Mixed Media (?) Messages From Rachaad White

May 3rd, 2024

So Joe is a little confused by what happened moments after Rachaad White said his game didn’t get going last season until the final 6 to 8 games of the Bucs’ 19-game run.

Rounding off to protect the innocent, White was saying he didn’t play well to start the year and through the first 10 games or so.

Then he sounded like a guy little bitter that he wasn’t treated fairly by media for his 2023 production.

“Here in this market, nobody want to really want to like give you credit or give you your respect or your flowers,” White told the BucsGameday show. “But at the end of the day, sometimes you got to go take it. I mean, everybody wasn’t giving [NBA player] Anthony Edwards his flowers, but look what he doing now. You know what I’m saying? So that’s how it works in life.”

Joe doesn’t see how White has been slighted in town. Joe almost thinks White gets too much credit for his results running the football.

White noted that him sliding late in games a handful of times cost him yards last season, lost yardage that probably would have changed his stats enough to alter the perception of his game.

But say White did leave 50 yards on the field, a generous estimate, that lost yardage would have raised his season average to only 3.8 yards per carry from 3.6. That’s still an unacceptable total and far below the NFL average. So Joe’s not buying what White was selling there.

White also hinted that he’s miffed because his 1,500 total yards in the 2023 regular season didn’t get him at least a Pro Bowl alternate spot.

“Make sure we go grab that this year for sure, though, and more,” White said.

Joe hopes all this means White stays motivated. He’s a productive player on the rise with exceptional hands. But the Bucs are seeking more results running the ball, and it feels like the team won’t give White 10 games to get rolling this season if he needs the time.

Fourth-round pick Bucky Irving certainly will get his shot to impress. And White acknowledged Irving is “very skilled and quick “out in space, and White called him more “compact” than small.

I see no mixed message. I see a guy with confidence who gets the big puicture.

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Stop the whining, White. You’re not nearly as good as you think you are. Jesus God. A prima donna RB of mediocre performance. Just what they need.

  3. Buccos Says:

    An elite 3rd down back

  4. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

    He talks alot.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Does 2 3rd down back equal one Bell-Cow?

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

I haven’t checked the stats, but it seems that White became an important part of the passing offense in the last half of the season.
In the first half, he was repeatedly slammed into the defensive line, which always ran thru Hainsey and The useless combo of Fieler/Stennie.

Once white was used in the Flats, he was able to use his talents to make plays for the team.
The kid has skills. Just not able to use them, when you have defensive linemen around your ankles, as soon as you get the ball.

We added a great draft pick to the line this year. But like all rookies, Barton will struggle his rookie season.
We had two huge holes in the line. Barton is the answer to one of them.
If we really want to let white establish a run attack, we have to fix the other hole.
And throwing more backups in there wont get it done. We’ve tried that for two years, and we’ve been 32nd in rushing.
We had to replace Two backups that were starting last year. Hainsey and Stennie. We’ve replaced one.
Will we replace the other one, or will we finish 32nd in rushing again?

  7. WiscoJoe Says:

Run him outside in space and watch him succeed.

Joe’s on mfootballanalytics.com “The NFL’s Run Gap Secrets” article they do a great job of breaking down yards per carry in each gap and outside runs were the most explosive, efficient, and successful of any type of run. Dave Canales stating that he doesn’t like running outside because it doesn’t work is nonsense. White is clearly better in space so why wouldn’t you try to get him to the outside where there are less players? Especially with the quality of tackles that we have.

Note: The data is from 2015-2019 so it’s a little outdated but it’s the most recent article I could find on breaking down which gaps provide the most successful running plays in the league.

  8. SlyPirate Says:

IMAGINE IF WE WERE THE COWBOYS

More and more articles about Atlanta and Carolina competing for the division title. With absolutely no mention about the Bucs in the article or the comment section.

Imagine if we were the Cowboys: Super Bowl, 3x Conf Champs. Then, we resign all our FA and fill all our holes in the draft. All anyone would be talking about is divisional dynasty and this is our year. Crazy what a difference 1104 miles makes.

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Rachaad may enjoy opening his yap and typing on the keyboard a little too much. E very five minutes he’s in the media saying something else. Like, let the idiots anoint Kirk’s Cousin as the Division’s Best. So what?

He seems to have the right attitude and definitely improved in two years. Joe is spot on about his lack of vision after a handoff. And shows little burst. Little Chase Edmonds, once healthy, showed more burst at times.

New OC, new beef in the IOL, and a new RB. Should be fun. Must be improved, it’s hard to be worse than last for three years in a row.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

He had props in the fantasy community because even with bad rushing he was a great fantasy player in PPR leagues with 64 catches which is like adding over 10 TD’s worth of fantasy points.

He really isn’t THAT bad a runner. He’s just not elite or someone that can make big plays without good blocking. When we drafted him I said he reminded me of Leveon Bell and I kind of still stick to that comp. Patient guys without elite burst but decent vision and great receiving skills.

Bell was great when running behind good Pittsburg O-lines (4.7-4.9 YPC 3 straight years after 3.5 YPC his rookie year), but then bad in other situations without great O-lines (3.2-4.0 YPC the next 4 years, with only 2 of those logging significant carries).

With great blocking I could see White having some Leveon Bell prime type seasons. But i don’t hink we’re going to go from 32nd to that good this year. If he can get ot like 4.2-4.5 YPC that’d be amazing. And if Bucky is better running between the tackles then give him the ball.

  11. zzbucs Says:

What I see is an insecure child with a very big mouth…..

