“Underplaying The Baker Mayfield Story”

December 30th, 2023

Bucs QB earns respect.

The face of a national hollering show is coming clean.

Long-time Baker Mayfield nemesis Colin Cowherd, in a roundabout way, is giving the man he sees as the devil his due. Folks across the country are “underplaying the Baker Mayfield Story,” Cowherd said.

And what is that story? Mayfield is having a “great” 2023 season.

(Go ahead and compare Mayfield’s numbers to Lamar Jackson, Matt Stafford and Josh Allen. You may be surprised.)

Cowherd noted all teams in the playoff hunt have either a “great” quarterback or an offensive coach. Some, like Kansas City and Los Angeles, have both.

The lone exception is Seattle, Cowherd explained.

So where does that leave the Bucs? Cowherd said on his FS1 show it is time for folks to give Mayfield his earned respect.

“If Baker Mayfield wins [the NFC South] division, he is going to get an AFC team to the playoffs and an NFC team, winning a division, to the playoffs,” Cowherd said. “Russell Wilson couldn’t do that. This story is underplayed.

“He’s doing this with a defensive guy who got run out of New York and has lost half his games. [Mayfield] is doing this with a defensive coach. In 2023.

“Baker deserves more credit than what he is getting. It’s a great story.”

Yes, it is a great story and Joe is thinking how quickly things have turned around for so many people with the Bucs.

Not even four weeks ago Joe was moaning how the Bucs were averaging 19 points a game. Bucs coach Todd Bowles was high up nearly every hot seat chart. Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales admitted he had “honest conversations” with his family about possibly getting fired.

Now, the Bucs are a win over the slimy Saints tomorrow from winning the division and hosting a playoff game.

Joe sure hopes the Bucs close the calendar year out with significant fireworks. Enough to make Cam Jordan cry.

    Season ain’t over yet.

    One.

    A.

    Time.

    Then let’s talk.

  2. Bosch Says:

Keep it up Bake. Just shut out the noise and focus on your game.

  3. Beeej Says:

Moving Godwin back to slot made it sooooo much easier to find open targets

  4. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Cobra

    I agree 100%.

I just saw an article from CBS that listed Tampa as the top landing spot for Rus Wilson due to the past connection to Dave Canalas…

If Baker can help us get 10 wins and the NFC South title it will be hard not to give him a fair deal net season.

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

Here’s to hoping the Bucs resign Mayfield – a known commodity and spend valuable draft capital elsewhere.

  6. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Surprise from a known Baker hater..Cowturd is a despicable man

  7. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

The Bucs are improving. Partying on the bandwagon is a lot more fun than sitting on the crapper throwing sheet.
Play hard Bucs, anything can happen!

  8. David Says:

I obviously will not bash anyone who doubted Mayfield, because if you didn’t, that was more of an issue. The fact that he has proven it wrong, is fantastic.
I’d hardly say it it’s been a fast turnaround, it’s been a slow grueling season and we don’t really know if the offense has turned the corner yet.
It seems he and the OC and O line are all getting better… They still need to open up better holes in the run game though.
Two more games to go, I’m almost on board with resigning him but I’d like to see him clinch and do very well in a playoff game Under Pressure

  9. David Says:

The other big difference with the Buccaneers right now is the defense. They’re using Devon White properly and blitzing while playing more man-to-man. Don’t know why, but these guys are clueless in zone.
It’s going to burn them sometimes, because they are being very aggressive, but it creates turnovers and gets sacks.
Can’t wait to see what Yaya does the last two games

  10. 1#bucsfan Says:

Agreed cobra. Love all the positive talk but the season isn’t over. I hope they are focused on beating the AINTS. To many times in past we got all high and mighty just to get the snot knocked out of us. Sunday will be a good game. It’s a division game and they are usually close. Seeing how the AINTS are 1 game behind us and how much we hate each other they will bring it.

    LOL, Toilet Bowl !!!

I think todd must have joined that AA type group SH.A. : sh-t he@ds anonymous and he surrendered himself to g0d, and gave up his resentment of the pass !!!!
He has made amends to the football g-ds, but lets see how much further he gets.

    On to the playoffs.

  12. R.O. Says:

Fingers crossed! I hate losing to any team in the NFC South. It would be nice to pull out a win tomorrow.

  13. Mike C Says:

Not….why the weird spelling of god?

  14. Weebs10 Says:

David finally broke. He’s jumping on the bandwagon. Bout time you woke up dude but man I can’t help but laugh

  15. Jake Says:

Paula Abdola I think said it, opposites attract. It’s been said that Baker and Todd
like one another as well. I feel like the key is Cannalas and the system that has
taken a little time, but through the ups and downs they have grown, now if they
can hold on to this thing that’s happening going ??? !!!. I love this shoot out thing. GO BUCS!!!

