Todd Bowles Answers “Who Is Baker Mayfield?”

May 7th, 2024

So Todd Bowles went national today and was called out on a common one-liner heard at One Buc Palace.

Important folks at One Buc Palace like to say they told Baker Mayfield to be himself last season. Just be himself, not Tom Brady, and everything would work out.

Bowles went there on The Rich Eisen Show (Joe listened on the SiriusXM app) and was cut off by the host Eisen and asked, “Well, who is he when you say, ‘being himself?’

Bowles rolled into talking about Mayfield being fiery and having a “linebacker’s mindset,” and how much time he spends with defensive players as well as his teammates on offense.

The head coach painted a picture of the ultimate leader.

“He brings the team in. He gives them hope because he always talks to [offensive and defensive players] and when he leads on the field you want to listen because he’s the same every day, as far as trying to win every play,” Bowles said.

“”Not just trying to win during the game, he tries to win in practice. The way he prepares, he tries to win. And that gave us a different leadership when we had people from the past, when we had Tom and those guys. Because Tom was already established; Baker wasn’t established, at least not here from a credential standpoint. So, it was important that he came in to be himself and those guys embraced him that way, and that’s how they saw him.”

What struck Joe most was when Bowles said of Mayfield, “He’s the same every day.” That’s exactly how Bowles is described by Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.

Perhaps Bowles sees a lot of himself in Mayfield?

Bowles added that Mayfield “plays a very intelligent quarterback.”

Consistency is a wildly under appreciated leadership quality

If you can’t appreciate the way Mayfield plays the game then you might want to consider another hobby. Nails.

  3. BakerFan Says:

The Baker Haters and Bowles Haters are clinching their fists at this point. Suck it Haters.

  4. Doc's Take Says:

Maybe that is why he has been with so many different teams.

Love it can’t wait for the season to start go bucs!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Byron proved being the same every day is not necessarily a good thing.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

Nothing wrong with being an average NFL QB… He is still better than at least 13-16 NFL starting QBs but he is definitely not an “elite” NFL QB…

If the Bucs have a top 5 defense and are top 5 in rushing offense they have a chance to make it back to the play-offs.

    Go Baker!

    Go Bucs!!

  9. The Truth be Told Says:

We are so Lucky to have Baker. We have a good team to begin with and with having the most snaps by rookies combined last year will only kickstart the improvements overall this year for a good young team. Looks like a very good draft with 3 new starters which is awesome. Pass Rush Pass Rush. Braswell gives us hope and the DB from Georgia will start at NB and the Center of course. The new RB from Oregon is going to be a nice addition for the offense. This team is already a lot better than last year. Let’s get Baked! Go BUCS!!

Baker is the real deal. Bowles said it right and we are lucky to have him as our QB.

  11. Beeej Says:

Pfft. Baker has a low QBR

  12. Brassmky Says:

Baker has lacked consistency… But with a diff OC every year basically, I don’t put that on him. People are easy to point to faults without looking at the underlying issues that make a team effective. Look at the amount of high level low % throws that Mayfield makes every week and it’s easy to see that efficiency will come with consistency on all levels of an offense. He can lead! Go Bucks!

  13. Esteban85 Says:

Toddy Todd sure loves him some Baker. He may be the perfect marriage of a QB with a defensive head coach. I like the marriage and I think Bowles has definitely tied himself to the success or failure of his quarterback. With what we are building around Baker, it seems like a decent bet. Baker has the arm and the escapability paired with the mental and physical toughness to succeed as long as we can improve the run game and not depend solely on Baker.

When did losers start going wild with the stats but not the only freaking stat that matters.

What was the record? OH no the Bucs were below .500 last season! I’ve read that more than once here. Oh btw they were 9-8 a game OVER .500 and they won their first round playoff game to finish 1 game above .500 10-9.

How about titles…they won the 3rd consecutive NFC South Division title.

They did this after selling out to secure the talent to help the GOAT win another SB for the Bucs. SB’s are worth selling out but if you can’t pay the mortgage on the farm after it comes due teams typically SUCK! The Bucs did not…won their Division and a first round playoff game. I won’t go on about a close Lions game because the score did not indicate how badly the Lions dominated the Bucs on the line of scrimmage.

So 3 years after the SB, the Bucs drafted a great OL, another potential as well as sign some free agents. They probably have improved at RB as well not replacing White but augmenting him. They found a legit 3rd receiver to compliment ME and CG and Palmer may blossom if used properly.

At this point anybody who wishes to focus on the NEGATIVES is just a half glass empty kind of loser!!! The Bucs did not have the same talent for Baker as they did for the GOAT. Normal in the NFL for teams that sell out to finally win another SB.

