Bucs Now Need A Wide Receivers Coach

January 30th, 2024

Gone.

Joe saw this one coming right down Central Avenue.

New Carolina coach/old Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales made his first big hire in Carolina. He pulled Bucs wide receivers coach Brad Idzik from Tampa Bay as his new right-hand man.

That’s the word from Jeremy Fowler of BSPN.

When Canales came from Seattle to the Bucs, he brought Idzik with him. The two are tight so this was not a surprise in any way.

How close are Canales and Idzik? Hours before The Licht House gates were open to the public at home games, it wasn’t unusual to see Canales and Idzik running stadium steps.

So whomever the Bucs hire for offensive coordinator to replace Canales, he’ll have to find a wide receivers coach as well.

Idzik is the son of former Bucs assistant general manager John Idzik.

Joe is wondering what other Bucs assistants Canales will pluck?

    Dayum.

  2. realistic-optimistic Says:

Obviously. Canales brought him here from SEA. Of course he brought him to CAR. Nothing unexpected about this.

  3. BrianBucs Says:

We all saw this one coming.
Now we will see if any other Bucs coaches join him.

  4. 941bucsfan Says:

Canales also lived in his house when they first got to tampa. Easy to see this coming

  5. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I think the fact that the Glazer Boys have not given Todd Bowles any kind of ringing endorsement after next year or extended him, alot of current and potential assistant/position coaches might not want to stick around to see what may happen after next year.

  6. Bojim Says:

Get em all Dave. Show your gratitude.

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

Bad move for Idzik because Canales is going down hard. Carolina has a garbage owner. Canales is over his head, not a great OC and will be lucky to last a whole season. Raheem on the other hand, will kick butt and probably win the division.

  8. Paratrooper Buc Says:

I hope people are aware why Canales left. Frank Reich had a 4 year deal for 9 million a year that was guaranteed. So that’s not even a year of work for 36 million. So Canales buddies from Seattle are the new panthers GM and Idzik is now his OC. Any of us would have jumped at a multimillion dollar deal for 4 years. I don’t blame Canales for that and even if he gets fired he will still have tens of millions and offers for a new job. The bucs need to get a new OC who will most likely bring a crew of coaches to fill positions. We all just need to hope it’s an improvement.

Ben Johnson for head coach 2025

  10. geno711 Says:

Bucs assistant Mike Chiurco, who spent four years as assistant to the head coach and moved into a defensive role this past season, is no longer with the organization. Came in with Bruce Arians in 2019.

Wonder if he is the guy that lost track of the defensive timeout at the end of the Detroit playoff game.

Bowles never called anyone out and stood up and said it did not matter, I do put blame on Bowles for not calling the TO. But I wonder if this is the guy who lost track as well.

  11. Pickgrin Says:

-1st time “Offensive” HC who has 1 year of experience running an NFL offense
-1st time OC who has 1 year of experience as an NFL position coach
    -5′-10″QB
    -Lack of receiving weapons
    -Lack of high draft picks
-Inexperienced and impatient jerk of an owner who is so thin skinned he throws drinks on his paying customers

    What could go wrong?

  12. Boss Says:

panthers are going to be good.

    coaching matters.

panthers are going to be good.

I’ll check back with you in November. Pretty quick to jump on that Panthers bandwagon based upon two hires. Wow.

  14. infomeplease Says:

This could be a good thing, at least for a year or so. Idzik is green as far as calling plays. Unless DC plans on doing that. Time will tell.

  15. A Bucs Fan Says:

Canales will win maybe 4 games in 2024. It’s a total rebuild there.

  16. Jiminfk Says:

At least the Bucs still have Bowles. LOL

  17. infomeplease Says:

Geno, I had that same thought!

  18. Davenport Says:

Not surprising. Why would anyone stay with Bowles who’s in the middle of year to year uncertainty.

    And who would come?

Both have one thing in common, they are coaches with no other options.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bye

  20. Popcorn Mike Says:

Don’t think any other coaches are going to Carolina, knew that Idzik was going with Canales as was just said, Idzik was brought to Tampa by Canales as his right hand man. Pretty sure Bowles already has his replacement in the works.

  21. Bucfan Says:

At least the BUCS still have Bowles. LOL

  22. Drunkinybor Says:

(WE) paid that million? Sounds like stinky Don has found a new mistress. What a couple. Dumb and dumberer as she would probably say. Lib tears 😢 sounds more Like orange rain to me. 🍊 🌧

  23. Allbuccedup Says:

Tepper is a terrible owner to work for I don’t see much improvement in the Panthers this year. I don’t see much improvement in the Falcons either I mean Morris has got a worse career record than our buddy Bowles. So sign our FAs and we will battle the Saints again for the title.

