Will Gholston Returns

April 15th, 2024

“Ira, we’ll talk again in June. Stop texting me.”

Interesting timing by the Buccaneers today.
Last year, the Bucs waited until July to come to terms on a one-year deal with defensive lineman Will Gholston to play his 11th season in a Tampa Bay uniform. Now Gholston is back before the 2024 NFL Draft with a new contract, the Bucs announced today.

Does this mean the Bucs formally know they’re passing on a defensive tackle with a premium pick? There are exciting ones likely to be on the board late in Round 1 when the Bucs are scheduled to pick.

With Logan Hall, Calijah Kancey, Vita Vea, Greg Gaines and Mike Greene returning to the interior D-line with Gholston, the Bucs can’t call themselves needy or thin at the position.

Gholston banked over $2.5 million last season, and Joe suspects he re-signed for at least that much.

Joe likes the move for a variety of reasons, including Gholston’s 178 games in a Bucs uniform. He’s a true professional and the kind of a piece a championship team has in its pocket.

Love this signing. Gholston should be a Buc until the wheels fall off.

    Dude is a stout beast

I don’t know how litch gets these guys to stay so loyal but kudos man. I think this kind of paints the picture that we don’t expect to be drafting any DL in this draft. We have our starters and rotational players on board. If Diaby can produce a 10 sack season and JTS does what he’s done and create pressures our line will be fine. Trade up and get Barton or trade down and get JPJ. Baker keep your arrogance at check and be a role model to your child and this can turn into a good season

  9. LouisFriend Says:

He doesn’t move the needle too much since he only took 23% of the defensive snaps last season – but they know what to expect and he’s a great guy for a bottom of the roster position.

  10. SB~LV Says:

    He’s a pros pro !

    BIG Willy!

  18. NCBuc Says:

@ Toad…. That’s actually interesting. He’s a big body at 6’6 283. Kinda like what the Ravens did with big bodies on the outside. Just made me more curious about this draft

  19. FrontFour Says:

    Love this move.

  20. Simeon4HOF Says:

Very solid move … Figured they would do this, and happy they have already. DT is set

  21. View from 132 Says:

Doesn’t mean anything for the draft. He’s old, and lots of D lineman rotate in.

  22. Beeej Says:

You can’t have too many guys like Will

  23. Winny Testaverde Says:

Gholston has outkicked his career expectations/longevity coverage. Good on him…glad he’s back.

And there’s the scene stealing ( a la Gene Hackman ) Irv CoughMan looking dead sexy complete with New Balance “kicks”. One of the best photos in the JBF catalog/library/annals.

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

    Gholston signing makes me happy.

  25. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Gholston is a great ‘character guy’ and a steady performer imo. A team can’t have enough of these guys on their squad imo.

  26. adam from ny Says:

  30. unbelievable Says:

Pretty amazing he’s still playing here. Obviously not the kind of guy who strike fear into opposing coordinators, but he’s always solid and dependable.

After Evans and David, it would be pretty cool for Gholston to be a Buc for life too.
