Is A “SOB” Better Than A “Pr!ck?”

March 22nd, 2024

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

Yes, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s comment last week that Bucs quarterback was high on the “pr!ck” scale is still being talked about with #NFLMedia circles.

One guy who was intrigued by Licht’s remark was Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier. Formerly of “Football Outsiders” (RIP) and several other publications including the New York Times, Tanier now runs his own site, “Too Deep Zone.” He wonders if being a “pr!ck” is actually a good thing for a quarterback.

Tanier believes Licht would actually prefer a SOB than a “pr!ck.” Why? Because Tanier believes a “pr!ck” would be a boss who demands his workers stay late and slave at their desks late on a Friday night — or else! — while he bolts early to hit the bars and directs Dwight Schrute to rat out whoever disobeys.

A SOB, Tanier argues, is a guy not to be tangled with.

Maybe it’s a matter of semantics, but I would much rather have a quarterback who’s a sunuvab***h than a pr!ck.

A pr!ck, as I have come to understand such individuals over the decades, is either a devious backstabber (a giant pr!ck) or a mealy-mouthed irritant (a little pr!ck). A sunuvab***h, by definition, has that dawg in him. When you’re messin’ with one, you are in trouble.

Look, Tanier is right. It is a matter of semantics. Boil it down and you want your players, offensive linemen, quarterback, receivers, whoever, to play with that nasty edge, won’t back down from anyone, and a guy you don’t want to cross paths with in a close game.

If that means Mayfield is a SOB or a pr!ck or an a-hole, whatever. Just get the job done.

    Boom

I’d rather he just be great. 🤷‍♂️

Mayfield is the guy who will light a fire under your ass when it becomes necessary. That’s a great quality to have in your QB, and all of your team leaders.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Should have just stuck with ‘Moxie”….

  5. Rod Munch Says:

I like people who are very self confident and will tell everyone about it — so long as they back it up.

And having the ball in his hands with 2 minutes left in the biggest moment of his life and immediately collapsing isn’t really my idea of backing it up. Even though I love trash talking and guys that talk – after that ending, he should probably keep his mouth shut until he does something big.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

So we went from a QB who prided himself in taking care of his body to one who hits the bars? That mid section is gonna look worse next year if so. Gonna be the only NFL team who has a prick for a QB and looks pregnant.
10 on the prick scale is definitely an adjective moniker I see coming to describe him from Joe in his future articles. As long as it’s not Americas Greatest QB Jameis Winston.
I don’t think he is a prick to his teammates at all. Unless that changes now which IMO would be bad for the team. How he goes about holding them accountable now that he has become friends will be interesting.

  7. Dave Pear Says:

Rod – how many playoff games has JaMiss started and won? How many picks has he thrown versus TDs with the Saints last few years? Why didn’t they keep him?

Who’s he starting for in 2024? Seems telling that the QB needy Broncos with his ex-coach wouldn’t touch him with bleach wipes.

Like others have said, JaMiss is the offensive version of Diva White. Splash and burn. Too often the latter to be a winning starter.

The data, results, and vast majority of professionals have all weighed in.

Baker is the reason the Bucs pulled out of their swoon and the team rallies around him. JaMiss goes rogue and attacks a defense from a victory formation, and doesn’t eat many Ws anymore.

Sorry man – that’s data based fact.

  8. Simeon4HOF Says:

It’s kinda like the 2 Joes, but which is which lol.
I’m just joking around, just being a pr!ck.
Btw Jameis sayin he that SOB in Cleveland

  9. Noles Says:

He has the most important trait as an individual. He believes in himself ‘ there is no quit in hm. Cant ask for more from a teammate. & showed during the season he is able to persevere when things were not going well. He didnt collapse he came out swinging

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

I think he is just one bad mutha F***er.

There- did that take care of it?

And having the ball in his hands with 2 minutes left

🙂 Hey nitwit. Tom Brady lost SEVEN playoff games throwing a pick. Comparison to Brady? Only you would think so nitwit.

Its just proof h even the best of them throw picks to lose games.

