No-Hesitation Rankings Of Kirk Cousins Ahead Of Baker Mayfield

June 30th, 2024

Baker Mayfield

A couple of noted year-round film gurus set out to rank the NFC South quarterbacks.

They put Kirk Cousins ahead of Baker Mayfield without hesitation, so Joe was disappointed. At least the famous Simms father-son duo was a split decision and found the Falcons and Bucs gunslingers to be in a tight race.

Last week on the Move The Sticks podcast, NFL Network draft gurus and in-season analysts Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah agreed that the NFC South quarterbacks, in order of greatness, are Cousins, Mayfield, Derek Carr and Bryce Young.

Both are down on Carr and speculated that if Young isn’t performing better than the slimy Saints quarterback by the end of the 2024 season, then Carolina has a serious problem brewing.

Jeremiah, a former quarterback and scout for the Eagles, Browns and Ravens, can’t seem to get past Mayfield’s past inconsistency in his career.

Brooks is confident Cousins can post “ridiculous numbers” this season if he simply plays his game. The former defensive back got no pushback from Jeremiah.

Ironically, Jeremiah said the Vikings, Cousins’ 2023 team, view Sam Darnold as the next Baker Mayfield.

Jeremiah said Darnold will win the Vikings QB job early over Kyle Trask No. 10 overall pick rookie J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings will hope Darnold follows “the blueprint” set by Mayfield last season: cheap veteran turns into Pro Bowler.

Man, Joe finds this all this Cousins gushing incredibly annoying.

Order of greatness? I need no rings. Division is up for grabs, just like the NFL wants it.

  2. View from 132 Says:

See no rings, not need… need an Edit button, Joe!

  3. Crickett Baker Says:

The edit button is the one that says “submit comment” after you read and correct what you wrote.

  4. Kgh4life Says:

I still don’t get the obsession with Cousins. He had Dalvin Cook and Trevon Diggs in their prime and didn’t win. He then had Jefferson and Cook and still didn’t win. The falcons have lesser talent at the skill positions and Cousins is supposed to win. Smh.

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Kind of feel like Cousins is under a lot more pressure than Mayfield. He doesn’t have the receivers he had in Minnesota, and I think he is going to struggle in the first 5 games. Think Mayfield haters are going to be wrong again this year also.

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

There’s a large contingency of people in the media that were sure Baker was on his way out of the league. They are betting he’ll have a down year to say “I told you so.”

Here’s to hoping Baker proves them wrong again.

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Kirk Cousins, if healthy, will probably be good for Atlanta this year. That said, I’d rather have Baker.

  8. Dude Says:

Baker plays for a better built team, but he’s not the best QB in the NFCS. We split 2 games 1-1 with the Falcons and the combined score was 42-41 Bucs and that was with Desmond Ridder running their offense. Baker needs to bring his A game every game this season, no more 180 yards passing with Mike Evans & Chris Godwin healthy isn’t going to cut it

  9. SlyPirate Says:

    13 Years = 1 Playoff Win?

    That’s exciting?

Here’s a good comparison: Cousins puts up a lot of yards. Like, Matt Stafford did. Like TB12 did. Stafford and TB12 went to new teams and won Super Bowls. Both teams were loaded. Both teams had championship caliber coaches. Atlanta is not loaded. They don’t have Aaron Donald, Suh, JPP, etc. Atlanta does not have a championship caliber coaches. It takes more than a QB.

  10. 1sparkybuc Says:

The Buccaneer advantage in the NFCS is in the receivers. There are no elite QBs in this division.

  11. ScottyMack Says:

One thing I feel certain of is that Cousins WILL NOT post numbers more “ridiculous” than anything he did with the Vikings. Atlanta receivers are crap compared to what he had up in Minnesota.

  12. Just Saying Says:

Don’t these guys know Baker was mvp of the probowl, as an alternate no less. How many probowl mvps does Cousins have? Scoreboard Baker

  13. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Any Given Sunday, our beloved Bucs have a team, it’s just going to be one of those things just like every other season. No body sees them but I don’t think they’re going to forget what will be written in time. I’m pretty sure they going to the playoffs, so we shall see. Just thirty points a game, don’t leave your defense on the field to long, and execute the game plan. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

  14. BucVoyager Says:

I don’t see what the big deal is. We beat him last year and I expect to beat the Falcons this year. Do what’s expected of you and opinions won’t matter.

  15. Knothead71 Says:

Meh. Whatever, for the most part all of the media is full of crap. Let’s see what happens when them boys take the field. This is why they play the game.
I think our team will be good. GO BUCS+

  16. Richard Says:

All this talk about Cousins is just fuel for Baker.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Just Saying Says:
“Don’t these guys know Baker was mvp of the probowl, as an alternate no less. How many probowl mvps does Cousins have? Scoreboard Baker”

Do you know what earned him that? The probowl was mostly drills and exercises. It isn’t even a football game any more.

I would rather our players NOT make that joke of an award.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Cousins will be injured…probably against the headhunters (Saints).

I think the media dissing Baker has more to do with Cousins being closer to the end of his career.

