Could Bucs Surprise Fans By Picking A Quarterback?

April 9th, 2024

Surprise?

Yeah, the Bucs need help at more positions than what the team let on with all the happy talk at the combine in February.

The Bucs could use a corner. Lord knows they terribly need an edge rusher in the absolute worst way, a left guard, an inside linebacker — the loud crowd demands center Robert Hainsey be extradited to a foreign land — a running back and probably a wide receiver, as Joe isn’t sure either Mike Evans or Chris Godwin is on the roster in two years. A tight end wouldn’t be a wasted pick, either.

Cody Benjamin of CBS seems to think the Bucs could surprise the NFL by drafting a quarterback at No. 26 or No. 57.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Top picks:
Nos. 26, 57 overall

The Bucs just re-signed Baker Mayfield to a $150 extension, but the deal is structured in a way Tampa Bay can actually save up to $20 million by cutting the redeemed journeyman after 2024, should the extended marriage not pan out. In other words, Mayfield is the guy here, but like Geno Smith in Seattle after his breakout, the bond isn’t irrevocable. Only Kyle Trask and John Wolford sit behind him on the depth chart, meanwhile.

Here is the thing: And it is something that “this Joe” and The Sage of Tampa Bay Sports, JoeBucsFan.com columnist and podcaster Ira Kaufman, agree on. What about Michael Penix or Bo Nix? Joe has no idea how far those guys will slide.

This is a rare year in that there are so many good quarterbacks that it might push one or two down the road that in any other year would never get past the top-10.

If Penix or Nix fall into the 20s somehow, does Licht go and get one of them? Trade up?

Now Joe knows what you are going to ask, “Hey, the Bucs signed Baker Mayfield, what about him?” What about him? He’s your starting quarterback.

The Bucs signed Mayfield to a three-year contract but it really is just a two-year contract as the Bucs have an out after two season.

Yes, Joe knows what you will next say, “Well, what about the quarterback you just drafted?” In recent years, the Packers (twice) and the Chiefs seemed to have very good luck sitting their first-round picks of a quarterback. After sitting for a couple of years, they were knighted starters (Pat Mahomes only sat one year, Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love sat multiple years) and they seemed ready to rock when they became starters.

If Mayfield is still lighting things up, you have one helluva trade-chip insurance policy on the bench, though there’s little or no history on the trade value of a backup QB that hasn’t played.

    no

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

“the loud crowd demands Robert Hainsey be extradited to a foreign land”

lmao. Feels like trolling at this point lol. I don’t think I’ve read one comment saying they want this guy actually gone from the team. Everyone sees value in him as a backup / depth / spot starter.. Hell maybe he takes some massive leap and becomes an above average starter this year.

I have a feeling 6 QBs go in the top 15. 5 for sure. That would be ideal for us.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

Perhaps we could grab a QB, but not in the first round. Edge rusher or CB is what we need if we are intent on making a run in the playoffs.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

This is more stoopid than trading for Micah Pussons.

  5. geno711 Says:

If you discard the injuries, Pennix is worth the pick.

The NFL, however, is very likely to kill him.

  6. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

“Penix suffered season-ending injuries in each of his four seasons at Indiana (2018-21) — two torn ACLs and two shoulder issues ” Yeah lets mortgage the future on this pic

  7. Dave Pear Says:

Trade chip? Jason wouldn’t trade for someone with no performance film in NFL games, why would anyone else?

  8. Dave Pear Says:

And if we’re seriously talking about Penix (heh heh heh) or Nix, might as well draft Rattler late. Bo Pemix sucks.

  9. Cover deuce Says:

The only thing worse than spending a 2nd on a QB to ride the bench is spending a 1st to let a QB ride the bench.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We shall see. But I doubt it happens. Maybe they roll the dice in 6 or 7.

But really, wouldn’t our current backup fit into that category?

  11. Boss Says:

I would agree….BUT Trask was never given a chance.