  24. Drunkinybor Says:

Yikes disregard that comment please. Wrong forum. My bad

  25. Jack Clark Says:

Doesn’t the new OC, DC, or head coach usually clean house and hire whoever they want to be their assistants? I’m glad our former WR coach was able to get a better job after our OC left because he might have been on the street. Panthers fans should be happy a WR coach was hired to be their OC because he likely won’t be wasting first and second down running between the tackles.

  26. GhostofBrady Says:

You think it is bad for us, imagine how it is for Sean McVay. Every year other teams are picking off his Offensive Coordinator, QB coach and Pass Game coordinator to be their Head Coaches and OCs. Every year his QB Coach and Pass Game coordinator is interviewing to be HC or OC of another team.

There’s a reason the Bucs are going after coaches that have spent time in the Rams offensive staff. It appears to be working for the Bucs and the rest of the league wants in on it.

canales needs a friend in carolina…

he can’t stretch the little quarterback out by himself…

canales is convinced that during the off season, if one guy grabs bryce young’s arms and the other his legs, and they hold tightly and pull in opposite directions for one hour a day, (like a tug of war with a rope)…that little bryce young can be stretched out enough to become 2 inches taller…

sounds like a crazy canales x idzik plan to “grow the offense”…but i’ve heard of crazier things…

they are also going to force him to eat a diet of the o-linemen…so he can get off that “buck-ten soaking wet” weight…

maybe they’re as crazy as tepper

  28. kaimaru Says:

    @Scotty in Fat Antonio

Bowles has 3 years more on his contract…why would they extend him now???

  29. unbelievable Says:

    Not surprising at all.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Not actually a big loss. Godwin regressed under him, I believe.

  31. TonyC Says:

Any rats jumping ONTO the Buccaneers’ ship?

  32. GP Says:

    @geno
If that’s true I’ll lay off Bowles for it. Still don’t like the language of his explanation though, bad look.

In the meantime, I’ve got Jimmy Buffett’s “Fins” going through my head… It’s a coach ‘feeding frenzy ‘ going on right now.

A lot of teams are going to look very different next season!

  33. G Buc Says:

Hard pass on Idzik …not enough data to make any kind of decision.

  34. GP Says:

I’m afraid ‘free agency’ is going to be just as bad.

  35. Boss Says:

The only positive s ME might walk as well

  36. Ko Kiefer Says:

    They need another head coach

Fire Bowles, Promote Larry Foote to DC. Hire Monken or Johnson as head coach and get their offenses going. Let’s upgrade Glazers

  37. Tye Says:

‘Joe is wondering what other Bucs assistants Canales will pluck?’

OR how many are lobbying to Canales to get them out from under the losing curse of Bowles!

  38. Cobraboy Says:

    What is the big deal?

Canales’ offense was barely semi-decent. Barely, thanks to the talent, and there was an ugly crater in the middle of the season.

If Canales and his BFF can’t be replaced with something even marginally equivalent, the team deserves to crash and burn.

Heck, you want motivation? Hire Mariah DelPercio. SHE got more out of the team than Canales.

🙂 Nah man ya got to thimk NBA here

    Its all in the shoes

Think soul power and the 70s with platfrom shoes and Bryce be right.

  40. Tony marks Says:

Just make Baker the OC 🙂

Hury up offense would kill and lets face it . how many coaches been tutored under More OCs????

IF theres a playbook on Earth then Baker’s probably already seen it.

Just tell him if he calls his own number too much you will put in Trask and you’ll see a lot runs too.

  41. Bobby M. Says:

It’s interesting no teams have shown any interest in our defensive coaching staff….Bowles is supposed to be this defensive “guru” yet nobody is after his coaches. Meanwhile our offensive staff are getting offers to interview by multiple teams.

  42. Crickett Baker Says:

The Panthers are vying for the Saint’s place as my least favorite team in our division.

  43. First Name Greatest Says:

Canales might finish one season in Carolina good thing he has a 6 year contract

  44. Hodad Says:

It doesn’t seem to matter, because we might be running a whole new offense this year. Whoever our OC will be will probably want his own guy like Canales did.

  45. stpetebucfan Says:

    Cobra

Bingo. Thanks for helping battle some revisionist history here.

Of All the positions on the team WR is the least dependent on a coach.

ME13 and CG14 are grizzled vets who are also really decent dudes. I’m sure they worked with Palmer or anybody who asked for help. In fact one day I think CG14 would make an excellent coach after he hangs them up.

  46. Dave Pear Says:

The catching skills of Bucs pass catchers seemed to regress under Idjik. Maybe Jason will help Toadster find an assistant who can actually promote catching skills during practice.
