GM Admits Derek Carr Is No Baker Mayfield

May 10th, 2024

The men and women drawing a regular check from Team Glazer are quick to name one huge reason why they’re impressed by Baker Mayfield.

Bucs fans have heard it repeatedly. Mayfield stepped in last season and was a seasoned leader from Day 1, ignoring the pressure of replacing The Goat and acting respectfully of the phony quarterback competition while still interacting as the roster commander-in-chief with defensive players and offensive teammates.

What a contrast that is when you hear the words of Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, who was making leadership excuses for his veteran quarterback, Derek Carr, who arrived in New Orleans as a 10-year veteran at the same time Mayfield landed in Tampa.

“Look, you know, it’s hard to take that leadership role, you know, when you first come into the building — no matter how good you are, no matter what position you have,” Loomis told SiriusXM NFL Radio this week. “And so, now a year in, [Carr is] going to feel more comfortable about the leadership you need from the quarterback and we’re expecting great things.”

So Mayfield taking over for Tom Brady hits the ground running on Day 1.

Carr? He couldn’t command his team despite grabbing the reins from washed out Andy Dalton (14 starts in 2022). And Carr had a fat contract; Mayfield barely had Team Glazer lunch money.

Joe hopes slimy Saints fans enjoy their old and sorry team, though they do have enough talent to be very dangerous in the NFC South.

  1. Beeej Says:

Every year they go another 10 or 15 million in the hole, kind of like the US government on a smaller scale

  2. Citrus County Says:

Could it be that Mickey Loomis sees the same similarities and attributes in Baker Mayfield as those of his former QB Drew Brees ?

  3. BakerFan Says:

bet there are the Baker Haters on this site that would prefer Carr even with his big fat paycheck….. you just can’t fix stupid.

  4. realistic-optimistic Says:

———– GS, Rec, Cmp%, Yds, TDs, INTs, Y/A, QBRat, QBR
    ——Carr 17, 9-8, 68.4, 3878, 25, 8, 7.1, 97.7, 56.5
    –Mayfield 17, 9-8, 64.3, 4044, 28, 10, 7.1, 94.6, 54.3

They had essentially the same stats last year aside from their salaries. Now we also have an overpaid QB. Great success.

  5. gbobucsfan Says:

Despise the Aint’s…Can’t wait for them to be the dumpster fire of the NFCS again.

  6. Truth be Told Says:

Said it from the start how lucky Baker and the Bucs were to have things line up like they have. Let’s get Baked!

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

It doesn’t take a Vince Lombardi to see Mayfield blows doors on Carr. We have a better overall team than the Slimy Saints. We just have to dominate the gimpy Cousins to be division champs a forth consecutive time. Tell me Joe(s). Who do you think we will play in the Wild Card round?

  8. Fred McNeil Says:

Truth be told, id love to get baked. Go Baker!

  9. D-Rok Says:

In my best Kevin Hart voice, “F them Saints!” LOL

  10. Big Red Says:

@realistic-optimist you nailed it. Been saying it for a year now what would happen if Mayfield played “well enough”. We’d up vastly over paying for a mediocre to above avg NFL QB. I’d rather have overpaid for Carlton and Shaq this season then overpay Mayfield long term.

@Fred McNeil – I’m a diehard Bucs fan who hates the Saints with a passion but it’s not true. Saints beat our asses last time we played. We literally had the same record by the end of the year. Carr is good. He’s not great. Not elite. Not worth 30 plus mil

Tampa fans be warned. Last season we won a total of 3 games vs teams with winning records. 1 of those was against the eagles who were basically on a 5 to 7 game skid by then.

  11. Citrus County Says:

The media never gave Brees his due. He is a first ballot hall of fame candidate. He was overshadowed by Brady, Manning and others. He was in the NFC South. He only got some “flowers” occasionally because the media needed to keep reminding everyone of hurricane Katrina. Even after winning a super bowl MVP it is my contention that Brady, P. Manning, Favre, Roethlisberger, McNabb always were the favored ones just because of their teams and cities. Even Michael Vick’s short time in ATL was favored over Brees and after Vick’s prison term and signing by the Eagles the apologists swooned over him because he was in Philly. I’m not saying this a NO fan. I’m just saying that if circumstances allow for Baker Mayfield to at least partially replicate Brees career the media bias will apply to him as well. So, to Baker I say this; WIN BABY WIN and get Tampa out of witness protection ! Shut the smug media up and rub it in their face!

