Lack Of Impact Plays Likely Sank Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

May 5th, 2024

Too often invisible?

It may not be just lack of sacks.

So Joe yesterday reviewed 2021 first-round draft picks that did not have their fifth-year contract options picked up. Of course, one is Bucs outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. So now he’s is in a prove-it year.

Joe was stunned to see the JTS of Baltimore, Odafe Oweh, did get his fifth-year option picked up. He and JTS have nearly identical numbers and Oweh was drafted at No. 31, one spot ahead of the Bucs.

Joe could argue that JTS is better than Oweh, though barely.

Both have been terribly disappointing though probably JTS more. At least in JTS’s last year of college ball, his sophomore season, he had a respectable eight sacks. Oweh had zero at Penn State.

(See what Joe says about James Franklin players?)

But there is one Oweh stat is better than JTS’s, and it may be the reason the Crows picked up his fifth-year option while JTS is maybe 20 games from the end of his Bucs days.

Always remember and never forget how NFL coaches are absolutely obsessed with takeaways. While Oweh doesn’t have many takeaways, he has three times more (3) than JTS (1). And Oweh has six forced fumbles. JTS? Uno. Ein. One.

Oweh has many more impact plays than JTS.

So perhaps it ain’t just about sacks?

Pretty simple case of black and white. Produce this year or hit the bricks.

  2. lambchop Says:

    Makes sense

  3. Boss Says:

Wake up call. JTS will be the next will gholston……ppl looking to run him out and he turns into a solid rotational player. 9 sacks this year

  4. dmatt Says:

I don’t care about what Odafe Oweh haven’t done, our problem is what have JTS done good for us lately, nothing, nothing,n nothing. I don’t get it, our coaches are the professionals n don’t seem to have identified that JTS hand’s down,is a pure bust. As it relates to his performance, the following are my observations since 2021…confusion, slow to react, weak, braindead, shoved back at will, passive, lost in space, n just doesn’t meet the requirement of an nfl player.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

It’s just that all of “The Secret Chess Piece,” JTS mysterious impact plays are so well disguised and next level that the average fan can’t see them.

  6. Booger Says:

He seems to be the definition of insanity, with a very low Football-IQ.

  7. BucThis Says:

Who is JTS? I don’t understand all the articles? I thought Joe doesn’t write articles about practice squad guys?? Looking at the graph below I can only assume he’s a practice squad guy or a back up player. Clearly a starter wouldn’t be this invisible on the football field 🤷‍♂️

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

You see plays and wonder if a guy is actually a professional football player. It makes you wonder if they’re cut out for this line of work. A few examples, off the top of my head, are when Devin White “attempted” to tackle Gardner Minshew last year in the Colts game, along with way too many other plays like that. For JTS, it was when he let Desmond Ridder get to the outside of him in the Atlanta game.

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

If I had to point to one play that cost Joe his 5th year option it would be when Desmond “The Terrible” Ridder was able to turn the corner on JTS and then out run him to the pylon.

That sums it up perfectly for me.

  10. HC Grover Says:

    Get him out.

  11. Scott Says:

JTS is not that bad. He makes some splash plays and some plays in the run game. He was our highest rated edge behind Barrett last year but, was still pretty far back on like page 2. He’s just not getting the sacks we all want to see. Hopefully the newer guys step it up. It’s a business. Need to cut costs.

  12. Scott Says:

Nelson really needs to do more. Paying him almost 6 mill this year.

  13. Biff Barker Says:

Blow Tryon was always a weakling.

    Body, Mind and Soul.

JL, clean up your freaking mess!

  14. Hodad Says:

Maybe when Braswell starts along with Ya, JTS can be a good backup. That’s all you can hope for at this point.

  15. Capt.Tim Says:

    Sure both teams are disappointed.
    But good call, Joe.
Owah’s impact plays bought him more time.
JTS only ran into the QBs Vea flushed from the Pocket.
Chris Braswell will be a huge improvement, but He’ll need a year our two to get his bearings. All Rookies do.

We improved the team, and addressed alot of needs.
But still have a hole in the Interior Offensive line, and at DE.
In Licht we trust. Hope he finds some help

  16. BucsfaninOregon Says:

What I don’t understand is keeping that guy when it takes a valuable (or is it?) roster slot. As worthless as he is he is preventing us from keeping an extra RB, WR, TE or even a DL.

