CBS Ranks Baker Mayfield As Subpar Quarterback

May 8th, 2024

Looking up at slugs.

Joe guesses a Pro Bowl MVP must not carry the street cred it once did.

Joe thinks it will take the Bucs making deep playoff runs the next two seasons for folks to begin to take Baker Mayfield seriously.

For some reason, #NFLMedia largely has little to no respect for Mayfield. They scoff at him having a career year (?) with the Bucs and guiding the team to within a couple of plays of the NFC title game.

But, consider the source. Cody Benjamin of CBS thinks the Bucs won last year with smoke and mirrors. How can a team without Tom Brady ever be good? He gave Mayfield zero props.

And Benjamin is on record typing Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht did little to nothing this offseason to make the Bucs better. No, re-signing star free agents and having a nice little draft means nothing to Benjamin when you can otherwise sign a 36 year old quarterback with a bum Achilles for nine figures.

(Yes, Benjamin is one of many riding the Dixie Chicks bandwagon, hyping a quarterback Atlanta thought so much of they drafted a quarterback in the first round.)

In ranking all NFL quarterbacks, Benjamin has Mayfield at No. 20 with a few back-handed compliments using charged words.

The journeyman did a lot to boost his stock in 2023, which was not often pretty, but still made Tampa Bay a tough, scrappy out. Is he due for regression on a team with largely the same lineup? Perhaps. But he might still be enough to keep this club hanging in the wild-card race.

Joe doesn’t dismiss the fact that Mayfield could regress. He set a career-high for passing yards and touchdowns thrown, though he had one extra regular season game than his prior best seasons. Even a small step back is regression. It’s simple math. Doesn’t mean it will happen but it’s certainly possible.

Benjamin actually has Russell Wilson ranked higher. That’s disgraceful. Wilson is cooked, man. (Yeah, Joe knows Wilson threw only two fewer TDs than Mayfield last season in two fewer games.) Other signal-callers Benjamin thinks are better than Mayfield include Geno Smith, Deshaun Watson and Cousins (of course).

At least Benjamin had enough common sense to rank Anthony Richardson and the rookie quarterbacks below Mayfield. Joe actually expected otherwise.

  1. SC Bucs fan Says:

Why people give a hoot about talking head ratings boggles my mind

  2. Tucker Says:

Just something to talk about I guess. Most talking heads just glance at the entire NFL and have these click bait hot takes that are just plain terrible most of the time.

  3. Bucben61 Says:

Due yourself a solid and Google an image of Cody Benjamin
Mayfield must have took his milk money back in the 1st grade

  4. Esteban85 Says:

I love it when we prove these know nothing out of touch media mongrels wrong. Keep saying Baker ain’t the one and he will keep fighting like the dawg he is. Besides, who give a fat shît what this clown thinks. He’s never played in the league so he knows nothing. Nothing!

  5. Esteban85 Says:

Yeah he looks like a major douchebäg

  6. James Willie Says:

Keep the insults coming. This team feeds off the doubters.

  7. What it is Says:

Let them talk, it’s what they are good at in life, obviously. Getting it right is a whole other matter.Talking never did anything anyway. Besides, Baker loves it when people talk negative about him, it motivates him. Remember when they ALL were saying he would NEVER start in the NFL again. Then oops 2023 happened and ohhh how they were all acting like they didnt say what they said🥵 Like we dont have a memory system that works. This year ol’ Bake will be better than he was last year regardless of them “talking”. It will be time to eat crow again. Cannot wait.

  8. Britton Tafelski Says:

Not sure why this is considered a hot take. He was by and large a subpar quarterback who played in the worst division and our team backed into the playoffs. People keep acting like he revived a dead franchise and was the sole reason they made the playoffs. Once in the playoffs it’s a new season and Baker was at his best in those two games. However during the regular season there were large stretches of not good play and stats were inflated in the final 4 min of the games when the other team is in prevent defense.
I anticipate him being better this year out of the gate than he was last now that he has a year under his belt and a healthy Chris Godwin who I believe was still recovering from acl.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

    Mediocre QB.

