting fires in CA.? Some idjits here have even said they favored Baker to sell more seats! Yeah that’s the ticket start a QB with some questionable past off field incidents over the HOME TOWN FAVORITE. If there was any favoritism it would have been for the FLORIDA GUY!!! Are you guys smoking crack?

“Bowles made the playoffs only because the bucs division was so bad.”

AGAIN only YOUR BIASED OPINION!!! FACT- He freaking WON THE Division, not the Saints and not the Falcons. He has scoreboard and your horrible opinion can never change that as desperate as you seem to be to try.

“Bowles chosen QB managed to win one game in the playoffs, but cost the Bucs the game in the second game (and it wasn’t the defense like some people claim).”

It was on the road against a favored team with ZERO protection for Baker!! He made one bad pass, or somebody perhaps ran the route wrong, at the end of a game where the TRENCHES were totally dominated on both sides of the ball by a SUPERIOR Lions team!!!

Dang Bonzai did Bowles sleep with your wife or something? What could prompt such ONE SIDED negativity that made you create such a foolish post?

In the NFL, all coaches are one disappointing season from being removed. Owner’s and fan’s expectations run high! If they leave a season really disappointed then changing the HC or GM or both does happen!

  44. Buchen61 Says:

Todd Bowles is 17-17 in the regular season and 1-2 in the post season with the Bucs I think Todd is just fine let’s quit reading what the libtards are writing

  45. Buchen61 Says:

‘Bowles had a losing season with the best QB in history.”—he had a decimated online and the greatest QB ever had off field issues

“Bowles went 9-8 in a season where the Bucs had one of the easiest schedules”—bucs were predicted to win 6 games…they had a division winner schedule

“Bowles chosen QB managed to win one game in the playoffs, but cost the Bucs the game in the second game (and it wasn’t the defense like some people claim)—-tyoical Baker hater…he’s responsible for all the losses and none of the wins

    Do you even watch football?

  46. Defense Rules Says:

Dave Pear … ‘Todd has been a head coach for six seasons. He has only two winning seasons out of six and a losing record with two teams. That is a rare feat.’

What a bunch of horsepuckey. We all get that you don’t like Bowles, but your drivel gets old quickly. The ONLY winning season that the Jets have had since 2010 was when Todd Bowles got them to 10-6 in 2015. That’s ONE winning season in 13.

Do you think that MAYBE it has something to do with the organization itself? And the ownership?

And you know as well as the rest of us that the Bucs entered CAP He11 in 2022 to stock up for Brady’s last hurrah & are still paying the price here in 2024. The talent on the team that Todd inherited in 2022 was no place close to what we fielded in 2020 or 2021 (no Gronk, no Suh, no JPP, etc). HOPEFULLY we’ve restocked well enough to have a decent season this year.

And BTW, he could’ve had 2 winning seasons here if he hadn’t opted to rest the starters in the second half of the last Falcons game in 2022 (we were ahead 17-10 at the half & doing quite well). I didn’t agree with his choice, but I understand the logic.

  47. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … ‘Bowles had a losing season with the best QB in history.’

You’re starting to sound more & more like Dave Pear Bonzai. The ‘best QB in history’ was a shell of himself in 2022, and you danged well know it. Tampa was the last place that he wanted to be, and it showed on the field.

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

I think Bowles is retiring from football after this year because he’s already said it that he’s not coaching at 70 year old. And Bowles is already in his 60’s and plus he he’s talked about watching his son’s play and spending more time with his family. So I think he’s done after this season regardless win or lose and if I’m the Glazers I pay good Money for the Lions OC to be our next HC . I know the Baker fans will be mad because that means we will have a new quarterback by week 8 next year. Are less Baker Mayfield plays like Jerry Golf or have 35 tds with 10 picks.

ESPN talks shit just to hear themselves talk

  51. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Didn’t BA just say he recommended mayfield to Licht& Bowles u people can’t read it wasn’t Bowles idea it was ariens now why don’t u say the same crap bout Bruce as u do Bowles read Ira post from today there r way to many jackasses on this site

  52. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Let’s be honest. Whatever you think of Bowles, he is an AWFUL in game coach. He can’t keep track of time, timeouts or figure anything out in the last 2 minutes of either half.

