Todd Bowles Reacts To Dave Canales Leaving For Carolina

January 25th, 2024

BY IRA KAUFMAN

It just so happened that Bucs coach Todd Bowles was in the middle of a podcast interview with me when news broke that his offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, would be the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

While speaking during a recording of “The Eye Test For Two” podcast, which I co-host with fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame selector Clark Judge, Bowles was asked for his reaction to today’s news.

“I’m extremely proud of him and I’m happy for him,” Bowles said. “Dave is a great guy and a great coach. He’s a great presence all the way around and he did a lot of great things for this franchise.

“I don’t even think he was here for a year and now he’s with a divisional rival. It couldn’t happen to a better person. I know we’re going to have to face ourselves as rivals, but I’m very proud of him.”

Bowles was then asked about possibly having to scramble for a successor to Canales or perhaps promote someone already on his Bucs’ staff.

“We have some internal candidates as well as some external candidates,” Bowles said. “Like last year, I’m going to take my time and go through the process.

“You kind of know it when you see it, so you don’t have to rush it. We went through a lot of guys last year and we’ll go through a lot of guys now.”

Bowles did not offer a definitive timetable to select Canales’ replacement.

    Fire Bowles and hire Harbaugh!

  2. CleanHouse Says:

Slow to hire, slow to call a time out, slow to make adjustments. This guy is clueless.

    Tired of it.

Please stop the torture team glazer!

  3. CleanHouse Says:

Harbaugh went to the Chargers already.

    Bowles is sleepwalking.

  4. Jiminfk Says:

Also need a D/C. The defense was lousy this year. A new H/C would be the best news.

  5. Jiminfk Says:

  6. ModHairKen Says:

    Congratulations, Coach Canales.

    Next man up.

  7. RagingBrisket Says:

A promising offseason looks all the sudden quite grim. Such is a Bucs life

  8. Davenport Says:

    Clean out Bowles NOW
There is no point in continuing with this nonsense

  9. Joe Says:

    Fire Bowles and hire Harbaugh!

    Too late.

  10. PbnJ Says:

Where’s Leeman Bennett when you need him?

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Thad Lewis will be the next OC. It’s a lock.

    Dark horse candidate: Brian Griese

  12. Elite Vita Says:

So let me get this straight. No Canales, possibly effecting Mayfield and Evans returning. But….. We DO have Todd Bowles and the 26th Draft Pick ! ITS A BUCS LIFE!!!!

  13. Stevo Says:

Todd Bowles can’t hold on to his good people.

  14. Rick Says:

So much for Baker having a chance at consistency. Unless he goes to Carolina.

Now our coaching staff is going to get raided.

  15. Marco Says:

Time for Team Glazer to step up and make a pitch to Kliff Kingsbury to replace Canales. Kingsbury is in the unique position of having coached both Baker at Texas Tech AND Mike Evans at Texas A&M.

  16. gotbbucs Says:

I can almost guarantee two things. Whoever replaces him will be a dumb hire according to most Bucs fans. Then next season if they do well and get poached as a head coach those same fans won’t be able to live without them.

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

Thadeus Lewis will probably get the job with the Raiders before Bowles even starts to interview potential candidates.

  18. Irish Laughter Says:

Whom ever we hire it will be fine. Baker is used to having a new OC every season
If the money is good, he will be back as well as Evens. No problem. Super Bowl next year. Keeping it real in Ireland. (At least we won’t have to hear the Brady comparisons from Joe again, or will we?)

  19. PbnJ Says:

Which Joe got his feelings hurt I said Bowles is a loser in another thread? Right after my comments are being moderated. Bowles has zero business being a head coach. He’s absolutely a loser but he’s got a timeout in his pocket.

  20. SteveK Says:

    This sucks.

Am I allowed to bellyache in 2024, if we have middle of the pack HC/QB play?

    Not feeling inspired.

  21. Chuck D Says:

    Gotbbucs, that was spot-on!

  22. Sal Says:

Raiders job is already filled #!! It’s thadeus Lewis as New offensive coordinator #!!

  23. BucsBeast Says:

He’s gonna take his time and find out he waited to long. Then it’ll cost him his job.

  24. RC Says:

Bowles got the right guy for him last year in the bad situation he was in. Everyone knew he was at best on his last leg. Canales took the risk anyways and joined. Turned out great for Canales. Did a good job and moved into a head coaching spot. Bowles, if he doesn’t match or exceed last season’s success next season, what happens? One thing is certain, this will be a crazy off season, for sure!

