The Consensus Pick From The Mockers

April 18th, 2024

Tampa-bound, mockers believe.

Joe was listening to a podcast recently where the hosts like to gamble on the draft.

To get a good idea of how to decipher who will get picked by what team, one host said he goes with the most accurate mockers tracked by The Huddle Report.

Another source this same podcaster uses is a site Joe had never heard of. It apparently sifts through all mock drafts and pulls the consensus pick for each team in the first two rounds. This site is known as NFL Mock Draft Database.

If this site is to be believed, better start ordering your Bucs jerseys for Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson. It seems, per this site, that some 26 percent of the mocks it monitors has Robinson as the Bucs’ first-round pick a week from tonight.

Is Joe dubious of Robinson? Yes. Is Joe anti-Robinson? Not really. From what Joe can tell, Robinson gets past his blocks really well. His problem is finishing (hello Joe Tryon-Shoyinka!).

Robinson seems to do a decent job against the run. Maybe he just needs coaching up in order to learn how to put quarterbacks on their arses.

More and more, Joe would rather the Bucs go get Mohamed Kamara of Colorado State or Jonah Elliss of Utah on Day 2, a couple of freak athletes who have a proven ability to bury quarterbacks.

And instead of drafting Robinson at No. 26, grab receiver Brian Thomas of LSU or cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry of Alabama at No. 26.

If the Bucs do draft Robinson at No. 26, Joe is going to cling to the fact that so many Penn State players, once they escape the clutches of James Franklin, tend to blow up when they get to the NFL.

Kamara in day 2 maybe another edge rusher in day 3. Trade Tyron day two maybe to Seahawks.

  2. Hodad Says:

Ladd McConkey pick #26. Licht has them all fooled.

  3. Bucs Guy Says:

If the top 3 Edge rushers are gone at #26; go IOL or trade back. Braswell or Isaac in the 2nd to address Edge.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

One week….can’t get there fast enough…….these mocks and prospect projections are wearing me out!!!

Joe says: And instead of drafting Robinson at No. 26, grab receiver Brian Thomas of LSU or corner Kool-Aid McKinstry of Alabama at No. 26.

Nope…..Bucs should go after Jackson Powers-Johnson or Graham Barton if they are still available. These guys will be starters for the next decade. Not only will this fix the hole in the passing game but it will open up more opportunities in the run game.

  6. Lt. Dan Says:

Nope. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane or JTS.

  7. Trey Says:

    Pleaseeeee no chop. JTS 2.0

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’ll give that Parsons has put up great sack numbers in the NFL, but 2 other Penn State top 30-something picks, Gross Matos (13 sacks in 4 years) and Oweh (13 sacks in 3 years) have put up JTS numbers, who also has 13 sacks.

    ^^^^^^^^
    Jane TS? Hahahahaha

  10. A Bucs Fan Says:

This pick would knock my confidence level down a peg. He is a freak athlete with little production. He’s a JTS clone. Draft any edge or DL but this guy.

  11. SB~LV Says:

    Agree…

  12. heyjude Says:

I like JPJ if we could get him. Still up in the air on Chop. However, from what I have seen, he is a good guy with a lot of potential. Possible that the Rams take him at 19 and that is okay.

  13. ToAd.BoWels Says:

No Chop! That’s one of the Joe’s is fined of saying show me the production and chop doesn’t have it.

Since wide receiver is a strength of this draft it makes a lot of sense to take a wide receiver and round one especially given that Godwins cap value makes it difficult to re-sign him.

I’d be thrilled with Brian Thomas as the choice. Also agree Kamara for Edge rusher.

A quarterback would be a good consolation if the best wide receivers are off the board.

  14. ToAd.BoWels Says:

Damn speech to text. I meant to say a cornerback would be a good consolation, not a QB

  15. Scott Says:

I watched his highlight reel and he looks fast and explosive on the get off. He looked pretty solid from what I saw. Of course it was a highlight reel though

    ________

I don’t disagree with those choices but “next decade” is unlikely for most OL players.
Closer to 5 years is more realistic.

  17. Scott Says:

Just like others have said. Micah Parsons didn’t have sacks in college.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

    HELL NO!

I don’t care how good his “measurables” are….

Lack of College production = No 1st round grade

If he drops like a rock and is there at the end of the 2nd rd – ok, fine – take a chance. But not with a 1st rd pick on this guy.

