Crazy Mike Evans Stat

February 22nd, 2024

Destroys single coverages.

This is when you know you have an elite receiver. But will the Bucs see him wear the pewter and red again?

Tag season began earlier this week and, thus far, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has kept the franchise tag in his holster.

That tells Joe either the Bucs are really close to signing their free agents they want back, or they are so far apart that Licht is just waiting for the final day of tag season March 5 to slap the tag on someone.

Of course, a big free agent to monitor is Mike Evans. Joe thinks it is entirely possible that if Evans bolts, Baker Mayfield may as well, if the Bucs let him. Joe is not saying these two moves are likely, just not out of the question.

We all know Evans had a crazy good season in 2023, nearly a career year. He led the NFL in touchdowns with 13. All of this at age 30 when most receivers are preparing to hang up their cleats.

Still, Joe had to do a double-take when reading a stat by former Jets numberscruncher Arjun Menon about Evans facing single coverage.

Nearly half the time Evans faced single coverage from the defense, he got loose. Of all the receivers scheduled for free agency, Evans leads the list with his separation from single coverage. Certainly much better than the most overrated receiver in the NFL, Odell Beckham.

So no, despite being 30, Evans is still at the top of his game.

Can’t throw 50/50 balls to little 6′ dudes

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

Man to think how big his season would have been without the drops. Hell even just 1/2 the drops would have probably resulted in like another 200 yards and multiple TDs

  3. TomBucsFan Says:

Mike Evans only had 7 drops, Puka Nacua had 13 ..

  4. Weebs10 Says:

Odell catching strays and I love it

  5. Boss Says:

they let mike run past because theres an 80% chance he drops the deep ball anyway lol.

he is clutch on hard catches most of the time though….unless he’s gonna have to take a hit.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

Agree that the drops weren’t that bad. The batted pass from Baker when Mike was open by 20 yards sticks n my mind way more than any drops.
I’ll never forget Jamar Chase dropping like 4 balls in his first NFL game. Travis Kelce had several in a playoff game. The drops crowd are a bunch of negative nellies who have probably never played the game.

  7. BillyBucco Says:

Can’t wait for the Bucs to interview all the top QBs and WRs next week and everyone starts really freaking out!!

  8. BillyBucco Says:

Looking at the Draft point system, it would cost Tampa 1,000 points to move up to pick 5. That’s actually less than what it would cost for them to move from 4 to 1.
Outside of Williams, who is shorter than most realize and Maye, that would put every other QB in striking distance if they WANT them.
There is literally no telling what Tampa will do and what they are considering.
I would take Jayden Daniels if he falls in a HEART BEAT.

  9. Hodad Says:

This just in, Mike Evans is a really good receiver. I hope he comes back, but if he doesn’t, life will go on. Same with Baker, and David. Let the market decide their worth. If some teams out bid us for their services, that’s life. I’m sure the Bucs will have someone throwing the ball, and some people catching it, and they’ll be able to find someone to play LB. Whoever that may be, I’ll be rooting for.

  10. Proudbucsfan Says:

I agree with you BillyBucco I think Jayden Daniel’s is the best quarterback in this draft with Drake Maye second. I believe IMHO that Caleb Williams is going to be a big bust. I’ve heard he is hard to coach and he thinks he’s entitled not to mention his dad makes all his decisions. Although I’m praying for Evans and Mayfield to come back, I believe that those two together have a limitless ceiling.

  11. ATLBuc Says:

Open 85 times in single coverage and about 50 of them were missed

Curtis Samuel and Darnell Mooney at the top.. Some ‘Stats’ you have to wonder the formula behind them

  14. Lt. Dan Says:

Welp…that stat just made the price of keeping ME13 go up.

  15. heyjude Says:

Wow, Mike will definitely be pursued as number one. We need to keep both he and Baker.

  16. SB~LV Says:

    My order of keeping
    Mayfield
    Winfield
Evans coming in last, tough year for him to have to do a new deal

  17. BucU Says:

“””Mike Evans only had 7 drops, Puka Nacua had 13 .”””

Problem is Mike’s were all TD drops.

@ Boss says: “…unless he’s gonna have to take a hit.”

May I direct your attention to Nov 3, 2016, Falcons at Bucs with 1:43 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Get your facts straight bro.

And he caught 13 other TD’s as well as dropping 3 TD’s. Compared to Chris Godwin who caught 2 TD’s. Not saying that Godwin is not valuable. Just not close to as valuable as Mike Evans.

  22. Dom Says:

But some here think Baker would be fine on this team without Mike. Lmao

  23. Dave Pear Says:

    C’mon JL, get-r-did.

  24. Trask To The Future Says:

    MAYFIELD GOES IF EVANS DOES???

    Bahahahahahahahhahahaha

Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

Mayfield will sign a $30M+/year new contract with the Bucs no matter who the WRs on the team are. What does he care? It’s about the MONEY

  25. beeej Says:

Bleacher thinks ME13 signs SOMEwhere 2 years, $42 mil guaranteed

  26. Ray Says:

What is wrong with these people thinking he had some astronomical number of drops this year, the number is 7, yep 7 balls dropped in 17 games. I’ll take receiver who drops 7 balls in a season if he is as good as Mike Evans every other snap.

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The only qb he didn’t make look better than he really is was Tom Brady. Evans has been missed when open more than he has dropped but fu fu fans want to cry about drops and lack of yac. The lack of yac is totally on the OC and qb because when he’s running full steam he gets his, especially on deep crossing routes which aren’t called enough for him. All these comebacks and stop and turns. Oh yeah they cry about his offensive pass interference but that proves he’s a very physical receiver at the point of contact which is mostly instigated by dbs. He gets called sometimes because he just embarrasses dudes at times and they do a Lebron flop.