  25. Rusty Shackleford Says:

A bunch of menopausal women in this thread that call themselves “fans”. Y’all need to go see your gynecologist.

  26. Since76 Says:

Time for a new coaching staff. And a new QB.

  27. Tampa Bay-ker Says:

If it were up to me, and Mayfield and Evans left, I’d welcome it. I’d blow it up – entire coaching staff, hire an offense HC, lock up a few core guys, trade some others for draft capital, and jump feet first into the QB draft sweepstakes. I didn’t think Baker could win us a SB anyway – love the guy, just don’t think he’s good enough for that.

  28. donuts Says:

Clean house is the only solution. Kingsbury is not happening….Baker transferred to OK when he was OC at TT. It was a bad ending.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Elite Vita … ‘But….. We DO have Todd Bowles and the 26th Draft Pick ! ITS A BUCS LIFE!!!!’

Only in Bucsville would ‘fans’ whine about finishing in the Top-8 and making it to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Rusty nailed it … ‘A bunch of menopausal women in this thread that call themselves “fans”. Y’all need to go see your gynecologist.

  30. Darin Says:

The glazers will take their time too. There goes beating Carolina twice a year. We’re gonna have the worst HC in the division soon, again.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Who did Seattle fire – who is on the Rams staff you could pick off? Or maybe you have someone on staff already who just slides into the spot.

I was much higher on Canales during the year just about anyone else I saw posting, but still, if I’m Bowles, I’m not too worried. Canales did a good job, but it was more about the scheme than anything else, and there’s plenty of people that run this scheme.

The most important thing for the Panthers right now is salvaging Young, and this scheme has taken Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield from being busts, to legit NFL starters — and no high profile coach would take that Panthers job while being handcuffed to a QB that looks like a bust. So the Panthers bring in a guy who runs a scheme that seems to work well, then if Young looks good – like a real QB – then you can just fire Canales if the rest of the team stinks, since you can now attract a high profile coach. That’s what the Panthers are thinking with this hire.

  32. Milton Says:

Congratulations to those commenters here who said it would be a wasted season and accomplish nothing by playing Baker as he wouldn’t win anything and he would leave after the season and we’d be left having no clue how our second round quarterback can do with starters in a game. What a clusterfark.

  33. johnnymoon Says:

We did not score over 20pts on Offense in 12 of 17 reg season games and Godwin was way underused ..Jury is still out on Canales

  34. Buc15 Says:

Should have made Canales the head coach and offered DC to Bowles.

  35. adam from ny Says:

it’ll be interesting to hear canales at the podium copping pleas next season after around a dozen losses…

he’s not fixing that tiny rookie qb he inherited…

but he gives good podium – so i’m tuning in to his pressers after every game next year……wowzers!

  36. Dan Naughton Says:

Losing the o.c. really doesn’t hurt. He calls lacked excitement. Run up the middle. Run up the middle etc etc . Opposing teams figured out the plays. So I don’t figure this being a big loss!

  37. Elite Vita Says:

    @Defence Rules

Ha ha ha….. you never thought that I could actually BE a Menopausal woman????
Thanks for reminding me about a gynecologist appointment but I never miss any of my physician appointments. Too funny. Thanks for the laugh!

  38. TheMIGHTYVH Says:

@RodMunch – true re what canales did for Geno and Baker but he got that job b/c he spent 8 years in Seattle with Dan Morgan (new Carolina GM). So it’s Morgan’s a$$ if they dont turn BY around. I sure would love to know who made that pick over Stroud. I would bet the farm it was Tepper.

  39. Ko Kiefer Says:

I’m not convinced Bowles will be back, especially in light of this development

  40. geno711 Says:

I hear the Bucs decided not to resign Evans or Mayfield.

    Next year going with:
    Jon Gruden for OC
    Jameis Winston at QB
    Antonio Brown at WR

  41. Proudbucsfan Says:

Now Canales is going to poach our coaching staff and Lewis is taking the Raiders OC job. I don’t much care for the ex OC from the eagles he got fired for a reason. I think we should hire lane Kiffen as OC, he has an amazing offense.

