Jason Licht Using A Clever Scheme?

April 7th, 2024

Failure is not a goal.

Very, very interesting analysis from CBS by the son of a kicker.

John Breech of CBS (his dad was long-time Bengals kicker Jim Breech) had a really savvy thought about the Bucs that makes AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht smarter than your average bear.

Tampa native and eight-year NFL vet Leger Douzable and Breech were breaking down team needs in the draft for the NFC South. Douzable, who played for Todd Bowes with the Jets, believes by trading Carlton Davis, the Bucs’ biggest need may be a corner followed by an edge rusher.

Breech didn’t disagree. Then, he pondered, is this a well-thought-out scheme by Licht? Does Licht purposely have corner and edge rusher devalued in his current (keyword: current) roster construction?

That sounds outrageous on face value but Breech explained. The quarterbacks the Bucs face in the NFC South, Breech said, are garbage. You have Bryce Young, who was truly terrible last year, Kirk Cousins (36) coming off an Achilles injury and Derek Carr who appears to be flaming out with the slimy Saints.

“If there is any division you can get away with not having an edge rush or a good corner, it’s the NFC South,” Breech said.

Breech also added if Licht tried that in the AFC West or AFC North, he and the Bucs would have to be treated for third-degree burns on their arses on a weekly basis.

That’s not the case in the NFC South.

Joe thinks Breech makes sense but Joe has to hit the pause button if Breech thinks this was some well-thought-out directive from Licht to build up other areas of the roster and neglect edge rush and corner.

Just look at how the Bucs have drafted since winning the Super Bowl after the 2020 season should tell people this was not a coordinated effort to blow off the edge rush and corner.

Pretty sure we play teams outside of the NFCS.

  2. ScottyMack Says:

Sounds like a pretty non-plausible theory to me. The Bucs only play 6 games vs. the NFC South. They play another 11 against other teams, many of which should be favored to beat the Bucs this year.

The division only matters if you win ALL 6 of those games – something extremely unlikely. What DOES matter is that Atlanta has a significantly easier schedule than the Bucs (and the Saints), which is why I, personally, think they will win the division this year (not because they are any better than the Bucs).

  3. Scott Says:

We have got to keep swinging for an elite DE. YaYa was a pleasant surprise but need another

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I don’t buy it…but I also don’t buy that he will get a DB in rounds 1-2.

I think there is a strong possibility we trade back in the first…but with picks as they are, I think out first two picks will be Center and Edge.

Although…it would really surprise us all if the first pick…is a quarterback.

  5. Tucker Says:

I think it’s a wr in the first or they trade back.

  6. BelleGladeBuc Says:

The Bucs face these QB’s next season:

    Dak Prescott
    Lamar Jackson
    Jalen Hurts
    Brock Purdy
    Jared Goff
    Justin Herbert
    Patrick Mahomes
Kirk Cousins x 2 = If you give him all day in the pocket his Achilles surgery recovery is a non factor

If you think that not having an edge pass rush against those 8 QB’s in this 9 games isn’t crucial, then I would love for you to tell me how you think those quarterbacks will do against our secondary facing minimal pressure and having all day to throw.

  7. SenileSenior Says:

Center and Edge are top priorities unless BPA trumps. Top level WR or CB for example.

JL calls it with TB’s approval I presume.

    Go Bucs!!

  8. SenileSenior Says:

If we can trade back I will not complain as long as we have a great draft again. In LichtI trust.

  9. adam from ny Says:

i just don’t get why everyone says we are in dire need of a corner…

there’s a multitude of positions that need more tending to…

    edge X possibly 2
    c/g
    wr
    ilb
    rb

    then corner……………………….like seriously, wtf ???

dean and cd3 were kind of even…so dean is your number 1…

zyon jumped leaps and bounds last season and is fine for a developing number 2…

we’ve added bryce hall to back up either or – or in case of an injury to one of them…he is a solid corner who dropped on the depth chart in new york due to the exorbitant amount of talent they have at the cb spot there…

then you have izien and josh hayes (who the team is pretty high on)…

then you have the option of bringing back one dee delaney who is a very good system player…on another team he could turn into hot garbage – that’s why no one has scooped him up yet – but here he is a well oiled system player…a very solid back up option…

also there are always guys floating around as late cuts who can fill in as a vet back up corner, if you must scour the waiver wire in the summer or fall…

    ——–

    so there…….wtf……………we draft a cb…yeah, why not…but like in the 5th round or something…

you do your research and grab a solid guy with upside who maybe fell a bit and could have been a 3rd or 4th…with good height, long arms, GOOD HANDS and a decent 40…

i don’t get the “we need a corner thing” at all…

what, we’re gonna draft a corner and throw him right in with the wolves…?…to get toasted out there…?…this all makes no sense…

i’m baffled and believe if we go corner in round one, someone really screwed up…these media takes are so dam off…yeah jim breech was a heck of a kicker in the kenny anderson and chris collinsworth days, i get it..but this take is just not smart…

and forget that coop de jour dude totally…yeah no unicorns or unicorners needed in tampa

  10. adam from ny Says:

we need a corner about as much as we need a tight end in this draft…

they can literally wait for the 2025 draft at those 2 positions if they want to

  11. unbelievable Says:

Yea this is one of the more ridiculous theories I’ve ever heard floated.

