“I Thought I Did The Dumbest Thing… “

January 30th, 2024

Regretful.

Either Bucs fans are hounding this man mercilessly, or the guy’s conscious is bothering him. Or perhaps how he strives for accuracy is keeping him up at night all twisted up in a knot.

And that man would be figure-skating-admiring, dishwasher etiquette-instructing, redshirt-quarterback-annoyed, anti-public-pot-smoking, cognac-splurging, clock-shopping, Olympics-flag-football-frowning, Concrete Mixer-spilling, Mother Jones-reading, airport-pianist-listening, Twitter-revolting, Purdue-basketball-confused, combine-fatigued, Bavarian-pretzel-chomping, teeth-brushing, haircut-fascinated, Circa-bewildered, elf-rattled, green-lawns-frowning, soggy-socks-wearing, Daylight-Savings-Time-scared, crossword-puzzle-puzzled, Elon-Musk-peeved, Barstool-Sports-triggered, almond-milk-sipping, hot-dog-eating-contest-protesting, mock-draft-scowlingL.L.-Bean-wearing, tennis fans’ advocate, Second Amendment abolitionistMike-Florio-arguingparrot-insensitivechewing-with-his-mouth-opensoup-gulpingCalifornia-train-romancing, anti-football proliferationouthouse-admiringairline-nappingsteerage-flyingYogi Berra-worshipingurinal-picture-takingvideo-game-playingTaylor-Swift-listeningpickpocket-thwartingBucs-uniform-frowning, Allie LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hatingpedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerking, craft-beer-chugging, cricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball-box-score-readingNPR-honkfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training, Budweiser-tolerantbaseball-scorecard-keeping, pasta-feasting, vomit-dodging scrooge, Kay-Adams-following, Coors-Light-souring, pineapple-upside-down-cake-eating social activist and NFL insider Peter King, of NBC Sports fame.

So what has King all twisted up? Well, before the season, when the Bucs announced they had signed Baker Mayfield to replace Tom Brady, King immediately said Mayfield was a “bridge” quarterback and that bridge led to Caleb Williams (#CollapseForCaleb), Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.

Instead, the Bucs were a timeout and a play away from playing in the NFC championship game.

King has already issued a mea culpa as the Bucs won the NFC South and Mayfield had a career year. Apparently, that was not enough.

King took to his “Football Morning in America” column yesterday to once again admit he was wrong. Way wrong.

I thought I did the dumbest thing in the entertainment sphere this season by projecting the Bucs to be the 31st team in the NFL.

King then compared his error to movie awards and Hollywood people. That lost Joe. Then again, Joe is not a movie guy. Joe can remember going to five movies this century.

If a movie isn’t about history or war, or isn’t about sports, Joe pretty much has no use for it. Joe would much, much, much rather watch a documentary or a war movie for the 30th time.

Maybe if the Bucs win a Super Bowl in 2024, a movie could be made about it and a scene would include King’s 2023 prediction for the Bucs.

Joe would watch it!

CONSIDER THIS ABOUT PETER KING …

100% of US sports commentators hated the Bucs preseason. They laughed hysterically and shamelessly at Baker Mayfield. The Bucs were going to be a disaster without the GOAT. 19 weeks later, they are madly in love with Baker and the Bucs. They compared him to TB12, Mahomes, and acted like the tar and feathering never happened.

Peter is the only one to call himself out. It’s pretty solid (with a hint of megalomania).

  2. Beeej Says:

Those who look at Baker as a “bridge QB”, is it because his performance wasn’t good enough this year, or because they think it was a fluke?

  3. J Says:

With Baker I see us picking 26th in the draft the next two years.

  4. Bucnjim Says:

So many experts & fans would rather be right than say they were wrong about Mayfield and the Bucs. I was optimistic about the signing, but to say we got lucky just isn’t the case. I’ll take a QB like Mayfield any day. He has the Jensen attitude that rubs off on everyone else on the team.

  5. Bojim Says:

When his name was mentioned as a possible QB for tge Bucs I was hoping we were able to sign him. I thought he was good for 6 or 7 wins. What a nice surprise. Now we have our QB.

  6. DungyDance Says:

Joe, I’ll forgive you for not going to many movies this century if you at least went to one last century. And if that one wasn’t Airplane!, then I mist trot out a line I once read someplace recently…”you need to look in a mirror…”

  7. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I don’t know why everyone here hates King. He became as big as he has for a reason: he’s an excellent writer. He has opinions and makes predictions that end up being wrong, like everyone else. At least he owns up to them.

When Mike Florio’s website was just a wordpress blog that he owned, King was the first writer in the “real” media to take note of how good Florio is. He’d prop him up a lot. He does that with scores of writers. Every FMIA piece he writes touts other writers’ work.

    He’s a good genuine dude.

  8. It's Corn Says:

One pre-season poll (sports illustrated? idr) had the Bucs at #32. So tell Pete King that would have been at least a little bit dumber than him.

“Instead, the Bucs were a timeout and a play away from playing in the NFC championship game.”

    ***

Can you knock it off with this inaccurate horsecrap? Or at least change it to “One timeout, one fluky missed Detroit field goal, one highly unlikely long touchdown with no timeouts, and one two-point conversion away from TYING the game that would’ve given us a 50-50 shot of playing in the NFC Championship game”.

    Agreed.
You have to forgive this Joe.
He gets a little bit carried away with himself sometimes.
Always carry a grain of salt while on this site

  11. BrianBucs Says:

Still the very best Bucs football site though

  12. ATLBuc Says:

He’s lost credibility among Bucs fans

This Joe’s culture aversion always amuses me. I love movies. That includes some war movies. I also love documentaries. This includes some war documentaries. My goodness though, there’s so much more to learn about and be entertained by. Not just war. But I digress. And I also agree with those above who mentions this Joe’s rather disingenuous characterization of how close we were to possibly winning that playoff game. Yes, if absolutely everything went right for us. And absolutely everything went wrong for the Lions at the end we might have had a chance. A small one. But those things didn’t happen. Get over it already.

  14. Fansince76 Says:

The guy should just retire already.

  15. WillieG Says:

The last movie I saw in a theater was when I took my niece to see The Lord of the Rings. Yeah, I’ll skip the theater and most current movies as well.

I’m like you Joe. I love military history, and movies. I’m also an avid reader. I’m currently reading Masters of the Air. I’m also watching the series because I have Apple TV. lol

If you like to read, I highly recommend Fierce Valor about Captain Ronald Speirs of Band of Brothers fame. Those stories soldiers told about him in the series? Tip of the iceberg. Spiers was crazy and bad AF.

  16. Brandon Says:

Just because a guy writes about football, that doesn’t mean the guy actually knows about football. Sometimes they do, often times they don’t. Just like anybody else that watches football religiously… that doesn’t mean they know the first thing about the game.

  17. Duane in Sanford Says:

Every season, there is a Cinderella team. Its always en vogue to pile up on the team that loses the key veteran, and we moved on from The Goat. Shame on them for continuing to not recognize the greatness of Mike Evans, or the fact that we have a young roster filled with guys with playoff experience. Think about it.

  18. garro Says:

Wow…This dude is the best exapmple I can think of, of how awful “journalism” has gotten. Say some outlandish ill informed BS full of falshoods and when low and behold you are proven wrong and should be sued for liable…. come out the other side and milk that BS for even more clicks.

This is what it’s come to….Geez!

    Go Bucs!
