Emory Hunt: Jared Verse Could Make Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

April 23rd, 2024

Can a rookie teammate save him?

Joe doesn’t think there is a Bucs fan who wouldn’t love to see the lightbulb flash on for Joe Tryon-Shoyinka this year and the dude roast offensive tackles.

Sadly, the 2021 first-round pick has shown little to no evidence that will happen. Well, maybe one play in Week 18 last season. With the playoff-clinching, NFC South-clinching game still in doubt late, JTS made the play of his career when he stripped Bryce Young on a would-be pass play.

JTS followed that up with a pair of quarterback hits on Jalen Hurts in the wild card round against Philadelphia. That was significant for JTS as he went Weeks 13-17 without a quarterback hit.

In the divisional round at Detroit, JTS reverted to his non-factor self.

Were those two games, Carolina and Philadelphia, enough of a spark from JTS to offer hope? Well, Emory Hunt of CBS, the Czar of the Playbook, thinks he knows the move the Bucs need in order to snap JTS out of his funk.

Draft Jared Verse.

Joe spoke with Hunt at the combine and Hunt is convinced you line up JTS opposite a monster edge rusher like Verse and JTS will rise up.

“He’s that type of guy,” Hunt said of Verse. “He’s a timing guy but he is also productive in how he is destructive and frees up stuff for everybody else.

“So pairing him with a Tyron — who was a prospect I liked coming out of college; he was my No. 1 edge rusher that year — he was someone that was raw.

“Last year towards the backend you see the flashes of [JTS] being able to show the athleticism to have to have to handle today’s quarterbacks that are out there. Chase a play going away.

“If [JTS] had someone they had to worry about on the other side… then you will see the best of both players.”

Well, Joe was slightly skeptical of what Hunt said about JTS needing someone on the other side to unleash him. But Hunt might be onto something.

Rookie edge rushers rarely do much in the NFL. And JTS trailed both Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul in snaps in 2021. No surprise. JPP was also playing with one wing for most of that season and wasn’t anywhere close to his younger self.

Then the next year, in 2022, Shaq’s production really fell off before he blew out his Achilles in midseason. Last season, Shaq wasn’t remotely like he was prior to 2022.

So yeah, one could argue JTS really hasn’t had a bunch of help. Now that doesn’t excuse JTS for being largely invisible, but Joe sees Hunt working here.

At best, JTS had edge rushers opposite him who were big time on the downside of their careers.

“Verse would be an outstanding selection for Tampa Bay,” Hunt said.

The problem, of course, is that Verse would be a rookie. Again, rarely do rookie edge rushers make an impact. Joe doesn’t believe JTS’s fifth-year option will be picked up for 2025, which makes him a free agent next spring.

Drafting Verse, which would be a helluva pickup, might be too late to save JTS’s Bucs career.

I would rather like to see Yaya Diaby pair up with Verse.

  2. SB~LV Says:

    ACC
is all I have to say

  3. Colonel Angus Says:

This is a contract year for JTS. We should see his best go at earning a fat contract. If he can’t do it in a contract season, it’s not gonna happen for him.

  4. Bobby M. Says:

Edge rusher likely wouldn’t have much impact until mid season. Bowles defense is complex and requires a thorough understanding of assignments. Very tough for rookies to understand their roles in the first yr which forces Bowles to dumb down the scheme or give the rookie one assignment vs reading/reacting.

  5. PSL Bob Says:

Yeah, sounds good, but it’s kind of a pipe dream. Not because JTS can’t rise up to be the player everyone thought he would be, but because no way Verse is going to be available when the Bucs pick at #26.

  6. Buccup Says:

JTS doesn’t like contact. Gifted athlete who just chose the wrong sport. Should be playing basketball.

  7. Netwalker Says:

So why can’t Yaya fill that role?

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

Verse won’t be available and it’s too expensive to trade up to get him. I don’t agree with the premise that edge players help each other. I DO think an interior rush will push the QB out of the pocket to the edge for a sack. I’m a big fan of an interior rush, so I don’t mind going DT3 early in the draft to replace Hall.

  9. HC Grover Says:

Plan 9 is a main part of Bowles defensive scheme. He actually is very happy with what he does it is part of the plan.

