Dave Canales Gives Bucs A Shoutout

February 1st, 2024

New Carolina coach Dave Canales.

This morning, new Stinking Panthers coach Dave Canales was introduced to the free world.

Of course, Bucs fans know him well. Canales spent all of roughly 49 weeks as the Tampa Bay offensive coordinator.

And while being introduced to the Carolina community, in his many thanks, Canales gave special shoutouts to Team Glazer, Bucs coach Todd Bowles and quarterback Baker Mayfield. It is because of those men, in part, he is now the shot-caller for the Stinking Panthers.

“I’ve got to thank the Bucs organization for believing in me and giving me a shot,” Canales said. “I was in Seattle for 13 years but I got my first offensive coordinator opportunity way on the other side of the country.

“I really want to thank the Glazer family and Joel and Darcie, Jason Licht, Todd Bowles for giving me that chance. For letting me let it rip and give me the confidence to do that. I’m really appreciative there.”

Then, Canales thanked his past quarterback, Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Mayfield and blamed them for his landing in Carolina.

“It’s their fault that I am here,” Canales joked as he smiled. “And that’s the bottom line. It’s about the players.”

Couple of interesting points Canales made while answering questions from the Carolina pen and mic club.

Canales said he was attracted to the job, in part, because of Stinking Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. Like all NFL teams, position coaches and coordinators scout all the players entering the draft. That’s not so much because they are going to select them — Canales said the Bucs had no way of acquiring Young — but also because teams know they will face these players.

And, just maybe, these players could be on the teams one day. For example, when Mayfield entered the draft in 2018, did Canales at any point think he would be Mayfield’s coordinator?

Canales added there was a lot to like with Young.

Also, Canales was asked about his work with short quarterbacks, Mayfield and Wilson specifically. Canales said he had “proprietary” intel on what works for short quarterbacks and what doesn’t.

Bucs better be ready for Canales to share that intel with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who Canales hopes to retain in Carolina.

Good stuff. I suspect it’ll take a bit, but he seems to have the personality to do well as an HC. He’s a good guy, and it would be easy to root for his success, if not for the Stinking™ team he’s with.

  2. Hodad Says:

F Canales, he’s dead to me.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I think that “proprietary info” line was a joke. However, those three are also highly mobile so you know the plays that Canales prefers.

  4. Architek Says:

I’m happy for both he and his family. Shameful that he couldn’t get Baker to throw the hot routes on the slot blitzes in the playoff matchup against Lions?!?!?

  5. WyomingJoe Says:

Yeah, I’m defending Baker, so what? Lol…

I love how the media classifies Baker Mayfield as being short (he’s 6’ 5/8” according to the NFL combine). But that’s only 1.3” shorter than Mahomes who’s a “giant” at 6-2! Also according to measurements taken at the combine.

    Laughable…

  6. WillieG Says:

Sounds like so many of my ex girlfriends “thank you so much! You helped me feel good about myself, helped my self confidence………in fact, I got so confident, I realized I didn’t need you anymore.”

  7. kaimaru Says:

    @WyomingJoe

Well, I don’t want no short people ’round here

  8. ElioT Says:

I think Dave is going to be an excellent HC and we’re going to have to deal with him for quite some time.

Feel like we missed out on a huge opportunity with this guy.

    Hope I’m wrong.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

    Say WillieG, Good comment. LMAO.

  10. Dave Pear Says:

Canales knows how weak the Bowles’ pass defense has become and how to scorch it. Todd needs to hire a defensive coordinator. But he won’t.

  11. Viktor Vaughn Says:

Hey Todd, call run stops on first and second down….just trust me.

  12. TomBucsFan Says:

He did a decent job while he was here so I don’t hate the guy, goodluck to him just not when playing the Bucs

  13. Pickgrin Says:

Most likely, Tepper will get impatient and fire Canales before DC has a chance to “succeed”….

The Panthers are more than a year or 2 away from being a “good team” – no matter how well Canales schemes. Their defense is decent – but their offense needs a lot of help talent wise. And they traded away all their high draft picks to draft the 5’10” midget QB 1st overall.

I imagine that 6 year guaranteed contract worth 10s of Million$ will help Dave Canales sleep well regardless of how many losses pile up before he inevitably gets fired too soon….

  14. gofortheface30 Says:

Porn addiction is a very serious issue people, find jesus…

  15. Todd Says:

Viktor, do you think Dave is a dummy? He knows that’s exactly what he will do…and will then think to himself, “Dave’s too smart to be that dumb. He’s going g to throw instead…and then run it behind the left guard on first and second downs!”

    🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  16. A Bucs Fan Says:

Canales got the same welcoming ovation as Hue Jackson did before going 1-31 at the Panthers HQ. Eerily similar.

  17. fred Says:

Who cares he’s the opp now!

  18. BucVoyager Says:

Jesus is probably in Mexico somewhere drinking a cold one.

