Baker Mayfield Effort “Resonates”

March 27th, 2024

So how beloved is Baker Mayfield among Buccaneers fans?

Joe can’t say Mayfield is loved across the board. He is well liked, absolutely, but there is no gotta-have-a-Baker-jersey groundswell of extreme allegiance. Yeah, Mayfield has some doubters, a group largely fueled by his pre-Tampa struggles and/or an undying devotion to former Florida Gators star turned Bucs backup QB Kyle Trask.

Mayfield has one Bucs season under his belt, so it’s understandable that he hasn’t reached hero status from Largo to Lakeland yet as a franchise quarterback.

Team Glazer addressed Mayfield fandom yesterday with the official Buccaneers website. Co-owner Joel Glazer lauded the Mayfield addition and says he feels how Mayfield’s efforts have captured Bucs fandom.

“Baker came in and getting involved in the team, again, the community, fitting in, leading. Really, just Baker always does, gives 150 percent, and I think that resonates will all our fans, community,” Glazer said.

Joe loves Mayfield’s fire and effort, but that’s not unique in football and it isn’t something on its own that gets Joe hot in the pants.

Just keeping it real … Joe doesn’t see Mayfield trying harder than most quarterbacks in Bucs history. But Mayfield played excellent football last year, and that’s what gets Joe excited.

If Mayfield’s 2024 looks like his 2023, Joe will guarantee Mayfield’s immediate ownership of the fan base.

Waiting for Trashk to the Stupid to come up with another ignorant post.

Then wait. Although I am not one I can say without question that you beat them to the punch with an Ignorant One of your Own?

  4. stpetebucfan Says:

I agree that it’s not based soley on effort or that other QB’s didn’t try as hard.

But it’s football! People respect courage. There have been some clear differences in “cojones”. Mike Glennon is the ultimate example…stepping out of bounds a yard shy of the first down stick. But others including both SB winning Buc QB’s have certainly “protected” themselves.

The wisdom of so much courage is up for debate and I’m not calling Brad or Brady cowards as much as suggesting they were a lot more “judicious” in their use of their bodies.

Ironically the guy who exhibited that same courage was JW. But Fameis never grew up in time. Baker has his moments in college as well and early in his pro career he just grew up from the experience.

Who knows maybe Fameis has finally gotten the message and ends up with the Jets and becomes a real NFL QB.

  5. Boss Says:

The courage and “cojones” is the part of bake I do respect.

The reading the D is not one…and CG and his wife would agree.

Hope he can learn that this year.

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

I think Baker is really competitive and hates to lose. He will stiff arm defenders while taking a hit to run for a first down. When he shows that courage, and he supports his team mates on and off the field, that behavior lifts the play of the team.

He needs to read defenses better and stop throwing late down the middle. A run game that makes play-active effective will help a lot, and pass protection in the interior line will help him.

  7. Capt. Tim Says:

Im glad to have Mayfield as our QB.
    Is he perfect? Nope.
But I saw an amazing with him last year.

This team had read the predictions. They knew they were expected to be in last place in the division.
Alot of our “star” players had already quit on the team. They still played, but they were playing it safe. Not risking injury. Not going all out. They though that last year was just a lost year.
Dont get hurt. Next year will be a new coach and new QB.

But Mayfield was playing hard. He was playing to win NOW.
First he rallied the young guys. By Mid season, all the Vets were on board.
He made them believe that they WOULD be winners this year.
Suddenly, guys were running crossing routes again. Fighting for first downs,
Extra effort to sto the other team. Playing thru injuries.

Doing the things that winning teams do.

This was a bad team last year. Last in rushing offense. Last in TE production.
    29th in pass defense.
O-line was a train wreck. Wirfs switched from RT to LT. Goedeke switched from guard to RT.
Backup at Center, Back up at Left Guard.
    Rookie at Right Guard.
Mayfield got them to play their best.
    It was amazing to watch.

The guy is Special. You can just see it. And he was MADE for Tampa!
Tough, a fighter. An underdog who wins despite the odds.
Yeah, He’ll own this town soon. He practically does now!

  8. Ballwin Bucs Fan Says:

Wow Capt. Tim. When you lay it all out like that, you’re right. Mayfield really did have a medicore team really overachieve. What more could you want from a player than raising the level of everyone around him?

  9. Hodad Says:

Another Baker fluff piece. We get it already Joe, he’s the best.

  10. Bucben61 Says:

I hate it for the naysayers…can’t enjoy a good thing that’s right in front of them

Baker and the bucs are going up…phenomenal year last year and hopefully even better this one

  11. Capt.Tim Says:

Im really just waiting on the haters, to get this conversation cooking!

