Tom Brady Vs. Patrick Mahomes: Blaine Gabbert Explains

February 11th, 2024

Answer to great trivia question.

One of these days, if not already, former Bucs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert is going to be an answer to a great sports bar question.

Q. Name the quarterback who backed up both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

A. Blaine Gabbert.

From 2020-2022 Gabbert backed up Brady with the Bucs. This season, Gabbert backed up Mahomes.

Some NFL observers think Mahomes is encroaching on Brady’s status as greatest ever. He’s close. (And Joe Montana watches from afar chuckling how he’s never thrown a pick in four Super Bowls, much less lost one. Brady and Mahomes can’t say that.)

When Joe crossed paths with Gabbert on Super Bowl Opening Night at the Raiders’ Roomba, Joe asked Gabbert to compare the two.

In reality, Gabbert said the two have more in common than most realize, even though Brady was a classic dropback passer whereas Mahomes can burn defenses with his feet as well as his arm, inside and outside the pocket.

“They are two of the best who every played,” Gabbert said. “They play the game in two different ways and they see the game in two different ways. “They are both phenomenal in their own right.

“It has been a privilege for me to play with both of those guys. And see what greatness really looks like. You know, greatness comes in many ways, shapes and forms. Patrick and Tom are such unique players. They don’t come around very often. At all.

“I have been fortunate enough to be with both of them. Anything I have been able to do to help them, in any way, shape or form the past four or five years, it’s been an honor. I really enjoyed it.”

Gabbert said there is one common denominator between the two, outside of winning, is that they are rock solid consistent.

“Their consistency day in and day out,” Gabbert said of their similarities. “How they approach the game. Good or bad, win, lose or draw. The focus they come in with week in and week out. How much they enjoy being around the guys.

“That is something I wished I could have seen early on in my career.”

When Joe asked Gabbert if he had a chance to go to another team if he had a shot to be a starting quarterback if he is now a better quarterback for being associated with Brady and Mahomes for the past four years. Gabbert quickly said, “Absolutely” he is.

“You always learn from the guys that you are around,” Gabbert said. “I just happened to be around two of the best ever. You always pick up on things from people you play with. It doesn’t have to be quarterbacks, it could be anybody. It could be a tight end or an offensive lineman.

“You just kind of pick up things and take bits and pieces of what people use to play the game.”

Who knows how long Gabbert will continue to play? He turns 35 later this year. And while his career didn’t turn out the way the former first-round pick had hoped or planned, his name will linger in neighborhood bars in Florida, Missouri and maybe in New England too for years to come for his direct connection to two ultimate football legends.

Gabbert is Brady’s guy he was at his retirement party. You knew better than to ask Blaine to pick between the two

  2. Dew Says:

Just realized Travis Kelce is older than Lavonta David.

  3. BucVoyager Says:

Gabbert will probably become a great coach because of those guys.

  4. Jack Clark Says:

The only quarterback Tom Brady has a losing record to is Eli Manning

  5. The Truth be Told Says:

Can do without the Guys kissing ad. Thx

  6. stpetebucfan Says:

I like Gabbert’s answer. He didn’t pick one! As they say different strokes for different folks. TB and Mahomes obviously play the game differently with just one common denominator. They both WIN!!!

The league has changed dramatically in the past few decades. The Cap means the end of any long term dynasties which makes Mahomes/Andy Reid’s achievements that much more meaningful.

I’m not sure there is a place anymore for a pure drop back passer anymore than a smashmouth John Riggins, Larry Csonka style runner. Maybe Derrick Henry?

I googled larger rb’s available in nfl draft and just kept getting the overall pics.

Perhaps HUGE backs are no longer valued? There are so many QB’s and WR’s going early that a very good RB should drop to the Bucs in the 2nd round. I like Corum who is only 5-8″ but 215 lbs more an Emmitt Smith kind of runner.

FSU guys…Trey Benson is picked right up there with Corum is he as good? Can Nole faithful forgive him for bailing early? Is he worth a 2nd round pick?

Bottom line is that there are some good RB’s who will probably drop to the Bucs round. Grab one to augment White, Edmonds is a great 3rd addition to the RB room if he’s affordable.

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Stpete – Braellon Allen or Audric Estime would be a great complement to White. I hope there’s some way the Bucs get 4 picks in the first three rounds this year to make it happen. I’d go OL, EDGE, RB, and ILB.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Where are the guys kissing?