I say no simply with the player in mind and the ineptitude of this coaching staff

  12. Conner50 Says:

Yea let’s draft a quarterback when we did a few years ago and refuse to see what he’s capable of with the starters…. Make it make sense

  13. Bucs Guy Says:

Absolutely not. That’s more stupid than drafting a CB in the 1st rd.

  14. Larrd Says:

Nix and P-nix will slide cause they are nothing special. They were journeymen in college, for F’s sake!

Cody Benjamin has Baker Derangement Syndrome. Pay him no mind.

  15. Bucben61 Says:

    Wtf!!

You sound like a broken record…let’s draft a qb…sit him for 2 years then trade him…you can’t make this sh#t up

  16. Gerald Says:

No. We have Kyle Trask. We play around and throw shade at the kid sometimes but Kyle is as good as Penix or Nix imo. 0 reason to waste a high draft pick

  17. Bucnjim Says:

Highly unlikely! The more I look at players with the best chance of still being on the board the more I like the idea of trading down for possibly a second and a third.

  18. heyjude Says:

Cody Benjamin, a big yawn. We have never really seen Trask show his skills.

With that being said, Penix would be a nice try if we could get him. Agree with Joe, Baker’s contract is really only 2 years. So there is that too. So much to think about since we have other greater needs.

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

    No way.

  20. Winny Testaverde Says:

Unless Penix ( Nix is a Zach Wilson stunt double me thinks ) falls all the way to the Bucs Aaron Rodgers style…then no. I wasn’t sold on Penix until watching him in the college playoffs. Strong, accurate arm with heart ( maybe even moxie 😉 ). Too many immediate needs otherwise. I’m still rear-sore that the Bucs picked Trask over safety ( a desperate need at the time ) Andre Cisco.

  21. Lol Says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAH. PEOPLE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT KYLE FUC&%$ TRASK…………………….. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

    LOL

  22. Defense Rules Says:

After several of your most recent draft proposals, I’ve decided that you could make a fortune as a TV screen writer Joe. Comedies of course. Sure would beat most of what I’m seeing on TV today.

  23. Scott Says:

No way we get a first round QB. I expect them to possibly get one later

  24. Pickgrin Says:

    LOL – Um…. NO

QB room is set. Bucs MIGHT draft a QB day 3 if the value is extreme – more likely they bring in a UDFA as a camp arm/practice squad candidate.

Fix the OLine! Find an Edge rusher.

The priorities for how to best improve this team and give us a shot at a Super Bowl in 2024 or 2025 are clear.

High picks should go mostly to the trenches!

  25. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The quarterbacks you mentioned (Love, Mahomes, Rodgers) sat in the same system for at least a year if not more. Our offensive has been changing every year lately. With Bowles being on a year to year situation and/or our OC leaving, no chance for continuity.

What about Baker’s psyche? Is he going to go mental if we draft a QB high? Didn’t the Bucs have to grovel with Brady to let him know they were going to draft Trask in the 2nd round?

  26. Aaron Says:

If our front office believes we should draft a 1st round QB – I’m all for it. A good QB is a lottery ticket. Just like I trust our coaching staff on Trask….behind close doors they didn’t think he was special.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Scotty in Fat Antonio, how dare you make sense on this here blog!

  28. Bucben61 Says:

Bo nix and Michael penix will be 24 year old rookies…I guess we could draft one and pair them with the 25 year old rb rookie from Kentucky

Teams don’t draft 24 year old rookies then sit them for 2 years…that’s absurd

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If Baker blows it (which is probably 50-50 at this point), then Trask still will not get his shot…because of Bowels.

If Bowels is fired by the end of next year, then if the new coach is young, we might see Trask get a shot. But not older coach is going to start a young QB with not game experience.

Trasks only chance to show what he can do is if Baker is injured…which might force Bowels to play him (although I can see him starting Wofford because of ‘experience’).

  30. TREY ALDERSON-CLOUTIER Says:

If Penix or Bo Nix are there at 26, trade down with a QB needy team. We don’t need a QB, we need a pass rusher.

