Baker Mayfield Practiced And “Looked Pretty Good”

January 4th, 2024

It’s a much safer bet now that the Kyle Trask starting quarterback debut will be shelved for another year or two or three.

Baker Mayfield shook off his bruised ribs and practiced for part of today’s session at One Buc Palace after sitting out yesterday.

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales advised media of the good news but it certainly sounded like Mayfield was limited overall for the day.

“He had a third-down period. You know, took all the reps in a nice third-down period and he threw some accurate balls. He looked pretty good…  As far as throwing, he looked functional today. He ripped a couple of balls down the field and looked ok.”

Sorry, Kyle.

  1. BucU Says:

Hey Dave, Hope your practicing that run up the gut for 1.8 yards a pop.
That’s our bread n butter as you know.

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Every player and coach better understand that a loss means that the house gets cleaned.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Ibuprofen is a wonder drug.

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Do we expect the Panthers pass rush to target the ribs? Is that even possible? Do they try for a late hit and take the medicine that comes with it?

  5. Jack Clark Says:

Of course he looked good in practice, it’s practice. We’ll see how good he looks in the real game

  6. DBS Says:

Kyle still better get practice also just in case. Hopefully Bowles is smart enough to realize one hit Baker could be done.

  7. Pewter power Says:

Even when we’re down to much to run the ball guess what it’s a run right up the middle on first and second down.

So nos that we know the game plan I think baker will finish the game well rested. Canales is probably paying they can’t stop that run up the gut so he can run it all day and play action off of it😑

  8. Not Says:

Looks like Trask’s first start will be with the St. Louis Battlehawks somewhere down the road !

  9. David Says:

The Trash Baker looked pretty good last week in practice also prior to the Saints game. That was the healthy Baker. Wait, did we win ? Wait ? how did he do, I missed that game ?

  10. Erik The Viking Says:

The NFL is a QB driven league. Bryce Young is a guy the NFL would love to create a narrative around for next season.

I look for the refs to keep it close enough for the Panthers to hang an L on our necks.

If we want to win by 1 point, we better be up by 14 late in the 4th quarter.

Otherwise the refs ear pieces will be in heavy use.

    #NFLisRigged

  11. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Erik, I agree. The refs know the plan ahead of time. They know who the stars and who aren’t and who the NFL prefers. Must have really driven the suits crazy when Brady took a left turn and signed with us.

  12. Since76 Says:

Wonder if a Mayfield nursing an injury can have over 50 yards in the first half. That way maybe the game isn’t out of reach already at halftime. Saints were running out the clock in middle of the 3rd Qtr. Playing prevent.

  13. David Says:

I love it. It seems as Toilet Bowl/Baker will be out of here to trash bin with the first roughing the passer penalty call targeting his injured ribs.

following by calling Trask’s number in the middle of the second qtr. with no prior start, no reps the entire week leading to the game.

Toilet Bowl/Baker gambling as Cleveland did before Baker laid turds and left the town.

  14. Bill in Seminole Says:

The Panthers are last in the NFL in the number of sacks at 24. The Bucs are 10th at 45 sacks. The Panthers are 25th in the league with 8 defensive interceptions. The Bucs are 16th, with 16 defensive interceptions. The Panthers also have the highest percentage of missed tackles at 11.7%. The Bucs are 27th at 6.8% (a surprise, I would have thought we would be higher).

All in all, the Panthers are a weak defensive team, allowing 25 points per game and ranking 30th.

@Jack Burton Mercer – the Panthers rank last in the league in defensive hurries with only 16 for the season. Bucs have 38.

  15. D Cone Says:

If Bucs lose Mayfield is out a million. Of course he’s going to play. Even hurt.

At 1 mil I imagine it won’t hurt as much as the 3 mil he gave up just to get a job at Carolina last year. But it will sting for sure.

Trask will be fine another year with the Bucs unless a team wants to pick up a QB with both size and ability.

  16. DBS Says:

David. When Baker was not taking the snaps who do you think was?

  17. David Says:

This tells us how desperate the Toilet Bowl/Trash Baker in prevent any positive exposure on Trask and avoid revealing their mock up training camp or any qb controversy prior to the playoffs.
Bucs should be able to defeat the worst team in NFL with any qb’s. but they rather play an injured qb.

  18. dmatt Says:

    I agree ModHairKen,
If Baker hangs around in the pocket they are going to put him in happy feet n or desperation mode seeking a turnover pronto. Brian Burns is going to have an eye for an eye state of mind after being ejected last meeting. Last game of the season for the worst team in the nfl n it’s a Panthers “I don’t care” type attitude. Panthers mindset will be… let’s take out their QB, let’s spoil their season. To counter, bring in additional tackles as blockers (not poor blocking tight ends) then roll Baker out n just let Evans n Godwin have a field day.