  12. pmarcello Says:

Just watched Mad Dog trashing Baker while hyping all these kid saviors.

I think that is great. We have one of the best young QBs in the the game and as usual the main stream fake news is trashing Baker and the Bucs while still missing the obvious. I can just see Bake and his friends stewing over all this persistent disrespect.

What a strategic advantage. The league won’t know what hit them until about mid season when they see the Bucs plowing trough their over hyped darlings.

  13. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Baker is perfect for this type of team!!! He suffered through Lots of dropped passes last year!! He did his part and even more. He did not allow all the rif raff and Trask lovers to bother his style of play, he’s the real deal. Go Bucs!!

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

C+ to B- talent, A+ intangibles. I am not a huge Bowles fan nor was I sold on Baker however what not even the staunchest occult of Trask members / BakerBowles haters could argue is that the players love playing for those guys.

  15. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Taking a flyer on a QB with a trashed background and having that guy play almost every down and take the team to 2 wins short of a SB took guts and good judgement. Got to give a hand to JL and TB for this. Now it’s time to realize what we have with Mayfield. And, it’s not bad.

  16. JD Still Says:

Hate has nothing to do with it. What resonates with real Bucs fans are results , not effort, everybody makes an effort , more or less, but sub.500 wins isn’t going to cut it no matter how much effort is put into something or how much love his rabid sycophants have for the guy.

  17. LANshark Says:

I’m getting tired of pointing this out. Everyone looks at the overall record and thinks Baker is average or a bit above at best. Let’s look at reality…

Before Baker in Cleveland, that team was 4-44 (.083 win percentage) from 2015-2017. From Baker’s start in 2018 (3rd game – first 2 losses are on Taylor) through 2020…he’s 24-21-1 (.500 win percentage). ASSUMING that’s all on the QB, he’s responsible for increasing the winning percentage by .417…

That is NOT an average QB. That is a QB who lifted his team up.

Of course, we all know that the QB is not 100% responsible for all wins and losses, but when some ‘m*r*ns’ here want to use his overall record to knock him, well you can make stats say anything you want.

  18. White Tiger Says:

Sub .500 wins? You got playoff level results from a team that was picked to win 6 games max – with a rookie & back up’s at 3 of the 5 line spots, no running game and weak TE play, and a defense that played with huge holes in the secondary!

Baker fits this team, we knew the line was in transition. It was originally built for an immobile QB, and the best case scenario was it could be re-tooled with a more mobile QB. One, just one, was available. That ONE performed lights out! Is there flaws in his game? Absolutely. Just like 85% to 90% of ALL QB’s not named Mahomes.

Brad Johnson did really well winning a Super Bowl because the TEAM was solid – and the defense was stellar. The offense can be solid by upgrading the INTERIOR line (in a deep iOL draft), and a complementary RB – and the defense can become stellar by adding an edge & CB, early.

The defensive additions from last year will be taking a huge step forward – I’m more enthusiastic about our prospects next year than I have been since the GOAT was signed!

Baker fits this town – and this scheme/personnel – perfectly!

  19. Gipper Says:

Just get Baker a serious Center, LG, and hopefully a stronger Mauch and you will see a spectacular Year 2 from Baker. I am thinking close to 40TD and 12Int. Team finishes 11-6 and makes some playoff noise. Would help if defense can get offense more possessions. Allowed too many 7.5 minute drives last year and not enough turnovers.

  20. NYbucsfan Says:

I think Baker played okay but the reason I’m not jumping on the bandwagon quite yet is because he had two games in December against division opponents that he did not complete 50% of his passes. I’m not sure how you can just overlook those games. And they were in December it’s not like it was the first quarter of the season it was nearing the end when we were fighting for a playoff spot.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

Wow. I hope these posters are under 25-years old… Much closer to 14, really!? I have NEVER seen soooo much ‘LOVE’ before, especially for a professional ATHLETE. It is really unbelievable. And just imagine being a fan of ANOTHER team (“Cleveland”), & your undying LOVE for a (QB/player) is just soooo MUCH, that you would ‘follow him’ around wherever he goes like that, while ‘creeping’ OTHER teams websites/blogs/message boards/etc. literally, at all hours of the day. It is just mind-blowing to me. Thank-God, I can honestly say that I have NEVER done that. I mean, they are ALL out in FULL effect… And, immediately. Sorry, I just cannot comprehend it. I mean, he’s ok. That’s all. We’ll see what happens this season with how he plays, etc. But, throwing around phrases such as “He’s Special” & “OWNS The City” and all that… I Mean. Come. ON.