    So as usual you lose

  12. MadMax Says:

He called him a prick because of the contract negotiations LOL hahahaha, come on now. But he’s well worth it at what I said to bring him in at and then what I said to keep him.

Now lets focus on this C Jackson Powers situation and be done with the O line so we can give the prick a little more time to throw the ball lol….and help open some holes for our new RB Estime.

And no hate on Hainsey, he’s doing all he can, no dis at all from me. I say start him at LG so he can help the new C … and the guys we signed are good backups

I remember wanting Marpet and Wirfs….eh, its all good.

  13. MadMax Says:

and Landon Dickerson when we passed on him for pass non rush JTS…. Jason knows I wont let him live that one down lol….its in the archives from back then.

  14. Pfffffft Says:

Jason certainly meant it as a compliment but it was a poor choice of words. As soon as he said it he probably had one of those “wanna get away” moments. Should have just called him a dawg.

  15. Show Me the TDs Says:

From what I heard in Cleveland and from the non-productuve smirk on his face, he seems more like a douche, but hey, I’m not in the locker room.

  16. Show Me the TDs Says:

From what I heard in Cleveland and from the non-productuve smirk on his face, he seems more like a dooshe, but hey, I’m not in the locker room. Had to misspell to get it past the AI censors. 😉

  17. Conner50 Says:

Hope he don’t get the bag and fall off a cliff

  18. Steve Says:

What an annoying article. If Jason Licht says he’s a pr!ck and means it as a complement. Why would this guy take the time to dispute what pr!ck means to him. Jason Licht has been very clear how he feels about Baker’s personality and what he brings, and every bit of that description comes with those things that the guy says about an SOB. Why pick hairs to make a point that Licht has already been since made. Is it that boring of a time in the offseason?

  19. stpetebucfan Says:

Seriously a request for trolls or troll wannabe’s.

Can we stop extrapolating any career or talent inferences from a SINGLE FREAKING PLAY!!!!

YES!!! The Lions game featured TWO HORRIBLE PLAYS by the Bucs 2 offensive STARS! ME’s volleyball effort, mocked by some other reputable NFL receivers, turned interception was awful…and yes Baker’s desperation toss was bad.

And so we can continue to waste our time trying to make OVERALL points with INDIVIDUAL examples or just comprehend Forrest Gump was right…”Stuff happens!”

As for SOB versus Prick…I do not care as long as “moxie” is retired!

How about plain English…”FIERCELY COMPETITIVE!” You could then add self confident, highly motivated, attention to details…yadda yadda but what makes Baker special is that he LEADS BY EXAMPLE. He does not ask anything from his teammates he is not willing to lay on the line himself.

Tom Brady IS the GOAT. He got his respect in a different manner…SUCCESS!!!

But think the OL didn’t love the times Baker lowered his head and converted 3rd to 1st with his legs and yes his ‘NADS!!!

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

It seems to me Jason got LOTS of press for his interview using that word. WTG.

  21. Hunter Says:

Nothing says “offseason” more than this post lmao

  22. Bucben61 Says:

Tony marks…rod doesn’t like when someone points out relevant facts and I have no doubt his shallow self will be posting again that Baker cost the Bucs the season
with his game ending interception…crap happens…the greats like Brady pick their selves up and go on and I’m sure Baker will too

He deserves some credit for the the bucs success last season? Listening to some of the posters here they just want to a positive and turn it negative. Go bucs!!!!!

  23. Irishmist Says:

One would seem to be dependent on the other.

  24. Esteban85 Says:

    Semantics

  25. Lakeland Steve Says:

It doesn’t matter if he is a prick, SOB, or a little bitch. Just as long as the Bucs have more points on the scoreboard than the other team at the end of the game.

  26. westernbuc Says:

His examples are just people with low character. SOB works too. Mayfield is a pr!ck in the same sense that Ryan Jensen was or Brady or any of the other ultra competitive dudes are. They’re going to unpleasantly competitive until they win the game. This is a good thing

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Oh goodness the Bakerflufferbois are besides themselves. Force feed them with a sling shot
