Morning Cup Of Joe

April 29th, 2024

Welcome to your Morning Cup of Joe, an eye-opener to help Joe’s readers ease into their busy workday with a few football links, wacky news and a pleasant distraction.

Distraction of the Day

Preach, Roger Goodell! He wants an 18-game schedule and only two preseason games, with two bye weeks during the regular season. Joe has been banging the table for this for years. In fact, how about a 20-game schedule, four bye weeks and no friggin’ preseason? Preseason games are an abomination and networks will pay far more hundreds of millions (billions?) to the NFL to rid the free world of this stain upon humanity. (Come to think of it, the networks could squeeze the NFL to get rid of preseason games by outright refusing to offer the NFL a nickel to televise them.) Anyone who really thinks preseason games are necessary has been conned and hoodwinked by the NFL industrial complex. If the NFL was truly serious about safety, these preseason games would have been banned rather than effing with the game and having rules about hit-too-hard sacks. [PFT]

Instant QB controversy in Atlanta. Raheem is saying Kirk doesn’t have to look over his shoulder for Penix, but in reality he does. A couple of bad passes from Cousins and the fans will be chanting for Penix to play. Rah likes drama.

  2. Lt. Dan Says:

“…rid the free world of this stain upon humanity” Hahaha!! That was strong. I love that we disagree on the very meaningful preseason games.

So, let’s get this straight. The GM goes to the owner of the Falcons, Arthur Blank, in early March and sells him on the idea that signing Kirk Cousins to 4 years and 180 million dollars is a good idea. I hear him now, “see what Kirk did with Jefferson, we think he will be even better with Kyle Pitts. Don’t worry about his age or his recent major injury.”

What then less than two months later, GH goes back to Arthur and says, “We got a real problem at quarterback. Let’s use this 8th overall pick to address that need. It’s our most important need of the year for us.”

Either the GM, has some magic dust selling ability or Arthur may be slowing down a little.

On another note, early onset dementia is under diagnosed in this country.

Increase roster size to 60 and dress 56 on game days

  5. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Thing about the Faclowns – they will fall in love with next years hot QB draft class, and the next years. You think this is the only good QB coming out? Penix will be in the bench at 26/27 y/o as they drool over the next shinny object. Probably a different coaching staff then too.

Both. Richie McKay is a master politician (yes, technically not the GM). And have you seen Artie Blank lately? He must have aged 20 years in the past five.

    Ta-Da!

(Also what NFL *may* put on the table if the players dig their heels in the mud, is what Pat Kirwan said he heard years ago when NFL wanted to expand regular season: NFL expands rosters but players can not play in more than 16 regular season games. This could be very intriguing as when do you start your backup?)

  8. unbelievable Says:

    – ah that would be a very interesting spin on things^. But honestly I think 18 games is good.

    – saw the David Tepper video last Friday. The guy is such a clown. We are lucky to have him as the owner of a rival in our division lol. Thin skinned doesn’t even begin to describe it…

    – love me some Kay! Outkick would be much more enjoyable if every article didn’t start autoplaying a video of Clay Travis crying and whining though.

18 or even your 20 game season is a seriously dumb idea. People like you and goodell are killing this gsme. Players will not be able to play at a high level for these increasing amount of games per season. Players will absolutely mentally check out and will also not play to a higher intensity as a means of self preservation. This is absolute horrible idea u less you are planning on suiting up your practice squad for a few games. This is just another money grab by Goodell that’ll have him coming up with more ways to ‘keep players safe’ and continue to make new rules that detract from the game while attempting to pocket more money. Goodell needs to go.

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

Lt. Dan, I am very glad that we agree.

Did you really think that while watching the Super Bowl go to overtime?

  12. Joe Says:

continue to make new rules that detract from the game

    TOTALLY agree with that!

And when are people going to quit giving Rich McKay a free pass? Most of these dumb new rules have happened under his watch as chairman of the competition committee. He’s damn near equally to blame as Goodell.

  13. geno711 Says:

Really surprised at comments against a schedule with 1 less preseason game and 1 more regular season game.

This is win for fans, for greedy owners to make more money, AND for players to make more money. That is why the players association will approve it. They know that bottom line they will make more money.

If the average, NFL player makes $200,000 more a season by playing an extra game, what player wouldn’t vote for that over another preseason game where they are sitting around in camp (even if they don’t play in that game). That much cash difference means something.

*** I came up with 200,000 by dividing the average salary of an NFL player of 3.4 million by 17 games.

  14. olboy Says:

Completely non equivocal, joe. Just the time frame alone is enough to overcome your point. These.guys are human and that level and length of assertion is not good for anyone playing or anyone watching. I get that this is in the best interest if those at joebucsfan.com world headquarters and other media outlets due to revenue steam but there will come a point when players checking out or going into self preservation for their own good along with the continued rule change progression to flag tootball level safety will tip the scales and people stop watching and caring and move on to another league or another sport. If you take the gladiator out of the arena, then what?

  15. geno711 Says:

    It could be @olboy.

You start out with an assertion that playing 18 games is part of what is ruining the game. Too many games and what:

1a. Players will mentally check out.
1b. They will play at a lesser level.
    2. New rules on safety will be made that will make the game less fun to watch for you and others.

I accept that these are just your observational theories. Anything else you would like to share other than your personal preferences?

Because personally, I think I and a lot of other football fans (and pro players because of the money) are looking forward to the changes.

  16. Steven007 Says:

18 would be the magic number that should sustain for many years, just like 16 did. Then the preseason games mean a little bit more than they do right now and we don’t have a stupid uneven schedule.

  17. Steven007 Says:

Just looked it up, the NFL had a 16 game schedule for 43 years. An 18-game schedule created the right way should sustain for longer than most of us are even watching football.

The original USFL played 18 games a year not including preseason games. Honest to goodness don’t ever remember anyone wringing their hands about playing too many games.

(Shoot, Luis Sharpe started for the Memphis Showboats, played a full season, then signed with the Cardinals and started all 16 games. Dude played like 40 games in one year if you include preseason.)