  19. Bojim Says:

It’s about the players. Money helps too. Old news now. He’s good with short QBs. How bout real short QBs?

  20. Rusty Shackleford Says:

I’m actually glad he’s gone. He cried like a sissy, thanked his wife (for what ?), said he fooled around behind her back, drank too much, and looked at dirty movies. What a poser. Give me Craig Erickson as offensive coordinator. He knew how to have a good time.

  21. Rusty Shackleford Says:

I don’t trust men that cry in public in front of their wives. I mean, if you’re a war veteran or you just lost a pet, then sure. But crying like a cukk beaten down low t-cell count pansy ? I’m glad he’s gone.

  22. David G Says:

He is Taylor Swift to me now! i will take shots of tequila everytime they show his mug on TV when we play the stinkin panters!!

    ^^^^^^^^^
Yes, Canales proved he was/is the offensive mastermind that CANNOT BE STOPPED…Did you watch any of the Bucs games? Hahaha

  24. David G Says:

    plus i just like tequila

  25. realistic-optimistic Says:

I’m very happy for Dave, and I hope he has some success (just not against the Bucs). However, there’s one part from his press conference that sticks in my craw.

“There was a growth curve there with Baker (Mayfield),” Canales said on Thursday. “Here’s where we’re at today, based on the information we have. Let’s get into these situations and see where he looks most confident. When I see that back foot planted in the ground and that ball rips out of there without any hesitation, I know we’ve got something.”

One of my biggest complaints about Mayfield was that he NEVER hit the back of his drop and ripped it. He regularly hit his back foot and started getting happy legs. Always dancing around and double-clutching. If Dave was trying to get that fixed, it didn’t happen.

  26. Texasbucsfan.com Says:

Why do you post such garbage. He is gone; used the Bucs to further his resume.
Who cares once they are gone.

  27. Texasbucsfan.com Says:

Why do you post such garbage. He is gone.

  28. CleanHouse Says:

    Hope he does well.
I hate seeing that QB look so bad. Family in Charlotte who’s suffering watching it. Nice community. Good fit personality wise.

  29. Rayjay1122 Says:

Now if he would just hire Bowles to be his DC then that would be great.

  30. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Most pissed that the Panthers hired him this year and screwed the Bucks out of two 3rd rounders.

  31. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The Panthers have a douchebag of an owner, are in a crappy stadium, and Charlotte is a major ghetto dump with no culture.

  32. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The Panthers have a dooche of an owner, are in a crappy stadium, and Charlotte is a major ghetto dump with no culture.

  33. Buccos Says:

Carolina made a big mistake. This guy is in no way ready to be a head coach. He was just starting to get comfortable calling plays towards the end of the year. Only an idiot of an owner would hire him. Fortunately for Dave Carolina has just such an into who owns their team. I’m sure Canales could care less if/when he gets fired. He will have generational wealth if he doesn’t start buying Ferraris

  34. Tbbucs3 Says:

Really dont see the need for taking off the field shots at Dave Canales….he had a rocky past but cleaned up his image….good for him

  35. Lt. Dan Says:

Seriously…some posters on this site can be jerks. I was disappointed Canales moved on too. I was really looking forward to Baker and the offense in year two of Canales system.

He’s a young guy with a bright future. He may have a family – I don’t know. But regardless he’s got to look out for number 1 and what’s best for his future. If any of us commentors on this site were offered a higher paying job and all of the benefits that come with it, how many would say “No – I’m good because some random dudes I’ve never met might not like me anymore.” Sheesh – grow the F up.

  36. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Nobody is knocking Canales for leaving – he is being mocked for being a weak wimpy man and crying like a sissy in front of his wife and then openly talking about fooling around behind her back and watching dirty movies. He is a poser and a typical millenial pansy.

  37. NJbucs23 Says:

the day the bucs hired him I said he would be here no longer than 2 years. Dave has the look and can speak well

best of luck to you Dave expect 2 times a year we spank you

  38. CTBucs Says:

Who cares? Benedict Canales, traitor to the Bucs. You’re the enemy now, and control a garbage franchise. Bad luck to you sir

  39. realistic-optimistic Says:

All this “traitor” talk is childish. Good for Canales. Be happy that a coach from your team was good enough to land a HC job. Where do you think all the coaches the Bucs are about to hire will come from. Hint, it’s other teams. Are they traitors to their old teams too?

  40. SlyPirate Says:

    NEEDED THIS ….

Since Cam Newton left, I’ve never had a reason to be interested in Carolina. Division wins are important but there just wasn’t any substance beyond an NFCS opponent.

Now I have a reason to watch and be interested.

    Crush Canales!

  41. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

I feel bad for the poor, little rich boy. Does anyone think Tepper will have the patience when they go on a losing streak mid season? My guess is that he’ll be an OC somewhere next year.

  42. Nprbuc Says:

    Now Bowels.

