Bucco Bruce Arians Told Lavonte David Immediately After 2019 Season Bucs “Might” Bring In Tom Brady

May 4th, 2024

Tipped off about Tom Brady.

Man, if this is the new Lavonte David, Joe hopes he makes many more TV appearances.

Joe always finds it way cool to find out when pistons began pumping for a transaction. For example, Joe was told years ago by a solid source that in October 2013, Team Glazer and lousy Lovie Smith were already in talks to bring in Smith as the next Bucs coach.

Of course, then-incumbent Bucs coach Greg Schiano wasn’t fired until after the regular season, some two months later.

Transactions, especially involving heavy hitters, rarely unfold neatly within a couple of days, in less time than it takes to purchase a house. Sometimes this blurs tampering lines. Honestly, tampering is rarely enforced.

Now the general public was told that during a Bucs’ suite-holders function in January of 2020, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht whispered to Arians that there may be a chance the Bucs could land Tom Brady as a free agent.

Well, David pushed the timeline up a few weeks.

Rarely does David appear on TV like he did on Friday. The linebacking icon of the Bucs is a shy and chill dude. He’s done Total Access a couple of times on NFL Network and he sat down for in-depth YouTube shows after the Super Bowl. But for him to do a radio spot is a lot. And for him to make his lone sighting at Radio Row at a Super Bowl was, for him, a superhuman feat. But an in-studio TV appearance???

David is in Los Angeles for Tom Brady’s roast on Sunday and since he was in town he stopped in as a guest on “The Rich Eisen Show.” It may have been David’s best media appearance, probably because he was in-house and so relaxed.

Eisen wanted to know when David first heard Brady was coming to the Bucs. Per David, Arians told him in their season-ending exit interview, which usually takes place the day after the final loss of the season, that the Bucs were going to go after Brady.

“I just remember in the exit meeting, talking to Coach BA [Arians],” David detailed. “You know, you have a one-on-one with the head coach. I just remember him saying, ‘If we don’t get Jameis [Winston] back, we are going to get someone in here for you to get us over the hump … get us to the Super Bowl.

“And he literally said this, ‘And it might be The GOAT.'”

David was incredulous with Arians’ declaration and he said he thought for sure he misunderstood Arians.

“I’m like, ‘What do you mean, it might be The GOAT?’ And he’s like, ‘It might be 12.'”

David said he scoffed at Arians and thought Arians had tried to sell him swampland in Arizona. David didn’t think any more of it.

That was, until the days leading up to Brady signing with the Bucs. David said he heard rumors but still thought it was far-fetched.

David said he learned of the signing as he was laying prone on the couch watching TV reading a sports scrawl that Brady was to sign with the Bucs.

David said he immediately sat straight up and yelled out loud, “WHAT?!”

So this goes back to the timeline when the Bucs decided to go after Brady. It was certainly on Arians’ mind when Brady and the Patriots were in postseason play.

So why would Arians tell David this unless it was more than a passing whim of fancy in Arians’ imagination? That’s because Arians and someone (some people?) with or connected to the Bucs (and maybe Brady’s camp, too) had very likely already put the wheels in motion to lure Brady out of New England.

Fascinating story from the beloved Bucs veteran!

  1. Crickett Baker Says:

Finally, we get some specific info on what was said in Tom’s “famous” speech before the Super Bowl. Wow.

  2. MadMax Says:

How do i search for my posts from october or november in 2019 when I was calling for us to go after Brady because I could just tell….he was ready to leave and I heard they were trying to get him on the cheap again.

I type my name in search and it doesnt work….

  3. Ed McSherry Says:

I saw it. It was a good interview, and the “Brady Roast” looks like looks like it’ll be good, too, with a lot players.

  4. Stanglassman Says:

    Madmax Google:
madmax says joe bucs fan brady 2019 october

    Then try it with October.

Someone else may have a better way. You can usually find it if you look through enough pages.

  5. heyjude Says:

Wow, I cannot imagine how all the players felt when they heard the goat was coming to town! We were all really excited, but actually getting to play on the same team as Brady had to be thrilling. The Tom Brady experience was awesome for we Buc fans. Can’t wait to see the roast.

  6. MadMax Says:

Thanks Stan…didnt think about a google search….havent found it yet but about to hit the sack.

  7. heyjude Says:

@MadMax – Possibly Joe has an archive within the blog that can be accessed?

  8. Permanently Moderated Says:

When it was being talked about, I poo pooed it as being pie in the sky thinking. Of course, the rest is NFL history.

  9. Todd Says:

Love that he called out Devon White as one who could not handle being roasted.

Shocker! A joke that carries some semblance of truth would likely violate his sensitivities.

    Enjoy the drama, Philly!

