Pro Bowl Quarterback Baker Mayfield

January 30th, 2024

“I told you this could happen, ‘Bake!'” (A Tampa Bay Buccaneers photo.)

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield just joined an exclusive club this morning.

Per Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com, Mayfield, along with left tackle Tristan Wirfs, was named to the Pro Bowl in Orlando as replacements for Dak Prescott and Trent Williams, respectively, in this week’s exhibition.

Williams, of course, is playing in the Super Bowl. Joe isn’t sure where Prescott is playing.

Man, talk about a home run signing. Last offseason Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was mocked for signing Mayfield. He returned the favor by making the Pro Bowl. All of Licht’s free agent signings should turn out so well.

No wonder Dave Canales got hired by the Stinking Panthers. If he can turn around a guy from a backup to a Pro Bowl quarterback, imagine what he can do for Bryce Young.

Mayfield joins exclusive company. The last time the Bucs had a Pro Bowl quarterback was when Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, got to the Pro Bowl after the 2015 season.

That makes three Bucs players named to the Pro Bowl. Mike Evans, who led the NFL in touchdown catches with 13, also made the Pro Bowl.

the probowl is lame but the winfield snub still grinds my gears

  2. realistic-optimistic Says:

Now Joe likes the Pro Bowl?

  3. optimisticbucsfan Says:

PAY THE MAN! The team is nothing without a QB.

  4. UGotRobbed Says:

Good for all those Bucs that made it (should have been more)! Pro Bowl voting is a joke…as well as the “game” itself !

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Pro bowl elections mean little today.

  6. chickster Says:

It will be a mistake paying him to much

  7. D Cone Says:

Pro Bowl is no more than a Football American Idol. Doesn’t mean Dik replacing Dak.

  8. Capt.Tim Says:

    CONGRATS TO BAKER MAYFIELD!!!
You earned it sir. What a fantastic Season!
    Also congrats to Tristan Wirfs!
And huge shout out to Jason Licht.
The magnitude of acquiring our franchise QB for NOTHING cannot be overstated!!
Do you know the resources he saved us, by not having to trade up, spend a high pick, and waste years on some rookie who may or may not make the transition to the big leagues!!
He set us ahead years! We KNOW Baker can play. Just gotta build around him

Also congrats to Coaches Bowles and Canales. Both deserve huge credit.

GREAT DAY for the Buc Organization!
Joe, could you even imagine this back in July?
    I know I coundnt!

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

Are the same people who are saying being named to the Pro Bowl means nothing the same ones who went on and on about how great Kyle Trask looked in training camp and preseason? If they had a preseason Pro Bowl, Trask would’ve made it! Hahaha

  10. Brandon Says:

From the playcalling, to the play design, to the personnel groupings… it’s pretty apparent that Mayfield helped out Canales more than Canales helped Mayfield. Between Canales being over his head as an offensive coordinator and pretty much being over Bryce Young and his 5’9 head, the Panthers will probably be worse this season than this past season.

  11. catcard202 Says:

The Pro-Bowl is a joke…Getting names as alternate replacement means little, as the NFL needed warm bodies for the glorified circus schit-show the NFL has made the event into.

I’m happy for Baker & Wirfs, don’t get me wrong…but IMO, the NFL should just name the Pro-Bowl teams (1st & 2nd), then call it a day. Give recognition for a season of individual excellence & nice bonus bump of coin…& move on.

Can anyone really say they want to watch what the NFL has made of the Pro-Bowl???? I sure don’t… I’d rather watch old re-runs of the “Battle of the Network Stars” or early “American Gladiators”.

  12. Hodad Says:

Pro bowl? It’s a flag football game now.

  13. Popcorn Mike Says:

My question is, was Mayfield a bad QB before he came to Tampa. Mayfield was average this past season as the starting and inconsistent. I like Mayfield and hope the Bucs resign him but, am I missing something here. I listen to the media and NFL talking heads and they’re talking about Mayfield had his best year, he has earned a big time contract and his stats were better than Brady’s. So again my question is how good or bad was Mayfield before he came to Tampa.

  14. CHRISTOS Says:

Pro Bowl has lost its meaning. Its not what it used to be.
Its a popularity contest for fans that are not even watching games besides their own team. Further than that half the players are withdrawn every year.
I stopped care for it and stop watching it more than 15 years ago.
I dont understand all the fuss. Its only for media and social media to have something to talk about.

  15. Ron Berquist Says:

    Hilarious and justified~!

In a Perfect World Mayfield plants a Bucs flag on the Browns mid filed logo

  16. DBS Says:

Well who would have thought you stupid people would want to send your players out and risk injury that can end their next season or career. You must have been excited when Jensen was lost in practice before the season even started. Yes let’s risk it. If you don’t like it and don’t want to watch that is up to you. But I enjoy seeing our players in any football activities representing our team.