  42. TheMightyVH Says:

DC may be a nice guy and deserving of the Carolina Jon but is he really ready to be a head coach? The dude was a coordinator for all of one year. While I would say he did a solid job here in Tampa it was nothing spectacular. Correct me if I am wrong but the Bucs finished 20th in offense and probably even lower in pts per game while winning the weakest division in NFL. DC going to a team that resides in same division which is arguably the worst run franchise in NFL, own by psycho owner Dave Tepper, with no first rd draft pick, a QB not name CJ Stroud and a 1st time GM.

So if Bowles can find the right OC will be a win for Bucs. I don’t see Carolina amounting to much of anything with Tepper running show. He may have been ultra successful in what made him billions but the dude is clueless on how to own and manage an NFL franchise.

  43. ModHairKen Says:

Everyone who is despondent, take a breath. Change is inevitable and often good.

  44. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

As a wise man said last weekend..”“prolonging the obvious.” …Fire Bowles.

  45. Ko Kiefer Says:

All these Bowles quotes are going to look silly when he’s fired tomorrow hahahaha .. #muhsources

  46. Steven007 Says:

Alex Van pelt will be an interesting name to watch. Experience with Baker.

  47. All_da_way Says:

Bottom line is that the Bucs can find an OC that will improve the run game and unlock the potential of the passing game. Canales did good but he wasn’t great.

  48. I remember 21 Says:

We are legit gonna get murdered next season.

    Man, what could’ve been:
a second place schedule next year
a top 15 pick in a draft with 5-6 outstanding QB prospects
a modern offensive minded coach like Monken or Detroit’s OC to mold said QB
being set up for the next 5-8 years.

    What we get instead:
the murderers row first place schedule
    a high 20s draft pick
another season of bowles’ stubbornness, ineptitude, and incompetence (and a pocket full of time outs)
a reset a year late when bowles gets fired and who knows what draft QB and offensive head coach prospects are available
didn’t even get a second year of continuity with our meh OC, which now impacts our free agent QB & WR1 negatively (plus we now have an intradivision foe that’s intimately familiar with our D schemes and O personnel)
the possibility of: losing Baker (which 🤷‍♂️, I’m not gonna she’d any tears over), drafting a late round, third tier QB that’s gonna get “developed” by bowles (🤮) and a bargain basement, unqualified in house new OC

God that’s depressing! But we beat the worst team in the league (who were playing for nothing btw) 9-0 to back in to the playoffs! Then we beat a team that despite having a good start to the season had completely fallen apart and quit on each other and later fired both their OC & DC! And we were competitive with a Lions team that beat us after we went back to the SAME stupid sh!t (soft zone defense 🤬, refusal to throw downfield {despite them having a terrible secondary}, holding on to time outs) that hadn’t worked all season! Wow, so glad we got to experience all that to keep me excited about this team for the flaming dumpster fire of a season we’re gonna have next year. This past season will surely be a treasured memory for many years to come.

For all of you that were/ are like “bowles has earned another shot, surely this tiger will change his stripes (meaning have a win rate over 42%) after 20 years in the league at age 60 whatever!” or “he’s a good guy, I care more about what’s best for him than the Bucs” or “the cap is what’s holding bowles’ greatness back,” get ready. Cause next season in addition to #FIREbowles and #NOconfidence you’re gonna get SO many #TOLDyouSO s.

The only chance we have is this: bowles goes to the Glazers and says his plan is to have this lameo unqualified QB coach take over as OC. The Glazers, in a moment of clarity, say “no todd, we don’t think so. We’re going to relieve you of your duties now.” We go get Monken or Ben Johnson as head coach, fire the special teams coordinator immediately, get rid of all the random defensive understudys. We let Baker walk. We sell Mike on “we’re committed to trading up for one of the top 5 QB prospects & you’ll have this proven, modern offensive scheme.” If that’s not good enough for him, thanks for your service, let the Texans or KC pay you $28M per in the AFC. Honestly, we’ll probably still get killed next year, but at least we’ll be on the path to future success. The first step to getting out of a hole is to stop digging. As long as bowles is here, we’re still digging.

  49. TheMIGHTYVH Says:

OK. After a quick search of 2023 stats, are we really missing much by losing DC to Carolina? Bucs finished:
32nd in NFL rush yards and averaged a league worst 3.4 yards per rush
    18th in passing yards
22nd in scoring offense – 37 total TDs in 17 games. Whoa.

Like I said above, DC did a solid job nothing spectacular. Baker played well for most of the season and he is the key this off-season as long it is a manageable cap number. This makes it harder but lets see if –
    a) Bowles survives
    b) if he does survive, who he can get as an OC?