Question…why do we continue to draft tight ends who cannot block?
    Tim Wright
    Austin Seferian-Jenkins
    Cam Brate
    OJHoward
    Cade Otton
    Payne Durham

Ko Kief is a good blocker, if he could only catch like Gronk.

  19. Proudbucsfan Says:

So Baker will play and he will be seriously hindered, I have a feeling we are going to lose this game because Mayfield won’t be able to get the ball down field. The plan of the saints the whole time, the Honey Badger gets his bounty money for stopping Baker and ruining our division title hopes.

  20. Citrus County Says:

Baker didn’t take many snaps in practice. So does that mean Trask took a lot of snaps ?

  21. HC Grover Says:

    I do not care

  22. HC Grover Says:

His ribs will throw hin off in a game situation because certain moves will be limited. Practice is not game congitions. But oh well, Even a wounded Baker is better than healthy Young.

  23. David Says:

It’s all a fake hype Hollywood show by the Trash Baker to show how resilient and team player he is playing with injured ribs.
There is no way you can get bruised on the most sensative parts of your body and heal just in two to three days. You wouldn’t be able to walk let alone play football or even throw in practice.

That is why I call him trash on the field and off the field. He is a punk.

    Joe says;
    “sorry Kyle”
No Joe. We are happy to see him play if he really was inured. Why ? Bucs lose, it will be end of TB/BM.

  24. David Says:

    Baker fans:
Baker practicing today is either a desperate move by trash Baker to prevent Trask from playing or it was Baker faking the severity of his injury fooling the fans.

The x-rays were negative and this injury was a clear exaggeration by the trash baker which will backfire on him as it did back in Cleveland when he played the opposite card downplaying the severity of his injury.

  25. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Umm… That’s not what we saw on Twitter. Baker didn’t look great.

  26. David Says:

    Joe says;
“He had a third-down period. You know, took all the reps in a nice third-down period and he threw some accurate balls. He looked pretty good… As far as throwing, he looked functional today. He ripped a couple of balls down the field and looked ok.”

That tells us that Baker injury was fake and exaggeration with Baker having his usual attention deficit disorder syndrome moments.

  27. SlyPirate Says:

    WATCH THE QB HITS …
Baker’s ribs will feel fine until he gets hit.
The more he gets hit, the more he’ll hurt.
The more he’s hurt, the more he’ll rush his throws.
The more he rushes his throws, the more mistakes he’ll make.

I’d have Baker on a short leash and Trask gameday ready.

  28. WyomingJoe Says:

@David: I must admit, you’re getting better at shoveling sh*t about Baker, which by the way makes you a very sick individual. Can’t believe that you are so uninformed about what happens at an NFL practice when the #1 QB takes a limited amount of snaps. What a pathetic joke you are.

I wonder how you’re going to feel when Baker guides the Bucs to a victory Sunday and is given a multi-year contract. I hope it makes you sick, lol.

  29. Jack Sparrow Says:

Oline better protect Baker or the Bucs are doomed.

  30. Beeej Says:

Are you saying that any debilitating injury that doesn’t show up on an x-ray is fake?

  31. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    One word, Toradol.

Give a shot to Baker prior to the game.

He’ll be good to go after that and that’ll help our playoff chances.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Dave Canales … ‘As far as throwing, he looked functional today.’

What higher accolade could an OC possibly give his QB?

  33. Woodenman Says:

I will say I just heard Baker is making 4 mil in base salary. He also gets 1.2 mil if bucs make playoffs plus has another 2.2 mil according where he ranks in certain statistics in the league which he is on the edge of so he has alot of money on the line this game not to mention a possible nice new contract on the line. So he will be highly motivated to play and win this game l just he he doesn’t force it.

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

    Lol.
Baker took about 60% of the snaps at practice.
    Woolford took about30%
    Trask took about 10%
Bucs are wanting to win this game!

  35. Tb bolts Says:

We’ll see if mr moxie can clutch up while injured… he sure couldn’t do it when he was healthy. Oh well. Another win for the bakery club! At the cost of seeing if you have an actual quarterback waiting on the sidelines. Mediocre mayfield will only go so far and everyone including his traveling wagon fan club on here knows it.

