Rachaad White Talks Baker Mayfield

February 20th, 2024

Respecting his QB’s mentality.

When Bucs running back Rachaad White came into the league as a rookie in 2022, he played for the greatest to ever take a snap. And Tom Brady was very much a one-dimensional quarterback: pocket passer.

So White didn’t know much about Brady’s successor, Baker Mayfield, when the Bucs signed the former Browns, Stinking Panthers and Rams quarterback. White did know he was mobile.

But not that mobile!

White made an appearance on Adam Schefter’s podcast. There, Schefter asked White what surprised him about Mayfield. Initially, White said nothing, but after some thought, White recalled things that did.

“He came in with swag,” White said of Mayfield last spring. “[H]e embraced us; we embraced him, which was great man. Great great to see.

“What surprised me was him being mobile, like a lot mobile. Like trying to run through dudes instead of sliding and things like that. That was a surprise out there on the field.”

White confessed to Schefter that he and others tried to tell Mayfield not to pretend he’s Mike Alstott, that he’d be better off hitting the turf or running out of bounds. White seemed to indicate that Mayfield just isn’t wired that way.

So White said ,n so many words, ‘OK boss, you do you.’

“You got it man, if you want some wear and tear on your body [it] seems like, so take that off of me then,” White said.

But White and his teammates are right. Mayfield, while Joe loves that aggressive mentality, is much more important to the Bucs healthy in December and January. The beatings Mayfield takes often wear on him late in the season.

For example, Mayfield was so beat up in the final game of the regular season, a must-win game to make the playoffs, that if the Bucs were playing anyone else but the Stinking Panthers, Joe isn’t so sure the Bucs win that game.

With Mayfield unable to throw properly the Bucs squeaked by with a 9-0 score. If that was the slimy Saints or the Dixie Chicks, Joe isn’t sure the Bucs even make the playoffs.

Teammates always talk up each other. Got any real news? I thought yesterday was a do-or-die day to sign Evans? What happened?

  2. BillyBucco Says:

Extending plays is what I consider MOBILE.
Try keeping your head up after eluding a sack.
Baker looks like Mini Me running from Fat Bastard.

  3. infomeplease Says:

Bellybutton, sector me that BM6 got quite a few 3rd and longs with his feet, especially whether we’re needed.

  4. infomeplease Says:

Sorry meant to say “seems to ” I really should proof read…but not!

  5. infomeplease Says:

    Missed your name to…not intentionally!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mayfield tends to hold the ball too long…..doesn’t want to throw it away. It has cost him some sacks.
I like his mobility but he has to be smarter……I fear he will get himself injured and be sidelined for multiple games.

  7. Dave Pear Says:

Baker was in the saddle for the Panthers win.

Trask would have lost the game.

  8. BillyBucco Says:

    Who cares?
We aren’t talking about paying Trask 35 Million a year!!!

  9. Beeej Says:

Baker averaged 2.4 seconds on the season, slightly faster than most

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Rachaad White came into the league in 2022 Joe – not 2020. White still has 2 years left on his rookie contract.

    Mayfield is definitely a “gamer”……

  11. Lakeland Steve Says:

Love Mayfields competitive nature, but the man needs to learn how to slide. Especially if he gets a big fat contract. We need him on the field not in the training room.

  12. go dawgs Says:

rachaad white never met a podcast or interview he didnt like…

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Baker Mayfield is a young Probowl QB, whos taken 2 teams to the playoffs.
Everyone on that offense is gonna wanna play with him. Those are very rare, and make everyone look better

  14. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Care Pear please Trask would’ve won the game handily. Baker was selfish and scared for his career that’s why he played. He almost lost the game for us so stop it, you fanbois forget that sigh of relief you all blew out when Blowles handed him the starting nod since he was trying to save his own job.

  15. heyjude Says:

Baker is a great fit for the Bucs. There is harmony in the locker room and on and off the field. Baker is the guy.

  16. BakerBucs Says:

Heyjude says don’t make them made u go get them haters

  17. Marky Mark Says:

There is all these couch potato haterz on this board but a guy who actually takes hand offs and catches passes from Baker loves him…. So who do you believe?

  18. Kidfloflo Says:

Say what u will about Baker, and I’m not saying he’s better than Brady, but a QB that can get the tough 3 and long with his feet to keep drives alive is invaluable, and most teams today have someone that can do that…and thankfully we do to now!

  19. heyjude Says:

Hoping that Baker and Mike are both back next season.

  20. heyjude Says:

Marky Mark and Kidfloflo – Agree with you both. I believe Rachaad White and the rest of the team. They love him. At the pro bowl, they all loved him. He was MVP. He’s our QB.

  21. Shane Callahan Says:

Did BillyBucco even watch a game this season?

  22. Shane Callahan Says:

Part of me really wants Baker to play for y’all again next year, but another part of me says that y’all don’t deserve him. I’ve never seen so many haters of their hard-nosed winning QB who can make any throw. It’s ridiculous.

  23. Shane Callahan Says:

We don’t have a pro team in Oklahoma. We watch our Sooners in the NFL. I have witnessed great Sooner QBs like Aikman, Holloway, Bradford, White, Murray, Hurts, and Mayfield. Mayfield is the greatest. If y’all get him a better team around him, you’ll see just how great he is. Until then, enough with the hate you morons.

  24. Shane Callahan Says:

Apologies for leaving out Tennessee HC Josh Heupel, he was great, too. 🙂

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

So true, but its not other sites. Its just this one.
This site stirs up arguments, and attracts so very unintelligent and uninformed posters.

You are right about Mayfield. The best is yet to come. Its a miracle what he did with NO RUNNING GAME, and a Pathetic Offensive line.

If Licht gets some talent around him, he is capable of bringing a SuperBowl trophy to Tampa.

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

Unlike most, Joe, Im grateful that my post occasionally go in to moderation.
Capt. Tim is a fairly intelligent guy, who knows alot about football.

Moderation keeps me from telling some of the simpletons what I think about them.
So thank you Joe! Moderation is probably why Ive been with you such a long time.
And with moderation, hopefully Ill be with you a long time to come!

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

That wasnt about you, Shane. Thank you for your kind words.
I wrote a nice pist in reply to you.
Dont see it. Think its in Moderation

  28. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

welcome to joebakerflufferfanboimanlovefest.com where using actual and factual stats of Bakers where he sucked in 2019, 2021 and 2022 and disagreeing he’s such a great qb makes you a hater by a bunch of tutu wearing male cheerleaders. What you all gonna do when he retires ? Find yourselves another shortish Rudy type guy to knutthug? The infestation of these fanbois has made this site worse than a Republican Democrat debate blog.

  29. Gene Says:

DavidBigSaintsFan99 is a joke on this site…doesn’t have anything constructive or intelligent to say…not even anything remotely approaching a football discussion for this site or article. What’s the matter Davieboy, the Saints don’t want to print your dribble on YOUR fan site? You’d be more useful to a discussion mute.

  30. Gipper Says:

You need to say sensible things on this site rather than blather away about your hatred for Mayfield. You are about to show how absurd you are as some GM will soon make a deal for north of $35mill/ year for Mayfield’s services. You have been in the venomous camp all year and Mayfield has proved you and your hate crew wrong all year.