Too many promising WRs and CBs and OL in this draft from 20>50 who WILL be good NFL players to be taking a chance on Chop’s “measurables”….

Micah Parsons was a MLB/ILB in college, not an Edge like Chop played. Apples and oranges.

  20. BucsFan55 Says:

    bust

  21. Scott Says:

He had 90+ pass rushing grades the last two years. I don’t think he will bust. I understand everyone is terrified after the JTS pick and I’m nervous too. It would suck to miss again. A safe pick would be Kool Aid. Nothing flashy but should be solid.

  22. Scott Says:

Meanwhile JTS college pass rush grades were in the 60s and 70s

  23. Mort Says:

I’d literally rather have Adisa Isaac – his teammate at the same position- over chop.

  24. Leopold Stotch Says:

The only linebacker from PSU you want to go after is the one who wears #11. That’s the alpha of the defense. Only the best of the best get that honor. This guy has 44, so it’s a no from me, plus all the other things mentioned.

  25. SlyPirate Says:

    26% is a Consensus … Interesting, Joe.

So, Florida math says 26 out of 100 is a consensus, even though the vast majority (74 of 100) have a differing opinion. There’s a saying on the west coast, “Only in Florida.” Since none of your readers picked up on this, I can only ascertain that they agree. Okay. Florida politics are now making a lot more sense.

(BTW, the more interesting and more factual story is: If you look at four mocks, all four are different! This aligns with your statistic (1 in 4 is 25%) This is uncharted territory for the Bucs. For anyone who has paid attention, at this time leading up to the draft in each of the last 4-5 years, the actual majority of mockers knew who the Bucs were targeting with their first pick. CBS’ 6 mockers all picked CK last year. The years prior, we knew the Bucs were invested in Hall, Wirfs, Vea, VHIII, etc. We also knew the Bucs were after Mauch, Goedeke, and Marpet. This year we know nothing! It’s crazy. The real story is did Licht tighten the ship or do the Bucs really not know who they are picking? That’s intriguing. It may suggest the Bucs don’t see a ton of value in who’s available, which would indicate a higher probability of trading down.)

  26. JimBobBuc Says:

NO CHOP. What do the mockers say about Chop? They quote his 40 time and other track and field numbers, but not production since he doesn’t have any.

At 26, go with Barton, Latu, or JPJ. If they are gone, trade down to the top of rd2. In early rd2 go C with Frazier, or go G with Haynes, Beebe, or Mahogany; or go edge with Adisa Isaac or Braswell.

  27. Jvato24 Says:

I agree, Chop doesn’t feel like the guy for me, and Elliss and Kamara look decent

  28. gotbbucs Says:

It’s pick #26. That means there’s 25 opportunities for 31 other NFL general managers to do something stupid that could turn the draft on its head.

I honestly don’t care who our 1st round pick is, so long as they don’t absolutely suck once they hit the field. I care more about what our next four picks would be because they’re what will actually determine how this draft class will form the roster.

  29. Buc4evr Says:

Geez another JTS. That’s all this team needs. Better off with a Center that can start for the next 10 years. Why do any of the experts think Chop is anything more than training camp fodder ?

  30. It's Corn Says:

I guess maybe there’s solace that 74% do not think the Bucs will take him.

  31. Jonny Says:

I would rather get another interior DL prospect than Robinson in Rd 1. I still feel pass rush and WR need to be priority for rds 1&2

  32. Olboy Says:

No to Robinson. We. Already have an unproductive edge. Jane TS. Hahah classic

  34. Lord Cornelius Says:

    One more week woot.

    Did another mock

1st) Troy Fautanu OT/OG – 6’3 seems like an OG to me. This would be a crazy steal and not sure why he fell

3rd (traded back to first pick of R3 for another 3rd in 2025.) Marshawn Kneeland DE

    3rd Mike Sainristill CB

4th (moved back again 15 spots to get another 4th in 2025). Malik Washington WR

    4th Jaylen Wright RB

  35. BA’s Red Pen Says:

DO NOT DRAFT ANYONE NAMED Kool-Aid or Chop they will be busts. You heard it here first, My sources tell me Fiddle Faddle Greene out of The University of Southwest St Croix State has caught the eye of Licht and his staff.

  36. StickinUp4Centers Says:

If the knock on Chop Robinson is a lack of sacks, why is there no knock on Kool-Aid for a lack of interceptions?

  37. Scott Says:

From what I read they didn’t even target him much

    I don’t want Kool-Aid, either.

