Key To A Bucs Win: Blitz The Snot Out Of The Stinking Panthers

January 6th, 2024

Key to a win?

Earlier this week, Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian noted the Stinking Panthers may have the worst pass-blocking offensive line he has seen in years.

In particular, Polian said the Stinking Panthers simply cannot handle blitzes.

NFL analyst Matt Bowen of BSPN agrees. In typing for the four-letter.

Key to victory: Heat up Carolina quarterback Bryce Young.

I would look for Bucs coach Todd Bowles to bring heavy pressure this Sunday after I watched the Week 13 Carolina-Tampa Bay tape. The Tampa Bay defense had a blitz rate of 54.3% and pressure rate of 40% in that game, while also producing four sacks.

The Bucs featured disguised blitzes that can create a four-strong, overload scheme with linebackers and defensive backs. And they used that pressure to speed up the clock for Young while also impacting his eye level in the pocket. Young completed 48.4% of his passes in that loss to Tampa Bay, finishing with a QBR of 18.4. And his 7.7 QBR against pressure this season ranks 28th out of 30 qualified quarterbacks.

Well, if the Bucs blitz defensive backs, that tells Joe that Antoine Winfield should be in the Carolina backfield more than a couple of times tomorrow.

And yeah, if Devin White is motivated, he too should be used on blitzes early and often.

If the Bucs lose, Joe doesn’t know if Big Storm Brewery has enough beer available in its coolers.

Welp – one thing’s for sure. After all of the Pro Bowl snubs and that Saints beat down last week you’d expect a pissed off Bucs team to tee off on the Panthers tomorrow!

  2. realistic-optimistic Says:

What good is blitzing if they don’t get home? Even worse, Bowles likes to blitz while his DBs give 10+ yard cushions. Why would a QB sit back and wait for the blitz to get home when he has open targest as soon as the ball is snapped?

  3. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’d blitz the corners with heavy doses of deva. They have a hard time covering anyone so make them useful in other areas. For heaven’s sake stay away from that tampa 2 lawn chair charmin soft zone anti-coverage. The one where tight ends are running wide open up the gut. expect Carolina to pound that rock up the middle with 190 pound chuba like last time. So using run blitzes may be what the doctor orders on this one. But what the heck do I know…..

  4. Beeej Says:

I had decided Shaq was useless, THEN I watched last week’s game. I’m sorry Shaq

  5. D Cone Says:

I thought I heard D White blitzed on 60% of his snaps vs Jax so 54.3 seems about right. Blitzing between 50% and 60% is Bowles tendency like running up the gut. Two things you can figure on and plan for.

  6. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Double V has got to show up and dominate this time. Not the all smiley, lovey dovey, double v. The angry one. He will be key to the whole thing. Go Bucs.

    Facts Beeej

  8. realistic-optimistic Says:

Shaq is still good against the run. However, I’m not seeing much from him as a pass rusher. Somehow PFF has given him a higher Pass Rush grade this year (84.3) than they did in his 19.5 sack 2019 season (82.0). I don’t really understand how they got there.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Expect Devin White to blitz often & do well Sun

  10. Beeej Says:

Shaq gets home often enough to upset the qb’s rhythm, unLIKE JTS, who’d only get there if he was delivering a pizza

  11. HC Grover Says:

LOL send in Plan 9 From Outer Space.

  12. NE Fan Says:

Good idea that way they can run down Bucs throat like they did last time.

  13. Mike Says:

Bucs will lose to the panthers. Mayfield will try to play with injured ribs and will not be productive.

  14. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

NE Fan. Your fossil has retired after spending last year throwing the ball in the dirt at his feet. Time to go back to Patriots’ sites.

  15. sasquatch Says:

It would be very un-Bowles-like to actually attack an opponent’s weakness.

  16. BAKERSBucs says Says:

the promise land on sunday litem up fellas

  17. Proudbucsfan Says:

Mike you pin pointed it good observation, it depends on how the shot takes affect sometimes it doesn’t num like it’s supposed to and he will feel a lot more then he should. I have the same feeling it’s going to be a disaster.

  18. orlbucfan Says:

NEFart, get lost! What’s the matter? Your team stinks so bad, you have to ‘lower’ yourself to bug us on here? Devin White better show up tomorrow. He needs all the decent tape he can get to sell himself to his new team. As usual, I’ll be paying attention to Canales, and hoping a few O captains stuck a few feet up his green azz. Go Bucs!

  19. NE Fan Says:

Oralbuc, as usual you will be focusing on Canales? Who gives a flying frock? Please report your findings as we are so looking forward to you expert opinion. Joe, where do you get these guys?

  20. Mark hardt Says:

Be aggressive on both sides. No huddle first possession and beginning of 2 Q

  21. Tony marks Says:

The problem with blitzing as the main weapon on defense when your seondary is awful is pretty obvious

even the best rush doesn’t get to the qb even 30% of the time. Meanwhile a young Qb can take some hits so all he needs is a couple deep plays against swiss cheese to change the direction of a game.