Lots of good coaches out there. I saw someone post Lane Kiffin. I for one think that would be a great hire if he would leave OM for an NFL OC position.

  50. All_da_way Says:

Bucs can find an OC that can do better with the Bucs weapons in the passing game.

  51. I remember 21 Says:

As much as I like & respect Defense Rules’ analysis and research, I’m about 95% sure he’s bowles’ burner account, just sayin. Fans are allowed to be unhappy with the team, or at bare minimum call out it’s flaws, no matter their record.

  52. BucEmUp Says:

Brady fixed us for a short time. The cloud of incompetence has returned. So dumb…bye baker, Mike Evans, bye David, this sucks

  53. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

One day people will explain to me what exactly is so special about a teams 2nd Round QB especially when they already have a QB who was the first pick in the NFL DRaft. Sorry 2nd Round QB are Not Special. If they were any good they would have been drafted in the first round. End of Story.

  54. johnnymoon Says:

As long as Todd Bowles is here we will never make the Playoffs or even win a Playoff game.

  55. uhmmm Says:

    BLOW IT UP PLEASE

I never wanted mike and lavonte to go. Ever. but at this point let everyone leave except Whirfs and tank

  56. Bucnjim Says:

I really enjoyed this entire season. We were literally picked to win between 2 and six games at the most. We have star power and talent (STILL) on both sides of the ball. We brought in a QB that might not be Mahomes or any of the top 5 but can keep us winning while rebuilding a SB contender. This is the Lions first time in history getting this far. Try to find the good in everything because life goes by way to fast to be negative all the time

  57. RuKa Says:

Just imagine this situation: just like with an unused timeout at the end of a game, Todd forgets he has to hire an OC and the Bucs have no one calling plays in September….

  58. BillyBucco Says:

Fans are allowed to give their opinions yes, but don’t continue to Whine and give credit to the post that it sounds ridiculous.
I really didn’t like the idea of Baker back with Canales and Bowles again anyway.
Hopefully this causes change that is needed.
Having extra draft capital now is a bonus.
I think the OC from Detroit would be a GREAT HC and he is relatively young.
We have drafted well and he has some pieces to work with.
I say blow it all up and start over.
For those of you clamoring for Baker, yes, he was good enough to win a playoff game, but then his 2 picks sealed the loss. The 2nd was TERRIBLE.
I LITERALLY, would rather have suffered through a year of Trask and either KNOW he can lead this team OR get a young Jayden Daniels to go with a new coach.
I can tell you Bowles is NOT all of a sudden gonna become a GREAT coach.
Im actually hoping next year is the 5 win season we should have had this year.
I lime the STOP DIGGING idea.
It does seem like a rather deep hole.

  59. Defense Rules Says:

I remember 21 … ‘We are legit gonna get murdered next season.’

I try to respect others’ positions, especially when they’re founded in solid analysis, but trust me I’m not ‘Bowles burner account’. I got upset with some of the defensive schemes I was seeing this year just like most others did. But MAYBE a difference between us is that I try hard to ‘look behind the veil’ as they say in the corporate world to figure out WHY he’s trying to do what we’re seeing. Sometimes his explanations make sense; sometimes they don’t. Gee, kinda sounds like LIFE with most of the folks I’ve been around for many years now.

But above all, my career taught me to focus on PERFORMANCE and RESULTS. The important ones, not ‘He failed shoe-tying 101’. As a HC, where you finish is the key RESULT. And he finished in the Top-10. Duh. I don’t care if he was ‘lucky’ or whatever … my team finished in the Top-10. As a DC, Points Allowed is IMO most important. And using that criteria, the Bucs’ defense, orchestrated by Todd Bowles, finished #7 in the NFL. Duh again.

Been a Bucs’ fan for over 40 years now, and I remember a LOT of very dark days (and years). Team PERFORMANCE stunk in many (maybe most) of those, and the RESULTS reflected that. Have no desire to see my team go back to those days. Feel free to embrace your ‘We are legit gonna get murdered next season’ but I’ll admittedly never understand why anyone would want to go that route.

  60. Bucnjim Says:

Defense Rules always the voice of reason on JBF. Might not agree every time but always appreciate your intelligent posts. Fans and society in general are too quick to hate on everything. There is always someone or something better just go out and find it! Proud of this team’s fight and hope it continues next season.