  36. Citrus County Says:

I’m a Baker fan AND a Kyle fan. I don’t want to see Baker suffer any further injury. I also don’t see anything to suggest that Kyle can’t come in and win this game for us. Maybe by giving Baker a few snaps in practice and proclaiming he looks good is just coaching deception and a good passing game plan has been drawn up for Kyle. A win for Kyle would increase his value and prospects. Further injury to Baker and a possible poor showing due to his injury only serves him poorly. By sitting out this game he protects his future. Not playing will do him no harm. Perhaps Baker does see Kyle as a threat. If that is the case then good for Kyle and good for the team as a whole. My question is will the team rally and play hard for Kyle ? If they do Kyle’s value goes up, if they don’t Kyle’s leadership qualities will be questioned.

  37. Citrus County Says:

    Capt.Tim Says: Lol.
Baker took about 60% of the snaps at practice.
    Woolford took about30%
    Trask took about 10%

And how sir do you know that ? Were you at practice counting the snaps ? Canales said Baker took all the snaps in one 3rd down session. That would be one session of an entire practice not 60% of the entire practice.

  38. Bucsmarley Says:

Baker will start but he will never finish the game no matter how tough he is. Panthers d is aiming at those ribs for sure. What do you do if by chance Trask plays and lights it up. Who do you start then in a meaningless playoff game. 1 and done

  39. Bucsmarley Says:

Capt Tim doesn’t know. It was a closed practice lol. Another person guessing

sounds more to me like he is close to a nervous breakdown

  41. Citrus County Says:

    Capt.Tim Says:

How could Baker have taken 60% of the snaps if he was limited overall for the day?

  42. Bucsmarley Says:

    Wyoming Joe
Wanting baker for multiple years as a starter is just plain average. Is that what you want lol. A .500 qb who flashes. I would rather blow it up and build for future than pretend because we have such a lousy division. You would probably be will to pay baker 25-30 mil a year😂😂😂😂. Seriously open your eyes. Are you from Cleveland or are you bakers godfather

  43. Citrus County Says:

Self incrimination is so much fun to observe Capt. Tim.

  44. Citrus County Says:

Sorry editor, I omitted the hyphen in self-incrimination.

  45. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

I can only hope that Baker plays. Maybe his grit will inspire the rest of the team and they can come out on fire for a change. Build a nice lead then let Trask come in and get some experience. Go Bucs!!

  46. unbelievable Says:

Well all the videos of practice on Twitter are showing quite the opposite- that Mayfield had almost no zip on his throws and is clearly in a lot of pain.

But of course Todd Bowles would lie about that.

    Here’s my prediction:

Bowles / Canales will go extra light in practices this week to help Baker, and not give Trask any reps with the 1s… when they should do the complete opposite and throw Trask into the fire as much as possible to have him ready, just in case.

Come Sunday, they will give Baker the start and believe they can rely on the run game to shoulder the brunt of the offense. When the run game predictably goes nowhere and we are losing to the worst team in the league, they’ll start having Baker throw, only to see that he’s not healthy enough. Then Trask will come in cold in the 2nd half and the Bucs will lose and watch the Saints win the division.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope I’m wrong, but it feels inevitable.

  47. Oxycondomns Says:

    Smokescreen

  48. Kidfloflo Says:

Calling the guy Trash who exceeded every prognosticators prediction of winning like 4 games, while playing with a new O.C and teammates and banged up with the heart of a lion, and one win away from winning the division again to host a home play off game sums up some of u mooks in a nutshell

  49. Obvious Says:

    Unbelievable,
As stupid as that sounds (aka a REALLY BAD PLAN) I have a sinking feeling your right. These two running it are just THAT ridiculous and arrogant! I heard 1 senerio that made some sense this week concerning the continued fruitlessness of running
Repeatedly to nowhere up the middle, that made a slight bit of sense in that Canales was covering up for Mayfield because something was wrong with him.
Ok, that’s fine BUT where was the creativity from Canales? WHERE was the plays that were versatile and effective from Canales? I’ll tell you… NO WHERE! What a Lousy OC if that’s ALL HE GOT!

Citrus County, you beat me to it, Tim is shoveling “fake news”

And guys, that write up on how Mayfield preformed today WAS NOT ENCOURAGING! The Word “OK” actually translates to NOT GOOD! I know why so.e would read it differently but if you consider it was Bowles giving the statement, IT’S TELLING! It’s telling us he IS NOT ALL THERE AND DOES NOT QUALIFY TO QB! At least, that’s how it is today.
Look, I want my team TO WIN! I Don’t give a tinkers D MN who is throwing the ball with the exception THAT IT BETTER BE THE MOST CAPABLE SLINGER WE HAVE!

If it’s not Mayfield, it’s not Mayfield
If it’s not Trask then it isn’t Trask
THE MOST QUALIFIED SHOULD BE BEHIND THAT CENTER ON GAMEDAY PERIOD!

But then, I take a look back at the coaches and my head falls into my hands shakes back and forth with a sad realization….