Instead of celebrating survival and an improving future losers on #teamnegative wish to focus ALL their attention on the rough spots inevitably facing SB teams with a star QB retiring. WTF is so hard to figure out about this?

One idjit actually called a coach an effin moron simply because the poster disagreed with him. Where do you go for a bigger insult after that?

Let me help…in Basic Training our Drill Sergeant used to constantly scream “Trainee” you’re the lowest in the world..you’re even lower than whale sp!!t and that’s at the bottom of the ocean as low as you can go!

Someone is going to emerge in the NFC South this year – the division won’t be won with 9-8.

No power outages like last season.

  16. unbelievable Says:

Could have sounded like he was describing Brady, up until the “different from guys past…” line.

But we did hear similar when Brady came along in terms of being on the guys, communicating with offense and defense, jawing with guys in practice, outworking everyone else in the building, etc.

Heck, Lavonte David was talking about this a few days ago just before the roast.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

    Who is Baker Mayfield?

In a career year, the word is ‘middling’.

In not a career year, the word is ‘unemployed’.

  18. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Hell Baker got stabbed in the back in Cleveland, The circus act in Carolina, then went in for Stafford and at least showed something. Was pretty good last year, right? The draft was a couple of good choices, It appears the offense has some help to sort through, almost as many Online guys as there was in the draft. Hahaha. Just Bake Baby !!! How many years did we really dislike Tom Brady? Well he came to Tampa and put us back on top … Now all of you were madly in love with him. So we’re alright.. How many times did Baker put the team on his back?? Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

  19. What it is Says:

Baker Mayfield🤔 hes the guy that played 4 NFL games on a fractured shoulder. He played more games on a completely torn labrum because he didn’t want to let his teammates down. He’s the guy that said he would take less money in his contract so the team could pay his teammates more and actually did it. He won a Heisman. He’s the guy that has the record for total combined yards in a single game in college and the guy he shares it with, wait for it, Patrick Mahomes for a total of 1,708 yards. Both sides had 854 yards-exactly. Baker threw 7 touchdowns. Baker beat Mahomes. He’s the guy that came into the league and despite being on the worst team broke the rookie TD record while playing in 3 less games. While all the “experts” said his arm was weak and inaccurate he broke the distance record in a game and beat all the pro bowl qbs in the accuracy contest. The ONLY qb to go into Lambeau field and come out with a perfect passer rating-158.3. Hes the only Buc qb to throw for 300 yards and 3 tds in a playoff game. Only qb to play under 8 head coaches in a 6 year span. He took an 0-16 team with a 19 game losing streak to their first road trip playoff victory in FIFTY-ONE(51) years-over half a century. Ranks 4th among all active qbs with a 100.4 career passer rating in the playoffs. Took a trip out west and within 48 hours had learned a new system well enough to win games with the Rams. Hes the guy that some people complain about when he threw an interception in the divisional round and ignore the fact that while at that same team has a playoff passer rating of 106.3 which is a Tampa Bay postseason record. He is loved by his teammates and his coaches. He owns numerous records and will own numerous more. That’s Baker Mayfield. He is proof that people love to throw rocks at things that shine and Baker does shine.

  20. chark Says:

looking forward to next year with baker at the helm.

  21. chark Says:

I love how obj career turned out. What a piece of crap. In 2020 mayfield went 12-5 mainly without his sorry arse. Baker made jarvis landry an all pro and DPJ had a promising rookie season. Obj only played 1st 6 games that season. Clown boy obj got waived the next season 2021. Prior to 2020 , in 2019 jarvis landry was a pro bowler while obj and his dad blamed baker every game obj stats were down. Baker used Landry, rashad higgins and clownboy as his wrs. Freddie (unc running back coach) kitchens was their coach in 2019.

  22. BillyBucco Says:

Sometimes playing hurt, IS, letting your team down.
If IM not mistaken, that was Cleveland’s main issue.
Of course they had the ability to diagnose and sit him.
Im personally glad he is a fighter. Just wish he could hot the deep ball MORE.

  23. Dldub87 Says:

As an OU fan I’ve been watching Baker play for a long time. There is a reason SoonerNation loves him. He will not let himself fail. He just needs some stability from the head coach and OC. To be healthy, a fan base plus a team that has confidence in him. Give him these things , he will bring home another Lombardi trophy to Tampa.

  24. heyjude Says:

Well said by many here – stpetebucfan, What it is Says, chark, Didub87, and others! Baker is the guy that keeps it going. So happy he is a TB Buc.