  17. Shane Callahan Says:

I was on here defending Baker during the preseason.

    Told you so. Ha!

  18. Tye Says:

The pro bowl has lost all it prestige years ago…
Years ago, only the best of the positions were selected BUT NOW, whoever will show up….

Case in point: ‘Quarterback, Jameis Winston, got to the Pro Bowl after the 2015 season.’
6 qbs backed out before Winston was offered….

  19. Paratrooper Buc Says:

We all know it’s a popularity contest that’s nice to have but not worth what it used to be years ago. It’s an “honor” but the least valued one. So grats but if they don’t go then that’s fine.

  20. Not Says:

Dak is going to join Tony Romo. Romo developed an exciting leisure routine for the weeks leading up to the Super Bowls of the past. I think it has to do with fishing and something else in Costa Rica.

  21. gotbbucs Says:

Not that exclusive, Jameis Winston once got invited.

Good for Baker. Now decline the invitation and carry on with life.

  22. gotbbucs Says:

Evans, Mayfield, and Wirfs should all boycott in support of Winfield laughably being excluded.

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

I respect Canalas. But the love here is off the charts!!!

Where was Canales when Baker was taking one of the sorriest franchises in the NFL to the playoffs? Where was Canales when Baker won round one in the playoffs the first time in DECADES the horrid Browns pulled that off?

A case could easily be made that Baker got Canales HIS job not the other way around.

A truly sensible view would admit that BOTH men benefitted from their relationship and it’s actually kind of pointless to worry about which one benefitted the most!

If people here and the Joe’s want to believe Canales made Baker…fine…but many of us simply disagree.

FACT- One of them had done it before…the other had not! Why do we assume the guy getting his first break having never lead an offense to the playoffs rather than a guy who actually did it on the field…for a SECOND TIME…long before Canales was ever consider for OC!

  24. BrianBucs Says:

Baker’s price just went up a little bit more

  25. Bojim Says:

Well I wanted him to boycott but why should he get some recognition?

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

BrianBucs is right Bakers $$$$$$$ went up hes a 30-35 mil QB now. Licht can get him for 3 year 100 mil 75 mil guaranteed if hes lucky or 5 year 150 mil 100 mil guaranteed. And then pray he doesn’t revert back to the other Baker.

  27. Gipper Says:

Feel good that Baker and Wirfs got the recognition they deserved. Wirfs made a difficult transition from right to left without missing a beat. Baker continues to get the recognition he earned this year by getting team close to NFC Championship round. Tampa should make Baker a substantial offer to keep in town for 5 years. Draft and FA need to be used to build stronger O and D lines. Hoping Evans is back as well. Baker to Mike is a strong connection that needs to be manitained.

  28. Davenport Says:

The Pro Bowl should have ended 20 years ago. There’s no point to it and alot of the most deserving players do not get selected or refuse to participate.

Just pick 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All-Pros. Reveal them at NFL Honors & be done with it

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

    Catcard202
Love the American Gladiator reference! I tried out for that show, at state fair grounds!
First few test were to get rid of Big guys. Smart. Protecting their gladiators.
Bummer though, I’d have killed on that Show! Lol!

    Go Bucs!
Congrats to Mayfield, Evans, and Wirfs!
    Still bummed no Winfield Jr.

  30. Bucfanfromday1 Says:

    Why so many Baker haters?
To appreciate his accomplishments, just pull up the historical list of our past QBs.
We only had 1 great one at the end of his career.
Baker is a player that is very talented and proved his value this year.
We are foolish if we let him leave!

  31. Jack Clark Says:

Baker Mayfield is now a Pro-Bowler? His price just went up 🙄

  32. Gerald Says:

Congratulations Baker, Bucc the haters 👏 👏 👏.

  33. adam from ny Says:

didn’t jameis go to the pro bowl one season……i think

  34. HC Grover Says:

Congratulations Baker, Bucc the haters 👏 👏 👏.

    Is that you GMC?

  37. BakerBucs Says:

When u hear bout the pro bowl u think cream of the crop at the very least every player shud look at this as a prize for the season & production u produced on & off the field this only helps u r reputation as a performer ask baker how he feels bout it I’m sure it’s a good upgrade on u r resume

  38. BakerBucs Says:

Dak Prescott ain’t going after that nasty performance in the playoffs

  39. Poindexter Says:

Joes information is incorrect. Tom Brady made the Pro Bowl as a starter in 2021!!!

  40. Joe Says:

Joes information is incorrect. Tom Brady made the Pro Bowl as a starter in 2021!!!

    He didn’t play.

  41. NE Fan Says:

Yes Joe, him and the elite QB’s usually don’t play like guys like Baker can feel good about himself. For crying out loud Mac Jones made the Pro Bowl.

  42. heyjude Says:

Love it! Congrats to Baker and Wirf.