  61. A Bucs Fan Says:

Raheem to the falcons! Canales to the Panthers and I just read Gruden is a candidate for the Saints OC job! Funny how things work out.

  62. ocala Says:

Bucs are in a bad spot they lost their best coach and kept their worst coach.

  63. TheMightyVH Says:

And that’s why the Falcons are the Falcons… Ra Ra the clown… have fun ATL. Great news for Bucs. He’s horrible head coach

  64. The Scourge Says:

My god…this comment section is a disaster. Acting like it was Canales not the schedule and on field leadership that made the late season run a success. The guy may be a fantastic head coach but he was a middle of the pack OC at best. He was third, or even fourth, on the off season priority list. The POTENTIAL of him improving in his second year is the only reason this should bother us.

  65. darengibo Says:

Sheepshead! So many were throwing fits when Bucs hired this unknown OC… throughout the season so many hated on him.. now he leaves and the fits continue. Not sure what else to say

  66. WyomingJoe Says:

This is hilarious. Almost EVERYONE was complaining when Canals was hired, and throughout the year, declaring how incompetent and inexperienced he was. What a horrible hire most said. And how he would do nothing but lose. Now that he’s gone, he suddenly has turned into the messiah? Many of you so called fans are nothing but whiners and losers.

So relax. Baker, Evans and Winfield will all re-sign. A new OC will be chosen and the Bucs will continue to grow.

But don’t worry. Soon you’ll be able to whine about someone new!

  67. GhostofBrady Says:

    Rod Munch Says:
“Who did Seattle fire – who is on the Rams staff you could pick off? Or maybe you have someone on staff already who just slides into the spot.”

Raheem Morris just got hired off the Ram’s squad to be Atlanta’s coach. The Bucs need to get a hold of Zac Robinson (current QB coach and passing coordinator) and interview him before Raheem convinces Robinson to join him.

Zac likely worked with Baker last year and helped him do well there. The in-house guys like Thad Lewis do not seem a fit for Baker. It would be back to the Air Arian offensive which even Tom Brady did not do well. I see Baker doing Jameis Winston in that offense giving out interceptions like it’s Christmas.

  68. stpetebucfan Says:

D.R. is correct….RUSTY FOR THE WIN…for this entire season in fact.

“Rusty nailed it … ‘A bunch of menopausal women in this thread that call themselves “fans”. Y’all need to go see your gynecologist.”

AMEN. Perhaps Joe can pick up some ads for Midol!!! This board could use a truckload!

BTW Mayfield is not going to Carolina to join Canalas any more than going back to Cleveland to erase the Watson mistake. Per multiple reports, Mayfield asked for his release from the Panthers. He knew it was a sh!tshow. He also knows Tepper is the head turd.

@RodMunch – true re what canales did for Geno and Baker

    ———–

I’d disagree strongly with the idea that Canales turned around Geno, wasn’t that the year that Canales got demoted to passing game coordinator?

In any case, it’s all about that scheme. In some ways it’s similar to what the Rams also run, and that offense also makes QB’s look good.

I know when Canales was hired, I wasn’t a fan, but he won me over very quickly when I saw the offense in action. But I really don’t think he’s going to be that hard to replace, so long as they keep the same scheme. In fact I’d likely just hire someone internally to keep things as consistent as possible.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

GhostofBrady – I haven’t looked at the other staffs, but Zac Robinson, as you said, sounds like someone of interest.

Also I’d have no issues if they just picked someone internally.

If they did go a different route, back to a vertical offense, then yeah, you change QB as Baker would be a poor fit. But Bowles, as he’s said over and over, thinks a QB job is to first and foremost protect the ball — not to score points, so I doubt Bowles would want to change schemes.

  71. Wild Bill Says:

Not surprised Canales bailed out of Tampa. He never got to install the kind of offense he wanted. Bowles did loosen the reigns a bit after the mid-season Bucs slump, but Canales never got to run the offense like he would have liked. To go to the lowly Panthers he must have been desperate to get out from under Bowles. Going to the Panthers was a desperation move.

  72. Milton Says:

I read Canales wanted to start Trask and has not been a happy camper.

  73. stpetebucfan Says:

    Milton

I’d love to read that…where did you see such a report?

  74. unbelievable Says:

Is someone really crying about facing all the 1st place teams next year?

Grow a pair. That’s what winning does – makes you compete against the best.

