Edge Todd Bowles Versus A “Simple And Predictable” Offense

January 8th, 2024

It’s a mastermind game coming next Monday for Bucs head coach/defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

That was the message today from Richard Sherman, the former Bucs, 49ers and Seahawks cornerback.

Sherman was on FS1 talking about the Bucs-Eagles playoff matchup and noted that his path to a Bucs postseason victory comes through Bowles.

Per Sherman, the Eagles have a “very simple” and “predictable” offense, which means advantage Bowles. Sherman talked about how Bowles schemes as good or better than any coach he’s been around and the Bucs have a complex system with the experience and talent to execute. He also noted that the Eagles offense has been figured out by the NFL since their loss to the 49ers six weeks ago.

Sherman’s other key to a Bucs victory is the offensive line holding up in pass blocking to spring Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

The only team the Bucs beat that was over .500, was the wounded Jaguars.

  2. NE Fan Says:

Sherman is hitting the Clorox can. Bowles hasn’t masterminded anything since 2020 SB.

  3. SteelStudBuc Says:

Bucs beat the Packers. They’re a playoff team.

  4. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

We have a shot, can’t ask for much more this year.

  5. BucsFan81 Says:

I would agree with Sherm if Arians was still the HC and Bowles was the DC and just focusing on defense but this is not 2020 or 2021. Often times Bowles gets out coached and is in over his head.

  6. ElioT Says:

Worried mostly about the offensive line’s protection, lack of pass rush and running game.

    Other than that, we’re good!!!

Listening to Eagles podcasts, and one of them said that after watching the Bucs the last two weeks, that a Bucs-Eagles game will set back offenses in the NFL by 50-years.

Also on a different show they gave their thoughts on Baker after watching him play – their analysis was, “he sucks.”

Yes, I know Baker Bois, that what people say is meaningless, and I agree – I just like to hear them whine and cry after loses. But it is still interesting to see what opponents fans, who don’t see the Bucs week in and week out, think of the team. And while they thought the Bucs defense is good, none of them are scared of the Bucs offense, outside of Evans.

  8. Troy Smitson Says:

Glad we had a winning season. Nobody predicted we would. Not sure which Buc team will show. Hopefully, the one that showed up against the Packers.

Negative nellies jump right in with the first two posts. Nothing like always pointing out flaws without EVER pointing out success.

These guys are so good with the compliments I can imagine them telling their prom dates, “geez for fat girls you don’t sweat much.”

    A “Simple And Predictable” Offense

He’s talking about the Bucs offense right

  11. Rob Says:

If Davis III is on the bench, the defense will have a chance. That guy can’t cover and won’t tackle.

  12. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Are you people so dumb that you can’t count. The Bucs beat 3 teams with winning records: Green Bay, Jacksonville, New Orleans & would have won a 4th if the defense didn’t blow the game to Houston.

    Buc Profit learn to count.

I don’t know, I hope he’s right. Bowles is notorious for giving away games in the last minute or two with garbage zone prevent defenses. He’s going to get another year, but I’d replace Bowles. He’s not a good head coach and makes too many mistakes that lose games. The refs are a wildcard in every playoff game. Some team is going to get the zebra shaft broke off in them. I hope for once it’s not the Bucs and Philli gets it from the officials. NFL officials are in total garbage. They will 100% guaranteed, determine the outcome of playoff games. They have no reason not to do what they want. There’s no accountability for refs. The commissioner needs to be replaced.

Saints game – Davis is out with an injury
    Panthers game – Davis starts

What game went well, which one didn’t?

Davis is the teams best corner, by far, and with the Bucs recently playing more man-to-man, like they did in 2020, you need him out there if you want any chance of winning this game.

The Bucs chances of winning this game ride with Baker Mayfield. If he is on target with his passes the Bucs can win. The problem is he is injured and has not played well the past two weeks with sore ribs and now a bad ankle. That does not bode well for the Bucs. Hopefully Baker can pull the game of his life out of his arse and the Bucs can win and advance.

True, if Baker again has 50 yards passing at the half and is missing wide open WRs, then it doesn’t matter what the defense does.

But if good Baker decides to show up, then the Bucs certainly would have a chance, but still need their defense to do its job, and having Davis out there is huge.

I have the utmost respect for Sherman as a player, but he has said some stuff lately that is just plain ignorant. Like maybe he took to many shots while playing.

Hyping Bowles supposed genius… Really? I might agree if his defense could get off the field a bit more regularly before the fourth quarter. Please dont include stats from the Carolina “shutout”. That was pathetic. Bowles should give AWJ half of his pay check for this year.

Pass Blocking? Not so good lately…Just saying.

    Go Bucs!

  18. Ed Says:

High energy, effort, fast starts. Can the Bucs do that in a playoff game. They must come at Philadelphia with some offensive chuck plays. Trying to win the time of possession battle hasn’t worked this year has it Todd?

They need to split R White out and keep Kleft in to block and help out on the inside rush. White is as good at catching the ball as anyone on that team. Instead of running him into tight spots where he tries to stop and go, get him the ball on swing passes and screens on second down.

Look for Evans and Godwin on first down. Junk the running game except in the second half when the defense of the Eagles is tired but at the beginning ot the game they should have a 2 pass to 1 run ratio to keep the Eagles off balance.

Hope Sherman is right. Pass defense is close to worst in the league. Doesn’t bode well for when they got brown n smith who are really good WR. Even if they haven’t played will over the past month all it takes is for them to click and boom. I hope we eat those eagles for dinner. They’re the defending NFC champ and I expect them to bring it. Hope the Bucs are on their A game

D and ST will be ready. Question marks are QB and OC gameplan. Fingers and toes x’ed for my Bucs! 🙂

  22. BillyBucco Says:

Eagles have been bad but that is with a SB projection.
They are still light years ahead of where the Bucs are.
Playoff games are like the Michigan/Washington game last night.
    The trenches wins the game.
    Michigan had it, Washington didn’t.
Last game against Philadelphia they were banged up also.
Maddox was out for the year, their CBs were reeling and it didn’t matter because Baker was under pressure. Stinnie actually makes passing the ball worse because Feiler is a better pass blocker.
Im not falling for the injury bait this time.
The Bucs have a chance because it is a playoff game, but I give them about a 15% chance honestly.

  23. MikeH Says:

When your offense and defense are outclassed, look for the penalty yardage climb. Also, kills offensive drives.

    Sherman’s a Buc! I like this dude!
Oh well, if we win or lose, we got here. We’ll find out on Monday night if we have what it takes to make a run. One game at a time though, and it sure would be nice to knock off the Eagles.