  43. Jonzee Says:

For all the folks saying don’t overpay Baker, imagine a world where anyone with interest access can say the same about you and your job… Reality is your only expertise is being a fan. Pro athletes have earned their way to that spot, The normal attrition we’ll retire them when they can no longer achieve. Stop hating on the man and allow him to earn the money he is qualified for….

  44. Gipper Says:

    Jonzee,

They don’t really hate Baker. They have a lot of their ego tied up in being “analysts” who have been critical of Baker. They have gone
after him all season much like they constantly berate Coach Bowles. When Baker gets named to the Pro Bowl the result is predictable. The Pro Bowl means nothing, Trask should be in the Pro Bowl and on it goes. Best thing for Baker is to get a 5 year payday from Pittsburgh. Maybe he can bring ME13 along as well.

  45. Eric Says:

Must have been a coin flip between him and Trask.

  46. Premiumsmooth Says:

The pro bowl matters to the players! Contracts have incentives built into them. regardless of what you think about how the pro bowl is become it matters a great deal. Especially to a quarterback that continues to have haters? You guys don’t appreciate what you’ve got. Lol.

  47. BucaneroJim Says:

Congrats to Baker!… he goes to the Pro-Poke Bowl in Orlando on International Drive. NFL players will check down wait-staff by waving flags for ahi tuna. Baker will throw wasabi balls at the competing rushers wanting to finish eating first. The first player to eat his last tiny piece of rice with chopsticks wins! Las Vegas odds on Wirfs winning is pretty high – 33:1.

Roger Goodell will award the a raku pottery winner trophy filled with mung bean sprouts. Next year, the Japanese NFL games start.

  48. Marky Mark Says:

Resume builder but Bakes deserves it.

  49. Marky Mark Says:

The problem with the pro bowl is the violent nature of American Football. Baseball invented all star games and except being hit by a pitch it is non contact. Basketball can have some jarring contact but in the NBA all star game there is an unwritten no defense and no taking charges. Same with hockey no checking. Soccer no slide tackles or cleats up.

  50. JOSE BUC Says:

now I’ve heard everything.. NFL fans claiming ‘pro bowl selection’ isn’t an accomplishment… silly folks get over yourselves, you were wrong.

And to mr mayfield, job well done

  51. JK Says:

Alex, I’ll take How to make Million$ on your day off for $1000 please

Sadly, for you, Bake will return to the AFC on a franchise contract.
    All I’ll share for now.

  52. Florida Rocks 77 Says:

When Baker is playing in the pro bowl next year wearing some other teams uniform you all will be saying man I wish we had a pro bowl QB.

  53. WyomingJoe Says:

    A few things:

Congratulations Baker. This is well deserved.

He should have made the Pro Bowl in 2020!

He should have won Rookie of the Year in 2018, but finished in 2nd place. This is after breaking Peyton Manning’s record for most TD’s by a rookie. And Baker did it in 13.5 games.

He was NEVER a backup QB. Anyone who thinks that is either an idiot or a Hater.

Get him a Center and Guard and he might make All-Pro.

To all the Baker Haters out there, YOU CAN SHOVE IT!

  54. WyomingJoe Says:

NE FAN: You continue to be the third biggest a-hole on this site. I know that with hard work you can be #1 next year.

There is nothing Baker can do including winning Super Bowls with the Steelers to shut up the haters. Basic problem with the haters is their own lack of accomplishment in just about everything.

  56. WyomingJoe Says:

    Well said Gip.

  57. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

More like excluding popular vote club.

Good for Baker, he deserved it, surprised he didn’t get it outright with the cult following of middle aged male cheer leaders he has voting for him. What a wonderful day for the fanboi pep squad.

  58. JOSE BUC Says:

Russian trolls make wonderful American football critics 🧐 and they obviously don’t like baker. A real bucs fan has very little to complain about when it comes to their 2023 qb

  59. Ralph Cramden Says:

“If he can turn around a guy from a backup to a Pro Bowl quarterback”

Don’t praise Baker Mayfield. You don’t believe in his skills and ignore the fact that the Browns stabbed him the back and made the biggest blunder in pro football by giving up their future trades to give the Masseuse Molester a quarter of a billion dollars guaranteed.

Baker Mayfield is one of the best quarterbacks the Bucs ever had and you choke on that fact and kick dirt on his shoes instead of recognizing the true value of a superb leader of men. Disgusting.

  60. Critmark Says:

I am not sure why people say the Pro Bowl is nothing. From a sporting event perspective, it is not much. But from a recognition perspective, it is something. It says, from a performance perspective, your selection means you played well and better than those who did not get selected. In fact, that is a typical bonus metric in contracts that have such things.

I am not saying it means you are the be all to end all, just that is does hold some value. I think most players would rather be selected to the Pro Bowl than not, even if they don’t want to play in the game.

I am happy for both players.