And guess what? We faced all the 1st place teams this year and last year too, and still won the division.

  75. Eric Says:

    Crybabies galore.

    Brian Griese?

  76. Mike S Says:

Seems like we are right back where we were last year.

No OC, coming off a playoff exit after winning the division by default, low draft pick. Trask is the only QB on the roster.

Except instead of costing the Bucs 6 million – Baker will come in-between 27 and 35 million.

Oh yeah and Mike Evans is not on the roster.

So how did not starting Kyle Trask work out for us.

Pretty much exactly the way we said it would.

Bowles gets to keep his job and Baker is going to get paid so I guess that’s nice.

  77. Let em Bake Says:

Rod…really? Baker not suited to the vertical game? I believe the Bucs were among the league leaders in plays of over 20 yards. Passing Yards. Mike wasnt catching lil dinks. Ditto Godwin. C mon bud, yer better than that.

  78. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Billy upcoming u r really Billy puke o

  79. OlBoy Says:

Hey, let’s all ask Thad what we have in Trask when he makes OC and still sits him on the pine

  80. Sunken Ship Says:

    Losers lose.

We get to reload, lose talent, and squander under a QUITTER

  81. Pirates Life Says:

    Arrrrg! Shiver Me Timbers!!!

  82. stpetebucfan Says:

    Mike S

“Pretty much exactly the way we said it would.”

So are you assuming that Trask would have won a 3rd straight Division title and a first round playoff game?

Is that what you said would happen? So the man who just got a head coaching gig for participating in the decision to use Baker instead of Kyle is wrong?

  83. It's Corn Says:

I guess you have to give Canales some leeway, but it seems kinda shoddy to go from a team that gave you your first shot at being a coordinator after how many years, and with only one year done, then jumping to their division rival.

  84. Dave Pear Says:

Todd gave Canales all the incentive he needed to accept the Tepper offer that no one else would want, instead of waiting around the Bucs for another season, figuring that the defensive decline would continue as would departing free agents accelerate said decline.

    Why prolong the obvious?

Todd should have T-shirts made with that slogan on it. In Creamsicle colors.

  85. adam from ny Says:

finally when things start clicking after the first 10 games of nonsense…….the dude bounces to carolina…

we need a short list of availables…

i saw someone said kingsberry is out there…

there’s gotta be some heavy dudes out there who are probably better than canales…

canales wasn’t all that good…he was floundering and fumbling a lot before he himself started to get into a groove…

canales is a real pisser…this sucks

  86. Onetrickpony Says:

The trick will be finding an OC that will take orders from TB on running up the middle. You know square peg in a round hole?

  87. TheLaughingMan Says:

They need to go after Jay Gruden, not Jon…went to hs with Jay…he’s a smart wily OC

  88. Brandon Says:

Bowles is horrible, how do you take a team that most didn’t have winning four game and take them to the playoffs and nearly win two more games? Awful coach… posting a winning season with a rookie playcaller that was over his head for the majority of the season and a QB that nobody wanted. How dare he? Terrible!

  89. GhostofBrady Says:

    Let em Bake Says:
“Rod…really? Baker not suited to the vertical game? I believe the Bucs were among the league leaders in plays of over 20 yards. Passing Yards. Mike wasnt catching lil dinks. Ditto Godwin. C mon bud, yer better than that.”

I think Baker has matured. Just risky with a tendency in the vertical game of just airing it out on a lot of 50/50 balls. Many of Baker’s big plays this year were pin point small window throws with timing which suits his game. He released a lot of zingers before the receivers broke and the ball often hit the receiver’s gloves. I like that better for his confident then chucking it.

The Rams were 11th in rushing. I think the whole point of this offense with most was generate movement pre-snap to determine defense, run on read or play action disguise, read defense reaction and throw before receivers break to open spot. That does not work when your are 30th in rushing and the team doesn’t respect the run. If we could just improve moderately next year in the run game, I think there is potential to really be an elite offense with the core offense. We may never know if they blow up the offense by letting the players go or putting in a new offense.

Please never bring up Leeman Bennett again.
I still have PTSD from that time in my life.

What I like about Bowles is that he’s calculated. He’s not reactionary as to what all of us fans want. We want excitement and splash, it keeps us on the edge of our seats. Bowles has the mentality of a field general. He’s stubborn, but knows the objective and how to get it done, his way. I respect that even though we want decisions and certainty for next season done today.
