Baker Mayfield: Ford Field Noise Shouldn’t Be An Issue

January 19th, 2024

Prepare for noise.

One thing the Bucs must face Sunday that they will have no control over is crowd noise.

Folks who watched the Rams-Lions playoff game Sunday understand how nutso Lions fans were at Ford Field. Hey, they don’t get too many home playoff games, so folks have been waiting eons to let loose.

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield did some homework about this newfound home field advantage and reached out to his former Rams teammates for feedback. Apparently, Ford Field is the new Arrowhead or Superdome of the NFL.

“For me, Minnesota is always a great environment, but playing in Kansas City in the playoffs was great, as well,” Mayfield said about road games with loud crowds. “Just talking to some of those Rams guys, they said it was the loudest thing they’ve ever heard.”

Of course, Mayfield said he and his teammates must be ready. How can you prepare for that kind of noise? Mayfield basically said everyone has to know line calls and exactly what their assignments.

In short, Mayfield said, do your homework.

“We’ve got to be completely ready for that,” Mayfield said. “It just comes down to everybody knowing exactly what our gameplan is – all the calls to and from, because there could be certain times where they can’t hear certain things.

“They might have to plug and play some of the words. [It’s] just everybody doing the mental work to get prepped for that, but it shouldn’t be a surprise for us. It’s going to be a great atmosphere.”

Mayfield was right. It’s not like this is the first place the Bucs will visit where noise is a factor. Anyone who went to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis knows once that damn Vikings horn gets working, you can barely hear yourself think.

And of course, Lincoln’s Tomb in New Orleans is crazy loud and rowdy. Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis was in a frenzy when the Bucs lost there. And Mercedes Benz in Atlanta isn’t exactly a wake, either.

Hand signals and silent count defeat crowd noise. The only issue is Dave Canales sorry as calling run plays between the tackles on first and second down

We need mayfield to be a $40 million dollar quarterback this week 😱

Baker is so positive. Love the vibe. They all do need to be ready. The Bucs can do this now. We have seen the strength in many games. Go Bucs!

  4. Hodad Says:

Baker owes us for the opportunity he was given. He should pay us to play here next year!

    Hodad, yeah right 🙂

1-2 years at $20-$25 mil per year, that’s what Barker has proven he is worth since the defense has carried the team all along.

    Whos Barker

What a nice reception from Tampa’s REAL sports fans.

I was at the week 1 Minnesota game, and I’ve never heard a crowd like that and so consistent. RayJay, on its best day doesn’t come close to what I heard in Minnesota, and somehow this Bucs team managed to not have one false start penality!? To me that was the most startling statistic coming out of that week 1 game and certainly contributed to them stealing that game from the Vikings.

Hopefully they can duplicate it, because we all know Detroit’s 12th man is going to bring it.

If Baker is smart he doesn’t ask for anything more than what you mentioned, nor do we pay him anymore. I’m thinking a 3-year deal. We have some mouths to feed on this team, to include acquiring some key free agents that will help us move this team forward. If Baker wants to even sniff a Super Bowl, let’s hope he’s on board. Like I’ve been saying, Baker isn’t elevating the talent around him, it’s talent around him elevating him. I want Evans back, but I can’t see paying him what they’re claiming he wants. I think the only teams that can afford that price tag are crap teams in cold weather. Let’s hope he gets a solid deal here and he stays put.

No starting QB is gonna sign a contract for $20 mil

America is a bunch of pussies who why their feelings hurt over loud noise and the wrong noise. C’mon NFL go back to throwing a flag when they home crowd is being too loud! Waaa not fair for the visiting team waaaaaa

  14. DBS Says:

I always like to sit back and laugh watching the experts saying what to do. Or what the team can or cannot do. When in fact they have no idea what the team themselves or players want to do Or will do.

The Mercedes Benz dome can be half filled and still loud as hell

    NIce reaction form the crowd

Puts into perspective that these blog comments do not come close to representing the real Tampa bay bucs fans

except for the actual supporters here

The March FA market will determine his value so it is out of our hands. His agent will bring Baker the best deals he can find. Baker may take less for the coaching staff he likes best. Coaches are on the move including Carroll and Belechick. Keep in mind Canales got his start with Pete at USC and may want to be his OC for one more year. HC is a big jump.

  19. ModHairKen Says:

    The Lions have ears, too.

    Noise does not discriminate.

