Jason Licht Had A Role In Liam Coen Hire

March 5th, 2024

New Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was grilled by the GM.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht isn’t just picking players and managing his accomplished front office team at One Buc Palace.

Licht also has a hand in coaching hires, including the replacement of recently-departed offensive coordinator Dave Canales with Liam Coen.

Licht joined the 3 and Out podcast last week and was asked about his hand in the Coen hire. Yes, Licht had a role in the process.

“[Todd Bowles] keeps lists. I keep lists with my group and we kind of compare them,” Licht said. “We brought several people in. I spent time with [each candidate]. Todd spent the majority of the time with them. But I would spend and hour, hour and a half with them as well. And then Todd and I would discuss. He relied on me to help him through the process but I want him to make the hire. One thing I love about Todd is he likes to work together and have that union with the GM.”

Joe thinks it’s cool that Bowles is so collaborative. Not every head coach wants to hear out his GM on an assistant coaching hire.

Of course, in the case of Coen, the voice of another man may have been the loudest. That would be Baker Mayfield’s endorsement of Coen, his former coach with the Rams.

Licht added that Coen has a similar philosophy to Bowles when it comes to personnel. He prefers quality players to those that fit a certain position mold or scheme.

Looks like a used car salesman

Draft a guard and a center in that order

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

I trust Licht a lot more than Bowles, so I’m happy to see they worked together. Did Licht also interview assistant coaches?

    Why isn’t
James Wilder in the RoH ?

  5. Allbuccedup Says:

I would not have Bowles hire anyone without approval. Thats just common sense.

    ———-

Still holds the all-time NFL single season record for touches at 492 in 1984 – and he didn’t need 17 games to do it.

He had 407 rushing attempts for 1544 yards and 85 receptions for 685 yards receiving that year – that is dang impressive.

That was the year that Dickerson had 2105 yards rushing, yet barely overtook Wilder in total yards from scrimmage with 2244 vs 2229.

I’d be OK with putting him in the ring, since as a kid I loved stats, it gave me something to quote, and it was a huge deal for any Buc player to be known for anything other than sucking.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

We all know that Coen actually told them he wants Rusty Wilson for his QB, and loves Trashk. It’s why Mike signed yesterday, they all really hate Baker, even though publicly everyone – every single one – raves about Baker and wanting him to be a Buccaneer.

    Can’t fix stupid.

  9. Bojim Says:

I would hope that he was involved. lol

AHAA !!! Jason Licht drops a nugget that adds to my theory regarding the sabotage committed by BA and Leftnut.

  12. Hopein1hand… Says:

Can Coen play guard? Licht remembered the Right Guard but forgot about Left guard so the run game stinks. Charles Barkley said it in a commercial back in the late ‘80s- “Anything less would be uncivilized.” Given this draft’s strengths, get Graham Barton and a big RB- there are many and let Baker and Cohen cook with that.

*Coen not Cohen- he spells it wrong

  14. BuxfaninTX Says:

“”Ring of Honor general manager” sounds a lot like “Rockstar general manager “ , who is now out of football

    “Can’t fix stupid”.

Dave Pear, that is the smartest thing you have ever said about yourself.

  16. Dewey Selmon Says:

James Wilder on had 2 seasons over 700 yards and a career 3.8 yards per carry. He made his number by sheer volume on crappy teams.

  17. David Says:

You could make a case for James Wilder, but he really had two good years and everything else was very below average. Let’s not start putting good players in the Ring of honor.
It should be reserved for the all-time greats in franchise history.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

He will be the new scapegoat for the bucs offense!!