  31. MadMax Says:

We’re drafting a kicker in the 1st….it’s obvious. Tell all the other teams we’re going for a 60yd consistent fg kicker and as long as we get at least half way to the 50 yd hash, we’re scoring 3 baby….the D can hold up enough….lol

  32. Olboy Says:

I’m glad you dredge this info up, joe. Something to chuckle about and share these chuckles with other chuckling chuckle heads.

Late rnd QB maybe but highly unlikely. As you mentioned, Mayflake has 2-3 years and we have wolfford as backup. Trask will go third string this year; Sry homers. Odds are, if we get an early day 1 draft in the next two years, then I’d say that the contract will be two years only and we’ll draft a QB at that point or see what trask has. /Rolleyes

  33. Tony marks Says:

“If Mayfield is still lighting things up, you have one helluva trade-chip insurance policy on the bench”

At best a rookie you selected at 26 and who didn’t outplay Baker to get some field time might get you a 3rd

So your “Helluva trade-chip is getting a 3rd for a first round pick?

as for pciking one in the second. UM go tot give the Kyle Kult some love. they havr a point. We did that already.

  34. Cobraboy Says:

Penix reminds me of Teddy Bridgewater.

says who? I mean beside Your hate birgadel

  36. BillyBucco Says:

Daniel Jeremiah says without the injury concerns Penix would be rated right up there with the Big 3. His arm talent is absurd. I really think the Raiders will take him after Denver or Minnesota trade up for McCarthy. It’s quite possible all 6 QBs are gone before we pick and Rhett Lewis just mocked Brian Thomas to us at 26. Speaking of Rodgers sitting early, near the end of his career they drafted Love instead of giving Aaron any 1st round WRs.
My thought is if you like Mayfield, which it seems they do, then surround him with talent, don’t keep looking behind door#2. That particular door closed when you signed Mayfield.
If we had gone the route of getting an edge rusher, ILB and Center in FA, then yeah trading up for Penix makes sense. If you wanna compete NOW, it doesn’t.
This idea is now moot IMO.

  37. Capt. Tim Says:

Holy Crap, we only have 3 Quarterbacks!!!!!
Thats INSANE! Most teams gave at least 7! Several have 45 or more!
What If Kyle and John get lonely sitting on the Bench? Alot of the other guys dont have time to chat- they have to play football.
That could Leave Woolford and Trask all alone, just sitying there! Its Cruel!

And What if One has to go Pee? Then the other guy is TOTALLY ALONE!
Or what if they wanna play Cards? Or start a hoola hoop Tournament?
We just dont have enough QBs on the Bench! Its clear to me now, that QB is our
    TOP PRIORITY!

Thank Heavens for the masterminds handling the Team. Hopefully the draft the 11 quarterbacks we’re short.

How majy guys do you need for a hoola hoop tournament?

  38. Dave Pear Says:

    Gosh. Broken record.

“Trashk hasn’t been given a chance.”

    1. You earn your chance.
    2. Maroons haven’t seen him but the coaches have.
    3. Bowels may be a lousy head coach, but he clearly would like to win. Why would he lessen the Bucs win probability by putting in a QB he knows sucks?

  39. Tucker Says:

When they drafted Trask that was his chance the fact that he didn’t have enough talent to make it undeniable that he should be the starter says all that needs to be said. Bucs have other areas of need that they definitely don’t need to waste it on drafting a QB in the first.

  40. Tampa Bay-ker Says:

Spencer Ratler in the 4th. He’s Mayfield 2.0

  41. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Nix is WAY WAY overrated. He should only be signed as a free agent. In the CFL.

  42. Duane in Sanford Says:

You invest a first round pick in a guy that wont play so that you can later trade him away for a first round pick? Makes no sense. Draft fever seems to be getting out of control. This team is in win now mode. Licht is going to spend the premium picks on guys that can contribute this season. That short term commitment is not only to Baker. Its to the vets on the team, Todd Bowles, and maybe even Jason Licht.

