NFL: Rest Edge Much Ado About Nothing

May 20th, 2024

Claims not valid, says NFL.

As Joe has pointed out, if you believe in Warren Sharp’s rest edge, the Bucs are at a disadvantage this year.

Sharp, the noted handicapper turned stathead, has a formula largely based on how much rest a team gets between games. That determines a team’s rest edge. Based on this formula, Sharp believes the Bucs have the eighth-worst rest edge for the 2024 season.

However, like everything else, there are no absolutes. Last year the 49ers had the worst rest edge yet they finished tied for the second-best record in the league. The Bucs were at a slight rest disadvantage last year and nearly made the NFC title game.

Asked about Sharp’s rest edge formula while appearing on the “Ross Tucker Podcast,” the other Mike North, a scheduling guru for the NFL, said the league actually looked into Sharp’s claims and believes Sharp is raising a fuss over nothing.

The proof is in the pudding, North said. If NFL data suggested Sharp’s rest edge was a true disadvantage, the league would have adjusted accordingly, he noted. You can see North’s explanation below.

In short, North indirectly told Bucs fans there is no need to worry about Sharp’s rest edge stats.

“Sharp believes” is the key phrase there. Um, what about the facts. Kind of silly when facts say the opposite. Go BUCS!

I think Mr. Sharp. ran this up the flagpole. to see if anyone would. salute. He probably needs to find a new Angle.

A stat can be given to push almost ANY agenda. Just because the best teams in the league won with a negative rest edge, doesn’t mean it’s not REAL.
We wouldn’t make a big deal out of the bye week, if rest wasn’t real.
Any team coming off a Thursday game has an advantage.
A team should never have to face 3 or 4 teams coming off their bye etc.
it is absolutely REAL and that explanation is a cop out.

The NFL had “data,” on concussions too. They can’t be trusted Joe.

  5. Bucs Guy Says:

I don’t know if Stat is valid or not, but it passes the common sense test. Just remember that figures lie and liars figure.

  6. Beeej Says:

It matters a lot if you got guys hurt, the kind of hurt that takes a couple weeks to heal

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

The rest edge may not be as big of a deal as it’s made out to be, but it does make a slight difference at the end of hard fought games.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

A good coach knows how to prepare his team. They rest during practice apparently.

At least Todd prepares them to regularly come out flat as pancakes in the most important games, against anyone good.

Worst rushing offense ever but at least the pass defense is historically bad also.

Having losing records with two different teams is an accomplishment that will not be repeated. Lousy coaches get fired, but not the Toddster.

North, Sharp, East, West.. meh just white noise.. these talking heads have nothing important to say 😏

As about As full of crap as Joe. Just someone else trying to make a name for themselves with nothing to back it up.