  9. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

And people think we will ever win anything more than a playoff game or two with never been consistently good Mr. Winsome Losesome??? Keep hope alive ! 😴

  10. stpetebucfan Says:

    A Bucs Fan

I check those two out. I’m really uninformed when it comes to college players.
I just happened to see several of Michigan’s games because I’ve always admired Harbaugh, had a summer home in Michigan and I thought the Mich-OSU games and that title game with Bama were awesome…unless you’re a Bama fan.

And wow that Braellon Allen is a beast! 6-2 245!!! You might be on to something there. Could it be a revival of Thunder and Lightning? Alstott also came from a decent but not great Big Ten program.

And I go with your draft picks… OL, EDGE, RB, and ILB. Since Calijah and YaYa have shown the ability to get pressure I might go BPA Edge/RB then BPA RB/edge.
in those middle rounds. But if they draft solid guys at the positions you mention I’d be happy.

  11. Proudbucsfan Says:

Hey Joe, I’m with Truth Be Told. The AD with the guys kissing is ridiculous. IMO to each his own. I personally don’t like it shoved down our throats it’s really hard to deal with in today’s age. I’m 47 and I know that it’s just going to get worse in society but please JBF is my sanctuary.

  12. HC Grover Says:

It hurts when all these ex Bucs get shots at another SB ring.

  18. McBucky Says:

    There were guys kissing?

  19. MadMax Says:

Its everywhere guys, it sucks. I just try to turn my eyes away fast as possible. I remember new years night last month, im home thinking maybe i’ll try one of the lib stations showing the ball dropping, and what do they do right as the ball drops? immediately cut to two guys sucking face sharing aids….yeah im never doing that again lol….

  20. Joe Says:

    Gabbert >>>>>>>>> Trask

Anyone who watched practices could see that.

  21. Tony marks Says:

“Who knows how long Gabbert will continue to play? He turns 35 later this year. I think you are right. Only if you are fully liquored up would you bring it up or even care.

  22. Beeej Says:

Eagles gave permission for Reddick to seek a trade, would love to have that guy

  23. BillyBucco Says:

It won’t be long until we see a President kissing his guy wife.
It’s already being shoved down our throats.
You can hardly watch a show or movie anymore without seeing it.
Because it is socially acceptable we HAVE to have it?
There is a fine line being drawn in the sand lately and I will gladly stand on the right side till the bitter end.
Kids being “Raised” in these families don’t have a chance.
Please let’s keep it to FOOTBALL.

  24. Usfbucs Says:

Not seeing the ad people above are talking about, maybe it’s an ad being served to you based on your search history?

  25. Beeej Says:

There have been some ads I tried to complain to google to get ride of (doesn’t work, btw, click all you want) It said right on there:

“Ad personalization is off. Google showed this ad based on general factors like:
    The time of day
    The website you’re on
Your general location (like your country or city)”

All I use is Chrome with Duck Duck Go

  26. Buccanstopit Says:

    Usfbucs

or where they live, St Pete?

  27. UKBuccaneer Says:

No guys kissing ad here. Not that it matters, I think the human race has passed the point where that’s a big deal, right?

  28. Mika_Sati Says:

The kissing ad is 100% based off search history and related cookies. There’s a whole bunch of boomer’s telling on themselves. The internet is designed to show you more of what you search for.

  29. Beeej Says:

What I typed got eaten up by the filter, I’ll try again. I click on the blue X on various ads (not THIS site) to give feedback–it invariably says the ads are personalized, but they’re a mashup of the web site, time of day, etc (mostly news and sports sites in my case)

  30. Beeej Says:

NOT personalized, wish we could edit

  31. #99 the big fella Says:

I searched 2 guys kissing and I found stuck and mika_sati kissing..
Very strange that these two would tell on themselves.

  32. #99 the big fella Says:

    Usfbucs and mika_sati kissing

  33. DBS Says:

“We love everything Kyle has done and he’s gotten leaps and bounds better than he has in the spring and he’s continuing to get better and we’re excited about him,” Bowles said. “Baker’s our guy right now, experience-wise and understanding the playbook just a little bit better. But Kyle’s on the come. We like both guys. We like where we’re at. Baker’s No. 1; Kyle’s No. 2.”

