Jason Licht Explains Status Of Talks, Interesting Name Omitted

February 28th, 2024

Confident.

It’s not like anyone should be remotely surprised by this.

Yesterday when Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht spoke to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis, he was asked “where things stand” in his negotiations with players he wants to bring back.

A certain someone Licht didn’t mention, which should dismiss any hopes some may have for a former starter wearing pewter and red in 2024.

“We have started talks with Baker [Mayfield], we started with Mike [Evans], Antoine [Winfield], Tristian [Wirfs], Lavonte {David],” Licht said. “I think they are going well — they are all priorities.”

So who is missing? That would be the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 draft, inside linebacker Devin White. Yes, the same White who was benched by Todd Bowles late in the season when the Bucs were fighting for a playoff berth.

(And yes, Joe knows Wirfs is not a free agent but is entering the last year of his rookie contract.)

Anyone who wagered White would return to the Bucs may want to start figuring out a way to recoup their near-future losses.

  2. teacherman777 Says:

New Orleans is going to sign him.

We should think about bringing back Kwon Alexander.

Buh Bye. DWhite. Shaq, CDavis. Those are some Big Salaried guys that dont justify their pay. Pass Rush. Pass Rush. Winfield back with BM and ME back with a new C and LG We be Good for next year. Go Bucs!!

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Naw it’s cool. I shorted White back in August.

  5. Onetrickpony Says:

    JTS needs to go too

  6. Allbuccedup Says:

Middle linebacker is not the big of a priority as it once was the Bucs could find an adequate replacement in the third or fourth round. Outside linebackers like ( Lavonte David ) are moving all over inside/outside.

  7. Beeej Says:

JTS still has a year on his rookie, is a passable rotational anyhow

  8. Allbuccedup Says:

Bucs should make a run at Brian Burns takes Shaqs place. Sign the big four add Burns superbowl.

Did anyone expected otherwise? Come on Joe , this is a no news…

    Giddy up !
    Ride on out of town
    Doesn’t understand the game

Not to mention, Todd and Jason don’t like quiters or players that put the ownership group in a position we’re they have to apologize for one players effort. The Glazers are forgiving owners to a certain extent. After that it becomes personal and you then have to show them the exit sign. Devin White never took responsibility for his play until it was to late. He lost his teammates and I think he realized that his effort stunk. He will be wearing a different color uniform next year, who knows maybe flapping his wings like a falcon.

wish white well. he was a beast when used properly

  14. Jack Clark Says:

Hopefully Devin White can go to the Kansas Chiefs and win another super bowl like Donovan Smith and Mike Edwards did

  15. cometowin2 Says:

He was a beast when motivated properly. Not self motivated as the greats are.

  16. Pryda…sec147 Says:

It pains me to see us lose Devin but clearly he doesn’t want to be here seeya ty for the Super Bowl

  17. CleanHouse Says:

Devin White will be a 49er mark my words- bet on it

  18. RGA Says:

    Need to sign the kicker

  19. BillyBucco Says:

Outside an edge rusher or 2 this defense can win games.
I say we surround Baker with as much talent as possible.
    That includes C/LG.
Outside that Licht seemed confident Sean Tucker would be much improved this year. Who knows Coen might LOVE him.
I say do your best to upgrade C/LG in FA and maybe an unproven edge.
Then in the draft go Offense Offense Offense.

Any team should NOT have more than 5 high priced FAs, maybe 6 now that tje salary cap has gone up.
For our team it should be QB, Edge, LT, WR, S and C.
Get rid of Davis and upgrade C and we are there.

This old news. No one thinks he’s returning, so it should not be even worthy of an article to mention it. Everyone knows he’s gone.

  22. Beeej Says:

If we traded CD3 for Reddick, (Eagles dying for corners) would our cost stay similar?

  23. JimBobBuc Says:

Sign Chase McLaughlin too! He’s a great kicker. I bet he had good stats last year?

  24. Let em bake Says:

    Nelson should start over jts.

    This old news

Hard to be “old news” when it’s barely a day since Licht spoke this.

Before yesterday, when did Licht last comment on contract negotiations on the record about his current free agents?

  26. Bucsfan Says:

    Licht needs a sports bra

Okay, i guess if you think it was a notable omission, it would be news. The thing is, there was no reason to believe, based on EVERY.OTHER.FACT, that White would be re-signed. It actually would have been notable and cause for serious questioning if Licht had included Devin White as a priority to re-sign. I just don’t think omitting Devin White from the list of re-signings was in any way notable. Was anyone who reads JBF or any other decent source of Bucs news actually surprised Licht didn’t mention White? Doubtful.

  28. SlyPirate Says:

    Thank goodness.

It’s be interesting to see who signs him and for how much. I really don’t see White getting more than $3-5M to play next year. His tape is terrible.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

I really do think JTS needs to pack his bags. His play all year long was like he was not even on the field.

  30. Biff Barker Says:

JTS wins the “running in after the play is over award”
    Cut this pile of crap!

  31. Hodad Says:

Should be some property with a horse barn going on the market very soon at a cheap price!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Since Bowles is here, there is no reason to bring back White.

I’m a fan of White, he’s a great play disruptor when he’s unleashed, and instead Bowles just has him sit back in a soft zone 90% of the time, where he’s not effective at all. I don’t know why Bowles refuses to look back at his own coaching film and play White like he did in 2020 when he was an ALL-PRO player, but Bowles just refuses to use him that way, and thus he’s wasting away.

Really White should have stuck to his guns last year and demanded a trade if he was just going to be wasted again this year. It literally cost him many millions of dollars.

  33. Drunkinybor Says:

The 100 million dollar man Mr. White.

  34. Larrd Says:

    No news is good news!

  35. gotbbucs Says:

Not an interesting omission at all. An unbelievably obvious omission is more accurate.
Is it a coincidence that this team turning the season around and White being “injured/non-active” happened at the exact same time? White looked good against garbage teams and was horribly exposed by good teams.

    …………………………………………

White was one of the least effective LB’s in the NFL, warrants no more money then Nelson, etc…probably less

  37. Rich Says:

Rod…go munch on some of 45’s horse poop. He was terrible for the past 3 years!!!! No instincts, can’t cove, terrible tackler, constantly overrunning plays, never shed a block in his career, splash plays were always created by others and he gotccredit for picking up the fumbles, I could go on and ob…he simply is NOT a good football player. Teams don’t give up on good players…watch the tapes, they don’t lie!!!!!

  38. TF Says:

Rod Munch… ummmm seriously? When White was “unleashed” he was one of the most undisciplined players in the history of linebackers. Jumpin offsides every 4 plays, over running the play, breaking containment. He thrived ONE year when he had high IQ veteran players in his ear telling him to chill out and he showed he can be successful if in a “system”. WAY too undisciplined to be “unleashed”. He is a system player and shouldn’t be unleashed anywhere unless he is surrounded by players that can cover up his mistakes. It’s not college or pee wee football where he can get by with athleticism. Wish him nothing but the best finding a team. Steelers perhaps.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Munch hits it – Sloweszo is the reason for White’s demise, in addition to Davis, Dean, and whoever the scrubs are playing safety opposite Toine. Dude Toad has the most overrated rep as a defensive masturmind, when in fact he forces players to his scheme rather than adjusting, overcomplicates and fails to correct the same mistakes made repeatedly.