  10. Bobby Says:

Baker should hang that comment by Cody B on his fridge, put it as your phone screensaver Baker, use it to motivate yourself. Make these media personal look even worse than there opinions already make them look.

  11. WiscoJoe Says:

Every year Mayfield had a full healthy offseason with the one team he put up really good numbers. These reporters do little no research and it’s bad.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

That would be because in a career year, he was #18th in QBR, and among the QBs who started all 17 games, he was last in yards and last in scoring.

He’ll need to step up this season if he wants to see the 2nd year of that new deal – and if he doesn’t, he’ll be gone as well as Bowles and everyone else.

Hopefully he can do it – he did do better than expected last year since he was projected to be bad, and ended up being middling.

  13. destinjohnny Says:

once we get this guy even an average line he will shine.
Jason just has to draft better man.
Cody? Hainsey? Luke????? all below average

  14. HC Grover Says:

30 million is not sub par…..

  15. KiDxCuRRy Says:

Our OLine will be much improved. If we can get a middle of the pack running game. We wil be just fine.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    Sub-par? – No.

    Par? – Yes.

If the Bucs are able to improve their IOL I will be interested to see if Baker can continue to improve.

Most QBs don’t play very well when they are getting constant pressure through the middle of the O-line…

  17. HC Grover Says:

He is a par QB on a Par team with Par coaches. 50/50

  18. Saskbucs Says:

Cody Benjamin is a Saints fan or something. His opinion is worthless. Rod Munch, that can’t possibly be true! Last in yards at over 4000 with 28 TDs on a new team with no run game. Barring injury, I don’t think we see much regression if any. We saw exactly who and what Baker Mayfield is last season. He should be better this year, more comfortable with his surroundings and paycheck. Could work against a guy but Baker doesn’t strike me as the type. He wants to be better for his teammates now that he is paid, not let them down by slacking off. 4000 and 30 incoming.

  19. BucsfanBrennan Says:

Splish splash, his opinion is trash.

  20. Larrd Says:

Sports journalists want to lie and ridicule and scapegoat to be like the real journalists they look up to so much.

  21. All_da_way Says:

    Man this is great.

Bucs flying under the radar again this season.

But my gut says the Bucs will sign another pass rusher when the cuts happen as the season nears. Just a feeling because for a 17 game season you need to load up on pass rushers. Bucs depth is a big question mark here?

  22. Lord Cornelius Says:

    lmao what a list

  23. Dewey Selmon Says:

There’s only 1 QB in NFL history to follow Tom Brady and make the playoffs, And he had a better record than him.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

If being “subpar” has the Bucs winning the division and winning a playoff game after the Rod Munchers of the world said they’d win 5 games, I’ll take it.

  25. JimBobBuc Says:

This guy wrote a 2023 ranking “2023 NFL QB Power Rankings…” Last year he had Baker at #30 behind such superstars as Kenny Pickett and Mac Jones. For his 2023 ranking of Baker, he wrote:

“Mayfield has embraced his journeyman reality, still boasts some moxie and could enjoy a Bucs supporting cast that’s better than what he had with the Panthers and Rams. But his reckless tendencies may not afford him the QB1 job for long.” Wrong, and lazy writing.,

  26. Conner50 Says:

Pro bowls do not matter whatsoever these days even if you make the mvp for it. Second mayfield did struggle a lot last year, he almost came to a point where he could’ve been benched almost. However the team and him included never gave up and finished strong and made some noise in the playoffs. So who cares what these guys think, us true Bucs fans are happy with our roster and expect more this season. I expect Mayfield to be more consistent this year and find a way to get the offense rolling early in games myself. And for baker not to throw the game ending pick in the playoffs this go round lol Go Bucs

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s actually a proper assessment in my opinion. Mayfield did JUST enough to keep the starting role, but no more.

