Bucs 9, Panthers 0; Tampa Bay Wins NFC South!

January 7th, 2024

The Bucs may not look like champions, but they absolutely are champions.

It’s official. At 9-8, Tampa Bay is the NFC South winner for the third consecutive year.

It was ugly today. Very ugly. Antoine Winfield Jr. saved the day with a raw hustle forced fumble at the 1 yard line following an embarrassing loaf by cornerback Jamel Dean. What a play it was by Winfield, so similar to his won’t-quit strip of Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder earlier this season.

Obviously, the Bucs defense was stout. A shutout is a shutout, even against a miserable two-win Panthers offense that was shut out last week. Hey, in late December, that same Panthers offense put up 30 points on Green Bay.

Hats off to Todd Bowles, YaYa Diaby, Lavonte David, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Winfield and friends for their showing.

On offense, well, Joe wants to puke. The Bucs are sure to talk about how Baker Mayfield was injured, but Joe would counter that he shouldn’t have been on the field, or that Dave Canales should have adjusted for Mayfield’s limitations. And the latter did happen a bit.

Regardless, it’s all history now. Bring on the Eagles (or the Cowboys) next weekend in the playoffs.

Do the Bucs look like a playoff team? The truth is coming soon.

    My condolences to Bucs fans;
We limped into the playoffs. What a the trash Baker is. 128 yards no TD’s playing the worst team in NFL with lucky bounces in Bucs favorite. Baker bad play and he starts limping what wimp. He is trash and play like trash the second week in a row.

Some of y’all are sad. Division championships are rare for this franchise!! 3 in a row is pretty dope! Baker is clearly hurting. Hopefully he continues to get well this week and I’m hoping we get the last game of wild card weekend. Any extra time to recover will help!

  44. Buc4evr Says:

  45. Brooklyn Born Says:

  46. D-Rome Says:

Baker Mayfield should be comeback player of the year. He will definitely be back. Over 4000 yards, 28 TDs. No team in the NFL would walk away from that. The slack jawed mouth breathers are going to have to cope, and that’s a beautiful thing.

At least they’re starting to gain something, ugly, but you can’t truly dominate the division without consistently winning it. A few changes here and there. Tweeks on the roster, maybe next year is prettier. More wins would be nice.

  57. Bucs 95 Says:

Were playing next monday night for sure the last 2 years the 4 and 5 have played monday

  58. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Status’s quo – play strong next week or rebuild. 9 wins and a division title is commendable, but not confident that we’ll improve much next year. Trying to stay positive, but that’s two awful offensive performances in a row.

  59. Angry Since Kickoff Says:

Uninspiring. “Champions” is not a word that should be used for 9-8 Division winners. There is one champion per season.

    That was gross.

  60. orlbucfan Says:

For once, I actually followed the jbf live game feed. All it did was prove to me how stupid/lucky team ownership is. The fans should own these teams cos we would be 1000% better at it. Proof? Green Bay Packers.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

Congrats to Bowles on sticking around for another year.

He should get credit for what he did, since during that losing streak, he FINALLY made some changes on defense and went away from the garbage zone and went back to a defense much closer to what they ran in 2020.

Most people didn’t really seem to notice, but that change, changed the season.

    They stunk up the place,
    Same look on Bowles face,

It really doesn’t matter, Bucs will be one and done

Faker showed who.he is, he chokes in big spots,
They’ll say he was injured, but really he’s not

So off to the playoffs, Bowles did it again,
Too bad the pr&%k has no idea how to win

Call him what you want, the man sheds no tears,
Guess what Bucs fans, he’s here four more years!!!

  68. David Says:

  70. Hammerhead Says:

Winfield could be NFC defensive player of the year and not be 1st. team NFC pro bowl. Amazing.

  71. Defense Rules Says:

MadMax … ‘Ugly win but its a win…and Baker played his a@ss off.’

Agree it was a win. Agree it was an ugly win. But ‘Baker played his a@ss off’? Sorry but he shouldn’t have been on the field. He passed for a total of 137 yards, mostly because he couldn’t throw deep. Only reason we won that game was because our defense played great against the NFL’s worst team. I can see LOTS of changes coming in the off-season.

  72. IrishTony Says:

Boy team just won the division and made the playoffs and folks are complaining? Anything can happen in the playoffs. Wouldn’t be totally surprised if we beat the Eagles next week. Anyway if you’re a “fan,” which I doubt most posters on this site are, you should be freakin happy (ugly or not).

Winfield better be an All-Pro! Unbelievable season.

YaYa looks like a draft steal, excited to see what Calijah does next season.

Another season at LT and Tristan will be pro-bowl. Still wish he could’ve stayed at RT, he made it look effortless and it was a beautiful thing to watch.