Baker Mayfield did just enough to get an under-valued contract. He earned his role this year…what he does with this chance will truly determine his (and Bowels) future.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Calling Darnold the next Baker is even more ridiculous than the gushing over Kirk’s Cousin. Mayfield went to the playoffs as a rookie. Darnold can’t even wipe his butt if you remind him where it is. Poppycock.

  20. DCone Says:

As long as there are guys like Pear creating Mayfield Facts he will certainly be in the HOF

  21. Booger Says:

I don’t have a problem with them saying that Cousins is a better QB than Baker. My problem is all this ATL talk, blowin’ ‘em up and anointing them as the overwhelming Division favorites, with a 36 year old QB coming off a torn achilles injury. Baker can change the perception on who’s better moving forwards, after this season. Baker has to progress and surpass what he did last season, in order to make everyone else buy-in & believe. He needs to be better and a lot more consistent. He has to perform at a high level for an entire season and a lot closer to how he played towards the end of last season (minus Carolina, of course). There’s going to be a ‘clunker’ in there every now and then, but only HE can change the overall perception.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

DCone you got me. Obviously never followed the fecal Browns. Baker was runner up OROY that season and got the 0-31 Fecals close to the playoffs.

The comparison to Darnold is no less silly. Darnold could lose his way on a straight road.

  23. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

It just seems there are a lot of talking heads still butt hurt about how wrong they were about the Bucs last year. They are all waiting for the chance to say “see, I was just off by a year”.

A lot of useless analysts’ credibility futures seem to be tied to the Bucs having a bad year. If they get it wrong twice in a row their heads will explode.

A lot of the useless chatter heads are easy to spot. They are the ones calling the Bucs an “aging team”.

  24. Beeej Says:

Like Dave said, Baker has greatness in his past, Darnold has never sniffed

  25. heyjude Says:

A Bucs Fan Says: “Here’s to hoping Baker proves them wrong again.”

Exactly right! Being the 2nd year with the Bucs and with OC Coen who he has history with, Baker will do it.

  26. Paul Says:

Hmm…the only reason that Mayfield was even a Pro Bowler was that Kirk got hurt.

  27. Paul Says:

Kirk is a better quarterback than Mayfield for one simple reason….consistency every season. Not counting last season obviously, Kirk throws 4000+ yards and 30+ TDs every season like clockwork. After SEVEN years in the league, Mayfield has had one 4000 yard season and that was barely over 4000 yards. He has never thrown 30 TDs. He’s also never had a passer rating (for the season) that was over 100. In Kirk’s nine seasons as a starter, he’s had five seasons of a passer rating of 100+.

To believe that Mayfield is better than Kirk after ONE good season is delusional thinking. Add to that, his win-loss record is 42-47 which is the very definition of below average.

@Buccaneer Bonzai … Kirk is most definitely not at the end of his career. He’s 35, not 40. He does everything that Brady does and takes it one step further. Kirk was an aspiring doctor in college and approaches his training like a meticulously planned science project, fact-based and leaving nothing to chance.

#1 Notoriously meticulous in his approach, Kirk did more than adopt Brady’s TB12 diet. He sought out a scientific explanation of the way his body processes food based on bloodwork analysis. The test identified the type of food the body is sensitive to and, as a result, must expend extra energy to process.

#2 Just like Brady, Kirk does pliability training. But he takes it one step further and also trains for all three planes of motion in his body: the sagittal plane, frontal plane and transverse plane all of which are taxed by the quarterback position.

#3 He also has a hyperbaric chamber (also like Brady) and a full-time body coach (like Mahomes). But he takes it one step further and had stem cell therapy at the beginning of the year.

  28. Obvious Says:

Hmm. Cousins does all of that AND STILL blew out his Achilles. So then whatever he’s doing ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!

Why that must be very frustrating for Cousins…. All for nothing.

I have a further thought about Cousins and it goes like this….. SCREW COUSINS and the LOUSY team he plays for now. Now that the Vikings have THROWN HIM OUT THE DOOR!

In the end, BAKER HAS a better play off record for as bad as some of you claim he is and Cousins has steadily GONE NOWHERE HIS ENTIRE CAREER!

Put THAT in your pipe.and smoke it…….

  29. Crickett Baker Says:

Wow, Paul. Where did you find all that out? He sure is trying, if true. I hope his ME’s don’t sink him. 🙂

  30. Randal Parmer Says:

Paul it is easy to be consistent with the TEAM and Franchise Cousins had. Baker played for CLEVELAND and they intentionally crapped on him. Now u guys like winning so does Baker I would take him over Cousins any day. Cousins will PUKE when he is needed most. Hopefully Baker does not get hurt.

  31. ShindlersLisp Says:

Penix is playing by week six due to injury and sever white-ness… free lil woody lol

  32. ShindlersLisp Says:

D*** Joe I thought you’d be the last person to be censoring some free speech, especially when it’s Fair play, letting Paul know how bad he sucks at football takes and sucks at life in general, both of the should be ashamed of yourself for differnt reasons but i thought at least you Joebucsfan was better than that.

  33. Marky Mark Says:

Kirk has been with one team for a long time. That is the difference. We still dont know how his injury and age will affect him. I see this as a toss up.
