“Just Let It Rip. I Got Your Back”

February 14th, 2024

Yes, Joe still listens to Dave Canales interviews. One never knows what the 2023 Bucs offensive coordinator might say in his new role as Carolina Panthers head coach.

Canales joined Movin’ The Chains on SiriusXM NFL Radio recently and was asked about Todd Bowles and Pete Carroll, the two head coaches he has worked under.

Canales praised Bowles for being a liberating presence that built a culture in which it was ok to make mistakes.

“Just the amount of confidence and trust he gave me going into those games early in the season, he could tell I was nervous,” Canales said of Bowles. “He could tell it mattered to me and I really wanted to do well. And he would just quietly come up and just say, ‘Hey, let it rip. I got your back. Let’s go for it.’

“He was never trying to control saying, ‘Hey, you need to do this or that.’ He was like, ‘Just let it rip and I got your back.’ For me, that just really freed me up to learn the lessons I needed to learn. And then you make those mistakes early on and you fail forward fast, you know. That’s kind of the culture that he created there when I was with him for just that one season.”

Joe was glad Canales referenced the screwing-up-is-part-of-the-game environment Bowles crafted.

Certainly, that was an adjustment from the Tom Brady era. And it was necessary considering the 13 rookies on the Tampa Bay roster with a new quarterback and a new playcaller.

Bowles played his hand well. Yeah, the season and a lot of jobs probably came down to a Week 14 Rachaad White run on 4th-and-1 in Atlanta, but it was successful and the Bucs rebounded phenomenally well.

All the haters say Bowles held Canales and the Offense back…. Shows you how much these know it all’s really know. (Not a damn thing)

  2. Since76 Says:

So Canales was told let it rip. Well it only ripped around 5 games all season. I will tell you I thought bowles was riding the brake. Seems he was in the back seat yelling floor it. So what was the problem on offense. Bad players that are over hyped or a bad play caller alla leftwich. I think a little of both. Hell I really thought bowles was braking from the front seat.

  3. Tony marks Says:

If thats the case Canales sucked because it means he was the one calling all those runs up the middle off his own philosophy. Interested to see if he does that in Carolina.

  4. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@Since76, part of the problem was that it took almost the entire season for some of the players to learn a new offense.

They did look much better in some of the games towards the very end of the season.

Had Canales come back in 2024 (as well as Evans) It’s likely they would have been better on offense to start the season.

  5. Jack Clark Says:

Put some respect on Rachaad White’s name, he saved our season

  6. Esteban85 Says:

I’m sure I’ll take heat for saying this but I really think TB is a good coach. I like his defenses 90% of the time, I like his personality and coaching style. I like that he is not a blow up and scream type of coach, and I like that he lets the offense do it’s thing. He’s a grown ass man who is steady and his players would break bones for him. I think that’s what you need in the NFL. I hope he has a great year next season.

  7. Esteban85 Says:

We had quite a bit of rookies on our virgin offense this year and we also had a good amount of second year players. People are so quick to blame this coach or that player but the fact remains that once we started to gel on offense and not shoot ourselves in the foot we were above average.

  8. Allbuccedup Says:

    We are treading water!!!!!!!!

  9. JTHV Says:

Joe can listen to that guy all he wants but JTHV was done listening to his lose lips after Week 1

The guy is a Panther, I hope he goes 0-16 and more importantly makes it past Week 10.

‘I’m sure I’ll take heat for saying this but I really think TB is a good coach.’

Sadly Esteban you may be right. But look at the heat and unlike your “balanced” view of the situation they go for their “feelings” and gut reactions. Then look at the people who will support you, led by one of the most if not the most respected posters here D.R. He makes many of the same points as you.

As for me I totally respect Bowles. My issue is simply one of style and taste.
The Bucs have now won two SB’s. They won the first with the 17th ranked QB in the league that year and an historic defense for the ages! They won the second with the GOAT and a “no risk it no biscuit”. My “personal” preference is watching bombs away but my real desire is the same as the great Al Davis.

    “Just win baby!”

There is more than one way to win and Bowles way can be just as effective as BA’s. BOTH ways have been successful as evidenced by this franchises 2 Super Bowls.

So Esteban I agree with you! “I really think TB is a good coach.”

  11. Buc4evr Says:

Let it rip, what a bad joke. Total BS. The guy is delusional.

Tampa has the Best Coach, Best Owners, Best GM and Best QB in the NFC South. We should rule this division and have a shot at a home playoff game or two every season. Which gives us a decent shot at making the NFC Champ game. It’s not an accident we have been in the playoffs 4 straight years and won the division 3 straight years. No other team in the whole NFC can say that. Let’s not blow this up and try to bring every significant contributor back while the other 3 teams are wallowing in poopeeness. This was Bowles first playoff victory. He has room to grow too. He already has by doubling down on the right offensive scheme. The offensive will figure itself out. Let’s invest in some Defense and give the Offense a little slack. Winning and playoff success makes all the little ills go away. KC was kept in it because of their defense. It’s not just about the QB and the HC.