  16. HC Grover Says:

    Well done Bakefield.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

Maybe David got a few IVs and a methadone treatment. But just because the lunatic read that Cowturd had public praise for Baker doesn’t mean he’s any more rational now than yesterday.

Lay off the booze and meth David. Maybe then you can find your way out of mom’s basement.

  18. orlbucfan Says:

Hey joes: have a few Bromosas for me. 🙂 Now, what does it taste like? I like brews like Foster’s.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Fosters is goat urine compared to Bromosa. Even the Aussies don’t drink it.

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

I hate how he acts like he knew Baker was good all along. What a pundit. GO BUCS!

  21. SB~LV Says:

Well they are more like on the corner than have turned around.
    Progress is good!
I’d still like to see Thompkins catch the ball on the run, he is by far the most dangerous YAC offensive player on the roster.
    Maybe soon!

  22. unbelievable Says:

@Marine – absolute NO to Russ. The guy is an albatross to his team and a diva. Most of his teammates hate him. Total cancer.

  23. PewterStiffArm Says:

What sucks about win streaks in football is the possibility of a loss, of course. The closer you get to the end of the season the less you can tolerate losses because of momentum. Plus, the one and done stares you in the face every single game. Winning is great, the last time we had a late important win streak Brady was under center a we hoisted the Lombardi. That isn’t normal, I guess we can toast to the unusual.

  24. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    -orlbuc

Bromosa’s are a hoppy beer, but not too hoppy, and it has an orange flavor to it.

Once you try Big Storm you will not go back to Fosters.

Highly recommended going to Big Storm for a game, have a couple of flights of beers and one of their flatbreads and wings if you get the chance.

  25. Bubby Says:

Let’s Bake! Go Bucs!! Losing to the saints tomorrow is not an option.

  26. Proudbucsfan Says:

I definitely did not think Mayfield was going to improve and I didn’t think he could throw in tight windows and hit our receivers with one step separation. But he is doing it beautifully and has shown he can play elite. I’m proud to say that I now have faith that he is going to continue to play great and the Bucs should keep him. I’ve always liked his leadership skills and his fighting competitiveness. Show me consistency, do it for the next ten years. That’s what the Bucs need.

  27. Gipper Says:

    Proudbusfan,

Happy to have you on board. Why don’t you convert David?

  28. Baking with Canales Says:

    One more game.
    LFG!!!

  29. orlbucfan Says:

    BellGladeBuc,

I’m too old to go solo to Big Storm but appreciate your answer. Bromosa reminds me of a champaign mix with OJ. Done plenty of pregame bashes at Tampa Stadium and RJS. I’ll just hang at the home, and watch our Bucs cream the Aints. Might even do a Fosters or 2. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  30. Jmarkbuc Says:

Nothing quite like a Saints game..

    Most always close.. always crazy.

And this one for all the South marbles.. Hope we’re in win mode, always so much more fun to beat the Saints than almost any other team.

    Except maybe the Eagles.

  31. Joe Says:

@Marine – absolute NO to Russ. The guy is an albatross to his team and a diva. Most of his teammates hate him.

    This is true.

  32. Mark hardt Says:

Colin cowherd is a joke. The best commentators are former players.

  33. Not Says:

    @ Mike C
Weird spelling, I guess out of respect for those who think g-d should not be spelled out. I am deferring to those , cuz it doesnt really bother me.

  34. Proudbucsfan Says:

Gipper, David is just to far gone.

  35. BakerBucs Says:

I think David has been playing mind games all season he just wanted to b the (odd) ball.& was very good at it,deep down he roots for the baker bucs guaranteed!

  36. BakerBucs Says:

as far as the weird god spelling sometimes u hit a letter on u r phone & the next letter ends up being capitol letter by accident it sure looks like it to me I’m sure there was no weirdo sh**t involved

  37. garro Says:

Beckless and Cowturd back to back Joe?
    Ouch!

    Go Bucs!

  38. August 1976 Buc Says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY, RUSS STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Ralph Cramden Says:

    @marine buc

Russell Wilson isn’t going anywhere. He’s in the 2nd year of a 5 year, $242,588,236 contract, and $161,000,000 guaranteed. He’s still owed $76,000,000 guaranteed through 2025.

The Broncos have an “out” after 2025 but will be left with $31,200,000 dead cap.
    (stats from Spotrac.com)

Do you know which team would pick up Wilson’s contract to let the Broncos off the hook? Wilson was benched because he won’t restructure… I can’t blame him for not wanting to leave $76 million on the table.

I’m a little surprised that Sean Payton can’t “fix” Wilson inside his offense. Something else is going on.

Whoever wrote that story at CBS is an idiot- the Bucs don’t have the cap space to take Wilson’s contract – and he’s not going to restructure.