Shaq wasn’t the same after his Achilles and JTS is a bust. None of that was planned or by design lol

  12. adam from ny Says:

    draft needs over corner:

    offense: c/g, wr, rb

defense:edge, ilb……trenches and 2nd level over the back end

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Breech is a nut case. No GM decides not to have a good corner or an edge rush. Bottom line is that JTS didn’t work out and Davis was not always available to play. The guy was a liability like Shaq. He is gone.

  14. Tucker Says:

I’m sure they draft an edge at some point in the draft doubt it’s in the first round though.

  15. Beeej Says:

Is this gonna be 4 seasons ina row we play the Niners?

  16. BucfaninMi Says:

I met Jim Breech when I was a kid, got to shag balls for him

  17. lambchop Says:

Talk about over-thinking this to the point of trying to make sense out of not having a #1 CB or Edge. We play teams outside the NFC South and, oh by the way, we definitely play teams outside of our division in the playoffs and SB.

This is textbook reasoning an explanation from a pile of dog poo thinking you’ll sound smart.

  18. Lt. Dan Says:

This is a VERY deep WR class. The Bucs currently have a good group of WR’s: ME13, CG14, Palmer and Jarrett. Yes the Bucs will draft a WR but not before round 4.

  19. Boss Says:

Spent the money on an old wr with bad hands and an average qb who can’t read the D

    Definitely Bucs life.

  20. Bucben61 Says:

If this guy’s take was toilet paper it wouldn’t be good enough to wipe my a$$

  21. KB Says:

Its funny how everyone thinks not having a top5 QB is garbage. Cousins achilles injury has nothing to do with his arm and he is a better QB than Baker. Hell even Derek Carr has better stats.

Licht hasn’t done anything without Arians and Brady.

  22. BUCman Says:

John Breech wins the award for stupidest thing I have heard stated this off season. Congratulations John Breech!

  23. infomeplease Says:

Everyone has their opinion, most are way off target! IMO!

  24. Shane Callahan Says:

Yes, Bucs need an edge and corner, but I still think IOL is more important. We can easily outscore the NFC South teams if we do this!

  25. Daniel Dream Says:

Joe, I noticed you picked up on my British spelling for arse. You’re welcome! ☺️

  26. Brian in St Pete Says:

This is just a silly take. 11 of our 17 games are outside our division and if we make the playoffs it would be a rarity to play a division foe. CD3 was traded because he had too big of a contract considering his constant lack of availability and lack of turnovers. Shaq was released for similar reasons. Too big of a contract and was in the downside of his career. There’s no secret formula as to why these moves were made.

  27. Dave Pear Says:

Shangrus Piltz in the 8th round. Bank on it.

  28. Marky Mark Says:

Draft the dejean kid out of iowa.

  29. Esteban85 Says:

Getting close to the draft and already these talking heads are running out of things to talk about. Ridiculous concept

  30. Buchead Says:

I’m not sure what could be more credible than the analysis of some obscure kicker’s son. CBS is rockin’!

  31. JeffreyLane77 Says:

This theory Licht has decided not to throw major draft or financial capital behind a player posistion. Based on our divisional opponents weaknesses. Sounds like a plausible shorterm solution at best. Meaning Licht doesn’t have to overpay or reach for a player out of need. Longterm the DE/Edge pass rush has to be addressed either this year or next. Pretty sure this is a make it or break it season for JTS. Im not thinking JTS is getting his 5th year option picked up. So chances are we are drafting olb/edge next year.

I for one am tired of watching this team struggle to get pass rush. I sometimes feel Vea’s talents are being squandered. Olines can just double team Vita Vea. They don’t even have to worry about the other dlineman. Chances are the other dlinemen aren’t going to beat their one on one matchups. If I was Vita Vea taking double teams all day so nobody else can get to the QB. I would be inclined to ask whats the point?

WE HANDED THE DEFENDING NFC CHAMPS THEIR ASSES

Tampa is the only team that can whip the Eagles 31-9 in the playoffs and get NOTHING but disrespect.

If the Cowboys had done to Philly what the Bucs did, they’d be talking Cowboys Super Bowl run this year.