  10. Irish Laughter Says:

As transparent as can be. Thank you Lavonte. The Brady haters (Joe) can learn a lesson from this interview. You never know what you got until its gone. I still think with the right coaching at the time, the Bucs could have won a few more Super Bowls. Maybe Baker can pull it off. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

LVD belongs in the HOF and I’m glad he’s getting out there with the media. I hope the local media and the Bucs PR group promote LVD heavily to get recognition for his play.

When LVD missed a couple games last year, the Bucs were in bad shape. I didn’t see anyone rise up to the occasion, go watch the games.

  12. SB~LV Says:

Put his name in the ROH for the first home game this year!
They can have the official ceremony after he retires!
He is that meaningful to the franchise.

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Y’all kill me with the Brady stuff lol 🤣🤣 how many games did Brady come to last season? He’s a Patriot and that’s why he’s been back to New England last year to visit the team. He lives right down the street from Tampa and haven’t been to one game . This is a weak fan base lol 🤣🤣🤣 please stop kissing his butt he ain’t even came back to one game since he left. He didn’t even show up for playoffs to watch the bucs.

  14. Durango 95 Says:

Watched this interview last night and caught what he said about Brady. Immediately thought hmmmm. That remark will end up as grist for the mill on JBF. Can’t deny it does provide a curious timeline.

  15. Joe Says:

That remark will end up as grist for the mill on JBF.

    You know Joe to well.

  16. Permanently Moderated Says:

Oneilbuc, Super Bowl 50 baby. Brady > Jameis. Fact.

  17. lambchop Says:

    @MadMax,

    Google this way:

There should be no space after ‘site:’

  18. I May Be Crazy But Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but neither Bucs Super Bowl teams ever got to visit the Whie House.

  19. admin Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but neither Bucs Super Bowl teams ever got to visit the White House.

Bucs 2020 team was there. So was Joe! Wrote stories from the White House and published photos too. It happened.

  20. MadMax Says:

Thanks lambchop, i found it….and im sure theres more because i kept pushing for us to go after him

Unfortunately the post isnt there anymore when i click on the link…dont know why….but google history shows i made it

“Oct 29, 2019 — MadMax Says: October 29th, 2019 at 4:23 pm … What if Brady had Evans, Godwin, Howard, Brate, and Ronald Jones? … Bucs fans are still mad when we …”

  21. Rod Munch Says:

” ‘If we don’t get Jameis [Winston] back, we are going to get someone in here for you to get us over the hump … get us to the Super Bowl.”

    ———

But wait… I was told the Bucs wanted Teddy Bridgewater.

    LOL!

Talk about all-time fake news. Maybe someone in the building was telling you guys that, but it was clearly false. It was Winston or Brady – and as even Winston said, you can’t be mad at losing your job to the GOAT.

  22. toopanca Says:

So, maybe a Brady surrogate said, “You know, I bet Tom would really love it here. Of course, he would expect to be paid $xx,xxx, xxx.”

Any number of teams may have been told the same thing.

Judging from this article, BA certainly found the prospect exciting enough to share with Lavonte David.

The team may have found it interesting enough to set aside the cap space.

But, it was still a long way from a done deal.

Until he signed on the dotted line, Brady remained free to chose whichever pot he thought was sweetened the most. I suspect that he was hoping that it would be the 49ers.

    But, hurray for our side!!!

  23. Mike C Says:

Haha oneilbuc the ultimate h8ter, you wanted us to keep the turnover machine lololololol your opinion is TRASH!!! HAHAHA

  24. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. That’s the only thing you can say is Jamies lol 🤣🤣 your a joke. Again has Brady been at any Tampa game last season or at least attend the playoff game? Lol 😂 you see I bring Facts you bring trash talk lol 🤣🤣 big difference between facts and trash talk!!

  25. Mike C Says:

Fact, you are still salty because they dumped your boi and you predicted doom and gloom for decades to come and the Bucs then proceeded to win the super bowl, making you look like a clown…. fact.

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

    Mike C
I don’t know Jamies personally so I don’t know how he’s my boy lol 🤣🤣!! You act like you actually know Brady lol 🤣. And yes this team ain’t going to the Superbowl no time soon. And as far as the 2020 know one knew that AB , Gronk and Fournett was coming here. What happened once AB and Gronk left Brady looked like 2019 Brady. His stats were actually the same once AB and Gronk left and that’s a fact. And you celebrating a meadicore season like last year? Lol 🤣🤣 ok you just a meadicore guy I get it !!

  27. Mike C Says:

Blah Blah Blah anyone can go back and see your clown act, you the only REAL buc fan because you didn’t like Brady, got you big dog, you the champ

  28. MadMax Says:

Sushi is so dang good….mix it with some alpo and im in dog heaven…..

  29. MadMax Says:

Put on some ZZ Top “Waitin for the bus/Jesus just left chicago” and Gary Moore’s “Only a fool will never learn” ….put it on loop…..you’re welcome 🙂