  13. stpetebucfan Says:

    Ghost

“KC was kept in it because of their defense. It’s not just about the QB and the HC.”

Yep as mentioned frequently during the broadcast Andy Reid had to adjust this year…a less than dominant OL…the loss of the best deep threat in the NFL in Cheetah..he relied much more heavily on his D all season long.

This makes me respect Reid all the more. He can win more ways than one…and yes Mahomes is the stone cold killer at QB but first the D has to keep KC in the game for the Mahomes Magic.

Sign the FA’s and use the draft to build the trenches and find another RB to complement one of the best receiving backs in the NFL.

I don’t want much huh? LMAO Work your magic Jason!

  14. Greg Says:

However, they started and whatever happened behind the scenes that we will never know about… the fact is, they got better and learned and progressed. That’s no accident. Bowles deserves the credit for the team holding together with a rookie OC and 13 rookies on the field.

    That’s remarkable.

  15. BucsFan81 Says:

Went back and watched highlights from all the 2020 games when we won the superbowl. Damn the play calling was so much better with Arians. A lot of deep passes. Mixing the run in with the pass. They need to take the damn training wheels off and let it rip and be more aggressive this season coming up like they did in 2020.

  16. BillyBucco Says:

I think Coen has a better grasp of downfield passing schemes from McVay.
It’s no secret that Godwin has been highlighted by Liam already basically running routes that Cupp ran his triple crown year.
Let it rip requires TIME to hit those inside out concepts that made Cooper so successful.
If Bowles truly wants to let it rip again we need 2 more quality O Lineman and Ray Davis in the 3rd or someone similar. I think Corum is moving up draft boards and may go early second round. If we can get one edge player or G/C to n FA or edge, then the first 2 rounds should be the other 2.
I wouldn’t touch skill players in the first 2 rounds.
Unless of course Baker and Mike leave.
Then it’s TIME to blow it up.

  17. David Says:

Extremely inciteful because a lot of people think Bowles was behind the early and often run heavy offense. If you paid attention though, Canales was part of that in Seattle.
Great to hear because the new OC should open it up more and it sounds like Bowles will be hands off the offense.

  18. David Says:

ALOS- many are saying the offense did not “let it rip”….
New guys, new line, new QB, new OC… of course it did not look great most the season. It definitely improved though. I think Canales will develop very well but I still like the new OC better. Better track record for the modern NFL passing attack.

  19. Crickett Baker Says:

JTHV, I think we feel the same about Canals. I don’t think he is nearly ready to be a HC and I hope he proves it.

  20. Let ‘em bake Says:

Dave was a first time oc. He adjusted towards the end of the mid season slump. The Green Bay game was a beautifully called , beautifully executed game. The Philly playoff win was a joy to watch, highliting lesser lights like Palmer, Otton, and Moore. Growth , through experience, is one of life’s joys, and Canales grew much . I wish him well, and hope next year can be is riveting as this past season was for those Bucs fans who lived and died each week with this bunch , that no one ( almost) thought would succeed( you can not win the Super Bowl and still call the year a success).

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Too bad BA wasn’t the head coach.

  22. Leopold Stotch Says:

I don’t find Canales to be a liar, so I will take his word and eat crow about Todd Bowles being too conservative.

  23. BucU Says:

Canales is a traitor. I look forward to seeing the Panthers suck and suck bad again this upcoming season.

  24. Zoocomics Says:

@BucsFan81…To say the play calling was so much better is simply out of context. That 2020 team was simply a better roster, and it’s not a knock against the current roster. You put that team in this year’s play book, and we’re probably a 4-loss team. Think about the Wins and Losses we had this year, it’s funny how we were a hair closer to be terrible or fantastic the way some of the games swung.

Arians style of offense gets a lot of credit, but when you have elite/pro bowl/hall of fame talent on both sides of the ball it changes the narrative. I will say the playoffs during our Super Bowl run was boss, without some of those big throw decisions, who knows what the outcome would’ve been.

To my point, go back and watch the following season, 2021where we lost only 4 games. We were the worse 4-loss team I think I’ve ever witnessed; I believe that. We escaped games that with that roster we should have easily won, instead we managed to play down to the level of the team and then somehow escape with the W. Short of elite talent Arians offense looks exactly like Brady’s last season with us. PERIOD.

  25. SufferingSince76 Says:

I love it when I’m told I didn’t see what I saw all season long. Thanks.

“Growth , through experience, is one of life’s joys,”

    Amen!!! You “get it” Bake.

And here is the beauty for you “young” guys…anybody 50 and under from my perspective lmao. If you keep your mind open to that “growth” the JOY can continue throughout your life.

That’s my bottom line tip from the mid 70’s age group. NEVER stop growing. Keep your intellectual curiosity and stayed involved in life!

  27. Winny Testaverde Says:

Romance novelist Davey “Can do” Canales sold Panther owner David Tepper a bill of goods in exchange for a 6 year contract. My disdain for the pathetic Panthers waned a bit recently…once Fig Newton talked his way out of the league. Panther hate back on…Davey no longer tempted by Mons Venus at least.