  12. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The main difference between the two QBs is that Mayfield had Evans. Simple as that. Other than that, someone up there showed the stats, they were remarkably similar.

  13. Mav Says:

People keep talking about how bad the Eagles were playing. The last 2 games before the playoffs the Bucs played very badly. Stop with these excuses.

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F the Ain’ts

  15. Pryda…sec147 Says:

The longer they keep Dennis Allen in charge the longer it’s going to take for the aints to rebuild

  16. Winny Testaverde Says:

Used Carr is the perfect QB for a divisional opponent. Expensive…just good enough to get his Saints beat when it counts…rah rah guy who falls flat/short.

Peak Devin White drilling him into Chucky during the 2020 season of glory is one of my favorite highlights of the last decade.

  17. WiseCrack Says:

To be fair to Carr. He was getting paid like a Drew Gezzz replacement. Unlike Baker where the pressure was relatively low mostly because of his salary.

  18. Citrus County Says:

Ole Chucky just might be getting set up in NO. What a perfect place for him to fade away into oblivion. If Chucky has any sense (and I’m not sure he does) he’ll douse his ego and desire for revenge and avoid the embarrassment he would endure. That might work well for the Bucs however as it would make us look very good and set up a good guy/ bad guy rivalry and take some attention away from ATL and Carolina.

  19. WiscoJoe Says:

Baker was 7th in touchdown passes, 9th in yards, and threw less picks than Mahomes and people are hating on him?

You really can’t fix stupid. He’s worth every penny.

  20. Student of the Game Says:

Naysayers conveniently forget Bucs had no running game and everyone in the stadium knew 2nd and 3rd down they were passing, looking a 1 guy first. So Mayfield got his yards against a passing defense.
Big Red, the Bucs also blew last possession leads against winning teams 3-4 times that we expected not to happen in 2024.

  21. Doc Says:

I dunno. Lots of career stats where Carr and Mayfield are close; some stats where Carr is better.

  22. D Cone Says:

Carr had 9 fewer yards/game, 3 fewer TD’s and 2 fewer INT’s. Oh my God Mayfield embarrassed him. Although giving your sh*t away just to have a job is pretty embarrassing too.

Joe hopes slimy Saints fans enjoy their old and sorry team, though they do have enough talent to be very dangerous in the NFC South.

With limited spending they bettered their pass rush, secondary, receiving room and O Line.

Didn’t the Saints have the same record as the Bucs last season and put up more points? Would think the Bucs should be very aware of the Saints and put them on the tougher side of the board and not the ‘easy win side”

  23. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield is better than Carr and it doesn’t matter what year you go back on Carr Baker is better. Carr was just loved by the national media and that’s why he keeps getting chances. The Saints ain’t winning nothing with Carr as their quarterback. I was happy when they sniged him!!

  24. Drunkinybor Says:

Translation…Derek is a unique butterfly with a unique complex personality. It’s hard for some guys to get along with a dude that different everyday. But after a year of seeing his sad days and his special feeling days and sissy fits as well as being a bitxx. The guys will be used to it. Making him instantly a better leader this season.

  25. Just Saying Says:

I think it has to be harder to win over a locker room making $150M vs $4M. Status in the nfl is all about how much money you make

  26. Bucs Guy Says:

Glad we got Baker instead of Carr for so many reasons.

  27. Gipper Says:

Quit running down NFL QB’s. It is extremely difficult for any QB to be a consistent starter on a NFL team. Will prove the point again with all the 1st round 2024 NFL QB draft picks. Really talking about maybe 12-15 guys who end up as consistent starters in the NFL. Carr is an effective NFL starter and so is Mayfield. Can’t hold these guys to the Tom Brady standard. Mayfield is going to have a long and productive career. His first 6 years compare favorably to Drew Brees first six years. No amount of criticism from the Baker Hate Brigade is going to change that. Mayfield plays another 8-10 years and will build an impressive long term record for both himself and Bucs.