  53. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Wow some tough critics. I love the way everyone out there in media can just come up with some straight out of left field sh!t and everyone roll with it. We’ve done the best we could trying to get out of cap hell, and if all went south last season where would we be right now? New coach, completely new staff, who knows what else and we’d have a losing season on our hands. Believe, one more time Believe.. Chucky won a Superbowl and went to the dump a few seasons before he was canned. And let’s not mention the lost decade when everything sucked. Let’s Go Bucs!!!! There’s a lot of Talent on this team and things got better on the offensive line, at least a wake up call with the Carlton Davis trade…

  54. TF Says:

I think Bowles ABSOLUTELY should be concerned about his job security. He has been very ordinary with his time here because of his inconsistent decision making and underachieving with multiple HOFers. That being said his coaching seat is only “warm”. He just came off a division championship. Which takes the spotlight off of the coaching blunders he has made in the past. He is NOT in the top 5. I think 7 or 8 is more accurate because of what success he accomplished last year with the help of Canales, Evans and company. He may be at the mercy of Baker and if Baker can replicate what he did last year. Bowles naysayers will eat crow. If the Bucs regress, by the end of the season, after at least 5-6 other coaches being fired. He may quietly retire. But the front office probably won’t “fire” him. No way.

  55. Bucben61 Says:

“there r way to many jackasses on this site”

I’m beginning to think the same thing…I bet most hopped on the bucs train with Tom Brady…he hopped off and you can as well.

  56. Dave Pear Says:

    18-19.

    That’s Todd’s Bucs record. It’s a fact.

Brady was the only reason in 2022 that Bowels won 8 games instead of 4.

Todd went soft against Atlanta, giving Brady the only losing season he ever experienced, at a time when the team seemed to be shedding lethargy after the 2nd half of Carolina game when Tom and Mike went off, and the first half of the Falcons game.

But Todd played to lose, and succeeded.

He then had them so flat for the playoff game against Dallas, a team that couldn’t and didn’t beat anyone else in their final games and lost the following week in embarrassing fashion – that Dallas blew Todd out in his own building.

I thought that should have been it right there. But no.

So, we’ll see. Let’s hope Todd really evolves.

    Sure.

  57. stpetebucfan Says:

    @davepear

Like so many others here I gotta raise the BS flag on you. You are full of it!!!

“So, we’ll see. Let’s hope Todd really evolves.

    Sure.”

Sure is right. Everybody here knows your antipathy for Bowles exceeds any expectations for the Bucs. As long as TB is coaching you’re rooting for us to LOSE!!! That makes you either the ultimate LOSER or the ultimate troll! You can decide.

  58. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

Todd Bowles is a top ten coach in the NFL. The job he did last year most coaches could nut have done second youngest team in nfl with a journeyman Qb and a rb who nobody thought was a nfl starter. 80 million in dead cap space! All he did was win the divsion win a playoff game and hung tough for 4 quarters in Detroit.

I don’t care about the Jets the job he has done here has been awsome he deserves respect!

The Bucs are a playoff team this year probably a wild card not sure they will get through first round but Bowles will live up to those expectations!

  59. garro Says:

LOL the usual supects have fallen for Joes trap yet again.

Trask words and Bowles words…works every time.

However Todd has been given Carte Blanche as far as staff and draft choices. All after starting with a Super Bowl winnig roster. Promptly blew up the staff with his guys as replacements. Took a top offense and …well… decided it made his defense too tired? Should he be on a short leash? Yup!

    Go Bucs!

  60. heyjude Says:

Oneilbuc Says: “I think Bowles is retiring from football after this year because he’s already said it that he’s not coaching at 70 year old.”

Todd Bowles is only 60 years old with eight years in the NFL, and I don’t think he is giving up coaching quite yet. Yes he is already vested, but doubt it will happen for at least two more years, maybe the ten year mark or after we win the Super Bowl under his watch.

  61. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

I told you last year, He’s not going anywhere until after the ’25 season.
He gets a full 4 years. At that time he will either be extended, or let go.

  62. kaimaru Says:

    @Oneilbuc

Uh, Bowles turned 60 just 6 months ago. Him saying he isn’t coaching until he is 70 means he will retire at 61? The stuff people make up on here

  63. Davenport Says:

    Career loser
    Won in a terrible division
    Eagles laid down in playoffs

Bowles needs to win big in 2024 or he’s gotta go.