Don’t give me this “Pro Bowl MVP” junk. It means nothing with the way the Pro Bowl is these days. Mayfield won MVP by exercising better than anyone else. Big deal.

Mayfield earned another shot this year, got his contract…but last year was a horrible sampling of his abilities. Be honest people. Losing 6 of 7 games was abysmal.

He seemed to turn a corner in the last few games, and he certainly played a big role in winning the first playoff game…but he also played a big role in losing the second playoff game.

But…to be fair…offensive line play was horrible too, and the team has addressed it this year. No more excuses.

  28. drdneast Says:

Keep it coming I say. Someone in the Bucs organization needs to be in charge of making sure Mayfield sees what all these stupid haters say. Turn the chip on his shoulder into a boulder. He plays better with the extra weight.

  29. drdneast Says:

Cody Benjamine? That schnoze would make the rudder of the Queen Mary jealous.

  30. Boss Says:

    #20 is being generous

  31. Bucblind Says:

Benjamin is one of those boys that said Mayfield would never start again in the NFL. So….

  32. Gerald Says:

A quarterback can’t be subpar when a team has a questionable 0line, no run game to speak of, a 1st time play caller, a defensive head coach, etc. You know what a subpar Quarterback in that situation gets you…………… the # 1 draft pick. Keep Baking Baker! Your the man!

  33. John Cecilia Says:

No matter what Bucs do the national media doesn’t respect them. Yet they love 2 teams the Bucs beat and one in a blowout. Eagles and Packers. Games don’t matter and neither do stats according to most national media.
On career year for Baker, everyone’s stats go up with Evans. Fitzpatrick, Winston, Brady. All went up.

  34. Bucblind Says:

Yes yes since it was flag football the qb doesn’t have to throw the ball accurately. All that goes out the window in flag football. You haters are right again. Baker really didn’t win the throwing contest either. Besides he was competing against 4th graders when he won that contest.

  35. Buchen61 Says:

For Rod Muncher…I copied this from Reddit

QBR is a dumb rating system
Perfect example of why QBR is stupid. Zach wilson had the highest QBR of any qb this week. He threw for 14/22 102yds w/ 1 TD and ran 4 times for 91 and a td. Burrow got 2nd with a literally (actually literally not literally like most people use it meaning figuratively) historic passing day of 37/46 for 525 and 4 TDs. Neither guy had any picks.

Zach wilson 92.4. Joe burrow 89.3.

The single highest QBR rated game of all time (only saw back to 2006 on the list and I’m technically “working” so I can’t put a lot of effort in looking it up so maybe not “all time”) per their website was a Carson Palmer game in 2009. Carson went 20/24 with 233 yds and 5TDs 0 ints. QBR 99.8 Don’t get me wrong that’s a great game but that’s the GREATEST QB GAME OF ALL TIME? (Or at least since 2006)

QBR is an extremely stupid metric and I refuse to ever use it. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk

  36. SlyPirate Says:

    A) YOU’RE ON AN ISLAND
Reality check: Baker hasn’t had a very good career. He’s been cut or not resigned from half the teams in the NFL. He’s had two good seasons. He’s had injuries. He’s a little goofball. People know his history. Bucs are on an island. If Baker has another good year, he’ll start changing the narrative but not after a potential fluke season.

    B) BEST THING EVER!!!!
The more negative articles about the Bucs THE BETTER!!! We know that Licht and the team pays attention and they take it personally. “Us against the world,” is the best recipe for success for this crew.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Buchen61 – Zack Wilson was literally the 2nd worst QB in QBR in 2021-2022 – only behind Baker Mayfield.

  38. Defense Rules Says:

Seem to be seeing more & more (and more) of these ‘The national media doesn’t know their arse from a hole in the ground when it comes to the Bucs’ on JoeBucsFan. I know that this is an incredibly slow time of year (as far as football news goes), but still I’m not sure what the purpose is Joe.