Great catcher, mediocre running back, but he can talk….. (a lot of nonsense)

  12. Lowest Common Denominator Says:

    He’s talking about you obviously.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

    Shut up and play.

  14. Booger Says:

He got plenty of praise last season… I’d say just about right nationally, for what he is and did. Probably, a little more so, locally. Especially, on DraftKings ESPN Fantasy’s pregame show on Sunday’s… THE BEST NFL Sunday Show, by the way!

  15. Bucs Guy Says:

    Play better and talk less.

  16. Boss Says:

    lotta haters in here.

yall trying running up the gut every play on 1st down when everyone knows the play. I commend him for not losing his $hit and calling out toilet bowl

  17. Steven007 Says:

With as much ink dedicated to this guy, most of which originally generated from his mouth, you would think he was Eric Dickerson or something. He’s a decent back at this point. Average to slightly below average as a runner. Close to elite as a receiver. Averages out to about a B. But man does he love the sound of his own voice. Enough already. Do your talking on the field.

  18. MP Says:

Sorry. He can have his flowers as he walks out of the building. I want a guy who wants yards and money, not flowers.

  19. heyjude Says:

Does he want someone to send him flowers? I like White and feel he has been treated pretty good. Unsure what he wants as accolades though.

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

His avg ypc is on the OL and himself. I can understand he might be frustrated with the blocking but he’s s good teammate by not throwing the OL under the bus. However his YAC and missed tackles running the ball is on him, not the OL. Whites total yards were high because his number of carries was ultra high. If Bucky can improve his pass pro, he should get plenty of snaps. I even like Edmunds running the ball.

  21. Tucker Says:

Worry less about the flowers and more about the game. I hate when a player goes on about I should have got this accolade or that one worry about your game and if your play warrants it you will get your flowers if that’s what you are worried about. Go bucs!!

  22. Bojim Says:

I like him. Still a kid but growing up. Irving shoukd help a good bit and maybe Tucker will get it going. Second year breakout?

  23. Jeffrey Becker Says:

as if every back doesn’t have to slide sometimes

  24. Dave Pear Says:

The better head coaches and OC’s in the NFL have passed the defensive masturmind by. Even if he rushes four and they get pressure, someone is going to be running wide ass open because he’s calling a defense that requires a masters in philosophy and a PhD in subatomic particle physics to understand. The Bucs are a football team, not a Mensa club. Quick slants and cover 3 beaters work all the time. A quick passing game neuters the pass rush, and Todd has no answer for it. Drop the corners 7-10 yards and let the receiver catch the ball in front of you. Then you can miss the tackle and give up a huge play. That is the base defense now. Not good.

  25. Permanently Moderated Says:

One thing is clear. Grammar and sentence structure are no longer required in our government school system.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Joe doesn’t see how White has been slighted in town. Joe almost thinks White gets too much credit for his results running the football.

    ———

This coming from the same Joe who spent the entire offseason last year saying the Bucs HAD to draft a new RB, and spent every week saying White sucked, and even if White had a good game (ie, the rare games he got any sort of blocking), this Joe would act as if White finally decided to show up for once – without mentioning blocking or gameplan.

I like the Joe’s in general, but on some issues they just get stuck on repeat – then to follow that up by pretending you have no idea what the player could be talking about with the media… My gawd…

  27. Pickgrin Says:

First time playcaller and grossly substandard interior OLine are the primary reasons White’s YPC #s are low. The “average” per run was higher towards the end of the year as all involved figured some things out….

And Rachaad has a point…. Dude puts up over 1500 yards last year despite the above mentioned adversity – yet somehow seems to get more flack than flowers.

  28. Mike Says:

Just like Carlton during 2022 off season. Big talk . Carlton said he was gonna do this and that and nothing but bench time cuz he was hurt. Don’t open your mouth if you can’t back it up.

  29. Will Says:

@Rod totally agree with what you said about “The Joes” at times I wish we knew exactly who wrote which article so that you could call them out. Instead we’ll get an article that says “this Joe believes or doesn’t believe” love this site that is one of my major gripes though.

  30. Cobraboy Says:

This site is like bullspitting at a bar.

Other sites are more research oriented and X’s & O’s.

    I like both.

  31. Matt_PcAfee Says:

He’s is a VERY young man who is in the generation that uses social media to communicate and express their feelings. Like when the player unfollows a team, he knows exactly what he’s doing. Rachaad is a good kid who wants to get better. I would love to hear from Logan Hall or JTS 🤣

  32. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Why did Joe moderate my comment I thought it was decent

  33. SenileSenior Says:

With changes that have been made, hopefully his average per carry will go up and his total carries go down. Like his look and have noted many of the stops behind or at the line.

I don’t “know” that Coen will automatically do better than Canales with our run game scheming. Again, I am ever hopeful.

    Go Bucs!!!

  34. CleanHouse Says:

Should have packaged him int a trade with Devin White

  35. Brandon Says:

White averaged 3.6 and over 4.0 over the last half of the season and people want him replaced. Alstott averages 3.6 and people want him to have a bust in Canton.

  36. Tebowtime Says:

I see a guy that couldn’t find a cut back lane for all of the flowers in the world.

  37. BUCman Says:

Maybe White should stop talking so much and start taking notes from Bucky Irving who knows how to hit the hole and runs decisively.

  38. garro Says:

Maybe a bit delusional me thinks. Has he been hanging around with Diva White?

I do love that he is motivated to get better but I question his reasoning of feeling slighted. LVD, or Godwin I would understand feeling slighted. I think he can get better and I think a better O line and better play calling will help immensely!

    Go Bucs!