Holy hell our offense is flaccid. So Evans was doubled all day… why aren’t you scheming to Godwin every other play? How about passing to set up the run for a change? White out of the backfield instead of up the middle for 2 yards? Canales, you’re killing us!

  81. WyomingJoe Says:

D-ROME: We’ll said! Who cares what the score was because we won!

  84. David Says:

Baker had 4 near picks and two for sure. Baker kept throwing to the Blues as he thought was still plying for Panthers.

Toilet Bowl/Trash Baker might survive in Tampa if they win the first round. We are so lucky Panthers drafted Young instead of CJ Stroud. Panthers would have won this trash division for the years to come.

  85. m milligan Says:

Yes will have to be better next wk, what have they got to lose, turn it loose.
Congrats to BM on great season and his 1 mill payday.

I want you all to hear that and think of that as you lay down tonight and go to sleep.

  87. Stu Says:

  93. 1#bucsfan Says:

I’m glad we won the division for the 3rd time in a row. We’ve never done that before. The way the Bucs have played the past 2 weeks is unacceptable. If we play like that next week what’s the point of making the playoffs. The fans hollering about how we poor baker n the offense played today are just being realistic. This team is playing like trash. I’d rather us miss the playoffs then go and get embarrassed liked last year. It’s one thing to make it and play well but still lose it’s another if we play like we have the past 2 weeks and get embarrassed.

  94. NCBuc Says:

Better record than with Tom Brady last year. What an amazing season for so many players.

Brady locked it up in week 17 and put up 14 and more yards passing than Mayfield had in this game in the first half before leaving the game for back ups.

  96. NaplesBucsFan Says:

You all saying, how can you complain when the Bucs are division champs… HELLO, they were champs last year with a losing record and got their @sses handed to them by a true playoff team. I’d be shocked if they don’t get curb stomped next week and absolutely flabbergasted if they can somehow pull off an upset!!!!

So shut up with the how can a fan complain BS

  97. orlbucfan Says:

m milligan, love the positive vibes but Bucs have problems. One is an idiotic ownership who spend a lot of time in Europe. The dimwit OC keeps playing a QB who needs to benched cos of injury, not heart. It has been a LOT worse in the past. Panthers quit.

  98. Mord Says:

A hideous win. But a welcome win

    Winfield for DPOY

  99. Patrick in VA Says:

Worst possible outcome. They looked like a dumpster fire out there and barely had any business being on the field with the worst team in the league. All that winning the division got us was a worse draft pick. This is not a playoff team and winning today got us further away from being a legitimate playoff team next year

  100. Rod Munch Says:

Baker literally did everything he could today to lose this game today.

Thankfully the Bucs had Winfield and JTS on defense to secure the victory today.

Hopefully the non-trash version of Baker shows up next week since 40 yards passing per half isn’t going to get it done in the playoffs.

  108. NCBuc Says:

Oh so mean like the multiple interceptions other missed on your love child the past few weeks? That type of miss? Just curious

  109. BucNasty Says:

Before Brady we missed playoffs 13 years in a row. Before Brady our starting QBs were Jameis, Mike Glendon, and Josh Freeman. I’ll take Baker over those other QBs and I’ll take a playoff berth any way we can get it. We may lose in the first round, but these haters talk like we shouldn’t even show up and play. Sad thing is even if we somehow pull off a win next week, some “fans” will proceed to say “well they’ll definitely lost next week”. Please stop the loser mentality and enjoy our playoff appearance and celebrate our SUCCESSFUL SEASON!

  110. YaYa Winfield Says:

Hey George you a$$hat, Winfield made a play to force that fumble and the Bucs ran the clock out at the end when they could have easily score. Bucs won the game and you, Rod and David hate it. You guys should get together and suck a bag of Ds.

  115. David Says:

    You moron Baker fans,
Shut the hell up after another pathetic performance by your trash qb. Bucs would have lost to any other team other than stinking Panther with trash Baker scoring no td’s and 9 points. Bucs end up with the same record as Saints with another trash qb, Derek C.

  117. mark2001 Says:

poor baby. He won the dvision and there aint nothing going to take that away now. Need another box of kleenex?

better yet he sunk all your dreams of anywhere near a top pick. He’s probably done enough to secure Bowles for another years as well. Which good coach is coming here when he hears he has a startig QB of trask to run with?

at least the saints are not the division leader–that is heart warming, the Bucs are awful and will lose 1st round in playoffs and it will be a blow out

  131. Bucfan1988 Says:

Tony Marks, clown I’ve been cheering this team on for 35-36 years!!!!

    I don’t jump on band wagons, I create them…..

I’m glad the Bucs won, but I don’t want Bowles back next year or Baker resigned either….

Gimme Todd Monken as new HC and have him pick his DC…
    Draft Penix for QB….

  132. Bosch Says:

#FLUSH THE BOWEL MOVEMENT! Do it this week! Before the inevitable playoff disaster.