Sorry you Traskies can’t accept that Trask was not as far along in the playbook. Nor did he have the experience the coaches wanted at the time. Now there it is in Black and White again. And robbie boi once again .

  34. GhostofBrady Says:

What is there to compare. Brady beat Mahomes both times they met in the playoffs. The AFC Conference Championship and Super Bowl. Mahomes only had to beat Garrapolo. And some would say the refs screwed Jalen Hurt of an opportunity to have comeback in the last one.

Mahomes is the ultimate hero ball player. Brady is the ultimate field general corodinating his team to victory. You can win with both and both are entertaining to watch. I suspect generationally, the less young prefer a team effort with key leadership. The young are more into the NBA style of playing where it’s one star balling , a couple of sidekicks and no one else matters. I don’t find that very satisfying. It’s more like watching professional wrestling than a well-done movie.

  35. firethecannons Says:

Joe who do you want to win?

  36. Jimbob Says:

    D Smith just got schooled

  37. Jmarkbuc Says:

Lynch really has built a great D.

    Brings back memories…

  38. Rusty Shackleford Says:

@ JMARKBUCS: So far, this game looks a lot like 55.

  39. Beeej Says:

MAYBE if Mahomes wasn’t making $50 mil a year they could have found some decent linemen and receivers. They look like Brady’s last year with the Pats

  40. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Speaking of Super Bowl winning QB’s, Jim Plunkett, Phil Simms, and Joe Theismann need to go into the HOF.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

This game is dull as hell, and these commercials are truly horrifically lame and uninteresting.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

The commercials aren’t interesting enough for God to take notice.

  43. Beeej Says:

Well that last one wasn’t on Donnie

  44. DBS Says:

I thought elite QB’S were supposed to put 50 points on the board by halftime!

  45. Mike C Says:

Joe Bucs fans would be calling to bench Pat right now….

  46. Rusty Shackleford Says:

If CMC is the MVP, then I am going to laugh at David Tepper. What a bonehead poser.

  47. Mike C Says:

Rusty, you are the worst kind of “sky is falling ” earth has been ending since it started…. simmer down with all the fire and brimstone. Your fairy tale is not believable.

  48. Rusty Shackleford Says:

    Go see your gynecologist, Mike.

  49. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Travis Kelce screams at Andy Reid and pushes him. Also, Travis Kelce:

“I think the values we stand for and just who we are as people — we love to shine light on others, shine light on the people that help and support us, and on top of that, I think we both just love life.”

    What a poser, lol.

  50. Rod Munch Says:

I know it’s the thing to do to complain about the halftime show – but this is terrible.

  51. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The only halftime show that wasn’t a complete satanic abomination was when Paul McCartney classed up the joint in Jacksonville years ago (2005).

  52. Rod Munch Says:

I never realized until now that Usher is a gay man. Also that top he was wearing, looked like someone my grandma wore in 1983 – I mean almost exactly.

  53. Rusty Shackleford Says:

I’m proud to say that I have heard even one “song” from whoever this heathen is. I am also proud to say that I have listened to every song Zeppelin, Ween, Skynyrd, and the Doors has ever done.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

There is no way anyone likes this garbage halftime show and thinks it’s good. I’m not even talking about the music, just the actual show. This is really poorly done.

I’ve been to Vegas many times, and this would, by far, be the worst thing I’ve ever seen there.

  55. Greg Says:

Well, one thing is certain. Super Bowl half times are just the purest examples of everything wrong with our society. I have no problem with Usher per se, but the bs surrounding him… it’s just tacky. Roller skates? It’s everything wrong with Vegas on full display. Ugh.

  56. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Proud to say I’ve never been to Vegas in my life and I never will.

  57. Rod Munch Says:

Greg – No one in Vegas is on roller skates, unless they’re hot 20-year old chicks like in Boogie Nights.

No, that was just an exceptionally bad halftime show. I can’t think of one that was worse than

  58. Since76 Says:

The halftime show wasnt good. NFL is on a bad run with it’s shows. Time to have a entertaining show and less of people who scream look at me. Just bad.

  59. Rod Munch Says:

They were in Vegas and could have had a bunch of showgirls come out and dance behind an Elvis impersonator, that would have literally been 1-billion times better than that trash.

Also stop with the stupid garbage of putting some ‘hype’ crowd around the middle of the field – it looks so stupid.