‘Us against the world’? That’s a given in every game we play. ‘That the Bucs are the Rodney Dangerfields of the NFL’? Respect is earned. The Bucs have worked hard IMO just to break even over the last 2 seasons, but we go into most games as either break-even or as underdogs. Who cares what the odds-makers say BEFORE the game? Put up more points than your opponent and they’ll shut up quick enough.

  39. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Cody’s a twink who’s never put a football helmet on in a pee wee game so why care what some puss n boots says

  40. infomeplease Says:

Ok, so when I here the word “par”, living in Florida, I immediately think of golf! If you’re sub par in golf, that’s a really good thing!! Just saying!!

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Baker was not a good QB last year.

    20th in offensive scoring
    7th in defense scoring

The defense is why the Bucs made the playoffs (and the fact they play in the worst division in football), not Baker, who literally did everything possible to lose the Bucs their home game in the playoffs when he completely choked the last two games of the season when everything was on the line.

Then, when everything was literally on the line in Detroit, with 2 mins left, he goes out and immediately throws an INT.

The guy, in a career year, is a middling QB – and he chokes in big situations.

The cult around this zilch is amazing.

Hopefully he can improve, but when your best is 18th in QBR and 20th in scoring, and you’re last in yards and scoring amongst all starters who played the full season – it means you’re, at best, middling – and that’s being generous.

With that said, he did have two excellent games vs the Packers and Jags, and then followed it up with his two worst games of the season.

  42. Brian in St Pete Says:

So with 32 teams, par would be somewhere between 16th and 17th best. Who in his right might wouldn’t rank Baker in the top 16? Nobody is calling him top 5 or anything, maybe not even top 10…but come on. It’s just silly not to rank him as a top 16 qb.

  43. D Cone Says:

Joe could be crowned Mr. Universe if everyone else decided not to attend.

  44. DBS Says:

Mr. stupid is back. Baker did not lose 6 of 7 games by himself. One player does not lose games all those games. It is a team game. Fingers can be pointed at many during that streak including coaches. So get off the Baker lost all those games.

  45. Todd Says:

    Receipts!!!

  46. Buchen61 Says:

Didn’t the talking heads talk Jared Goff right out of L.A…..wasnt the narrative he wasn’t very good, a game manager at best. Seems I vaguely remember that.

  47. Buchen61 Says:

Rod Munch there isn’t a word in the English language that can convey my utter disdain for you.

  48. realistic-optimistic Says:

@Rod, rewatch that JAX game again. It’s true, Baker had a few good throws, but the Jags defense dropped 4 easy INTs in that game. And, our defense was smothering for 3 qtrs.

The Bucs won and lost every game on the back of their defense. There were zero games where our defense played poorly and the offense carried us to victory. I only saw 2 games where both offense and defense played well (GB, PHI2).

  53. heyjude Says:

Who is Cody Benjamin… Just another guy throwing crap out of his head. Another season when the sports media can have egg on their face due to their bandwagon obsession with only certain teams and players. The Bucs will show them in the end. Go Bucs 🏈

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You all may not like it…but Rod Munch made some valid points. I would not say things the way he says them, but his points are mostly accurate.

I know it is the time of year that fans get fired up. They try to see only the potentially good things and quote them as reality. But I’m more of a tell it like it is guy…and though I do not always agree with Rod Munch, on this he is very accurate.

And if you are going to say Mayfield did not lose 6 or 7 on his own…then you must also say he did not win on his own. It works both ways.

But in the second playoff game? He caused the loss.

  55. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

This Benjamin character is another in a long line of comedians looking to garner some attention😂

  56. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

The reason the media thinks so low of Mayfield, just look at that picture of him.

Does that look like a tough football player?

    No.

He looks like a wounded puppy dog, in a pound, hoping you pick him.