Come on Joe. Hats off to Bowles? Come clean with your hidden agenda. You pointed out yourself that Mayfield wasn’t physically up to it. Everybody watching could see it. You say that was Canales call to play him without adjustment? You know better. It was all Bowles

Let’s be realistic. The Bucs were a Winfield hustle miracle and an illegal formation call away from losing this game. This was as close to an embarrassing win as you can get.

I am calling you out Joe. You are not straight with your readers and you are a weak journalist.

  133. RGA Says:

Bucsfan1988, I agree, tickets sales will suffer if Bowles returns and/or Mayfield is back.

  134. Astralturf Says:

if the score should’ve been 17-9 panthers then you’re certainly not saying the bucs should be 8-9 because there were games the bucs could’ve won just like the panthers could’ve won this o e. So if the score could’ve been 17-9 panthers, what could the season record be? 9-8? 10-7? 8-9? 7-10?

  135. Daniel Dream Says:

    Step 1 accomplished!
Now let’s see of we can put it together now that it’s play-off time. This team’s biggest weakness has been inconsistent play- hopefully we can start cleaning that up immediately.
We were ‘expected’ by many to finish the season with 3 wins- but instead we improved from last season and won the division again. Overall, I’m feeling positive about the team going forward. A lot of work to be done, obviously, but things are trending up if we continue to improve. LETS F’N GO BUCS!

  136. Daniel Dream Says:

What’s with all the crazy people? We WON the division!!! Yet, I see ppl saying fire Bowles? They obviously aren’t Bucs fans. He’s kept this team together through tough times when other coaches mightve seen their players throw in the towel or check out- that’s a testament to the coach. This team has lost so many players in the last couple seasons and they’re still paying half of them- they had no money in cap space but they found a QB to get ME and CG the ball (both w/ 1k seasons) they did what they had to do to win the division. That’s a good job. You have to imagine next season the can put some $ into the O-line and where we need on defense and the future looks bright.

  137. Falconrap Says:

I find the Baker bros faith in him to be quite disturbing. Dude sucks. He should not have played today, and if the Panthers held onto those 3 picks, we would have lost and been out of the playoffs. I’m happy we won and that we are in (I don’t root to lose), but this performance by our starting QB is just one of a long line of crap performances. He missed Evans on long pass plays twice. Missed Palmer on one. Then, on one of his near picks, he had Palmer racing wide open deep on the left side of the field, but, nah, let’s throw into coverage short of the down line. Who needs a wide open TD anyway, of course, assuming he could even hit that pass with his ribs.

The only good thing about the win today was that it was over in 2 and a half hours. The NFL clearly wanted that game to end as soon as possible.

  138. maccafan Says:

First, I live in Charlotte and went to game today with friend who has season tickets. Actually for a 2-15 tea

  139. Daniel Dream Says:

Obviously we have to hope Baker is healthy next week if we want to have a chance to win- hopefully another week to heal will at least get him close enough to 100%. In any event, we did what we needed to to get the W today; that’s what matters. We needed this so as nor to waste what we’ve Bern able to do this season. We got the W and that’s what matters

  140. Daniel Dream Says:

I think maccafan was saying, for a 2-15 team the panthers have a surprising good defense. I believe they were 2nd all season in fewest yards allowed, and had the best pass defense in the league. How you go 2-15 with that, I don’t know.

  141. Bucs96NYC Says:

    Great timing by Licht 😭😂😂

  142. Jeffs grandpa Says:

It’s been 13 years since Bucs last shutout so be grateful not entitled

  143. Bosch Says:

Yes Daniel. REAL Bucs fans want Bowels fired because he is the worse HC in the NFL. Tell me, who would want that for a team you are a fan of? And just what are Bowles positive qualities. Is he a leader? Communicator? Great teacher? Straight shooter? Accountable? Humorous? Is he nice to his mom? According to you, a fan is required to like the HC no matter what. You make no sense.

  144. SlyPirate Says:

Dean was jogging behind the play.

I’ve been around JBF 10x longer than you kiddo, so you can save the fake fan nonsense. You appear too soft and sensitive to handle a dose of reality.

I won’t apologize for not celebrating mediocrity, nor a sub .500 coach is too stubborn and clueless to maximize the talents on his team.

  147. unbelievable Says:

Our only saving grace is that the Eagles look even worse than us right now, so we might actually have a chance. Then again, the Bucs are the team that historically every other team always “gets right” against… so who knows.

I would love to celebrate right now, but barely beating the worst team in the league just doesn’t feel like a triumphant victory. A lot will depend on whether LVD, White, and Mayfield are actually healthy in another week, and more importantly- whether Todd Bowles and Dave Canales get actually pull the heads out of the rear ends with a competent game plan.

