“Tremendous Jump” For Kyle Trask

May 7th, 2024

The man allegedly ‘this close’ to winning the starting quarterback job from soon-to-be Pro Bowl QB Baker Mayfield last August is progressing in a big way.

That was the hype flowing at One Buc Palace yesterday from quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis.

Asked about how backup QB Kyle Trask improved from last season, Lewis said he can see great strides already — in May.

“He’s took a tremendous jump,” Lewis said of Trask. “You just see how he commands the huddle. You know, just small things like that go along way. He’s out there with the verbiage and his verbiage is very long. He’s commanding that; he’s handling it very well. Obviously, he got his feet wet [last season] just being the No. 2 [quarterback]. You know, just getting those reps, repetition is something you can’t make up out there on the practice field. … You see the strides that he’s taken and I’m proud of him.”

Man, at this point, Trask sounds like he’s better than five or six starters around the NFL. It’s Year 4 of growth and progression from Trask, who is now under his third coordinator and has learned from multiple Pro Bowl starters.

No wonder the Bucs didn’t consider a quarterback in last month’s draft!

Lewis added that he doesn’t believe the Bucs offense would “sputter or slow down” if Trask is forced into action.

Colossal waste of a draft pick by Licht, especially when there is ZERO chance of any return on this investment due to his lack of film available TO any teams, definitely do not want him playing at all in the 24 regular season, but there are teams that needed QBs and trask has never been whispered

  2. Lol Says:

Joe can we get some John Wolford stories too? The guy has over 60 completions and a TD. I mean cmon man the TALENT IS THROUGH THE ROFF with this guy and you keep talking about Trask. Screw the Kyle Trashk Mob. Im apart of the JWOL Faithful over here…

  3. ocala Says:

Jason Licht has been a great GM, but when the Bucs drafted Trask, they would have been so much better off if they drafted another offensive linemen or receiver at the time.

  4. Tucker Says:

“Tremendous jump” and “commands the Huddle” etc. that sounds like a lot of coach speak lol

  5. BucsFan55 Says:

Could’ve used the 1st and 2nd round picks in 2021 to trade up for a better player. Oline that year or trading up for Parsons would’ve been beneficial.

  6. Rob Says:

It was an absolute waste of a pick. We could have drafted an NFL starter at a position of need with that pick. Back in 2021 we needed depth on the OL and DL. Could have drafted an eventual starter at LB or DB or RB.

  7. Jason Says:

Trask will be the first quarterback the Bucs have ever drafted to get a second contract. Lol.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

    ^^^^^^^^
The Sage compared Trask to Mike Glennon. Enough said.

  9. Permanently Moderated Says:

Best quarterback to never play the game.

  10. drdneast Says:

Please don’t give the moronic Gator fans any reason for hope. If the Bucs really believed in Trask they would have taken their lumps last year and started him and not signed Mayfield.
    End of story.

WHAT NO ONE TALKS ABOUT …
QBs suck up too much cap. Only 5 drafted QBs have won the Super Bowl in the last 17 years – Mahomes, Brady, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning (Indy). All the others were Free Agents. Most were not making close to the max. So, why pay a QB Mahomes money if he hasn’t won a thing?

    REALITY …
It takes 52 to win a Super Bowl. Defense wins championships. Franchise QBs are a myth agents and the media have created. When the Bucs won both Super Bowls they had a great defense, talent across the board, and a good game manager at QB.

    TRASK PLAN …
Develop Trask over the next 2 years on the bench. He’ll be seasoned but won’t have a market. Pay him peanuts to start and use your cap space to load your team with talent.

Man, at this point, Trask sounds like he’s better than five or six starters around the NFL.

So he’s the 6th or 7th best QB in the NFL???

All we will hear for the next week is that Trask has passed Mayfield and should be the starter…quit printing this rubbish

  14. de bucs fan Says:

1st round QB drafts MIGHT get 1.5 yrs to sit learn, and grow into the NFL. There can be success in waiting. Having 2nd rd Trask sit and learn this long from not terrible NFL veteran QBs is a way to think. If Trask is going to succeed it’s going to sit mostly in him. QB purgatory is the worst ending. Let him sink or swim atp. Offense is primed and Baker is a metric to measure against. Hope he kills it.

  15. SteveK Says:

It would be funny to me if we resigned him as a backup QB for the next 3-4 years. Some folks are so pissed we drafted him with the last pick in the second round. It’s great. He got better last year and now is a bonafide backup.

I’d say he’s a better backup than Jameis, and hopefully cheaper. How’s that, considering the investiture. Go Bucs, and I’m ready to Lol at the negative bellies of the Bucs resign Trask to a cheap backup deal. Kid might be solid, and hopefully we don’t have to find out. But if we do, I’m thrilled we have an affordable backup.

