Graham Barton Loved Tossing His Shoes

April 29th, 2024

Some college players love the process leading up to the NFL Draft. Others don’t like it.

The Buccaneers’ first-round draft pick last week, center/guard Graham Barton, is in the latter category.

He wasn’t being negative during a recent podcast interview at NFL.com, but Barton’s message was clear. Barton happily threw out his pink and yellow track training shoes after his Duke University pro day.

“Never going to need these again,” Barton said with a smile, noting he couldn’t wait to return to 100 percent football training. He mentioned offensive line drills and more.

Work, work, work, that’s the kind of guy Barton says he is. And he says he’ll lead with the Bucs through showing good habits, practicing with great purpose and, hopefully, setting an elite example.

“I’m not the guy who gives the pregame speech,” Barton said.

For now, Barton sounds like a lunchpail player that Bucs fans will love eventually for his play, not pretty hair, big quotes or rah-rah escapades and more.

A team can never have too many of those guys.

Sounds like Barton is mature mentally. A lot of these young kids get a ton of money and forget they have to earn it.

  2. Kalind Says:

Just go where Wirfs goes. Eat what he eats. Say what he says. Do what he does. Lift what he lifts. You’ll be fine

  3. HC Grover Says:

    Fail Safe pick.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Barton probably can’t jump out of pools like Wirfs…..but maybe he can get out without using his hands or arms….just step out.

  5. BucU Says:

He’s a confident mofo. Gotta like that.

  6. SB~LV Says:

Now that DW is gone who will deliver the game day speech 😉

  7. Mark A Swygert Says:

I don’t have a daughter, but if I did he sure seems like great son-in-law material.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

    He’s got a point.

Asking 300+ lb men to run as fast they can for 40 yards – and you’re going to be timed and judged on that ability is kind of cruel and pointless.

Even Graham Barton – who according to the RAS scoring method was THE most athletic ‘Center’ (or 2nd most athletic Guard – take your pick) in the modern history of NFL football – a young man who ran a sub 5 second 40 at 315 lbs – sounds like he somewhat resented the “process” of being “measured” athletically.

Which is understandable. Especially the ‘requirement’ of making these big boys run the 40…..

  9. Crickett Baker Says:

Well, I sure hope he plays great and doesn’t talk too much. He says “you know” so many times my head spun.

  10. KABucs Says:

“You know” and “like”… the conversational crutch words for all millenials and Gen-Zers every where! Even smart ones! LOL
Gen-Xers started this “like” usage in the 80’s thanks to Valley Girls (I’m a youth of the 80’s). Soooo sad! I apologize for my generation starting this.

  11. Dave Pear Says:

It’s too much to ask, but I have this fantasy of him turning out to be the interior OL version of Wirfs.

That’s the ticket to an offense that can do whatever it wants.

  12. Bojim Says:

Wirfs has probably already contacted him. As well as Mayfield.

  13. lambchopp Says:

Safe to say, Graham Barton won’t be eatin’ W’s!!!!!

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    So happy with this pick!

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Baker Mayfield is on the hot seat. They gave him a.line that will eventually become of the best. If he regressed, there is no excuse

  16. Jason Says:

I like how these last two drafts Licht has picked smart players that got that dog in them.

  17. Doc Says:

Okay, but can he block nose tackles in the N.F.L., they also get paid. Will not be easy for a rookie.

  18. BUCS TRUCK Says:

If Barton just had red hair.

  19. WiseCrack Says:

You know this is not a bad pick if you know what you are doing. And you know Jason is a genus with OL picks. So, you know what is next right?

  20. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    Bonzai is smoking hash

  21. VOT Says:

He exudes maturity, all signs point to him as a cornerstone player that last 10+ years in the league

Extremely happy with this selection- not expecting perfection but he is a definite upgrade to either Hainsey, Stinnie, Leverett, or Feiler

  22. rrsrqnc Says:

Bucs have one more year to win this division and everyone catches up. I do think we win the South this year… but gonna need to find an identity this year, a defensive stalwart or an offensive juggernaut. Which I think neither, just a gritty team like the coach and QB

  23. infomeplease Says:

When he gets that first paycheck, I’m sure he’ll be thinking fondly of kicking ash n the 40!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Me too man, I’m just an average Joe, and when I get home from a hard day working on the construction site, I can’t wait to kick off my shoes and have my wife serve me dinner. This guy is very relatable, which means I like him because he’s just like me! If he wasn’t like me, if he liked wearing shoes indoors, well, then I’d hate him and want him burned on a stake – but thankfully that’s no issue here.

  25. WhatTheBuc Says:

Dave, You’re having a fantasy about 2 men in uniform?

and like I said to the others in your haters crew (that we all know are hoping him to fall flat on his face because it pains you to admit you were wrong) – if he balls out AGAIN then this is your last year of avoiding eating humble pie that you were wrong about him – No more excuses.

    I hear you. KABucs.

“the conversational crutch words for all millenials and Gen-Zers every where!”

Where oh where has the educational required reading of Napoleon Hill’s” Think and Grow Rich” gone? Out with 1984, Animal Farm, Feirenhight 451, Of mice and men, For whom the bell tolls, Alas Babylon, The old man, and the sea?

  28. LakelandSteve Says:

Time will tell but Licht did an excellent job with this draft, even the late round picks.

  29. Mr. Editor Says:

Just heard Ira on the Florida Sports Network with his preliminary take on the NFL draft. Excellent analysis! I hope that we’ll hear more soon from the gang on this site

    Me likeeey!

We had enough Rah Rah to last me at least three seasons with Diva White. But I would take JPPs Rah Rah for another season if he could still bring it.

Team leaders need more than the smack talk!

    Go Bucs!

Hey RustyR, it’s spelled “Fahrenheit.” What’s with the grammar yap on here? BTW, I laughed my butt off at Valley Girls…they were like sooo clueless. Hope joes do a good eval report on our UDFAs.