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Please stop making excuses for these quarterbacks the rules made it easier for them to succeed in the NFL now days . If they would have said Jamies or Justin Fields you wouldn’t saying what you are saying about Carr and Baker Mayfield so stop acting like you care about these quarterbacks. Lol 🤣🤣 and you can see the difference between Carr and Fields and Jamies lol 🤣🤣.

  29. Lokog Says:

Derek is a carr they suck meatballs

  30. Doc Says:

I dunno. Their career stats are close. Overall – passer rating – Carr is better.

    Carr

    Y/A 7.1
    TD% 4.4
    INT% 1.9

    Mayfield
    W-L .465
    COMP% 61.9
    Y/A 7.2
    TD% 4.6
    INT% 2.6
    RATE 88.1

  31. Let em Bake Says:

How many playoff wins does Carr have?

  32. heyjude Says:

So happy we did not get Carr and we have Baker.

  33. MRRR Says:

Baker will do whatever it takes to win. Carr will not. That’s why we were one game away from the NFC championship and the Aints were watching.

  34. Marky Mark Says:

Onielbuc you finally made a good point. Carr gets the benefit of the doubt all the time but cant back it up. The Raiders wasted years on this fake QB. I hope the national media keeps dissing Baker because clearly proving everyone wrong motivates him. I would like to see the rematch with Mahomes so Baker can prove Texas Tech wrong for chasing him out the door to Oklahoma. Baker was a lousy no call away from beating Mahomes in the playoffs in 2021.

  35. Gipper Says:

    Oneilbuc,

Not making excuses for any quarterbacks. Just making the obvious point that landing and remaining in a starting QB role in the NFL is extremely difficult. Just think off all the college QB’s who will never get the opportunity to play in the NFL. Many who get the opportunity don’t do much with it. That leaves us with about 12-15 guys who stay in the league and have nice long term careers. Derek Carr is one of those.

  36. Doc Says:

Let em Bake Says: “How many playoff wins does Carr have?”

    0. But he has only 1 playoff loss.

Baker has 2 playoff losses. The loss last year was 100% on his INT.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Some times it’s about who you know in these professionals sports. Remember his brother was the first pick in the draft as well. But to me Baker Mayfield is better than Carr . I get what you saying though bro but some guys gets more chances to fail than others and that’s the part I hate about the NFL. The media makes excuses for some guys and you can see a player that’s in the same situation or worse and they will say he’s the reason why the team is losing. A lot of people on here thinks I’m such a Jamies fan and I’m not I’m not a fan of none of these players like that especially in today’s football. That’s why I can criticize any player regardless who they are. The only football fan I’m am is my son. And all my favorite NFL players played in the 80 s and 90s . When I bring up Jamies the thing I be talking about is no one cared about the running game until Brady came here. My point is if you going to give guys excuses I’m ok with that if it’s a legitimate reason why they are struggling. But you can’t give to one guy and not the other guy.

  38. JK Says:

“Doc” wins stupidest comment on this thread, by a landslide!

  39. Bobby Says:

Trying to lead the Saints must be difficult period. With poor character players like dirtbag Cam Jordan and d-bag Marshon Lattimore. Saints need these players to move on from there locker room. Till then it’s going to be the Same dirty Saints team that goes out of its way to deliberately injure our Buccaneers. Lets not forget the Saints dirty play is the reason Chris Godwin tore his ACL-MCL years ago. That tackle they made on him absolutely was dirty.

  40. Oneilbuc Says:

    Bobby. It’s call football bro!!!

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

None of those hits were dirty I mean how soft do you guys want the game to get??

  42. Doc Says:

JK Says: “Doc wins stupidest comment on this thread.”

Why, of course. I compared 6 career stats for both Carr and Mayfield showing them to be comparable quarterbacks; you couldn’t refute any of the 6 stats for either quarterback; so, after crying to your mommy, you logged in to call me “stupid”? LMAO. What a dumbass.

  43. TF Says:

Ummm making an argument EITHER way about who is better “Mayfield or Carr” is like debating which is better a Toyota Corolla or Hyundai Elantra. Get grip people.