Do the same fans belly aching about the task pick, feel the same sense of loss as former first overall pick Jameis busting out of Tampa, or Josh Freeman for the matter? Those busts hurt worse bc they’re first rounders.

  16. Bee Says:

It was a waste of a pick to draft a player and get never let him play in a meaningful game. Is a GM and HC failure with Trask. And honestly, if he sucks then why is he on the team. Have Wolford be #2 and replace Trask with an OL DL player. They see something in him so that’s why he’s still here but just to have him sit on the bench even when Baker is hurt is senseless.

  17. Boss Says:

he better be ready for when bake, the situation pisses off the wrong LBer

  18. realistic-optimistic Says:

    Pro Bowl QB Baker Mayfield

    Still bangin’ that broken drum…

First, PB voting is a joke (see Winfield, David).

Second, the PB was played with 22 alternates on the field. That’s basically another full team. A watered down B-team. So HYPE!!!

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

Trask never had a chance to start. I don’t think it was a real competition. The more information that is shed on the Baker timeline and quotes from Canales and Bowles themselves it was Baker all the way. No way they’d risk their job on a kid with very little reps in practice let alone game experience. His potential growing pains would cost the coaching staff their job.

Baker was the safer choice and it worked out. Hope it continues.

  20. HC Grover Says:

Not hype….facts…or they wanna trade him to a team where he will win SB. As usual

  21. Cobraboy Says:

If Trask had brought the juice, he would be considered a starter.

Coaches see players every day. They know what’s what.

Maybe the Glazers are not high on Trask. They ultimately sign the checks.

  22. Crickett Baker Says:

When just about every insider at 1 Buc says there is a competition, I think those outsiders who say there isn’t are just plain delusional. Also, they got rid of Gabbert. You either trust the coaches or you think they lie.

“He’s took a tremendous jump,” Lewis said of Trask. Really? This is fishy. Are they trying to make it sound like he is improving by leaps and bounds on purpose so another team will want him? His rookie contract is in it’s last year.

  25. Tucker Says:

It’s a conspiracy they just don’t want trask to dominate the NFL lmao

  26. A Bucs Fan Says:

He will be gone after this.

  35. JimBobBuc Says:

I don’t have an opinion on Trask since he has never started a game. I’m not going back in history to see what should have been done. Let’s look forward. Wolford was terrible when he played for the Rams, but he knows the offense – does Coen like him better than Trask? Maybe the Buc showcase Trask during preseason and trade him to a desperate team? For a DL or RB? Maybe Baker goes down and Trask steps in to lead the team the rest of the year with stellar performances?

  36. Ol' Boy Says:

Thad’s cool. This is Kyles final year on rookie contract and he’s doing his part to help a brother out.

  37. 1sparkybuc Says:

I get the impression that if Mayfield is lost for the season, and Trask becomes the starter, there will be a mass exodus of “fans” here looking for a team they can support. It’s almost like Trask threw 33 interceptions last season. If we had drafted Purdy at the end of the second round, would we have “fans” attacking him? Absolutely. Trask is on our team. He’s not the enemy. He is not competing against the Bucs. Mayfield is a lock as the starter, no matter how he performs. Trask starts when Mayfield is in a body cast.

  38. Tony Says:

  41. Fred McNeil Says:

  48. Buclover1988 Says:

Trask was 100% a Bruce Arians influenced pick. He loves Trask. Believe it or not, the head coach, especially coaches like BA, have a ton of influence on who the team drafts. Trask may be a wasted pick, but if you really are being honest, the bucs drafting Trask has BA written all over it.

  49. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Sparky you need to realize the Baker fansbois are not Buc fans so they’ll never accept Trask because they know he almost kept their idol out of getting a starting gig here. 6th year vet Baker almost couldn’t even win a fixed “competition” against Trask who’s never started. Trask could’ve did as well as Baker last year. He has to know that he has to ball out this TC and pre season to showcase for a new team next year. The Bucs gonna find out real quickly they over paid for Baker by about $60 mill.

  50. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Go daws too bad your fanbois status keeps you from seeing what actually happened, that Trask threw nearly a pitch perfect throw in the corner of the endzone and the receiver DROPPED it. Guess it’s hard for you all to look past Baker’s short n curlies

  51. unbelievable Says:

^ Correct, he was drafted for a different offensive system.

But then couldn’t even win the backup position (or perhaps wasn’t allowed? Arians preferring a veteran backup, etc.), which if true, just makes the pick a massive waste from the start.

Can’t imagine the Bucs can trade him for anything worthwhile

  52. unbelievable Says:

    ^ That was @Buclover1988

  53. BakerFan Says:

trying to drive up trade value….. I don’t believe these guys for one moment. If he almost won the job then with all this growth he should be the starter.