  43. Hodad Says:

Adoni Mitchell wide receiver Texas. Licht will say, we can’t wait to put him on the field, and in that wide receiver room with Evans, and Godwin. We were lucky this mature, young 21 year old receiver with size, speed, and production was still on the board when we picked at 26. Good luck covering Evans, Mitchell, Godwin in the slot, Odden at TE, with White coming out of the backfield. Fix the IOL with the next 2 picks, and away we go!

  44. gotbbucs Says:

    How about…no!

  45. A Bucs Fan Says:

If the Bucs draft Mitchell or Brian Thomas Jr. I’d say go for Christian Haynes in the 2nd then double dip on EDGE in the 3rd before kicking the cans on a RB or LB in the mid-late rounds.

  46. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

The Bucs conducted multiple former interviews with QBs over the past month so it would be no surprise if they drafted one.

  47. Jordan Says:

They shouldn’t this year but they might. Definitely next year if we miss playoffs.

I’d rather see us draft offense early that’s not a QB to try and help Baker. He’s still pretty young for a QB.

  48. Oneilbuc Says:

I’m watching the saints vs Bucs the second game and the score is 7-0 in the second quarter where was the offense the whole first quarter and that includes Baker Mayfield ??

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Defense done there job but the offense sucked in that game . I’m rewatching all of the games from last year.

  50. #99 the big fella Says:

I love how the experts have nix and penix as 1st rounders. And we have fans that actually think they know better than the experts and say these two guys suck.. lol some of you guys couldn’t be the general manager of a Dollar General store.

  51. Oneilbuc Says:

    99. You think those guys are really experts when they are wrong 90 percent of the times? I remember these same experts said Mitchell Trbisky was the next Steve Young. These are the same experts who said Mahomes would be a bust because you don’t draft a quarterback from Texas Tech. The same experts who think Derrick Carr is a good quarterback lol 🤣🤣 !! According to the game tape Penix Jr is the most accurate quarterback in the draft this year. Drake May ain’t as good as the experts says he is according to the game tape!! They do the same thing we do on here and that’s give options on who we think is going to be good or bad.

  52. Let Them Eat Bake Says:

I love the way Mayfield plays, but the way he plays also means that it’s wisdom to have a guy behind him who can carry the team for a game or three. I’d take a Penix or a Nix for that role.

  53. Olboy Says:

Oneilbuc spending the day right! And he makes a valid point about that NO game and our offense, especially in the first half. We need to score more points. Our D can consistently stop points (if you don’t rewatch the Houston game) but our O struggles and have struggled for two years now. Watch that game oneil. How’s our o line? That’s where we have to draft. Edge can suck it up and get that next level. Get this oline the changes it needs to get more points on the board. That’s the path and if you’re throwing 150 mil at Mayflane you dam well better get him some lanes opened and time to progress and a run game.

  54. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

I’ve never seen a first round drafted backup QB make a game changing play. See what I did there Joes?

  55. Oneilbuc Says:

We didn’t score until 6 minutes in the 4th quarter and our running game was bad but the o line was not as bad people said it was. Their were quite a time Baker had time to throw but held on the ball to long. Now all of it wasn’t his fault. I saw how the recivers couldn’t get open but he did have the runningbacks open on some of those plays and he didn’t throw it to them. But if Baker first read wasn’t their he panicks to much in this game. But I wouldn’t mind drafting a o lineman in the first or second anyway. But this o line was not as bad as people said it was.

  56. Oneilbuc Says:

We need to draft a runningback as well White miss a lot of holes he could have ran threw I what Joe was talking about when he said that about White!!

  57. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker got all his yards in garbage time in this game!! He had 47 yards passing in the first half!!

  58. #99 the big fella Says:

Oniel , you obviously have it out for Baker.. I don’t think I have ever seen you say anything in a positive light about him..

  59. Jeffs grandpa Says:

So it’s the coaching staffs fault that trask ain’t the guy sure whatever makes you sleep better at night

  60. ToAd Bowels Says:

If the NFL rules suddenly change to make a 2nd QB one of the 22 players who start then it makes sense, Joe. Otherwise, let’s concentrate on strengthening the weakest of the 22 starting positions which are in no particular order the 2nd Edge rusher, 2nd iLB,, 2nd CB, LG, and 3rd WR.