  50. Mark hardt Says:

Have the Haterz already forgotten about the perfect game at Lambeau and stomp on the Jags? Baker looked great against the saints once Canales stopped handing the ball off. Had White and Palmer not fumbled we would have won. In the Future Dave once we get down 2 scores start the no huddle offense.

  51. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Mark

Those two fumbles are not the sole reason why we lost the game.

Baker’s two interceptions aren’t why we solely lost the game.

The Saints offense dominated the time of possession.

When that happens your offensive possessions have to count.

When you turn the ball over 4 times out of your 10 drives to a team that is dominating the time of possession and give them 4 more drives to continue to dominate the clock, you lose.

The Saints dominated the line of scrimmage and won the turnover battle. That’s why the Bucs lost.

Everyone on the Bucs from coaches to players was awful against the Saints.

That’s why we lost. No excuses.

  54. FortMyersDave Says:

I love how all the conjecture about Trask possibly starting has shifted the Vegas line from Bucs -6 to -4.5 Of course, given that Bowels is the head coach it is really risky to favor Tampa in any road game, even 2-14 Carolina. I want the Bucs to win as a fan but the ATL lost in Carolina and like the Bucs they have their good days and bad. If the Bucs that played the Saints show up, the Bucs lose like the ATL did to the kittens but if they play like they did in Green Bay, they win. Likely it will be another 21-18 nailbiter so I have to say that the Bucs giving 4.5 is a bit high, just saying. BTW, money also going on the ATL, line in NO shrunk to -3 from -4 and the Philly/Giants line is interesting as well. Whoever wins the NFC South probably will get a Philly team that could have lost 5 of their last 6, food for thought as well.

Yall ride mayfield so hard that yall continue to trash the back up who neither one of you have seen in a full regular season game, what a clown thing to do.
Btw he did throw 6 tds in college and 416 yards in the same game. You don’t spend a 2rd pick on a qb to never play him a full game, it’s that simple. Don’t give me that “they see him everyday for 3 years now” because “they” would be Bowles who still plays bums every week (JTS,Neal) and Leftwich who quite frankly never belonged in the nfl period. Their evaluation on players is questionable at best. Im not saying Trask will light it up but he could or he could stink. We simply don’t know cuz the current people in charge are incompetent

  67. Zoocomics Says:

    @BucU

I agree, that’s probably what will happen if we lose… not that I want to blow this up, because I don’t think the grass is greener, and we’ve seen this franchise do a reset and frankly those attempts didn’t make anything better, just 1 single season where we are more optimistic with change. By year 2 we’re already questioning whether we need another reboot. All that being said, most “good” teams should be able to beat a team that has 2-wins and a slew of injuries to their offensive line.

We lose out on this division and/or playoffs, and we keep everything intact, rest assure there will be a reckoning from the ticket buyers, especially after this organization forced fans to buy 2 years worth of season tickets to capitalize on the Brady effect, this season was the last of the 2 year deal and now what do we have to look forward to next season if we drop to 8-9? Contextually, there’s a lot that’s going to happen to look forward to but not from the general fan’s perspective, especially if we are left with that feeling that we had a very winnable situation and we blew it. Compound that with a coach that isn’t well liked nor the fans have any confidence in. This last game is huge in many ways.

  68. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    -Zoo & BucU

My hope is to get rid of Bowles some how/some way because I just don’t think he’s a good head coach.

I think Baker is polarizing, which is a good thing for ticket sales. I think the problem with the Bucs ticket sales is fans like me are numerous and we think Bowles is the problem.

Drafting a quarterback is a 50/50 proposition at best, and to get a top quarterback prospect if you don’t have a top pick in this draft would cost a lot in draft picks and players as Carolina demonstrated, which hurts building a franchise.

Winston and Mariotta were two Heisman winning quarterbacks who were can’t miss and they are obviously both huge busts.

I was skeptical about Baker, but his back to back performances against the Packers and Jags changed my mind.

Everybody from the coaches, to offensive players and defensive players didn’t come to play last week. It was a complete team loss.

I don’t trust Trask. He’s unknown. I’ve seen to many unknown quarterbacks on our team and they have set back our franchise.

Baker is having success on a team with salary cap issues and tons of rookies playing on it. It’s tough to win games with inexperienced players and a team that can’t spend money.

Based on his performance this year it could be argued that he’s just as much of a Pro Bowler as Matthew Stafford.

I think Baker is a quarterback who if he has a great defense and a good line (good lines are the secret to a good passing and running game) that he can lead us to a Super Bowl like a Johnson did with us or Dilfer and Flacco did with the Ravens.

    Just my two cents.

  69. Beeej Says:

He’s the #8 qb in the NFL, he SHOULD look pretty good
