Liam Coen’s Conversation With Chris Godwin

April 16th, 2024

The Bucs rolled out their latest edition of In The Current tonight, and Joe was very intrigued.

And that had nothing to do with Sage of Tampa Bay Sports/JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman being featured a couple of times.

In The Current is the Bucs’ in-house version of Hard Knocks, sanitized to be a corporate infomercial while still staying compelling. The Bucs do a strong job with the roughly seven episodes per year.

Today, Joe liked watching the behind-the-scenes conversation of new offensive coordinator Liam Coen with wide receiver Chris Godwin. It appeared to be their first meeting.

Coen asked Godwin his age (28) and talked to him about being his prime. Godwin agreed, noting it’s a time to “optimize all your training.”

Coen then asked what only a true football lifer would ask an NFL receiver: “How fu**ed up are your hands?”

Godwin held them out and Coen reacted to how “mangled” they are.

Godwin: I’ve seen worse.

Coen: They’re going to be worse.

Coen then seemed to rant about Baker Mayfield’s arm strength. “Baker throws that shi*. … off the tee. It just keeps going,” he said with excitement.

Godwin called Mayfield “a great dude, fiery competitor.” Coen replied: “You guys must love playing with him.”

Joe liked how Godwin responded: “100 percent and it’s like, you know, [Mayfield] don’t complain about shi*.”

Joe heard that and wondered what quarterback Godwin has been around that did complain.

Tom Brady? Jameis Winston? Ryan Fitzpatrick? It can’t be Kyle Trask. Could it be?

Coen has to know Godwin is a huge X factor to this Bucs season. Perhaps the most mind-numbing stat tied to the Bucs passing game is Godwin having 187 catches over the past two seasons with just five total touchdowns.

If Coen get back Godwin back into the end zone every other game like he was years ago, then the Bucs offense should be a lot more dangerous in a hurry.

I absolutely loved the “In The Current” video with Licht, Evans and family, Baker…
    Buc family love right there.

Baker is so positive and everyone loves him. Cleveland Brown fans still love him! Interesting to know which QB complains and what are their complaints.

Sounds like Coen will get Godwin going again. If not, we need to hear from his wife Mariah. She helped out before and can do it again 😊

Let’s rightsize this. Godwin didn’t have an off year. The Bucs had Canales.

  3. VOT Says:

I especially liked the part when they reviewed the increase in scoring at each of Cohen’s stops – 50 TDs vs 29 the year before at Kentucky- twice

Canales was painting by the numbers

    Cohen is an artist

Our O is going to be much better this year

My guess would be for Brady in his final year. He was on the sidelines yelling at Evans on more than one occasion.

  5. Nicholas Carlson Says:

The easiest way to get him back in the end zone a lot is to give the offense short fields. Easiest way to do that is to pressure the quarterback into sacks and picks and throwaways on third down. Thats right. The offensive weapon the Bucs need is a pass rushing OLB!

    Let’s help our offense…..draft a G/C, 3rd WR, RB, TE

  7. pancake block Says:

trying to pacify him early before the mrs pays homage to miko grimes again in a tweet storm again this year?

  8. Cobraboy Says:

Because Bowles was on the hot seat going into last season, he had to make a desperation hire for OC because the top guys wanted nothing to do with the job.

This season is different, so Bowles could attract a guy like Coen.

The O could be very interesting in ’24.

  9. All_da_way Says:

Godwin is going to feast in the slot.

Just need to see which WR will start out on the boundary opposite of Evans. I expect the Bucs to draft a WR to compete with Palmer for that right.

  10. Proudbucsfan Says:

I’m hoping we draft Brian Thomas Jr to fit opposite Evans, and Godwin in the slot

  11. Pops Malone Says:

SlyPirate, I am with you for sure…

Yeah, the ending was a little too rah rah, but overall that In The current episode had me fired up man!

We’re very lucky to have players like Evans and David here for so long. Total class acts, just like Ronde was.

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

It was a great episode. It made me want fly to New Orleans and punch Cam Jordan in the throat.

  14. Bucs Since 76 Says:

Yes please. This is how you make a difference. Maybe a CB would also be nice too. We can all do this if we trade back in the first.

  15. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

I could see Coen using Godwin like Cooper Kupp. Palmer running some deep routes, Evans midrange, Evans sneaking the area Evans cleared out. Slot receiver stuff is gonna be Otten or Durham’s bread and butter. Rachaad doing some close to LOS crosses.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

The Trashk slurped would certainly know more about Baker’s QB play than Godwin or Coen or the rest of the NFL. Can’t believe Jason hasn’t told Bowels to “see what we have” in Trashk.

Newsflash – the reason a paraplegic Mayfield got the start over healthy Trashk in the Panthers finale? Coaches knew they would lose if they gave Trashk the ball.

  17. Shane Callahan Says:

Canales was a helluva cheerleader, but Coen running the O excites me. Go Bucs!