  22. MelvinJunior Says:

I mean, I could at least understand some of the ‘old-time’ NE Fans following the Bucs bc of Brady, but you’re talking about BRADY and ‘6-Super Bowls’ & 20-YEARS!!!! I get that. And I prob would too, in the very beginning, mostly just to see what he says about his old team (MY team), the guys, FO, rumors, etc. But, then by the time the season has started I’m movin’ on.

  23. Bucben61 Says:

Jd stills..what results do you want

Division title and a playoff victory

You just sound like a bitter individual who wouldn’t be happy no matter what Baker accomplished

  24. View from 132 Says:

He’s the starting QB. I don’t have to love him to hope he has success. It’s a team sport. Are many of us convinced he’s a top 10 NFL QB? No, we aren’t. But that doesn’t mean we hate the guy.

  25. MelvinJunior Says:

Seriously, what is it about him!? Does he remind you of yourself, your kid, the kid you never had? What is it about BAKER, that would make you process this kind of hardcore, everlasting loooove for??? And, I mean so much so, that ANY ‘hint’ of anything being construed as a ‘negative’ comment towards him, then you are absolutely, losing YOUR MIND… And that person is immediately, labeled as being a “TRASHK-LOVER.” Over just the littlest, simplest thing. So, why is that? It’s really unbelievable.

  26. Beeej Says:

What evidence is there that he can’t read defenses?

  27. MelvinJunior Says:

I seriously, wonder if these are a few of Bakers “buddies” from back in the day, (&/or) possibly just family members!? LoL

  28. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

I doubt he regresses. When the coach plays to his strengths (Stefanski, McVay, Canales) and he isn’t beat up, you see a year like 2020 and 2023. I believe the offense will start out faster this year; similar system and Coen actually has experience calling plays. A big part of last year learning curve was more Canales than the players

  29. Dave Pear Says:

DConehead, too bad the soft spot on your head never fully grew in. There’s probably a helmet you could use that would mitigate the brain damage.

  30. Randall DeSear Says:

I certainly appreciate mayfield. He came in following Tom Brady’s departure. It’s pretty hard to follow up on a guy like that but, I think he’s doing a fantastic job so far. Get us into the playoffs again. I honestly think that we have a shot I get into the title game this year and winning.

  31. BakerBucs says Says:

Yo buddy as soon as we r sub 500 for the season I will show no bitter bs just keep winning & the haters will be obsolete they pretty much r now anyway what a waist of fake commentary by a bunch of cry babies keep it up u b good at nothing

  32. Obvious Says:

    Again?

Who else can we talk about though? I suppose we’re circling back around in to get some Mayfield medicine.

But doesn’t the medicine bottle read “as needed”? We maybe over dosing….

  33. oldSunnyBuc Says:

Love Baker, but I do wish he would lose the Rose colored shield on his helmet. It looks lik he is flushed with it on. Or, maybe having a heat stroke.

  34. DBS Says:

MelvinJunior. It’s unleavable you are acting like a 15 year old school girl that just had her first boy friend dump her and losing your mind over this. If it bothers you that much don’t read it and you won’t get flustered. Move on.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

Obvious – I guess Joe could talk about how Trashk processes his reads at the speed of smell and stares down his primary target until he’s sacked or throws the ball into a defender’s chest. Maybe we could touch on how his pocket presence makes Mike Glennon look like Tom Brady. That would be something for the irrational Trashk cult.

  36. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Slow news day?

  37. Bucben61 Says:

MelvinJunior….you might seriously want to think about medication…all that anger is not healthy

  38. MelvinJunior Says:

“Bucsben61” – there is zero “anger.” Just a legitimate question. Case in point, someone posted earlier, that they just saw/heard “Maddog” TRASH Baker While Talking Up Other Young QB’s” or something like that. Well, He Did NOT. Absolutely NO Such Thing. I actually ‘DVR’ed’ the repeat episode since I’d had the first-one going on in the background & never heard such a thing. So, after re-watching the segment, here is exactly what HE SAID… “He Is Ok. He Is A NICE Player.” And, they were really talking about J.J. McCarthy to begin with. Maddog (who honestly, can be VERY tough and unfair to modern day athletes), plainly stated that “He Is NOT A Top-10 QB.” Then, BOTH Ryan Clark AND Danny-O (who depending on what day it is has at LEST ‘16-QBs’ in his TOP-10 LoL.), ALL AGREED with him without even a hesitation. NEXT, Dan says, what about TOP-12 and Maddog pausing, says I DON’T KNOW, I Would Have To ‘Think’ About That!!!! Now, HOW… In Who’s World Is That “TRASHING!?” It’s unbelievable. Maddog spoke THE TRUTH! It is what it is. He is a nice player, right now. He is OK. Just chill and we’ll see what happens.