  43. Rossta Says:

Who cares he’s for the other team now don’t care what he does what he has to say

  44. HC Grover Says:

Up his. He is now Enemy. Bet the Niners in SB. Swifty will fail.

  45. HC Grover Says:

Up yer Gut Pal…Go Away and stay away you Bum.

  46. FrontFour Says:

Screw him. Out in less than a year. Raiding our coaching staff. Taking critical intel to a division rival. Hope he loses every game.

  47. Sue Says:

    Loser. Onwards!!

  48. Let em bake Says:

That back foot plant Dave mentioned was quite a tell. You could almost predict a completion when baker exploded off that back foot ( especially packers game) . Hopefully van pelt is the hire, baker feasted on play action and naked boots while he was qb coach.

  49. adam from ny Says:

there disco dave goes again……..gassing more heads !

  50. Lt. Dan Says:

    @ Rusty Shackleford:

“Screw him. Out in less than a year. Raiding our coaching staff.”

    Etc…etc…

  51. Anthony Says:

Bummed to see him go. but also, doesnt he look like he coaches english premier???

  52. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^^^^^

where can i find this footage of canales crying like a baby about cheating on his wife and watching dirty movies and being a sissy?

gotta see this stuff man !! 🙂

  53. Molly Says:

If the Saints OC became our head coach….and raided the Saints’ Coaching staff to take to Tampa Bay….as a divisional rival….and the Saints were the divisional winners…..that is the situation you have here. No one is picking on him for moving upwards.
His actions show a lack of loyalty and integrity to jump to a divisional rival and raid their staff to take us down. He should expect the blowback.

I feel bad for Coach Bowles. Terrible thing to do to him and this team. Very disrespectful.

Fear not. It won’t end well in Carolina. Choose wisely Coach Bowles! Coen!!

  54. Tye Says:

Alex Van Pelt now Patriots OC!

  55. Tbbucs3 Says:

When do we start interviewing local Pop Warner coaches for OC?

  56. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jk didnt want Van Pelt anyways, no need to bring any of that smelly Browns stench around Mayfield

  57. Kwame Richardson Says:

New England signing Van Pelt. Go Bucs.

  58. rickym Says:

Van Pelt to the Patriots. As I posted a few days ago, the new Bucs OC will be someone who cannot land another job. Even in-house candidates like the recently interviewed Thad Lewis have not commited to the Bucs.

Bowles offensive assistants have clearly chosen Canales as who they would like to work for. Not one to constantly call for a coaching change but it may be time to bring in a veteran coach like Mike Vrabel to replace Bowles.

  59. A Bucs Fan Says:

Van pelt to the pats! Bucs are being turned down by everyone

  60. Marine Buc Says:

Beaking News: Tampa Bay Bucs decide not to hire an offensive coordinator.

Head Coach Todd Bowles will be calling all the plays for both offense and defense.

    BAM!

    Problem solved.

Super Bowl – here we come!!!!

  61. Sue Says:

Happy about AVP. Wasn’t sure about him….

  62. HC Grover Says:

    Dear Dave,

    Dust off

  63. adam from ny Says:

you guys are bringing back the old 80’s creamsicle vibes…

have some faith in management & ownership…

they’ve proven they are worthy at this point…

we’ve been competitive the past 5 years and are a quality franchise doing quality things…

we’ve gotta be patient and let them work it all out…

maybe they didn’t want van pelt – i certainly didn’t…

i don’t want an OC they call “head & shoulders” – because lord knows, he’s got no neck…lol

we’ve got eliteness with licht, spytek and greenberg…

so chicken wingin’ it might not be the answer…the team might really be trying hard to get a nice match in the building for baker and evans…

something is definitely up because it’s pretty quiet, and dudes are jumping ship in the process…

lose a dude – bring in a dude…not that simple

    #NoDudsOnlyDudes

  64. Crickett Baker Says:

Adam, Dave cried in a very recent interview. He also wrote a book about how he was an alcoholic and cheated on his wife many times and then he “came to Jesus” supposedly and worked his marriage out. This book is available. He is obviously an egotist and IDK how much a bird can change his feathers. He has tried to “gut” the Bucs and to me, that is biting the hand that fed him. I could hardly sleep last night thinking about his hidden character.

  65. Gipper Says:

    Reallist-optimistic,

Totally wrong on Baker “happy feet.” What he does when he moves his feet to secondary and tertiary receiver as is right out of the Manning QB academy. In fact, review Peyton Manning tapes and you will see same movement of feet to the next receiver in progression. A QB who doesn’t get his feet lined up to his target is going to throw a ball that sails and fades. Baker actually very good at moving off primary receiver. Good footwork is essential to playing QB.

  66. Max Says:

NO MERCY!! WALK THE PLANK YA TRAITOR!!!

  67. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Unfortunately, Dave may have made a big leap too soon. Experience: One year as OC, next year as HC? That’s a real mountain expedition in light of the current state of the organization. Best luck to him, but he should’ve hung for more experience and success with the Bucs.