  54. EEK Says:

Jose, was this a slow day? I guess you needed clicks.

  61. JD Still Says:

Kyle will continue to improve himself, to be ready when he gets his chance, whether it’s here in Tampa or taking a team to the Super Bowl somewhere else , he will be ready, it’s who he is , it’s what he does. Now Baker might, someday, get you back to the playoffs , ( if he can stop throwing interceptions in the last two minutes of games against good teams, or actually score a touchdown instead of relying on field goals , against the worst team in professional football), he may even get to the point that his won-loss record will inch over the .500 mark , but he will have to start winning more than one game more than he looses every year or he’!! Never make it before he retires and neither will the Buc’s.

  62. Dew Says:

Believe we will need him at some point this season.

    SlyPirate … ‘TRASK PLAN …

Gut feel is that Kyle Trask will be out of Tampa so fast once the 2024 season ends that it’ll make everyone’s head spin. When drafted, he undoubtedly was led to believe that he’d have 1 year to ‘learn’ under Tom Brady then most likely take the reins. It almost surely would’ve worked out that way IF Brady had stayed retired after the 2021 season.

Kinda think that Kyle’s ‘problem’ is very similar to Todd Bowles ‘problem’. Neither is very demonstrative, which is what the howling masses want to see in their leaders. MIGHT be very competent & effective, but the emperor has to act & dress appropriate to his position.

  64. Brandon Jeff Says:

    “Purdy” Damn autocorrect.

  65. D-Rok Says:

I’ve intentionally stayed out of the “Baker vs. Trask” debate. It’s a pointless debate. We’ve seen Baker on THIS team and we know what he brings. We have not seen Trask in games (real games) yet so we don’t know what he brings.

We just don’t know right now, so all the bellyaching over a wasted pick is just that: mindless conjecture.

Until he actually starts a few games, we have no idea what Trask can do.

I will wait until he plays before I form an opinion on Trask.

  66. Britton Tafelski Says:

Only reason it has been a waisted pick is because the Bucs kept as a third stringer instead of investing valuable reps into him as a 2nd stringer behind Brady. Also his coach who drafted him up and walks out the door, and the new coach isn’t betting his coaching opportunity on an unproven rookie.
Trask has received a rotten hand. He has tremendous talent, but needs to be given at least one chance to prove himself. Unless there is an injury I doubt he will see that opportunity here.

  67. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker is a total stud who resurrected THE BROWNS then got unjustly dumped by them because he played hurt nearly an entire season. He then got traded to an even worse organization.

I wish Baker AND Trask the very best!!!

  68. View from 132 Says:

The starting QB thinks he’s Mike Alstott, so Trask or Wofford better be well prepped to play.

  69. Defense Rules Says:

Admittedly somewhat off-topic Joe, but it does relate to our 2024 season at least. CBS Sports just published a listing titled ‘2024 NFL strength of schedule for all 32 teams: Browns, Ravens among hardest; Falcons, Saints have it easiest’. Interesting analysis …

‘Although the Falcons and Saints have the least difficult strength of schedule, they won’t have a huge advantage over the other two teams in their division because the Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers also have an easier strength of schedule. Carolina has the fourth-easiest schedule while Tampa Bay’s schedule ranks as the fifth easiest.’

Bucs were tied with the Chargers at 27th easiest Strength of Schedule (2024 opponents were 138-151 last season). Panthers & Bears were tied at 29th easiest (this year’s opponents were 135-154 last season). And the Falcons & Saints were tied at 31st easiest (2024 opponents were 131-158). Gut feel is that Falcons’ easy SOS is why they’re favored in the NFC South by so many in the national media.

  70. Durango 95 Says:

Have to wonder why does Trask always end up in second place. He’s had an awesome amount of NFL mentorship.

  72. Tucker Says:

I think you are right DR, Trask will probably be gone after this season. Can’t wait for the season to start. I really like the direction the bucs are taking, go bucs!!

  73. Craig Says:

Trask was an insurance pick for Arians. Arians didn’t think Brady would come back; he had proved his point.

He did come back and Trask was left to wither on the vine. I think Bowles saw enough in him last pre-season to be afraid to trade him.

He will probably be gone early in this season and will come back to haunt all of those who looked past him.

  74. Beeej Says:

Brady never got to play until Bledsoe was hurt, Mahomes never played until Smith was hurt.

  75. Vinny from NYC Says:

I don’t understand the Bucs fans on this site. It’s as if if you like Trask you have to hate Baker and Bowles, if you like Baker you have to hate Trask. We need a good #2 and let’s hope it’s Trask. The NY Giants would have 1 less Super Bowl if the Simms fans had run Jeff Rutledge out of town. Back ups can win Super Bowls and if it happens they could wind up back as #2 the following year. If Trask is improving that’s great news for all Bucs fans even those of us who like Baker as our #1.