  148. m milligan Says:

Mayfield enters the weekend ranked ninth among qualified signal-callers with a 95.9 passer rating, tied for fourth with 28 touchdown passes and eighth with 3,907 yards through the air on the season.

I’ve seen too many terrible 3-13, 4-12 type seasons to complain about winning the division. It’s a good day.

The losing-season Seahawks once went into New Orleans in the wildcard round and shocked the whole league. Let’s see what happens next week. LFG!

  151. Rod Munch Says:

Baker entered the day with a 55.4 QBR, 16th in the NFL, in a year with very bad QB and a ton of starters getting injured.

    That QBR went down today.

For reference, Jameis Winston had a better QBR in 4 of his 5 years here.

Very much so, it’s pretty impressive season to do what they did this year.

It’s just hard to be in a good mood when the QB has looked this bad two weeks in a row, with everything on the line. Everyone knows a huge slapdown is coming next week unless Baker can turn things around.

If you want to be on #TEAMPOSITIVE you can say his two Fitzmagic like games this year, vs the Packers and Jags, came out of nowhere after he had been playing like trash for weeks – so it’s possible, out of the blue, he comes out next week and is on fire.

I honestly hope he does that, because there’s no fans, no people, no city that is worse than Philadelphia, and I want them to throw a fit and riot and loot and burn their s-hole city to the ground after losing in the 1st round of the playoffs.

But to do that, Baker has to show-up and play well, no excuses.

  153. Bucfan1988 Says:

Rod Munch, totally back you 100% regarding Iggles fans…

If we can shock them, their fans would riot and burn the city to the ground….
That city needs a deep cleanse, but mostly of the leadership that runs the city more than the neighborhoods themselves…

Jameis also only reached 9 wins once in 5 years. QBR is a meaningless stat.

  155. BucNasty Says:

How does anyone hate a qb so much who comes in his first year and wins a division? Trask is nothing too special, we’ve seen countless top ten pick QBs absolutely fail. Why so much certainty that Trask who did not come with that level of expectation would do better, what more could we ask for than a division title with Baker at the helm? We went from having the greatest football player of all time as our qb, and after he retired we improved our record. I’m just confused with the mindset of some of these fans. Need to either completely block you guys out or just let the team make a change regardless of outcome because I can’t stand the moaning anymore.

The NFC South wasn’t the joke of the league in those years. He was facing Brees, Ryan and Newton – and as stated many times, do the math and you’ll see the Bucs played the hardest schedule between 2015-2019, and had the worst defense in football over the span of 2015-2019, and also had the worst kicking game from 2015-2019.

Those are all facts. Literally the only thing good the Bucs had during those Winston years as on the offense, where they broke all the team records for passing and scoring (and no, Winston didn’t break the team record for INTs, sorry to burst your bubble).

QBR doesn’t let you artificially inflate your stats by making 1 yard passes to your RB on 3rd and 12 where they run for 8 yards and help your completion percentage and yards per pass numbers. QBR doesn’t care if you throw a hail mary INT on the last play of a half. QBR doesn’t give you credit for garbage time stats the same way the old QB rating system worked.

All of that is to say Baker was, at best, a mediocre QB in a bad year for QBs.

With that said, none of it matters if Baker goes out next week and in the biggest game of his career, has a big day and gets the W. If he does that, then he’ll be back. If he goes out and lays yet another egg, none amount of excuse making and whining about him being hurt is going to make any team give him a big deal.

It’s all up to him now, and I’m hoping he does well, I want the Eagles to embarrass the POS Eagle fans, who I hate even more than the Baker Bois.

Great point – in the Super Bowl, only two teams that have played in at least two Super Bowls are undefeated.

    The Bucs and the Ravens.

Let this be the year to settle the deal!

Bucs vs Ravens for the Super Bowl win percentage record!

  159. firethecannons Says:

we must have a new coach and a quarterback in the draft, baker can bridge. so disappointed in this team–we are in line for a blowout loss. It will be a “guess we came out flat” we might be in the playoffs but we are very bad!

  160. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Some Bucs fans really suck. A team expected.to finish last in the NFC South won the division.

Mayfield had a bad game and he’s hurting. True. I doubt he’s hurting as bad as Trevor Lawrence, Russell Wilson, Justin Herbert, Geno Smith and others who will be home WATCHING the playoffs next week!

Get a grip and enjoy the ride. We get the Eagles Monday night and they just got whupped by the Giants today. Anything is possible.

  161. IE Buc Says:

The only reason we are going to the playoffs is because the NFC South is a trash division and the Saints who got hot at the end, fell on the third tiebreaker. They have been better than the Bucs the last two weeks. All the coaches for the NFC South teams should get fired.

We are going to get beat in the playoffs by the Eagles and their trash defense. That is how bad Canales and his offense is. We won’t beat a stumbling Eagles team. If we had played any other NFC team in the playoffs, it would be a 30 point beat down.
