Jalen McMillan Has The Two Traits You Want In A Productive Receiver

April 28th, 2024

Rookie receiver Jalen McMillan, Tampa Bay’s third-round pick.

It’s great if a receiver has height and speed and can battle for the ball.

But if a guy has stone hands it doesn’t matter. And if a guy can’t shake loose, he will have long days and a short career.

It seems Jalen McMillan is not cursed with Roberto Duran hands nor is he sticky with defensive backs.

Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire broke down McMillan and Easterling describes a receiver who not only gets separation but who also can win contested balls with strong hands.

A smooth, sharp route-runner who creates consistent separation, McMillan has the size and speed to beat opposing defenders in multiple ways. He can create yards after the catch with his explosiveness, and his strong hands ensure that few passes that go his way will end up on the ground.

As Bucs assistant general manager John Spytek noted Friday, had McMillan not been fighting a knee injury last year at Washington, there is no way McMillan would have been on the board for the Bucs late in the third round.

As a result, it smells like the Bucs got a helluva value with McMillan and maybe a steal.

Not sure if Jalen will be as good as Godwin, but he is a better prospect coming out of College than Godwin.

He was neck and neck with Odunze (who went 9th overall) in stats in 2022 and then held back by injury in 2023.

    Really, really promising.

His hands are bigger than Bakers at 10”.
He scoops up everything thrown his way.
Polk only got showcased because Jalen got injured.
He beat Odunze in receptions and TDs in 2022.
    This guy was overlooked.