  39. pmarcello Says:

    Bucben61

Sorry dude he was back handing Bake by using the same old lame and untrue arguments So they damn him with faint praise .Bake broke into top ten last year by taking this team to the divisional round. Ryan Clark doesn’t know what he is talking about and thinks he is hiding his bias but Dan didn’t really agree with them. He is more tuned into how sharp Baker has become just like Baker’s team mates and coach s have caught on and the fake news is always last to agree. Baker is really ready to blossom this year. A true franchise QB happens when natural talent and IQ blend with game experience at the same time the QB achieves a professional maturity and confidence. I like the Bucs chances this year.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
There isn’t any evidence that Baker can’t read defenses. It is just something that stupid people say to make themselves sound smart. Few fans watching a game on TV can even tell what defense is being played. Anyone watching the backfield shot on TV doesn’t have the slightest idea of a defense other than press coverage.

  42. Let em bake Says:

then you are absolutely, losing YOUR MIND

Dude….. Only person I see losing their mind is you. Five posts basically ranting at people over and over for being fans of one of the team’s players. Tomorrow try not skipping a dose.

  44. Cometowin2 Says:

Just picked up ticket for Bucs to win SB at 66 to 1. Previously picked up ticket to win the division at 3 to 1 and NFC Championship at 30 to 1. Even if they just win the division will double my money.

Last year had them winning the division at 9 to 1 and the over on games won. Won those and most of the individual games I bet on. Parleyed those to a win in a poker tourney and profits in cash games. Have a nice little bankroll now.

  45. Davyboy Says:

I’ll tell you why Melvin, Baker is a winner. He took a team that had the worst 3 year stretch in nfl history 4-44 to 11-5. He lifted the play at Oklahoma the same way. He was the first walk on in NCAA history to win the Heisman. He took a team last year that was supposed to win 4 games 2 deep into the playoffs. He is going to help this team be even better next year. He’s a winner and a fighter and if you can’t respect that than why are you on a football site? Or you just don’t like Baker because of what he did to your team in college. Who knows but rest assured we will continue to back Baker even if it bugs you. No no, he played 4 nfl games with fractured shoulder, that’s why we defend him. And if you can’t see that, well…. not to mention most of the negative things said here simply isn’t true.

  46. Marky Mark Says:

Well here is how you overlook the last two games. .. ELite playoff numbrrs.

  47. Chris Says:

@Melvin, the main reason I root so hard for Mayfield is because of people like Shannon Sharpe and Joy, and Marcellus Wiley, and previously Colin Cowherd. Shannon goes into a full blow hate filled conniption fit at the mere mention of his name. Lesean McCoy is another guy that hates him and NEVER has an unbiased take.

I also enjoyed watching him in College, and then bravely accepted the #1 pick to play QB in a cold, windy, outdoor stadium for a team that had been awful for several years. He took the job and made no excuses. Archie Manning would have told Peyton and Eli to demand a trade immediately.

Add to that the talent and perseverance along with the humble pie he’s had to eat, and I don’t see what’s not to like.

  55. Davyboy Says:

Just in case it escaped your consciousness, again Rod, Mahomes passer rating in last years playoffs was 100.3. Bakers 106.3. Best in the league. And I think Mahomes is considered by many as the best qb in the NFL. Old Clutch!!! LMAO

CORRECTION: Baker had the 5th best passer rating last year in the playoffs.

    ————

Literally only retards talk about the old outdated passer rating.

In QBR, which actually takes into account WHEN you make plays, he was 10th, out of 14th – and the lowest rated QB who played more than one game. So in the playoffs, he didn’t even live up to his middling nickname.

  60. Davyboy Says:

Actually Rod, only a retard would think Tampa Bay would pay a qb $100 million that can’t read defenses.😂
DATA CRUNCH says Baker ranks 4th among active qb’s passer rating in the playoffs, 4th among ACTIVE qb’s.
To add insult to injury, the average passer rating from the last 10 years of the qb’s who WON the superbowl was 85.5. Bakers career is 100.4. Plenty good enough to take his team to a superbowl, which you said he couldnt, Rod.
Additionally, out of 250 qb’s in college old Clutch ranks 7th. That’s in the top 3%. In other words, elite.

  61. Marky Mark Says:

If talent was enough in the NFL johannes Foosball would roll out dRunk and dominate. Penix has jff type talent but that does not guarantee anything in the nfl. Effort matters in this league.