Zoocomics I have been in St. Pete for 15 years and my kids and in laws are Bucs fans. However i grew up in Akron and left when I was 18. I still followed the Browns though because I was in non NFL markets such as Bremen Germany and Long Beach CA. Rams and Raiders were gone when I lived there. Baker inherited a 1-31 team and had rezpectable seasons 1&2 despite have 3 HCs in those years. Year 3 was his best up til now and had 2 very good playoff games. This year was his 3rd. My points. 1. Baker elevates teams. Even this year he had a glorified slot receiver for a RB that Canales insisted was Chubb and ran him up the middle. Evans and Godwin were doubled up but made plenty of pop warner like mistakes such as Evans dropping a ball in his palms last Monday and Godwin not turning around against Buffalo for what should have been a walk off TD.

  21. Marky Mark Says:

    2. Baker gets better and calmer under the pressure of big games. He did that in college. All 3 playoff games he was outstanding. Monday 50 m QB Jalen looked like a deer in the headlights under the blitz. Meanwhile, Baker knew exactly what was coming and called the TD shot to Godwin.3. Baker coaches up players on and off the field. He stays positive with receivers dropping easy balls and goes right back to them. 4. Like it or not the QB is the most important player on the field because he puts the ball in play roughly half the game. Fumbles, sacks, and interceptions can easily lose a game. Baker is very good minimizing those

  22. Marky Mark Says:

    5. You have it exactly backasswards. Baker elevates teams with serious flaws and covers for team mates melting down under the pressure of big games. Having said that the market will determine his value and like that big Serbian Nuggets center he has been severely underestimated and that may well continue this March to the Bucs favor.

No starting QB is gonna sign a contract for $20 mil

    Yet here we are.

  24. stpetebucfan Says:

Baker is a winner if we are honest. He has scoreboard in College..at Cleveland and now here in Tampa! No he’s not Tom Brady or a physical freak like Josh Allen but IMHO his ceiling is Drew Brees.

I mean no disrespect to Brees. Drew has SCOREBOARD a SB!!! I said it was a CEILING for Baker…I think if things fall right Mayfield can get the Bucs to the SB.
Like Drew…hell like EVERY QB…Baker needs a superior team around him to achieve superior results. He’s not the problem!

And AGAIN…no I’m not comparing Mayfield’s current spot in history to Drew Brees…I simply think with the right breaks he has the talent to get there.

  25. Randal Parmer Says:

Why would Tamps fans act like the BUCS are ran anywhere near as incompetent as the Cleveland Browns? Do you realize Baker took a 1 and 31 football team and broke the rookie td record? Baker was NEVER the problem in Cleveland. Haven’t ypu listened to Garrett blame the COACHING STAFF for the loss last Saturday? Let Baker go to another team it doesn’t matter 8f he is not being forced to play at 60 percent like he was in Cleveland and you get him some help he will ALWAYS WIN! PERIOD!

  26. Craig Says:

If the Bucs can manage one of those rare first possession TDs, and the D forces a three and out; noise will not be a problem.

Cheap seats for this game are $1186.00. That means that everyone there is going to be a true believer that it is Detroit’s year.

Throw a wrench into that and the silence will be deafening.

  27. ScottyMack Says:

Baker will sign a three year deal for $75-90 million with $50-75 million guaranteed. That’s a bargain for a top ten QB.

  28. ScottyMack Says:

Not sure when being taller than 6 feet made you a midget. Far shorter QBs have been successful in the NFL.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Lions fans will pack the stadium cos they smell SB, and have never won one. Being a Bucs fan, I know the feeling. BM has won my admiration and respect. He is a true team player. He’s not stupid. He’s feisty and fearless. Bucs will need their A++ game, and watch out for the dirty hits and refs. Too many NOLA Payton aholes on Lions’ squad. C’mon, Tampa Bay!!

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Drew Brees, Fran Tarkenton (sp?), and Sonny Jurgensen weren’t exactly giraffes.

  31. Jeff Says:

Worried Bowles will be out-coached on defense. The crowd will be a huge factor.

  32. Student of the Game Says:

2 wins from the Super Bowl, only 8 teams in the entire NFL still playing and there are still naysayers. I hope Baker reads this blog. Just makes him better.

Anybody that thinks they can sign Mayfield for 20 million is delusional. There are 4-8 teams that I guarantee you will make inquiries to his agent.

  33. JustVisiting Says:

I really like Baker, but he doesn’t “deserve” anything, and he’s “worth” whatever the highest-bidding team will pay for him. Personally, I think it’s in the Bucs’ best interest to pay his market value, but he isn’t owed anything…it’s just business.