  10. John Sinclear Says:

The odds of JTS “Rising up” this season are about the same as the odds of getting mauled by a polar bear and a grizzly bear on the same day!

  11. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Expecting JTS to turn into a productive player this year is like waiting for Godot. He’s a TE.

  12. Lt. Dan Says:

Verse will be long gone when the Bucs are on the clock. They have too many needs to move up too far.

  13. Olboy Says:

If our boy, JTS, even sniffs a QB, you know that the opposing team has bad, horrible and horrendous oline play.

    ^^^^^^^^
Plus, it gives you something to complain about, which seems to be your favorite thing to do.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

JTS is being held back by Todd The Genius Bowels. Jason needs to insist Todd hire a true defensive coordinator who will install schemes and call plays that enable his players to play to their strengths and know their assignments, and quit making the same mistakes again and again and again. JTS probably doesn’t even know what he’s supposed to do half the time.

Jason – whether Todd likes it or not, make it happen.

  16. Olboy Says:

^i hope jts makes me eat them words this upcoming season

  17. Bucfan Says:

Teams do not have the luxury to have all their players to fit the d/c’s system. A good d/c has his system and tweaks it to fit the talents of his players. Perhaps our d/c needs to make adjustments on occasion.

  18. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Is Verse big enough to play right end? If he’s an ‘edge’ rusher and not a true DE then he’s another backup on the left side. We have like 4 guys, including JTS and Yaya, that can play that position. We need size in that spot.

  19. matthew a veal Says:

trade down, get 2 lesser picks, and let them compete to fnd a player. repeat unless you know you have a good one already

Cut your losses trade Tyron to Seattle for their 3rd round pick see how he plays at home.

  22. HC Grover Says:

J.I.M. yep I love that Plan 9 From Outer Space. When he fires his Retro Rocket ya never can tell what will happen. He stands away from the action and gives Bowles reports on the situation.

  23. HC Grover Says:

No one realizes how Bowles uses Plan 9. Unless they have ever gone Duck Hunting. He is the only Decoy in the NFL. Yes a Decoy. Very effective. It is complicated you have to watch the plays very close to understand.

  24. BucU Says:

“”That was significant for JTS as he went Weeks 13-17 without a quarterback hit.””
    I didn’t know that. That’s brutal.

  25. Noclu4u Says:

Bucs were 7th in NFL in sacks and dead last in running the ball and not much better at pass protecting . Bucs must come out of this draft with a starter at center and if possible at guard too .
Bucs weren’t just the worst running team in the NFL last year. They were one of the worst in NFL history. Get O-lineman Licht .
    As always Go BUCS !!!

  26. Noclu4u Says:

Letsbuccingho lmao if Bucs could get a 3rd for shoinka they should jump at the opportunity. Be lucky if they could get a 5th .

  27. BucEmUp Says:

I dont think the Bucs situation at pass rush is as bad as everyone thinks. We have some young guys who looked good in limited playing time.

Best laugh Ive had in a while Thanks!!!

Still time for JTS to up his game. Not counting on it but ya never know.

  30. SlyPirate Says:

    Verse + Van Pran =

    NFCS Champ
    NFC Championship

  31. Larrd Says:

With YaYa around, pairing Troyinka with a rookie as starters simply won’t happen.

Sounds like a Kirwin idea, lol.

  32. SenileSenior Says:

Bowles has said that JTS performs well at many things he has asked of him. This means that he is smart enough to play roles in TB’s intricate defense. Apparently high sack totals are not a high priority for Todd.

  33. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I don’t know, hmm, someone has got to take him out there just the two of them work him. I think he was a guy that was full of himself. You can try to look glamorous at the house. He needs to go back to the basics and correct those little things, all the little things really good movie Denzel Baby.

  34. HC Grover Says:

Bowles sends in his Decoy…Plan 9 to try and hold to a FG.

  35. Esteban85 Says:

Oh I like that plan, trade JTS to move up and draft Verse. If that’s on the table I wouldn’t hate it but we really need all the pass rushers we can get. JTS is decent depth at edge but we need a game wrecker. I was watching Latu highlights and I would say he’s the best pass rusher in the draft. No way we get him but Verse? I’d move up to 20 for him.