  76. SenileSenior Says:

What if the Bucs lost Baker midseason and Trask takes the Bucs to the playoffs?

I’m not sure he’s a starter but I’m not sure he isn’t. What I do feel good about is he may be the most prepared backup in the NFL. I feel better with him on the bench than not around.

You forgot Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson, and Nick Foles. Peyton was 18 years ago with the colts. So 9 QBs won a super bowl with the team that drafted them in the last 18 years. 14 out of the last 18 Superbowl winning QBs were playing for the team that drafted them (Eli twice, Brady 3 times and Mahomes 3 times in that 18 year span, plus the others mentioned). Pretty good numbers.

  83. Capt.Tim Says:

Sooooo, guess we are gonna sign him to a second contract?

  84. drdneast Says:

The Bucs were highly interested in drafting and signing a QB but the Tulane QB was drafted right before they picked. The Bucs even said so themselves.

  85. Toad Bowels Says:

Nice Troll by the Joe’s. Nothin gets this place rockin’ and rollin’ like a good “Kyle Trask might actually be an ok QB article”….

…beats an article on the backup long snapper every time.

  86. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So…the only reason to even consider Trask a wasted pick is because the head coaching position has been filled with older guys who do not desire to risk their jobs on him.

Bruce Arians wanted an experienced veteran and got Tom Brady. He did not want to risk an inexperienced young QB backing up Brady. He wanted a veteran there as well.

Todd Bowles had Brady and an injury riddled offensive line. But He wanted an experienced QB because he had failed as a head coach before, and he refused to risk his job on Trask. So he got Mayfield, pretended to hold a competition, and made Mayfield the starter.

Mayfield was an absolute rollercoaster last year…but, he ended with an upside…enough so to earn the starting role this year.

I’m fine with that. Absolutely. And the draft results are extremely encouraging. The team has rebuilt the oline, giving Mayfield an incredible chance of progressing.

    But…

…if Mayfield goes down…or if he regresses like one of the Joes suggested he might (a month or two ago)…

…then Kyle Trask will get his shot.

And the truth is, no one here truly knows what the results will be. He could prove he is a bust.

Or he could pull off what a 6th rounder did for the Patriots all those years ago when Bledsoe went down.

Or he could pull a Jimmy Garapolow (sp) and earn really good trade value.

But outside of being a bust, picking him would have been worth it. We’ve brought in former first round picks who have been backups for us, so even a 2nd round pick as a competent backup is not horrible.

Bledsoe was good, right? Mayfield may well become just as good or better, but for now, I’m glad we has Trask too…just in case.

  87. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I !ean, sure, we could have picked someone else…and that player certainly may have helped us more between then and now…but if Trask had gone to a good team with a solide OL and offense, who can say how things would have turned out for him?

  88. toopanca Says:

I hope that we sign Trask for four more years cheap with incentives and that he becomes a consensus first team all pro QB.

But, when working so hard to keep the band together for a SB repeat, the definition of a win now season, you pick a player at the end of the second round (practically the third round) who you hope to start or use in rotation.

If you want a project QB, wait until day three, dig through the UDFA’s or wait for the cuts at the end of the preseason.

Looking at the next 30 or so players picked after Trask, only a couple have really been successful. Maybe the Bucs appreciated the lack of quality and really went with the best available in their opinion. But, in a season like that, I think that they should have chosen a position of need and taken a swing at it.

  89. Bobby Says:

Unfortunately, because of the way Baker throws his body around. There is a better than average chance we may see Trask under the huddle at some point this season. Trask will get a chance at some point to show what he can do.

  90. Obvious Says:

I believe Trask Will get his shot this year. Ira made a great point as he pointed out that the “odds” are in favor of our lead qb getting banged up. We’ve been more than fortunate that a qb hasn’t had to come out of a game for us in Years.

That is the Exception. Not the norm. Odds are Baker will be taking a game or two off because we’ve been just a bit to Lucky in the “healthy” qb state of Bucs affairs.
Add in the fact that for some reason Baker believes he’s over 300 lbs, can take any and all hits, and he plays Balls to the Wall while “in reality” has a modest 240 lb frame.

And if he keeps tempting fate, he’s SURE TO eventually get BLOWN UP BIG, and will be watching from the sidelines for a game or 2. At which time Trask WILL get his shot.

Chances are high that it’s Going To play out “just as predicted”. Now if Baker would play just a touch more conservatively……. But that’s not Baker. He’s GOING TO Go For It. It’s simply Bakers way….

Trask finally gets his shot this year.
