Mike Evans On Baker Mayfield’s Status

January 5th, 2024

Baker Mayfield analysis.

We should learn today what’s going on with Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Injured last week in the groin stomp to the slimy Saints, Mayfield suffers from “sore” ribs. Sore enough that on Wednesday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles didn’t know if Mayfield would play in a do-or-die game at Carolina on Sunday.

(On Monday, a day after the game, Bowles was adamant that Mayfield would “be fine” for Sunday.)

Mayfield also saidWednesday that he had additional tests on his ribs and they were not broken or fractured.

Yesterday after practice, Bucs future Hall of Fame receiver Mike Evans said when Mayfield did practice, he didn’t notice a difference in his throws.

“I mean, he looked normal when he was in there,” Evans said of Mayfield. “He was throwing the ball great, [and] hit me a stride a couple of times today. He looked normal.”

How much Mayfield threw is unknown, other than it was a third down/period drills. Did he get better as he warmed up? Did he grow worse?

If you take Evans’ words at face value, then that means Mayfield’s availability for Sunday is a great bet. However, after Mayfield takes a couple of hits, how will he be then?

Of course, it’s kill or be killed Sunday. If the Bucs win, they host a playoff game next week. If the Bucs lose, locker clean-out day will be Monday.

And who knows who else may have to vacate One Buc Palace?

Mayfield will play Sunday, they don’t wanna see what Trask can do in a game much less a do or die game.

  2. EC Buc Says:

Baker rakes in a mil if he plays and wins. lol. Kinda an incentive to gut it out.

  3. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    @Conner50

Totally agree. Baker will play. If Bucs had not crapped the bed last Sunday with 4 turnovers, Trask likely would start this Sunday. It would have been nice to see him in a full game albeit without the starters but nice to see what he can do in 60mins.

  4. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Mayfield will be fine. His game didn’t really go downhill with a partial tear to the labrum. After Watt totally tore it and Baker started wearing that stupid brace….noticeably downhill every game after.

  5. Boss Says:

problem is…..when BM starts…..the way the bucs like to play tight games….if Trask has to come in it will likely be too late.

well, at least we would get the flush win/win i guess.

Yea I’d like to see our 2nd round draft pick finally play a full regular season game with the starters, or at least a good bit of starters. Practice is a lot different than an actual game, he did great in preseason too. Tampa should’ve took care of the saints but they blew that.

  7. Trask To The Future Says:

Baker will definitely play and once again put up one his stellar barely-100 yards passing first half games.

    LET KYLE TRASK PLAY!

  8. go dawgs Says:

Thank god the season won’t be wasted watching Trask poop his pants…

  9. Proudbucsfan Says:

Baker Mayfield had proven to me that he could make the throws needed to help this team win and he’s taking care of the ball all season. I’m not a Trask lover but I don’t understand all the hate for the kid. No one knows what he can do because he hasn’t had a chance, he played quite well in the pre season. You people that talk trash about the man are just puking up pure hate. I’m not saying Kyle is going to be great but how stupid would you feel if he went to another team and became a top 5 Quarterback ?

    @go dawgs
    Roll tide

I don’t get it either, he was a 2nd round pick and you never pick a 2nd rd qb to never play him. They are obsessed with baker for some reason not sure why, being that he still hasn’t proved to be the franchise guy. They act like Trask is the worst qb in the nfl and he hasn’t even played a full game with the starters. He probably will go to another team I doubt Tampa will ever use him, which I hope he does go somewhere and succeed so they do look like fools. It’s happened more than once for the Bucs

  12. Robbie Says:

Mayfield is starting because he’s a greedy mf I can’t wait for kyle to get to about team next year, say Carolina panthers and take them all the way and kick the crap out of Bowls and Baker. But we all know now for certain the nfl is rigged, all of it. Now we are just watching a seasonal TV show

  13. Kevin Says:

Baker Mayfield is the future at Tampa Bay.

  14. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Bowles isn’t putting his future in the hands of a qb with 0 starts sorry ain’t happening

  15. Georgia Redneck Says:

The Falcons will take a look at Trask if he becomes a free agent. I don’t think the Bucs are dumb enough to trade him to a division rival.

  16. m milligan Says:

After the game plan and sht show last wk, I hope they’ve got their sht together.
Makes no difference who’s QB with another display like last wk.
You can’t go to Trask in must win last game of season when he hasn’t taken a snap. Be offensive penalties out the arse. Get out in front early!!!!!!!!!
    Go bucs

  17. m milligan Says:

And don’t turn the ball over 4 times

  18. Don'tBmad Says:

    Trask is trash….
    Not even trade bait

  19. garro Says:

And folks had this question for our Pro Bowl WR? About the dude who helped him get the numbers needed? And they expected him to say what exactly?

I am assuming someone asked Mike about Baker. I find it hard to imagine he volunteered that tidbit.

“Yes he was definitely off today”… Really? LOL

Media folks questions kill me sometimes.

    Go Bucs!

  20. Mark Says:

The problem with rib injuries is they are connected to the mid back. Injections help and eventually will work out the calcium build up that occurs between the facit vertebras after the injury.