  57. DBS Says:

Bonzi are you that dumb? It is a team game . Baker lost the Lions game? A missed FG. Dean drops an pick and the Lions score. Dean goes down and the what happens ? What were the odds (yes he threw the pick) they were going to drive down field and score the needed points? But please continue to blame the loss all on Mayfield.

  58. Jeagan1999 Says:

Baker is a top 5 QB in 2024!

    Bank on it!

  59. All_da_way Says:

Mayfield did better than expected with a questionable interior OL, no run game and defense that struggled to finish out opponents.

Mayfield did struggle to be consistent and move the chains but I think he will thrive in this system with 3 WRs on the field in most plays because the slot WR can quickly attack the seem and force defenses to back off a bit and not sit routes.

In a weak division Baker is in a really good spot with a good team around him. Everything. Is Predicated on the Oline and Baker this year

  62. Buc4evr Says:

Cody Benjamin is a Viking fan…. lol. Nothing more to say.

  63. IrishTony Says:

    I’m confident in this team and when I’m confident in a Buc team look out! It’s only happened a few times in my life since 76. 1979, 1980, 1981, 1997, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 2020,2021, 2024!

  64. What it is Says:

Look at Munch quoting stats about Baker like he didn’t fracture his shoulder and completely tear his labrum and STILL PLAYED over half the season on them both in 2021-2022. The truth is Baker is too tough for his own good. And Rod Munch has NO class whatsoever, none. He lives on half-truths.

  65. IrishTony Says:

As you can see I was never confident when Winston was QB.

  66. What it is Says:

    You know it 1999

  67. Trask To The Future Says:

    Baker IS highly overrated.

Anyone that actually watched all of our games last season knows this. How many games did he struggle to throw for 100 yards passing in the first half with the game on the line? He racked up so many of his season yards when we were already down multiple scores.

Aside from the Green Bay game he really didn’t look all that solid for most of the season. Our wins came against bad teams. Even our playoff win was against a team that was falling fast.

  68. Larrd Says:

Baker acts too masculine for some Bucs fans. The lady fans love him but it’s threatening to the QBR guys and other beta types.

Maybe when they see him with the baby, they’ll feel safer and come around, lol.

  69. What it is Says:

You people yapping about how Baker lost the Lions game. It never ends you are truly ridiculous and are the living opposite of self awareness. I guess your memory systems don’t work too good either. I’ll refresh your memory. It was about a month before Baker was brought on with Tampa Bay. Everyone was saying Tampa will win 4 games, including bloggers here, it’s going to be an off year you said. Then Baker and only Baker came on the team. They still said 4 games. Well the guy that would never start in an NFL game again not only started but took his new team to the divisional round. Just like he did with the mistake on the lake. First playoff road win in 51 years. Fast forward a bit-Oh but he threw that interception. He’s the reason you were there. That interception albeit frustrating, was miniscule compared to the season Baker along with his teammates gave us. That was such a much better season than 4 wins. And to complain about one play by the guy that got you there just like he did Cleveland. Baker is the bomb and you people that know nothing about footbal Rod, James should stop embarrassing yourselves. But you won’t, this site gives you the attention you are missing in life. Both the good and the bad. Particularly the bad. Sad

  72. White Tiger Says:

Until proven otherwise, consistently, Mayfield is a mid-tier QB. His stats show it.

Thats still much better than many of our competitors that didn’t make it two games… he’s a fit for what we had left, he showed guts, and (still) a nice arm. We still had enough left of our roster and he was abke to gig that remnant into figuring it out and winning more than we lost, when we weren’t expected to win 6 games.

Now we’ve got new life, and maybe a QB with enough juice to push us a little closer to a window that’s closing. What’s better, instead of blowing the team up & starting over…we added pieces and may just be becoming a team no one expected…and apparently many don’t want…

Can’t wait to see this all play out on the field…where the media isn’t good enough to follow.

  73. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I did NOT say I think he looks like……

No wonder Joe goes ballistic over fans that don’t read properly or can comprehend a simple sentence.