If he makes this year’s roster some serious player may have to go.

  17. Beeej Says:

the value of his roster slot has to be balance against the cost to cut him

  18. Marine Buc Says:

JTS is the Robert Hainsey of edge rushers…

Good enough to be a depth/rotational guy but not an NFL starter.

  19. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

Was there a better player available?
Like a center that could learn behind Jensen?

  20. ChiBuc Says:

Who needs edge rushers?! We have safeties. Soon the “defensive guru” will be running a prevent D on the first down of the first quarter. We’ll be rushing the QB from 15 yards back.

    Really ?
ALL rookies need a year or two?

He just goes flyin’ off the edge (getting pushed) off the screen about 10-15 yards away from the play, and then comes trottin’ back in after the play is long over… Every. Single. Time. It’s Insanity.

Dude, did u not see the deadbrain, bonehead play made by JTS when he could’ve had a potential pick six from Joe Burrows in a game against the Bengals 2022? THAT SUMED IT UP FOR ME.

  24. Pewter Power Says:

Yea I’m sure he’s getting ready to play for a new team which means he’ll play lights out which would be even more disappointing considering he’s sucked since he got drafted. Don’t think you’ll get paid from the Bucs just because up ball out for money. Make way for Braswell. He can’t possibly be worse

  25. Pepsi Says:

Player A – occasionally gets close to the QB, but cant quite get there, and the QB completes a pass converting to a new set of downs. and this is a routine thing for player A. He finishes the season with 5 sacks.
Player B – constantly getting into the back field, causes QB to throw the ball early and either throw an incomplete pass, an interception, or a check down that does not convert to a new set of downs. he causes the play caller and QB to purposely scheme and execute plays that would help mitigate against his rush. He finished the season with 5 sacks.
Player A and Player B both have 5 sacks. something tells me that Joe thinks player A and player B are both the same. in Fact I know Joe would say that their “Production” was the same. Perhaps Joe needs to re-evaulate his definition of production in some cases. I dont know what kind of player Odafe Oweh is.. maybe him and tryon are both player A.. but the point is there is more context for the impact of an edge player then soley sack numbers. one 5 sack guy could be mediocre, and another 5 sack guy could actually be quite good. In the cas of Tryon, when joe says “it may not be just lack of sack numbers”… good joe, maybe youre starting to learn. there is hope for you yet perhaps. Looking forward to you’re reaction when Chop Robinson has a 10 sack season in year 2

  26. cal Says:

another in a long list of bad JL draftees. Time for a new GM.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘So perhaps it ain’t just about sacks?’

Be still my heart. Did you bring in a ghost writer to pen this for you Joe? Have you fired him yet?

Personally I think only the coaches know a player’s true value in their system. JTS may not have the ‘impact plays’ that show up on stat sheets & that fans/media drool over, but they may be quite valuable in the broader scheme of things. Will Gholston for instance was always very good at playing the run, but his pass rush ‘impact plays’ were secondary, except for 2020. If you look at Big Will’s past 5 years (in Todd Bowles’ defense), he had almost as many QB pressures (29) in 2020 as he had in those other 4 years combined (34). Never got a whole bunch of sacks (19.5 over 11 seasons), but he nonetheless there was a reason that he stuck around for 11 NFL seasons. He became a valuable cog in the system that Bowles was implementing, although he did have to sort of ‘re-invent himself’ in the process.

  28. Joe Says:

What I don’t understand is keeping that guy when it takes a valuable (or is it?) roster slot.

Its called “investment.” Bucs have a first round pick and millions of dollars invested in him.

  29. Bucswin! Says:

He has availability. Has been pretty healthy really. Go BUCS #teampositive

  30. Joe Says:

    Explain Bosa.

As Joe points out often, the Bosas are outliers. Of the top-five guys in sacks last year, only Josh Allen had double-digit sacks as a rookie (10).

  31. M1K3_Fanclub Says:

I still think JTS is salvageable. He’s still young and he’s got plenty of starting experience now. With a few tweaks, it’s not out of the question he could get 8 sacks. I mean, he could end up being worth renewing next year, at a salary commensurate with his performance to this point. Disappointing as a 1st round pick? Sure. But if he puts up 8 sacks, and it’s better than other options in free agency, his original draft position is irrelevant.