Using a late pick or signing an UDFA as a development guy for the taxi squad to replace Trask or Wolford in 2025 makes sense though.

  61. Ugo Says:

Oneilbucs, you do realize the 3rd and 4th quarters are only garbage time when the game has already been decided, right?!? Like if we are still in the fight in qtr 3 and 4, it’s not garbage time. You seem to fundamentally misunderstand the simplest of terms. Coming back in the 4th quarter to win the game is not padding stats in garbage time, it’s comeback/late-game heroics territory, which is a positive thing and which Baker absolutely is

  62. Rod Munch Says:

I’m not a fan of Baker, but I highly doubt the Bucs would take anyone.

If Baker doesn’t work out, then Bowles is getting fired – and possibly Licht (to be cleary, I would not fire Licht). If you have a new coach, they’re going to want their own QB, so that’s why I doubt they pick someone.

In any case, I think the Bucs are trying to give Bowles a legit shot to win now, and that will mean picking someone at an area of need in the draft, since I think Bowles is pretty much on a year-to-year basis at the moment.

But who knows, I could be totally wrong.

  63. Dave Pear Says:

Good god, Osqueelbuc. Get a job with the Bucs. You are after all the player personnel who hated the Bucs winning a Super Bowl and now are hating that they won a playoff game and were competitive in the divisional round with Baker Mayfield.

You would rather have some young dude and lose, repeatedly.

You’ll go far as a player pro personnel guy. Licht must be dying to interview you. You’d probably make him wet his pants he would laugh so hard at your ideas.

The slow starts were all on Canales. Coen will.come out firing away.

  68. BUCman Says:

No, we are good at quarterback. We are already going into year 4 having a 2nd round quarterback sitting on the bench behind a proven starter. Now you want to draft another one in the first round to sit on the bench for a couple of years. You must really value that benchwarmer position highly Joe.

  69. BPBucsfan Says:

Last time I checked, we need a PASS RUSH.

  70. Oneilbuc Says:

    99. I just call it like I see it Baker is a average quarterback at best he’s not a trash quarterback but he’s average. The only thing I did was rewatch a game. Baker had some good moments but he’s not this great quarterback you guys say he is. And I’ve given Baker credit when he played good so that’s not true. But I can’t ignore or blame everyone else on the team when he plays bad like a of y’all do. That’s why I already know when he plays bad you guys are not going to admit it and if someone does admit it then you guys call it hate!! Telling the truth about a player or team is not hate.

  71. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave Pear. I was happy and celebrating when the bucs won the superbowl you and others gets made because I didn’t say Brady was the only reason why we won the superbowl like a lot of y’all think. I will never make one player bigger than the team and as far as my job goes I’m my own boss. I don’t answer to nobody I work when I want to and if I decide to take a day off or even a week off I can do that. But I don’t have to call you names like a 9 year old kid do just because I disagree with you are anyone else on this site.

  72. Bucben61 Says:

This is for you Onielbuc..from the Detroit game:

QB Baker Mayfield completed 26-of-41 passes (61.4%) for 349 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions to earn a passer rating of 94.5. His 349 passing yards represent the third-highest single-game total in Tampa Bay postseason history, with his three touchdowns ranking tied for the most by a Tampa Bay quarterback in club postseason history.

Mayfield’s postseason passer rating of 106.3 across his two postseason games with Tampa Bay is the highest postseason passer rating by any player in franchise history. His career postseason passer rating of 100.4 ranks fifth among active players.

Mayfield’s six postseason touchdowns with Tampa Bay rank second-most in club history. His two postseason games with three-or-more passing touchdowns are tied with Tom Brady for the most such games in franchise history

Your total contempt and hatred for Baker Mayfield has absolutely no facts to stand on and your comments are irrelevant

  73. OrlandoBucFAn Says:

For the love of God, we don’t need a corner in the 1st round. We do have other more pressing needs, like inside offensive linemen. A receiver would be nice, as would an edge rusher. We have not had good luck in that department in the draft, but I would take one with our top three draft picks. I would also not push back on a tight end. Good tight ends make a big difference. We just don’t have one right now (sorry Cade, you’re not that man).