  75. What it is Says:

You know it 1999. And Kyle Trask all 6′ 5″ of him is still sittin.

  76. Bucblind Says:

White tiger, you are one of the ones that don’t know come here from sickum. His stats are the result of a broken shoulder, torn labrum and 5 years of the worst teams the league has to offer. But that is too much figuring for you Trask fans. How’s this- a qb is judged by how he elevates his team. Cleveland 0-16 the year before Baker and 4-44 3 years before Baker to an 11-5 team to the first playoff road win in FIFTY-ONE (51) years!!! Yeah now that is a QUATERBACK. then he was seriously injured due to a terrible OL and still played not worrying about his stats. Yall shoul go to a basketball site. I hear Kansas has a really good one. Football is too complicated for your obvious simple minds. Not to mention he has the best passer rating 106.3 in playoff Bucs history. Ohhhhh he threw an interception.😂

  77. Bucblind Says:

Ohhhhhhh Shoooooot!!!!!That sound you haters WILL make when Baker comes into his own this year from having a good OC and head coach that knows talent. That sound when we remind you of all the BS you all spouted over and over and over again, wasting everyone’s time. 4-44 & a 19 game losing streak to 11-5 and first playoff road game win in 51 years, that’s all that matters–ELEVATION of a team. All the rest of your gibberish is just that, gibberish.

  78. What it is Says:

Patrick Mahomes who has been in an almost perfect situation from the beginning of his professional career had a passer rating of 92.6 last year and won a superbowl with that rating.
Baker Mayfield who has been in the exact opposite of Mahomes since his professional career began and the first year he was on a decent team with a good HC and OC he had a 94.6. Mmm how’s that for a Stat boys?
Not to mention he again elevated another team from an expected 4 game winning season to playing in the divisional game. He IS an Elevator no doubt.

  79. What it is Says:

    Bucblind has it right elevation

  80. David Says:

Better Oline, more WR depth, potentially better RBs, a better OC who passes better…. I think he improves yards and TDs.

  81. White Tiger Says:

Baker is our best bet to “win now”, choosing not to believe the stats, doesn’t help your argument.

Some of you don’t read, some don’t comprehend… I love Baker. Whether those stats are results of having to adjust because the interior line collapses (evident from the lack of a running game in the early games), or not… the stats are what the media types are looking at.

My guess is, we’ll see a better version of Baker this year, because the interior o-line has improved, we have more options at RB and Godwin is back in the slot, and maybe a move tight end that can stay on the field during running plays.

At some point this season, media types may start talking about how well Baker moves this team…

  82. Bucblind Says:

White Tiger, you sound like a logical, thoughtful person. I probably jumped too far too fast, I apologize. I can respect a thoughtful person’s opinion even if it differs from mine. Go Bucs

  83. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

It’s so funny to see people get worked up by all these comparison lists.
They’re just a bunch of clickbait.
To more outrageous you make it, the more people will click on it and comment.
    Y’all getting played.

The Bucs won and lost every game on the back of their defense.

    ————-

Yeah, it’s not unfair to point that out – and I should clarify, he had an excellent first half of the Jags game. But in fairness to Baker, Bowles did what he always does, and went into a shell and shutdown the offense, meaning they had a bunch of 3rd and longs since Bowles was trying to run out the clock with 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

But man, in those last two games of the year, Baker did everything possible to cost the Bucs that last playoff spot. Then he completely collapsed vs the Lions. The fact people pretend that never happened, when all the pressure is was on, and still somehow claim Baker is clutch is ridiculous. He’s anything but clutch.

  85. What it is Says:

Yeah he “elevated” the team so poorly the powers that be agreed to pay the loser $100 million🤑 He owns the Bucs playoff record for passer rating of 106.3. I think that’s clutch.

  86. Marky Mark Says:

    Thanks CBS for motivating baker.

  87. Shane Callahan Says:

Love it! Keep dissing Baker because even though he doesn’t deserve any of it, he completely thrives on it.
