The MVP

If Baker Mayfield plays great…

Hey, it’s the Sunday before the draft. Joe’s allowed to dream.

But this isn’t about the draft, nor is it about Rachel Watson. No, this is about the Bucs freaking out all the dismissive naysayers and dominating the 2024 season — surprising* the world.

(* — Joe remembers once hearing the late Beano Cook on radio and a caller asked him if “Michigan could shock the world?” Cook blurted back, “Pearl Harbor shocked the world!” Duly noted.)

Let’s say the Bucs finish with the best record in the NFC, or, hell, the best record in the NFL. Since the AP voters believe the football season ends after Week 17 when they vote on all the individual awards, who should get the MVP of the Bucs?

Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com believes there are only two real candidates: Baker Mayfield or Rachaad White. No matter how the Bucs accomplished this feat nor how well or not well any individual Bucs player played, Smith points out the MVP could only be Mayfield or White.

The last non-quarterback to win MVP was Adrian Peterson. So history tells Smith that Mayfield would have a far greater chance than White of winning the award if the Bucs blew up this fall.

So there you have it, folks. You want Mayfield to play great ball this year. Because if folks are talking about Mayfield being MVP, that means the Bucs are having a fantastic season.

I highly doubt Mayfield wins MVP, but Trask might win the PGAHAC (Pretty Good At Holding a Clipboard) Award.

  2. Crickett Baker Says:

I am so glad this was one article that wasn’t about opining, targeting, predicting, suggesting, or prognosticating the players coming into the draft.

  3. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Kancy blows up with 17 sack from the interior. MVP

  4. Bake n Your Face Says:

Likely not foremost in Mayfield’s mind set. No offense.

According to Licht Baker is already the MVP (Most Valuable Prick)

It was very nice to see the lovely Ms. Watson again.

  9. ModHairKen Says:

The only part of this worth looking at was Ms. Watson.

  10. Marky Mark Says:

And i thought Rachel Watson was Deshaun,s, sister, mother or new wife. No way Mike Evan,s can be MVP after letting a perfectly good pass go through both hands against lions. As far as muncher boy complaining about Bakers last pass of the playoffs that was on Otten for not coming back to the ball and fighting for it. Right on target to deer in headlights Otten.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Since Baker is a Buc, he’s probably get stiffed for another QB on a team with less wins……

  12. Gipper Says:

Beef up O line in upcoming draft and Baker will have a great season. Goal should be to give him Jared Goff time to throw in pocket. Fixing O line and upgrading tight end should be focus this year.

  13. JimBobBuc Says:

Congrats to Baker and his wife, Emily, with their first kid, a daughter named Kova Jade. Hey Joe, get some intel on this cool name’s source.

  14. Toad Bowels Says:

Winfield, Jr. is the teams MVP.

Joeblow in Michigan if Trask was allowed the same chances as Fakerboy was gifted he would have surpassed your teen idol within the six years it took him to be gifted another chance with the Bucs. You clowns are simply crazy thinking that an inconsistent qb, Mr Winsome Losesome , Mr SucksEveryOtherYear and MrTryHardJockboy will ever lead the Bucs to the Bowl. If Jameis Winston wasn’t such a turnover machine, Faker wouldn’t even be able to carry his Bucs jockstrap let alone wear it. Even Tom Brady in his worst year in the NFL was greater than Faker in his best. You fanbois are truly unreal

  21. ATLBUC Says:

I have a feeling Evans will blow up this year with 30 TDS and 2000+ yards. If so, maybe he will get nods for the award

  22. Cobraboy Says:

A guy can dream, can’t he?

  23. NCBuc Says:

    @1987……
Lmao! Couldn’t of said it better myself

  24. SenileSenior Says:

Love Baker! Don’t give a d@mn who gets MVP. The Lombardi is what the whole thing is all about.

    Go Bucs!!!

  25. Duane in Sanford Says:

I like Baker, but most think he is the 3rd best qb in the division. Not a great way to start a MVP campaign. Both he and the offense have room for improvement, so lets start with scoring 24+ pts a game.

  26. Esteban85 Says:

Uh huh and this article is about what now? If only it’s and buts we’re candies and nuts we’d all have a merry Christmas. I’m down with living in a hypothetical NFL scenario but how is this worth writing about?

  27. Esteban85 Says:

I just think you wanted to get out your “shock the world” trope again for the 100th time

  28. Rod Munch Says:

If the Bucs had a season like that, it’s because the defense has a 2002 like season, and Winfield Jr has redefined the position.

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

I just don’t see the greatness you guys see in Baker Mayfield . I just don’t see him as a great quarterback. I think Baker is at the age where he is what he is and he will need the 02 bucs defense to win a superbowl with Baker Mayfield. And the bad part about it is because of the rules those days of building a great defense is over. Maybe a average to good defense and you ain’t winning a superbowl with Baker Mayfield with that type of defense. I think Baker Is like Vince Young they came at the wrong time. Baker Mayfield would have been a good quarterback and a team could win a superbowl with him in the late 90s or early 2000s. Like Vince Young if he would came in these days he would have torn this league up. And before you criticize go look at his win lost record and his numbers with the Titans his last 2 years. He was also the rookie of the year and played in to pro bowls and a playoff game. But Jeff Fisher was the coach and he hated Vince Young and he didn’t want to draft him Jeff Fisher said he wanted Matt Liner and he showed it. Jeff Fisher didn’t want Steve McNair Bud Adams made him start Steve McNair. But I know how most of you think on here. You guys believe the narratives from the national media.