  39. Boss Says:

at this point a warm body is better than nothing.

this D will never look like the tampa 2 or the 9ers from an edge standpoint.

just hope they figure out how to get pressure without leaving the back 1/2 wide a$$ open

  40. Cobraboy Says:

    Just Say “No.”

There may be more high-pick busts in the edge position than any other besides QB. Certainly, the Bucs have experienced edge busts in the past.

However, #26 is not a high pick. The “can’t miss” players are gone by 15 unless a bunch of numbskulls, desperate teams go QB.

    Go IOL please, Mr. Licht.

  41. Joe Says:

DO NOT DRAFT ANYONE NAMED Kool-Aid or Chop they will be busts. You heard it here first, My sources tell me Fiddle Faddle Greene out of The University of Southwest St Croix State has caught the eye of Licht and his staff.

    LOL!

  42. Rayjay1122 Says:

    No to Pork chop.

  43. Mark A Swygert Says:

Licht is probably reading all these negative texts about Chop and figuring that he’ will stay away from this guy. Then fast forward 20 years and he’s going into the Hall of Fame for the team that drafted him on his obvious potential. And all during those 2 decades the same collection of know-it-all self appointed experts will be whining that we did not take him when we had the chance. It’s a Bucs’ life.

    ^^^^^^^^^
You’re already putting Chop in the Hall of Fame? Because he’s fast? Oweh of the Ravens is A LOT FASTER than Chop (look it up), and has 13 sacks in 3 years, THE SAME AMOUNT AS JTS. JTS has more sacks IN THE PROS than Chop did IN COLLEGE the last 3 years, and JTS is a waste of a roster spot.

  45. HC Grover Says:

Like the name…Chop and Ya Ya.

  46. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Edgerrin Cooper might be a sneaky R1 pick. Very athletic and good in coverage and blitzing. Just needs coached up. We will see shortly

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The problem I have with mock drafts are that each person throws out so many of them that they are bound to hit on a couple.

I think only their final mock should count.

I used to do one a year, and I get a few right (like Marpet), but at least I wasn’t throwing darts to pick 6 times a year.

So, I don’t really care what the mockers say.

That new website, what did the consensus predict for us last year? The year before?

    Bet they were not right.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

They predicted Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee in 2023
Isaiah Spiller, RB, Texas A&M in 2022
    Christian Barmore, DL, Alabama 2021

So they have gotten none correct.

  49. catcard202 Says:

It all depends on who’s on the board at #26.
Wouldn’t hate the pick, but wouldn’t move up to get him either.

I’m squarely in a the trade down mindset for the Bucs, if the FO can get a high 2nd + 3rd/5th to do so. See a ton of value on Day 2 / early Day 3. If Licht finds a sucker GM, let them over pay for the #26 & go target value picks Day 2-3.

  50. Rich Says:

DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE….the consistently good teams do just that….it’s how you build long term success. Take the best available according to your draft board…..no question!!!

  51. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Comparing Chop to JTS is just lazy. Chop is a much better prospect with burst and acceleration. JTS just happened to be fast, not quick. Every play, he just loops around the outside of the OT and is never an actual threat to “finish” the play.

Not saying I’m in love with Chop, but I think he’ll be a muuuch better football player than JTS.

  52. Joe in Michigan Says:

Hearty: It’s lazy of you to not realize that JTS has been more productive IN THE PROS the last 3 years than CHOP HAS BEEN IN COLLEGE.

  53. Hearty Dikerson Says:

@Joe in Michigan – not sure if you’re familiar with definition of lazy. I do realize Chop’s sack numbers have been underwhelming but his win rate and number of pressures are much better. His profile is nothing like JTS – that’s the point I’m making. Chop plays with a much lower pad level and has a much better first step. JTS is a fast athlete trying to play football.

  54. Joe in Michigan Says:

Hearty: The Bucs need more sacks. Do you honestly expect a guy who didn’t have many in college to be that guy?

  55. BillyBucco Says:

    Joe
    Parsons was.
You act like you KNOW what is going to happen.
    You don’t.
Of course there is a higher chance he busts.
Only 4 Centers in an 8 year period made the pro bowl in their first 5 years.
It takes time yet everyone thinks JPJ, Barton and Frazier are SURE DEALS.
There is honestly probably about the same percentage people label any of these picks a bust after 2 years.
They may be, they may not, but you don’t KNOW FOR SURE, and neither do we.