  60. Rusty Shackleford Says:

When Trump is back in office next year, the halftime show will be a MAGA rally and the execution of deep state leftists.

  61. Rusty Shackleford Says:

When Trump is back in office next year, the halftime show will be a MAGA rally and the execution of leftist traitors.

  62. Rusty Shackleford Says:

When Orange Man is back in charge next year, the halftime show will be the execution of leftist traitors.

  63. Rusty Shackleford Says:

    Forty Whiners with the pick!

  64. Rod Munch Says:

Mahomes doing his best ‘Baker with 2 minutes left in a playoff game’ routine.

  65. DBS Says:

Ha Ha Ha. If this was the Bucs open thread you know what would be happening right now if that was Mayfield so far.

  66. Rusty Shackleford Says:

I’m tellin ya’, this game is very similar to Super Bowl 55. Mahomes under pressure, front four getting good pressure, mixing up coverage confusing Mahomes, NFC opponent running the ball well, LB’s keeping Kelce in check.

    Sound familiar ?

  67. Mike C Says:

    OK boomer

  68. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Ok boomer = I’ve lost the argument so I will act like a mewling quim.

  69. Mike C Says:

Yeah, cause go see a gyno just made you the champ lol go to bed grampa it is your bed time.

  70. Rusty Shackleford Says:

    Cry it all out, ballsniffer.

  71. Mike C Says:

And what argument? I said you have a unbelievable fairytale as your belief structure….. no “argument ” to be had.

  72. Mike C Says:

    Good one!

  73. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Forty Whiner Fans are starting to have a meltdown. I mean, you have CMC and great field position and you don’t even run it once ?

  74. Beeej Says:

Chiefs looking a LOT like the Bucs all game–Mahomes can’t do much, usually gets chased before he can go thru his reads

  75. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Forty Whiners had a prime shot to put this game under their control and they tossed it away due to awful play calling. When you get in to the Super Bowl, you HAVE to seize the opportunity and this is why the 49ers have lost three straight winnable SB opportunities.

  76. Rod Munch Says:

We’re now getting commercials for adult wet wipes.

The world really is turning into Idiocracy.

  77. Rusty Shackleford Says:

    BRAWNDO! IT’S WHAT PLANTS CRAVE!

  78. Beeej Says:

Purdy has all day (MOST of the time) to throw

  79. Beeej Says:

Pacheco hits the hole SOOOO much faster then RW

  80. Rod Munch Says:

Beeej – So did Michael Pittman, and he sucked.

  81. Beeej Says:

OOOOhhhh…let’s see what $60 million man can do

  82. Rod Munch Says:

Just think if the Bucs had a QB that could deliver at the end of a playoff game.

  83. Beeej Says:

AND…..it’s on $60 million man yet again

  84. Beeej Says:

Imagine if Mahomes had Evans to throw to

  85. Beeej Says:

    NOT too shabby

  86. DBS Says:

Mahomes is human and can be handled. As long as we see you get a lead and the defense does not cough it up.

  87. Mike C Says:

Well….. Bucs got a win against Pat in the SB, guess that means something these days.

  88. gp Says:

    Beeej
    Bite yer tongue!

  89. Beeej Says:

I never realized until now that Usher is a gay man.
    —————-
Some guy sued Usher for giving him a venereal disease. And!!! He’s one of P diddys protégés.

  91. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jason Licht, way to go letting Edwards a now 2 time super bowl winning safety walk for Ryan Neal…..

The Bucs may have been playing in that game if it weren’t for a liability in the secondary

  92. Rod Munch Says:

ATLBUC – oh my, I had no idea, but I’m glad to see my gaydar is working correctly.

  93. Rod Munch Says:

Tbbucs3 – in fairness, the worthless Neal was less than half the cost. Also, I think everyone, including Licht and Edwards, thought he was going to get a much bigger deal. I think if they had thought Edwards would have to get a cheap one-year prove it deal, Licht would have gladly paid him again.

  94. BradyGronk Fan Says:

“Some NFL observers think Mahomes is encroaching on Brady’s status as greatest ever. He’s close.” Joe, since when is 50% close cause that’s where Mahomes is at compared to Brady. He’s less than that when looking at SB wins, TDs, yards, games played.

The only person that can compare to Brady is there former GOAT Montana. Unfortunately, Mahomes has 10 years or so to continue to make a case for himself.