  74. GhostofBrady Says:

    Joe’s Article Says:
“If Mayfield is still lighting things up, you have one helluva trade-chip insurance policy on the bench, though there’s little or no history on the trade value of a backup QB that hasn’t played.”

I think you just answered your own question – No. Drafting a benchwarmer with injury issues or praying for a Dak or Brock is not worthy of a round 1 – 4 pick. Just because you draft them that high, doesn’t mean you get anything close in that value back. Especially if they don’t play much or play well. Trey Lance, Mitch Biscuit, Justin Fields and many others were worth a lot less than their draft position. Licht has never drafted a winning QB. Stick to what you know – drafting CBs, Safeties, WRs, DLs and LBs. Heck, I’d rather draft a RB in the 4th round than a QB. There’s a lot more productive RBs between round 2 – 5 then there has ever been QBs.

  75. Marky Mark Says:

Coen coached Baker and Wolford at Rams. Trask or anyone else won,t play. We are talking practice squad. Get the ky kid Coen coached last year.

  76. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucben61. Garbage yards is easy to get which that’s what he got against the Lions now he did play good against the Eagles. But you guys call everything hate at least learn how to use the word hate. When you use the word the word means jealousy or envy . And I don’t know Baker Mayfield to be envious of him . It’s not hate when you call Baker Mayfield a average quarterback it’s the truth. I don’t think Caleb Williams will be on his 4th team in 7 years because that’s what you call a journeyman quarterback not a franchise quarterback. And let’s be honest the eagles lost to the Cardinals at the end of the season. Again garbage yards don’t count. And then he choked at the end of the game by throwing a pick that’s not hate that’s facts.

  77. Oneilbuc Says:

Ugo. In the second saints game Baker had 47 yards passing with a pick. The score was 20 -0 all the way until late in the 4th quarter. This offense didn’t score until 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter. But I guess none of that was Baker Mayfield fault even though he was the starting quarterback. One thing I know is you guys can’t even admit when he plays bad all you do is blame someone else other than Baker so really you can’t even have a honest conversation with people like y’all because it’s always some one else fault but Baker. And if someone brings up his bad play then it’s haten!! So enjoy your hall of fame average quarterback and keep making excuses for him every time he sucks because I can promise you guys are the only ones who think he’s great lol 🤣🤣!!

  78. Dave Pear Says:

Osqueelbuc – you know less about football than most of the maroons on this site and that’s saying a lot. You hated bringing Brady in because he replaced JaMiss who couldn’t even stick with the Ainfs and is now a Fecal Brown. You hated on Brady and somehow think Trashk is the answer and now hate on Baker. You must really love losing.

Go cheer for the Jets or better yet, the Browns.

  79. Esteban85 Says:

This Joe is a troll. We like Bob and would like him to stay. But we would like a legit center not a poor tackle from Notre Dame that was pushed into center because of a catastrophic injury to our top guy. You know the guy Joe? The red beast in the center that set the tone for our offense? You seem to be belligerent when speaking on Bob Hainsey and out crucial center position. What’s the problem with filling a position if need with a super talented rookie?

  80. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave Pear. Everything I said was the truth about Baker Mayfield and Brady and I know you want to give one guy all the credit for the superbowl in 2020 but you can’t if you your going to be honest. We saw Brady without AB and Gronk and he didn’t look good. And we all know what Baker Mayfield is and we played good teams he sucked. And don’t give me the eagles game and Jaguars game. Both of those teams were trending down. You just love being average just like last year a 9-8 season is like a 11-6 or 12-5 season to you. You can’t call truth hate and again if you going to use the word then use it in the right way. Haten means jealousy and envy and I don’t know one who’s jealous of Baker Mayfield or Brady. But maybe you hate Jamies because he’s black I don’t know because say what you want to say about him he’s still a rich man . Lol 🤣 🤣