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

Kinda surprised we even kept him for this year. But its all on him this season Do or Die..Or get a 9 to 5 like many of us.

  33. Joe Says:

Kinda surprised we even kept him for this year.

    Not really. See above (investment).

    _______

My issue was CaptTim proclaiming ALL players need a year or two.
    That’s just not true.

  35. BillyBucco Says:

    Douche

The word ”douche” is French for ”wash” or ”soak. ” It is a method to wash out the vagina. Only a guy who questions a solid take with MOST rookies by naming an outlier.

It is all starting to make sense though.

  36. Robert Hassell Says:

Complete disappointment. He just isn’t explosive at point off attack.

  37. stpetebucfan Says:

“another in a long list of bad JL draftees. Time for a new GM.”

I’m going to give this poster the benefit of the doubt. I haven’t seen him here before and I hope for his sake he’s simply a troll because that is the dumbest take I’ve seen this week!!!!!

  38. Hearty Dikerson Says:

The one good thing about JTS is he saves the organization money on water bills, as his jersey never needs to be washed after a game

  39. Joe Says:

My issue was CaptTim proclaiming ALL players need a year or two.
    That’s just not true.

Not all, no doubt. But Joe isn’t one to bank on outliers.

  40. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 is Bowles secret agent spy on the field. He is an observer. He watches the action and reports back. He is near but not in on the action.

  41. IE Buc Says:

JTS is a 1st round bust. I was in favor of trading him since he is just taking up roster space for another player that can be productive. Darby proves you either got it or you don’t. Immediate starter and impact. There should be no patience for 3 or 4 years of waiting to see if it will pan out. It hasn’t and a bust is a bust.

  42. Toad Bowels Says:

Maybe this is the shock that he needs. Maybe this is the year that he puts it all together. Let’s hope for the best!

  43. Toad Bowels Says:

Hopefully this will also light a fire under Logan Hall, her guy who’s biggest contribution to the Bucs so far has been leaving an enormous cap hit on the books after he was overzealous to make a impact play in training camp and ended the career of our pro bowl center.

  44. drdneast Says:

Now I remember why I quit reading JoeBucsFan. To many ignorant readers obtaining a literary license to publish. I am by far a JTS fan and was probably one of the first people to start questioning his play. But some of the things mentioned out here are just horribly wrong. First off, Nelson isn’t scheduled to make 6 million this year. He was signed last year for two years for $6 million total. JTS did have one splash play last year. He sacked Carolina QB who fumbled and the Bucs recovered, virtually closing out the close 9-0 game. I know, it surprised me as much as anyone.

  45. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Joe “just-trottin-to-see-ya”. Trotting back to the QB from off screen. Best I got for now.

  46. Scott Says:

Drdneast It clearly says Nelson signed a 2 year 10 million dollar deal. Of course I googled it before I posted.

  47. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Perhaps jts is simply in the wrong position on this team. Perhaps he needs to relocate to a linebacker type position. Like David, or Britt backup. What have the Bucs to lose, and if Jts pulls it off, the brass looks like geniuses.

  48. Mark A Swygert Says:

It just seems like JTS has no coherent rush plan. He does actually have first- step explosion, but lacks the play diagnostics to explode where the ball is actually going. It’s like he is trying to get to the QB via the scenic route.

  49. August 1976 Buc Says:

JTS just has never played that well, nowhere near why he was drafted.

JTS is a classic case of….. Looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane.

At least there has not been off the field stuff, that is about the best thing you can say.

He will be on another team after this next season.

  50. Onetrickpony Says:

    JTS has pictures

  51. Canabuc Says:

Trust me I am no real defender of JTS. I think he has underperformed. One thing I think we all seem to forget is that covid did strange things.
One it affected a lot of playing time for these players and if I remember correctly he did not have a full final year season. He also didn’t really have a training camp in his first season.
I also think it affected the ability of teams to evaluate players before the draft as there was no real combine and visits and the usual type of things where there would be a lot of tape for evaluation.

I also think that toddlers system is on the complex side and I really don’t think that JTS ever quite grasped his multiple roles in it. He might have been better if he was just used as a rotational edge rusher without having to worry about dropping into coverage and playing the run…

In any case I think he will be better this year as there are more quality pieces around him which may mean that he might have more free runs at the quarterback which last year if we’re honest until Diaby came into his own there was no one really that the defense had to worry about coming off the edge.
